The burgers here are absolutely great. I also enjoy that they come with some very delicious homemade chips. I got the fish tacos and was pleasantly surprised that it was raw ahi tuna, not the usual fried fish. They've got a large beer selection, which is probably a good thing for a gastropub. Drink prices are reasonable as well. The atmosphere is enjoyable. There's a few different sections - downstairs bar, outside, downstairs dining, upstairs bar, upstairs dining, upstairs lounge. They did everything right, from socially distancing and offering us additional seating outdoors, to sanitizing everything. The staff went above and beyond and the food was delicious. Nice find in Niskayuna. Our server ( Tara ) was sweet and attentive. We had the chic pea appetizer and bone in ckn wings, both delicious. My husband and I split the turkey club sandwich, large enough for 2 people to share with the apps we ordered. This was our 1st visit. They do not have a kids menu- but they have high chairs.... and oddly enough, chicken tenders, Mac n cheese and fries under appetizers. So, it appears a kids menu could easily be created. The hostess was first going to sit us at a 4 person table. There were 4 adults and 2 children under 2. Before I made the suggestion for another table, a coworker suggested it to the hostess. Good came rather quick and the burgers were good. Fries were super hot! Had to ask for refills on water- which I find annoying. My nephew made quite the mess under his high chair. So my brother in law started to clean it up. City Squire used to be a friendly neighborhood restaurant. The original restaurant was torn down and a new building constructed with new management. we have been customers for over 20 years and wanted to support the local establishment. However after the rude encounter my wife and I experienced by a young female bartender and another female staff member, the City Squire has lost our business. We had a dinner reservation for 4, and had some time before a table was ready so we went to the bar to order drinks. The bartender told us we couldn't order a drink unless we had a table. I said we have a table that isn't ready yet, and all we wanted to do was order a few drinks from the bar and then we could move to another spot while waiting for our table. The bartender, now with another young female server by her side, told us that they don't allow people to be wandering around the bar area. Again, refused to serve us any drinks while waiting for our table. (Have never heard anyone in a bar/restaurant tell a patron they could not move about the establishment - ludicrous notion). Not spoken to pleasantly; no offer to give them a minute to finish whatever they might be doing and then take a drink order; nope, rude and clear, that we could not get a bar drink unless we were already seated at a table. Net restaurant loss for the bad service encounter was at least eight drinks for the party of four; four entrees, and at least a couple of desserts, which we typically would order after a meal, and at least a 20% tip when we dine out. We decided on the spot, that we're taking our money elsewhere, and this Niskayuna establishment has lost our recurring business. I expect the management would not be happy with their employees for such poor representation of the business, because the loss of our visits is a substantial monetary loss annually. But more than that, we will advise others not to support the business now. Unfortunate for the new owners but they have a couple of twits working the bar who really shouldn't be there. Based on their comments, I would assume they have said similar things to other patrons as well. We've been here several times. Every now and again service and food are both good. Tonight, however, the food was bland and the service was lacking. I dont think there was any garlic in the garlic aioli. It was edible, just not inspired by any means. There was only 1 bartender and we waited way too long for a beer. Room was empty, cold, fireplace not turned on despite howling snowstorm outside. Cheerful b'tender was quick to fix this when asked & got us drinks.App of mozz triangles usual but very greasy.The coating tasted very fishy.Ordered my burger well-done but not burnt with *no pink* inside.Entrees arrived at all different times-only 3 people got their food at a time.A few orders were incorrect, with errors like not giving extra veggies asked for, putting tomato on burgers. Never was able to get mustard & had to ask for extra napkins for the wings. Biggest issue was burger was underdone-was *rare*-not even close to well done/not pink in the middle. I choked down 1/2 the burger, left the rest. Home made chips= fail..cut too thick, they used the wrong type of potato (looked canned?), were super oily & had zero seasoning on them. Hella disappointing meal today. Quality of ingredients has really taken a nose dive. When we came here over the summer a few times we were big fans as they used canola oil (not soybean/vegetable oil) in the fryer. This meant i was able to eat all the fried things! Yay! They also made salad dressings with the same so i was able to eat those too! Today however after bringing my parents here for their first time, everything has changed and I basically can't eat anything. Vegetable oil (aka soybean oil) blend used for everything. Super sad. They don't even have plain olive oil to offer for the salad. C'mon guys olive oil for the salad?! For the prices they're charging, I'd expect quality ingredients. They had a big fan in my local family and i looked forward to next summer when i would not be preggo and could drink on the patio but probs won't be back now that they've cut the corners. Toddler still loves their $9 mac and cheese app (no kids menu, but they do have high chairs. Weird). Also finally settled on the cauliflower app which i loved over the summer but unfortunately it's now a fall "au gratin" version meaning the cauliflower is slathered in cheese sauce (that has american cheese blech). read more

