City Squire is a great place to meet up with friends especially when you have a group or dietary restrictions. We have only been here in the winter since our first visit in November but this was our second visit and we are really excited to go back. The service is great. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. If there is any questions about a menu item, they will not hesitate to go to the kitchen and speak with the chef. There are a few vegan items on the menu and we love this!!! Last time we ordered the vegan short rib and vegan bulgogi pork. The short rib I had and let him try was so good my husband ordered it for himself this time. I tried the seitan wings in BBQ sauce and of course we had to let our friends experience the fried chickpea appetizer, sooooo gooood!! We love it and we will be back with more friends! read more

We got so lucky to live near City Squire, thankfully it was only until 10pm. SERVICE Excellent service, the last shift server and baristas kept on checking on us during our late dinner. Brought us drinks, food. They overheard us complaining about the salmon entree which was overcooked. Both servers came by, apologized and spoke to their kitchen chef about the overcooked salmon. They offered to recook another piece of salmon for us to fix their mistake. They even took 25% off the salmon entree on the bill which was beyond generous. I kept apologizing to the servers about the late night dinner complaint before they close, they were very generous, told me not to apologize n it was good to bring it to their attention to rectify their mistake. WHAT WE ORDERED Salmon entree See above. The bokchoy was a bit overcooked as well, the tail end of the vegetable was crunchy and smoky which it entices Americans tastebuds. Only doing this review because I noticed most reviews and pics were done years ago. A lot of menu items are different now. Environment was nice. Food came out fast. I was hoping the chicken sandwich looked like the ones posted but it was kind of a burnt Panko crust on a cutlet instead. Not the same chicken sandwich from the past. I still enjoyed it. The fries are shoestring now but they were good and you got a huge portion. Side salad was also a good size and super fresh. My only complaint is the portion of sour cream, salsa, and guacamole with the nachos wasn't nearly enough for the amount of nachos you get. I'm sure they would have given us more had we asked. read more

For my 300th review, I decided to go to City Squire Ale House after hearing many great things about it. To start, for an appetizer I ordered the loaded waffle fries. The fries came loaded with queso, bacon, scallions, and red onions. They were absolutely delicious. The fries were hot and crispy and the queso was delightful. Plus, the addition of the bacon made the fries heavenly. I highly recommend this appetizer to anyone. Onto my entree. For my entree, I ordered the build a burger which came with regular fries. I had cheddar cheese, bacon, fried egg, lettuce, and thousand island sauce on my burger. It was very good. The bun was brioche and it was nicely toasted. Furthermore, the flavor of the burger was solid. The bacon and fried egg were both cooked perfectly and helped added flavor. I do wish that the burger was cooked a little less and that they put more thousand island sauce on it. But, overall it was pretty good. In addition, the fries were good. They were crispy and had decent flavor. In the end, City Squire was a very good restaurant and the loaded waffle fries were the highlight. read more

