I've lived around the corner from CJ Chan for a few years and never bothered to check them out. It looked like a seedy little joint in a strip mall no one frequents. Decided to read the reviews today and most all were glowing so I decided to give it a try and am very glad I did. This place is a step above all the other Chinese joints around. I had the chicken w/ garlic sauce with chicken fried rice, an egg roll and hot & sour soup. Clearly they use higher quality ingredients than just about every other place in town. Though a couple of the pieces of chicken were a little hard and weird. I'll be back though as it looks like they're making some killer sushi there too. If only they delivered! read more

We first tried CJ Chan on a recommendation by some friends. The restaurant is awesome. For being in a little strip mall, you'd never guess that it's so nice inside. Well designed, clean, and such a great atmosphere. Open enough that you can see them cook your food, but you never hear kitchen noise, and it's never distracting. The prices are excellent, and they always accommodate our 2 year old. The food is basically really good take-out Chinese. Nothing mind-blowing, but we've never had anything that we didn't like. read more

CJ Chan...more like CJ AWESOME. Like everyone says, it is in an unexpected location, but I have to mention that the little strip mall it is in is clean, updated, and in a decent neighborhood. No one has expounded on the surroundings and a couple reviews made it sound like the food was amazing if you were willing to get stabbed, shot, or accosted by a bum. Definitely not the case. The location is just as nice as Cross Point or T&C (but about 50x smaller). The interior of the restaurant is quaint, inviting and comfortable. My friend was in love with the soft Asian music playing gently in the background. On to the food...scrum-diddly-umptious! (as stupid Flanders would put it) My friend and I ordered an entree and sushi/sashimi, both to share. It seemed reasonable for two people to eat and finish one meal, but the portions are so gargantuan that I actually got to take home leftovers! (which I am now currently enjoying as I write this) On the sushi side, we ordered a cali roll. It was on par, maybe even a bit better, with sushi you can find in the Oregon District. It was fresh, cold, and the care and quality put into making it was obvious. We also ordered some sashimi: yellowtail, tuna, and shrimp. Sashimi is hard to screw up, either it's fresh and prepared well, or it isn't and not edible. This was the former. Very very good. Sharks don't even eat this well. My ONE AND ONLY tiny little disappointment (which is still a strong word for my sentiment) of the evening is that the sashimi wasn't served over the rice nuggets. But that is a matter of style for the chef and in no way, shape, or form detracted from my enjoyment. The plate was visually stunning with the arrangement and the colors. Almost didn't want to disturb it! I did upload a pic, though (it's the pic of sushi with the chop sticks diggin in). Our entree was chicken w/ Chinese vegetables. Seems simple, but it was effing amazing. The chicken was cooked just right, the veggies were crisp, and the sauce was light and flavorful. Even after I nuked the leftovers it is still delicious. It was served with pork fried rice, which is the best I have had. Typically I go for white rice when ordering, but this entree came with the fried rice so we just went with it. And damn glad we did. The down side to that is now I'm going to be stuffing my face with fried rice every time I go there (calling my doc for a statin prescription). About the service. Because of the amazing experience with the food, the waiter could have flashed us and stole my wallet and I would still have to give four stars. Thankfully this wasn't the case and I experienced exceptional service unlike I have received anywhere in Dayton. As a matter of fact, even if the food was inedible I still might go just for the service. Our server was extremely polite and professional (reminded me of the diner owner from 'Two Broke Girls'). This is what puts CJ Chan in the five star category. And I have a short story as an illustration: Shortly after I ordered, the server came back, apologetically, to tell me that they only had one piece of yellowtail left. I said no prob, I'll take the last yellowtail and a piece of tuna would be cool as a replacement. The sashimi comes as a six piece mix-and-match, so I should have received two shrimp, three tuna, and one yellowtail. When the sushi/sashimi arrived I discovered that I had three shrimp, two yellowtail (they must have found an extra piece somewhere), and four tuna. For you mathematically challenged yokels out there, that is nine pieces! At no extra charge. So to make up for "disappointing" me, they gave me the number of yellowtail I ordered PLUS the extra pieces. The best part: the server never mentioned it. It was like a silent good deed. This impressed me to the point that not only will I return, I will reward CJ Chan exclusively with my business for my Chinese/Japanese cuisine. This one experience gained them a loyal customer for all of eternity (or until Jesus returns with his zombie hoard to destroy mankind). Go here. Eat here. Support this establishment. We recently moved from Belmont (Dayton) to Miamisburg. We missed a lot of the Dayton dining we were used to, especially CJ Chan. We were so excited to find out that a second location was opening next to Chappys in West Carrolton/Moraine. We went opening day (today) and our tummies are so happy. The restaurant is beautiful and they lost nothing in taste or quality. Some of my favorites to try: mai fun, pork short ribs, tempura, green salad with carrot/ginger dressing, or any bento box. The food here is fresh, the veggies are crunchy. We've never had a bad experience and will be visiting the new location often. read more