This place is very close to my house and I have been there probably six or seven times now with my husband. I can't recommend it. The first night, we sat at the bar and ordered the fried seafood platter. It took forever and the people next to us got their food first. The place had just opened and I get that new places need to workout their kinks. The bartenders were great and gave my husband a free drink as an apology. Their service was great. Fast forward to today. I went last night with my husband and tonight with a girlfriend. The service at the bar was terrible both nights. Same bartenders last night and tonight. Not friendly, took a long time to ask what we wanted and I had to practically beg for another drink. They never asked how my food was. Both nights I ordered food and both nights I had to ask for silverware and napkins. I ordered fish tacos tonight. The menu has no description and they came with raw tuna which is unusual in fish tacos. I'm a huge sushi fan but did not enjoy raw tuna in my tacos. I did have a burger last night and did enjoy that. The most annoying thing to me is that is EXTREMELY loud in there. And I sat outside at the bar last night and tonight and it was still loud! All you hear is loud chatter and never any music. The lack of music is glaring. I have gone there so many times because I can walk and this neighborhood has been dying for a bar/pub. But frankly, it's not with it. I am on the fence about this place.... 3 star review or 4 star review????? We had a gift card for this restaurant. If we didn't have the card we probably would not of know this place was there. Very easy to get to off of upper union st. As of May 3rd the parking lot is almost finished being paved. There are no lines yet on the black top. This being said.... people don't know how to park without the lines. So parking is a challenge at 630 at night. The place is very nice. The outside patio and outside bar seating looked very inviting. We chose to sit inside. Next time (because we have money left on the gift card) we will probably sit outside at the bar. Inside was very clean very updated and loud. Inside was not full so we could still hear each other. I can't imagine how loud it would be if it was full of people. Service was slow. Took a long time for the waitress to come to our table. The bus boy was more attentive than our waitress. There was no drink list. I love to be inspired by a drink list. Just a list of beer. I settled for a gin and tonic. The tall gin and tonic was $10!!!! Way to much I think. The menu was small. A lot of pub style choices. Sandwiches, salads, burgers. My husband got a bowl of chilli to start. It was a little bitter for my taste buds. He got the Asian chicken salad and I got the fish tacos. For our dinners. The salad was a good size and fresh. Very light on the dressing. The fish tacos were made with tuna. I have never had a tuna fish taco. It had lots of flavor and was also very fresh. It was on the appetizer portion of the menu but large enough for a meal. I would get them again. The service and the noise level would prompt 3 stars, the food is very good. Sooooo 3 1/2 stars from me. Bad place. Parking was horrible. Waited 10 minutes before being acknowledged. Was told it would be a couple of minutes later. 20 minutes later we were told that we 2 people left we could sit there after they had cleared another table. Five minutes later she asked if we wanted something to drink.....we ordered. Got our drinks but no straws. No silverware. No personality. No charm. Frenetic wasted energy. This is a live review so no food yet....silverware is nice..a small victory. Onion soup is good. Just finished the small glass of diet coke. Curious if anyone will notice?? People seemed annoyed all around us. The staff seems frazzled. Could not imagine this place on a Saturday night...no refill yet 4 minutes and counting. Did I mention the soup was good. Brought our food...no refill. Still no personality. Burger was cooked well. The bun was tasteless and a weird texture. Still no refill!!! I was at the old City Squire which I am glad is now gone. The new space is fresh and clean. I have been a few times and really like the place. The vibe is modern brew house meets industrial. A very popular vibe right now. They have a decent selection of beers and the bartender was very knowledgeable and guided me and my group toward delicious choices. I ended up having a burger which was very well prepared. The service was on point and would recommend this place to a friend. Yes, it may seem loud in there but, its a bar and a restaurant people talk.... its fine. If you are in the neighborhood stop on in. It is a very inviting space and I for one and super glad they joined the neighborhood. read more

They weren't that busy... we got seated, and after twenty minutes, we still didn't have anyone come over to our table, so I got up and got our drinks myself at the bar. The new City Squire is a failed Wannabe addition to the downtown Ale houses, brew pubs etc. We went in on a hot afternoon around 4 and there was no air conditioning on so it was sweltering. The beverages come out in small soda glasses. We placed our orders for burgers (no pickles, no mushrooms????) when we thought we would glance at the dinner menu. The waitress brought us the dinner menu @ 4:13 and we decided before she had placed her order that we would like to order dinner. Only to be told dinner starts at 5p so could not order until then. It was surreal. We went forward with our burger orders. The burger was compact and done as asked but that was the nicest thing I can say about the new Squire. Its sterile, contrived and not a restaurant that gets handed down thru the generations anymore. RIP City Squire, new isn't always better. read more