First visit since it was completely rebuilt. Now it is completely modern and attractive but it lacks the feel of the cozy neighborhood place that it once was. However, it now has a nice upstairs and outside seating when weather permits. We came around 4:00 on a Saturday, and were seated promptly on the main level. I thought my husband would find the wood bench seating uncomfortable, but he did not. I sat in a classic chair. The large bar area with tables is across the front of the restaurant, and it was busy. The 6-7 foot wood divider did little to subdue the bar crowd. However, I got used to it. After all, it is a popular bar. We were there for an early dinner. My husband had the Stone Pilsner and liked it very much. We both ordered French Onion Soup because we heard it was good. It was. The flavor of the broth and soft onion pieces were pleasing, but overwhelmed by cheese topping. The cheeses were Mozz and Swiss, and too much was used for MY taste; It glopped up into a ball when I was 1/2 done. However, Husband ate it with no complaints. I ordered the Broiled Cod (with roasted asparagus and red potatoes.) The nice waitress helped me select. She said it was a popular dish that diners do not expect. I loved It! The large piece of fish was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The asparagus were grilled nicely. See photo. Husband had the French Dip which he decided was excellent -- quality meat and good roll. It is served with an abundance of homemade crispy potato chips. Since there are so few restaurants in Niskayuna, we will be back because of the proximity to our home and the fact we were happy with the food on our first visit. This was a recommendation from a friend, so we gave it a try. Before we went, we checked out the menu that was on line and kind of decided what we would try. Apparently this restaurant changed in 2018 and there is an old menu on-line under the name City Squire Alehouse. It is no longer called the City Squire Alehouse and is now simply "The City Squire". So when we arrived, the menu at the restaurant did not match the choices of the menu we had seen on line. For example, on line listed a couple of steak options when in fact they don't serve steak at all! So we went in with our expectations of steak for dinner but had to change to another choice. This didn't start the evening off right. It is a nice, neat small place that has about 17 beers on tap and some, I understand, are hard to find. We are not drinkers and realized quickly that was why most of the people were there as they mostly had an appetizer and a couple (or more) beers. I opted for the Fish and Chips ($17)and my wife ordered Chicken Milanese over rice ($16). The fish was done to perfection. It was one large fillet of a mild flaky white fish deep fried to perfection in a light batter that had just a hint of beer. The chips (fries) were not my favorite, as they were battered and had some spices on them - reminded me of Arby's curly fries. No Cole slaw that everyone else includes and priced about $3 higher than comparable places around town. My wife said the chicken was also very good, tender, and juicy. It is a medium size boneless breast fried (like a chicken Parm) topped with a few pieces of lettuce greens and a little lemon sauce drizzled over it and served on a bed of rice. No bread or any other sides accompanied it. This is a small pub, and the floor, ceiling and walls are covered with wood and wood paneling. It probably seats about 30 people plus maybe 12 more at the bar and it was full. There was no music, and the 5 large TV's playing around the walls did not have sound. All the noise came from all those people talking loudly so their partner could hear them. It was so noisy that it was definitely distracting. Mediocre service is a generous rating. The server was friendly and polite when she took our orders. Then after the food was delivered we didn't see her again. Finally near the end of the meal when our drinks were empty we flagged her down for a refill. There were adequate staff, they just weren't attentive. Also had to wait about 10 minutes after we finished eating before she came back with the check which was $36.08 and we had water to drink. Value for the dollar was not there in my opinion especially when coupled with the lack of service. The food was good and the portions were ample, but between all the distracting noise and no service we will not be returning. The restaurant business is too competitive to pay a little more to get a little LESS than you do at other places in town. We had water to drink and the bill was $36.08 + tip. read more

I PROMISE TO NOT TYPE THIS ENTIRE REVIEW IN CAPS. I ONLY WANT TO EMPHASIZE WHAT THE NOISE LEVEL IS LIKE IN THE CITY SQUIRE ALE HOUSE, BOTH DOWNSTARIS AND UPSTAIRS. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO CARRY ON A CONVERSATION WITH OTHERS SITTING AT YOUR TABLE. This is a newly built structure replacing the former City Squire at the same location. It's a very attractive building with lots of natural wood on the floors, walls and ceiling. There's even some brick. But the sounds bounce off all these surfaces and seem to never get absorbed. They've only been open for 3 weeks at this point, so maybe given some additional time they will find a way to rectify the situation. They do seem to be making an effort to uphold the second half of their moniker. While a bit heavy on the IPAs with only about eight or ten taps, they are supporting the regional craft brew efforts. My wife ordered a pint of R. S. Taylor Nut Brown Ale ($7) while I asked for a pint of Hudson Valley Pillow Hat IPA, since their only dark beer was Guinness. Our server returned to apologize that the Pillow Hat had just kicked and she suggested the Fiddlehead IPA ($8.50) in its place. It was a very good choice. My wife's Corned Beef Reuben ($13) was served on slices of marble rye bread that lacked a sufficient amount of grilling. The corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and thousand island dressing were otherwise quite average. My Ale House Burger ($14) contained two breaded onion rings instead of the onion straws mentioned on the menu, but I'm not complaining. Those were really good onion rings. The burger was done a perfect medium-rare, as requested, and the patty had a nice crispiness on the outside. The bacon was also crisp and its flavor quite noticeable. A bbq blue cheese dressing sounded weird, but had a really nice flavor, wasn't overly sweet. Add cheddar cheese, non-iceberg lettuce, and tomato on a challah bun and you've got a pretty tasty burger. Both my wife's reuben and my burger came with some very good fries. As busy as it was, service was very good. Now if they could just tone down the loud din, it might get a revisit. read more