I found this little gem on yelp and tried them out today with a colleague for lunch. The restaurant is in a strip mall but that shouldn't deter you. The place is cozy and decently decorated with perhaps 10 or so 4 tops in the place. The menu offers Chinese and Japanese selections. I'm pretty sure the staff is Chinese since I was catching a little Mandarin here and there and there were several Chinese International Students there for lunch, but I decided to order off the Japanese side. I ordered the Sashimi Bento. It came with 3 slices of tuna, 3 slices of escolar and 2 slices of salmon. The fish was sliced thickly and looked fantastic with absolutely no smell whatsoever. My bento also came with 4 pieces of California Roll, 1 piece of shrimp tempura with assorted tempura vegetables, miso soup and salad. Chinese and Japanese food in the same restaurant is a crime against all that anyone has ever held sacred--at least it is where I come from. Nevertheless, I've made peace with my current surroundings and this place comes with so many good reviews and is so close to where I live--I had to try it out. I kind of hoped this place would break the streak of bad Asian restaurants that my wife and I had tried in this city. Well, you can guess from my rating that we didn't like it. We tried ordering really standard stuff--Egg Foo Yung, Yakisoba, Tuna roll. Nothing was outright terrible, but it was all mediocre in flavour and execution. This is a place I hold very deeply in my heart. I frequent CJ Chan's maybe once every 3 weeks or so--it was more often before, but anyway, moving on: I'm a Maui girl who goes to UD for college. I'm also as Asian as you can get, so I am typically pretty critical about my oriental food. Let me tell you: do not be deceived by the hole-in-the-wall dingy outside of this place. CJ Chan's is a magical place that just makes everyone happy. I've had their chow mein, lo mein, seafood udon, katsu chicken, Eel bento, and a bunch of other stuff. I come here with my boyfriend almost every time he comes up to Dayton, and it's never a bad time. The food is always delicious--with the exception of the "okay" calamari "weekly" special (It's the special....every week. That special board never changes haha). The waiters/waitresses are very kind folks who are very patient and the waiting time for the meals aren't bad. The ambience is very relaxing. I always leave full and happy! Eat here. Yet another restaraunt that I would have never stopped in due to it's location in a small strip mall, thanks to fellow Yelpers I've found a new local gem! As I've already pointed out (and so have others), this place is located in a tiny strip mall, small sign, and seems like every other Chinese eatery in town, but what it offers is huge in contrast to it's size! The dining area is very small but tastefully decorated and very clean, everything seems to either be very new or well taken care of. The service was super fast and friendly, we never had to wait for very long for any part of our meal. I like the menu because it offers both Chinese and Japanese fare, I ordered the hunan triple delight, and it was indeed a delight! Huge portion, steaming hot, and fresh. The sauce was very spicy and thick (I love spicy!), it was awesome in my opinion! Aside from the menu options, service, and cleanliness, the prices are very reasonable as well. My wife and I each had a beer (Soporo), crab rangoons, and two entrees and the total was $27, not bad! Don't let the location or exterior fool you, check them out! read more

I went to CJ Chan's for the first time last week. Two of my co-workers invited me. The inside looks very clean. It's a decent size. The workers were very friendly, and the service was quick. I get an hour lunch, and we were able to eat and make it back to work with a few minutes to spare. I ordered the broccoli with garlic sauce and I was very pleased with the dish. I have ordered this dish at other restaurants, and I must say that CJ Chan's was the best. I definitely plan to return to try some other dishes. read more

Worst sushi ever.....fish obviously not fresh. Troubling smell and iridescent color. One bite and done. Have heard good things about the Chinese food, so am sticking around to try that. Wish me luck. We went there on our roadtrip to Bonnaroo this year. The place was quite far from the highway but it was worth it! Portions are enormous (I'm a big eater and I couldn't finish my excellent General Tso's) and prices are great. One of my friends also took the General Tso's and the other felt more Japanese and tried the Sashimis. Both had great words to say about their lunch, too. I don't know if I'll ever have the chance to be in Dayton again. If I do, I'm definitely going back to this charming little restaurant. read more