The complete rebuild of the property looks amazing and will transform when the weather gets nice as there is outdoor seating both downstairs and upper level. Adding insult to injury, the seats are extraordinarily close to other parties so you are on top of each other. The wood seating is not comfortable and must add to the noise. More troubling, we ordered fish tacos that came - without any notice on the menu or otherwise - raw!!!!!!!! We were stunned and sent back. Additionally, no kids menu and the food was subpar. Four of us had lunch here today, after playing golf. The food, service, and price were excellent. Two of us had the Baja Chicken sandwich, which was tasty and was a good serving size. The third person had a great BLT, and the fourth had a nice taco dish. The atmosphere was great and welcoming, and our server was helpful and paid us just the right amount of attention. This is our 4th or 5th visit to the new City Squire. This trip was much better than the last, so the four stars are based on this trip. I had one of the daily specials, the Texas Burger. 1/2 lb. burger with chili, bacon, onion strings, BBQ sauce, almost too much. I ordered it medium-rare and it arrived spot on medium. Last trip I had a chili burger, ordered medium, delivered medium-well (no pink at all) and dry. Even the chili was dry and tasteless. This time the burger was juicy, but the taste of the chili got lost under the bacon and BBQ sauce. The frys on the other hand, were as good as coated frys get (personally I prefer non-coated frys). My daughter ordered the chicken parm sandwich and was very happy with it. She is a fan of coated frys and really liked them. Last visit was also a Friday night, about the same degree of busy, so I can only assume the chef that night was off his/her game, hence the 4 stars. read more

I have been there several times with different groups of people, and loved it every time. One friend complains about the noise (people talking and background music), which is mostly from the beautiful wooden ceiling and walls, which echo sound well, so I guess they could try noise-suppression techniques, but I didn't mind it. If I wanted a quiet evening, I would stay home. I like the menu, and have enjoyed everything I had, every time. I found the staff to be friendly and attentive. Will never visit again. I ordered my food at 7:27 and it arrived at 8:55. The manager did nothing but comp my glass of wine - the wine wasn't the problem. When confronted the manager, who is also the cook, said they were busy in the the back, however we were seated without waiting and the place was nearly empty when we left. We had lunch today and the food was great. We shared a mozzarella wedge appetizer. Very good size portion of 3 wedges and perfect for two people for lunch. My partner had the Chicken Parmesan sandwich, it was a knife and fork sandwich, huge portion. Good flavor and would recommend that sandwich. I ordered the Roast Beef sandwich and it was huge. The aus jus was extremely flavorful and really complimented the roast beef. My partners "beef" was with the fries and that they are more steak frites and not your garden variety fries. Since I had the roast beef sandwich they were complimentary to my meal. Our waitress was extremely friendly and kept our glasses full. Here are my observations after two visits... the Good and the Bad: The Korean Wings with the Mild sauce are amazingly GOOD. Even at a hefty $12 for 10 wings, I'd order these again (and did). It should be noted that I usually go for spicier wings, but I found the Med. spiced version of the Korean Wings lacking the uniqueness of the Mild. In fact, the Med. version tasted as if it had nothing more exotic than Frank's Red Hot as it's base. Also disappointing was the drastic lack of consistency with regard to the blue cheese served with the wings. On my 1st visit, the blue cheese was thick, flavorful and full of chunks. Also, the color was complex and spiced. On my 2nd visit, the blue cheese was thin, plain, chunkless and totally lacking in character. The Black n' Blue Burger was INTENSE and easily as GOOD as any I've had anywhere. That said, the Black n' Blue Burger at 20 North is just as good and it's at least $5 cheaper. Sorry CITY SQUIRE, but $14 for a burger is a bit nuts. Plus, it was served with only about a dozen fries. Not sure if that's the usual portion, or if they were trying to ration them. I do know that they ran out of fries the night of my 2nd visit, so perhaps it was rationing. The rotating selection of craft beer is large and priced reasonably. This is not only GOOD, but it's what will bring me back... perhaps after I've eaten a quick bite next door. Sadly, my future visits will likely be few and far between because my wife has no interest in joining me. She's a wine drinker and they charged her $8 for a glass of HOUSE white wine. I hate to bring up 20 North again in comparison, but she tells me she pays $4 there and gets more wine in her glass for that price. Finally, we found the texture of the Chili kinda gross. The flavor was decent enough, but the ground beef was so finely ground that the resulting Chili was mushy. Thankfully, we were able to fix it by taking it home and adding pasta. read more

I went here with my family of four. Even though it was pretty much a dump. We were big fans of the wings and bar food at the prior establishment and the service was always pretty solid, so. Well now flip everything upside down. The wings and bar food is basic and average at best, except for the the jerk chicken which is inedible and should not be on the menu. The building however is spectacular. But do not sit upstairs because for sure you will be forgotten. The service if you can call it that was horrendous. No menus, no plates, no napkins and my wife had to finally go inside to get silverware. We tried hard believe me to have patience. Our 3 "servers" were just inept. We were 5 minutes from leaving and finally our food came. My son could not eat the the jerk chicken and we were told the kitchen was "still trying to figure that dish out." read more

That's the 1 Star, the missing 4 Stars is for the 20 minute wait before they offered us the table that was open the entire time we waited, the server that didn't know we were there for 20 minutes, than took our order (fried food, nothing difficult or time consuming), then didn't bring our appetizer out or dinner and after 45 minutes of waiting without at least an appetizer, we walked out passing the waiter on our way out saying goodbye and he didn't even recognize us! And in case you're wondering, it was busy when we came in and by the time we gave up and walked out half the tables were empty... so they were definitely not too busy to serve us. After that experience, I will not be back and I wouldn't recommend anyone I know go there. Just my $.02 for what it's worth. read more