City Squire... WOW! DH and I spent many many evenings at the old restaurant now its reborn! New building, new owners, new food, new drinks. Went last night wanting to try it out opening week. I ordered pulled pork sandwich topped with coleslaw served with homemade chips $12 and a glass of Riesling $9... DH had Parmesan Chicken Sandwich... fried chicken breast with red pepper, cheese, lettuce served with french fries $13 and Blue Moon Beer on tap. Compared to other local pub like places I felt prices were a little higher especially the wine. All in all I felt it was a decent meal. Owner said they were working on the menu could be changes and specials. Hopefully it will have some vegetarian choices. Waitress was very nice and we new the bartender and were so very glad to see him. We did think the noise level was high the echoing in the room. It was not very crowded but satisfactory for a Wednesday night so I wonder what it would be like if it was crowded. After finishing our meal we decided to take a tour upstairs. We were surprised to see an even bigger room with full bar, tables, chairs and a gas fireplace. Great atmosphere! I think they have some kinks to work out... but I can't wait to go there when the weather gets better as there is going to be al fresco dining up and downstairs! ~Hakuna Some Vodka~ Third Friday in a row I've come here for some after school snacks (dranks?) - that must be some kind of record, considering there's only been about five Fridays since the school year started. This week, I blame the school nurse - it was her idea. ;-) I arrived around 4pm, and it was a little on the quiet side. While the sun was brightly shining, it was far too cold and windy to open the pass through windows to one of my favorite outside patio/bars in Schenectady -- a first for the season! -- so I found the crew sitting around a hightop table in the bar area instead. There were four in our group, and the sun and natural light was streaming in from almost every direction, making for a bright atmosphere with just the right amount of afternoon haze. It was easy to talk/listen to everyone comfortably without having to strain over a sometimes loud happy hour crowd, so that was cool - I've found it's always a plus to know what you're nodding in agreement with during a group convo. I had just come from a little after school shindig where cake was served, so I wasn't looking at the food menu this time around. Instead, I just ordered my go-to mixed drink when I'm feeling unimaginative, yet still buzz-worthy: a vodka and club soda with extra lemon. If an establishment is woke enough to carry my favorite citrus vodka, ABSOLUT Citron, then that's what I'm having - it's literally the best citrus vodka on the market, hands down, IMHO; however, if it's not on the back bar, then I'll go for Tito's, which is a fair trade in my book. I'll admit I do ask for a borderline obnoxious amount of lemons to squeeze in there, but not because I'm a sourpuss; the juice is worth the squeeze, my friends, because the result is one tall glass of refreshing, lemony, sparkling water. It's simply the zest. So in conclusion, while vodka may not be the answer, it's worth a shot ;) All in all, another enjoyable and well-deserved happy hour at City Squire, a jolly 4-star time (5-stars for ABSOLUT Citron). I only live a couple of blocks away and haven't been there since before covid. Being a vegan for the last 3 years I get frustrated looking for places to go, that has a couple/few options. The Squire came up on my Happy Cow app. I am so happy that I have a new place now! There were several options :) Even my non-vegan partner really liked the vegan wings! Keep the options coming! I didn't realize he is the 3rd owner....but I could tell by the quality of the food. My side salad was one of the best I have had in years. Our waitress told us the owner will periodically update the menu and add new things. Looking forward to the next visit. She was very nice and attentive and from what I could see they waitresses seemed to work as a team and helped each other out and appeared to be a happy bunch. The owner was involved and helping to deliver meals. I could tell he likes what he is doing. The atmosphere is really nice, modern yet warm. I have always loved the design and interior of the place. It tends to be very noisy due to all of the hard serfaces....but its not much different than any other newly designed restaurant. I am not sure anything can be done about it. There are three reasons I love this spot. The beer selection is vast, the building is beautiful and it is right down the street. When I say the building is beautiful I mean, really, really beautiful. They have created an amazing bar area with a patio that wraps around to the street. You can be sitting inside but still be outside while enjoying your beverage of choice. A recent renovation has expanded to the roof which has a balcony and overlooks Union Street. This will be an amazing spot in the summer. What prevents me from going above 3 stars is the food and service. The staff usually seems discombobulated. If you order food at the bar you need a fork right? My party had to go hunting for one. I have tried several things here, burgers, chicken sandwich, poutine tots (gotta love they are using tots!), jerk wings, traditional buffalo wings, buffalo chicken dip. Everything is 3 stars. Nothing is going to blow you away. I plan to continue coming because as I mentioned, this is an awesome spot to hang and have a drink. They have added some additional unique appetizers to the menu and some interesting burgers. Eventually I will find a 4 star item! read more

I'm extremely happy the City Squire is back, since this kind of hangout bar and burger restaurant was sadly missing in the greater Niskayuna / Upper Union area while it was being rebuilt from scratch. (LT's is just shabby and cloistered, Smashburger is fast casual with no ambiance or bar, Ruby Tuesday's is long gone.) It's hard not to compare it to the old City Squire though: the old place had the neighborhood vibe, and the new one is clean, modern, and indisinguishable from 10,000 other slightly upscale bar and burger establishments. Yes, it has outdoor (and upstairs) seating and is pretty busy even on weeknights. That's really nice. The rest of it is like a set from a TV show. Service is perky, though, and while the bar food is a bit on the pricey side (two beers, one app, one entree on our last visit was over $50 - the $14 burger absolutely does not hold up to the standards suggested by the price) it was fine. I'll be back because it's a unique resource for this part of town but the price and general generic feel suggest it's not worth a special trip if you're not from the immediate environs, as we are. read more