While the restaurant location isn't ideal (sandwiched between Papa John's and a smoke shop...although some may find that convenient)...anyways...it's worth a visit because their food is really good. Our family typically orders a meal for pickup and we've yet to be disappointed. For the money, you get a nice portion of food at a reasonable price. It's not too difficult to find a coupon if you're into that type of thing so happy hunting. The unique menu offers Chinese & Japanese cuisine...hence the "CJ" name. Well...I haven't been here since before covid because we live a little distance; The last two visits, I would have given them a 4.5 because we've had Chinese food in many local places plus in Honolulu and at an awesome place in San Antonio where the food is served family-style and so very fresh. Here in the Miami Valley when I visited cj's twice, I just knew it was a cut above other MV Chinese places but today for lunch, big disappointment!! I know nuked food when I taste/feel it...our food was almost cold in some spots and blistering hot in others. My chicken with veggies...underwhelming amount of chicken tasted like left-over and I've had tastier sauce, plus the cold/hot spots. White rice ok & veggies seemed fresh but still nuked w/hot/cold spots. I tasted my hub's General Tso's which was good hot/cold but his fried rice was tasteless & looked like the only thing in it was scrambled eggs; it did have a nice yellow color (no flavor help there) and I do know that fried rice doesn't have a lot of flavor ; however, it was just bland. I like to be fair when reviewing and hate to do a bad review because of restaurant struggles but if they want to survive, they need to wake up! read more

Hands down the best Chinese food in the greater Dayton area. Their Sushi is also very good and well priced. My favorites are spicy tuna and spicy salmon, but their special rolls are great too. The thing that tells a lot about the quality of a restaurant is the state of their bathrooms, and the bathrooms here are nicer than most expensive restaurants I have eaten at...they are always clean and the fixtures are modern and beautiful. I'm not sure if I would say the sushi is the best in Dayton; it's a toss up between here, Kabuki in Centerville, and Sima in Kettering. It's in the running though. We've eaten here several times and haven't had a bad experience yet! I have to add though that I don't think I have ever had sushi made by a trained Japanese sushi chef, so I may have low expectations compared to people that have eaten at sushi restaurants in large cities. When I lived in Kettering this was a quick shot down Shroyer for take out Chinese food. I've never tried any of the Japanese food. This quickly became my go-to place for Americanized Chinese take out. Prices are ridiculously low, service is very fast, portions are huge. I've never eaten in the building. We did takeout here about 4 days after they opened (just saw I didn't write a review)... Ordering was easy - which you might think is silly, but how many times have you had trouble ordering via phone from a Chinese/Japanese/insert-your-flavor-here place? She said to pick it up in 10-12 minutes. Wow. Quick. I motored on up the hill, they're to the right of the Subway (but not past the tanning place) as you go up Irving, and sure enough 14 minutes later the food was ready. Takeout included napkins, plasticware and everything all packaged and ready to go. I have a Japanese mixed box with chicken and a Cali roll. Everything was great. The girlfriend had a Chinese veggie dish and some miso soup, which wasn't thrilling. It was out of a box. Ick. The crab rangoon wasnt anything to write home about, either. Sometimes, this would drop the review to 2-3 stars, but it was day-4 of opening, and everything else was in place - so they keep their 4! WOW!!!! This place is AWESOME!!!! I feel like a fool because I have driven by this gem for years and never stopped by! "CJ Chan", I thought, "doesn't sound very Chinese-y to me" and "it sure doesn't look like much from the outside". But boy was I wrong!!! ATMOSPHERE---- I've only enjoyed carry out from this place but every time I walk in I wonder why. It is surprisingly classy in there and if you've driven by I already know what you're thinking "but it's outside makes me think you're wrong Jesse". Take my word for it, this place is nice. SERVICE----- not a complaint. People are always friendly and I've never had an issue. FOOD---- I believe that you can judge a Chinese restaurant based on its general tso's and CJ's is some of the best I've had. It's nice and crispy, not soggy like many a place, with a great flavor and a tad bit of spice that leaves you wanting more with every bite you take. Love this place. Small Asian (chinese-japanese) restaurant near UD. The food is always delicious and the service is prompt. Occassionally, there is a wait as there isn't a lot of seating. But its worth it I've never had anything off the Japanese side of the menu, but the dishes I have had (General Tso, Szechuan beef and Broccoli, and others are always very good). My wife especially likes the amount of vegetables served - other places will give a couple of sprigs of broccoli, for example. Parking can be limited. I had just finished watching Finding General Tso on Netflix. Which was extremely entertaining and I highly recommend it. The only problem was...afterwards I was hungry. But not any old food court General Tso would do. I started a quest to find a quality Chinese dinner place in Dayton that I had not had yet. Hunan House (in Miamisburg) and China Cottage came to mind but the former can be a bit greasy and sloppy, and China Cottage is rather pricey and comes with the whole kit and kaboodle of a sit down restaurant. Yelp led me to CJ CHan. I've been back at least 10 times now after finding General Tso at CJ Chan. The price is great. The service is great. Check in on yelp and get a free California sushi roll! Most importantly the FOOD IS AMAZING! The general tso sauce is not seemingly made with High Fructose Corn Syrup and Red number 500. But it is flavorful and has depth. They offer Singapore Noodle (aka Mai Fun) which is the best I've had in town I must say. Interesting aspect of CJ Chan you see lots of Chinese people eating there! So you know it is good! Another note: they have Japanese menu as well that you can choose sushi, bento boxes and katsu amongst other things. read more