It was as if they seasoned the burger with salt and then they encrusted an additional coating of salt around it. It was like I was a deer and this was a salt lick. It was awful. Fish n chips get a 4/5. There were tons of food and the cod was decently fried. Nothing special, nothing bad though. The sriracha lemon pepper wings were meh. The sriracha flavor was prominent, but it overpowered the lemon pepper taste. So you couldn't even taste the lemon pepper. For sriracha wings, they were good; but for sriracha lemon pepper wings, they were not impressive. Overall, the service was decent. We had to flag them down in order to place our order or ask for additional things. Probably won't be coming back. read more

Decided to check out the City Squire tonight. Cool little local place that's been fixed up with a new menu and a new interior design. At first glance it's what you'd expect of a local pub. The pine ceiling and dividers mixed with the brick wall accent is current and cool. There's a variety of seating from tables to high tops, as well as a nice new bar area. Oh and although the weather wasn't permitting, the front porch area could make for a really fun summer hangout. The staff was really friendly and attentive without being annoying or too much. It was a little hard to hear because there's nothing to absorb sound, but that's to be expected in a pub. The only thing that didn't fit was the cool LED ceiling lights, which give the otherwise warm and friendly place, a state office lighting vibe. Being married to an interior architect means I get the scoop on such things -- so please swap out those cool ceiling LEDs for warm ones so I never have to hear, "Cool LEDs in restaurants should be illegal" ever again. With that out of the way, let's talk about the food. It was pretty good. Not amazing, just pretty good. We both had the a French Onion Soup, which would be great if it had a little more cheese. Our main courses were the fried chicken sandwich, which got high marks across the table, but they thought the cole slaw wasn't sweet enough to justify putting it in the sandwich. Make it pineapple chunk cole slaw and we're talking bout something special. I had the Squire Burger, which had really great flavor. My only issue was that the burger was more tall than wide, appearing to be smaller than it actually was, due to it being buried in the bun. Flatten it out while seating and the problem is solved. Both meals came with packaged pub fries, which were fried perfectly, unfortunately neither of care for those. Firestone 151 still holds my heart when it comes to fries and I'd eat them every day of the week if they wouldn't eventually kill me. So would I go back? Yes I would. This place just reopened and so there's some adjusting that needs to be done. Assuming they add more cheese to their French onion soup, get warmer LEDs in the ceiling, and get better French fries, I think we could put the City Squire in our rotation. read more