I'd like to start by saying that I've solely had sushi there, and while it seems that the Chinese food there is what makes up most of their business, their sushi is definitely worth a shot. We prefer to skip over the super americanized Chinese dishes. Firstly, this place will NOT jump out at you. It's in a shoddy-looking little plaza next door to a Papa John's. We drove right past it the first time we went looking for it. This place itself is pretty small, and unfortunately, every time I've gone we've been sat near the door, which makes for an uncomfortable meal when it's chilly outside. If you're looking for a romantic sushi dinner or a special evening out, this place isn't for you. It's busy, fairly cramped, and there's nothing extra fancy about any of it. If you're looking for a quick fix of cheap (and not disgusting) sushi, this place is seriously great. Out of all the nearby sushi places, this place is by far the most affordable, and I have never had any major issues. Sometimes, the fish on the nigiri does have a strong fishy taste, but other than that, you really can't beat it for the price. While I stick mostly to nigiri, I always get my go-to spicy tuna and eel roll, and the rice to fish ratio is always heavily favored to the fish. 100% worth the trip as long as you don't expect a top-notch dining experience. read more

I love this place for it's excellent sushi, Japanese apps (including age tofu, or lightly fried tofu in a sauce), and great entrees. I like the General Tso's tofu: it's lightly breaded and fried tofu with steamed broccoli. I recommend the tea. I'm vegan and had no problems. The prices are so awesome too. read more

We recently moved close to CJ Chan, had heard good things, and decided to give it a try. We called in a carry out order and it was ready within 15 minutes. I got the chicken in garlic sauce, which was delicious and actually a bit spicy. We also ordered some of the best crab rangoon I've ever had. So good. It was reasonably priced and the portions were huge. I got three meals out of one order. My husband picked up the food and said the interior was nice so we'll be going back to eat in soon. read more

CJ Chans is the best Chinese food my husband and I have ever had! I think what makes it stick out to others is you can tell they use the freshest ingredients! Most places their vegetables tend to be soggy and at CJ Chans they're nice and crispy! All of their meat tastes amazing too, it's all cooked perfectly! The price is comparable to just about every other Chinese restaurant I've been to, but at CJ Chan the quality is much higher! Great egg rolls and rice! I recommend good ole General Tso's and the Chicken Katsu. A new Chinese place that is close to the University of Dayton. excellent. as other reviewers have said the food here tastes extremely fresh you can just taste the difference. The portion sizes are adequate, I guess I'm a 22 year old male so that makes things a bit different, I wouldn't go as far to say gigantic though. The prices are reasonable for the amount of food you get and the lunch specials that pretty much every Chinese place has are a good value. The building on the inside is nice, and the service is really the only downfall here, they seem to still be working out the kinks and thats okay by me because the food is so good. They also have a wide selection of Japanese inspired dishes but I have not tired any of those. They don't deliver yet to my knowledge but should be soon which is excellent. Eat here enjoy the food and lets keep this place in business it is certainly a step above the other places in the area. The Orange chicken and General Taos are favorites. You really can taste that the oil in the fryer is fresh and not many days old, which is refreshing. read more