The space, from what I understand, is a complete new build on what had previously been a tavern sort of place, the original City Squire. From the charming front porch, which blurs the line between indoors and outdoors with its floor to ceiling doors which open wide, to the upstairs deck, the building was simply beautiful. The color palette, the floors, the attention to detail, everything about the place combined to make a really pretty setting for what became an indulgent and prolonged meal. We started at the bar with 3 items from the menu and drinks. Making selections was a challenge because so much sounded good, but we went with the Mexican cauliflower (a recommendation from the owner), a dozen steamers and the fish tacos which were made with fried shrimp on that particular day. Our bartender, Kevin, was great making sure we were comfortable and well taken care of, and went as far as to have other guests at the bar shift over to provide us with seating. Nice. The cauliflower, served in a cast iron casserole dish, was fantastic. Florets of cauliflower, corn kernels, scallions and queso fresco came together perfectly in a flavorful array of textures. Ordered with a salad, it would make a dynamite and satisfying meatless meal. The clams were lovely - fresh and clean lacking only a vessel in which to place the quickly emptied shells. The tacos were a tremendous portion - 3 soft shelled beauties bursting with shrimp and assorted shredded vegetables served in a perfectly designed holder. We probably could have stopped there, but were joined by our third guest and moved to a table to sample a few more items. Will opted for a salad and a beef entree, while Raj selected two more small plate options - the Korean wings (spicy with a Korean chili garlic sauce) and the grilled flatbread a bruschetta-y sort of prep of naan, tomatoes, chicken and mozzarella. I sampled everything at the table and found it all to be well prepared and nicely seasoned. It is a casual place with paper napkins, yet the dishes and glasses were thoughtfully selected and our server was attentive to our needs. As we wrapped things up to take home, we were joined by the chef, who actually oversees all four of the restaurants the family owns. While we didn't order dessert, his enthusiasm and joy in being part of this project, as well as the others, was a super sweet way to end a meal. There is a real sense of family and teamwork that I really appreciated seeing. So many industry folks struggle with cynicism, but without exception, everyone we encountered was positive and upbeat. The food is great and the beer choices are plentiful. It's awesome to have a neighborhood pub on Upper Union that we can walk to. It's exactly what Old Niskayuna needed. I can't wait to enjoy the deck and patio in the warmer weather. They have some small things to work out, like slow service at lunchtime, but I think they'll get things down as they have more time being open. This is a nice modern restaurant with a good size bar. Went here for a casual night out with friends and had a great time. They have interesting cocktails, some with jalapeños, if you can take the heat. Everything was so fresh and delicious. Absolutely recommend the fish and chips! The best I've ever had. The batter was so fresh, crisp, and flavorful. Not soggy at all. My mouth is literally watering while I type this. The wait staff is a little short and the service is long but well worth the wait. The atmosphere and drinks were enough, but then I traversed the three page menu loaded with ample selections. I decided on the Ale House Burger and I'm glad I did. The burger was cooked to perfection and the fries were crisp. This place will definitely be a staple. The service was top notch and there was plenty of parking too. RE-review time kids!! With my parents in town we hit this place up... Uugghh, what a mistake. I'll start with our apps. The Mac and cheese, wings and flat bread bruschetta were all very good. Dinner....well.....not so much! the lovely bride ordered salmon that she described as"sub par" the daughter,boy and myself all ordered burgers and fries. Fries were good, our daughter complained her burger was tough, the boy had the same complaint. Mine? While it was cooked(appearance only) was cold and tasted like it was freezer burnt. I think my parents made out the best, they loved their Ruben. I would have complained to our waiter,but we didn't see him for 15-20 minutes after he served us our meal. The food, service and ambience are outstanding! We shared the fried cheese curds with hot honey they are so much better then mozzarella sticks!!! My party of four really enjoyed them!! I had the chicken pot pie with gravy and it was the best I had ever had! I could have drank that chicken gravy My husband had the Chopp salad and he loved it . Our friends had the tomato and mozzarella sandwich and Bulgogi pork!! They could not have been happier! We will definitely be back!! read more

I stopped by since it's near my dentist's place. The server was very warm and welcoming in serving us. The place is comfy and I saw they have some trivia game nights which sounds interesting. I ordered french onion soup. Presentation was perfect and to drool for, and it tasted wonderful too. I also ordered the chicken tenders for appetizer, and it tasted average. read more

First time here and loved the atmosphere of the place! Pulled onto the street and they have a huge off street parking lot right next to the restaurant. Walk up the stairs to a smaller very quant dining area, small outdoor patio and a large bar with seating inside and out. It was industrial but made you feel at home. Only negative is outdoor patio only fit about 10 people. Food was good, we had the mozzarella triangles, fish and chips and wedge salad. App was good, the fish and chips came in a basket and took over each side of the basket from end to end. Well worth the money. Draft beer was cold and they have a good selection! The servers were a little slower. Only 2 waitress on for the place, they were nice but would have liked a little more "hands on". Will definitely be going back! They only had 6 tv's which were hard to see. Nice place for a date-night because you can actually hear each-other talk. read more

Great place. Small menu but the food is awesome. Love the outside seating in warmer weather. Outstanding selection of beers on tap. The only downfall is that it can get loud inside when the place is full. Waitstaff and hostesses are very attentive. Great neighborhood restaurant and bar. read more

I came here expecting Tavern fare. Their dinner menu was an absolutely pleasant surprise. While not gourmet, incredibly good with. Healthy options. My wife had the so called house salad which was huge and very good with chick peas, Al sorts of veggies, bacin bits, not just a lot of lettuce, and well chopped into bit size. Mac and Cheese was very good. She's kinda of a French Onion Soup snob,,and she was impressed. My chicken cognac dish was stunning. I opted to skip the potatoes and have additional asparagus. The chicken was cooked to perfection, the veggies crunchy. Cocktails are average size in these parts. As a fan of the Olde City Squire , this is so different. I miss the old Toady Irish bar, but this place has kicked it up many notches. read more

The burgers here are absolutely great. I also enjoy that they come with some very delicious homemade chips. I got the fish tacos and was pleasantly surprised that it was raw ahi tuna, not the usual fried fish. They've got a large beer selection, which is probably a good thing for a gastropub. Drink prices are reasonable as well. The atmosphere is enjoyable. There's a few different sections - downstairs bar, outside, downstairs dining, upstairs bar, upstairs dining, upstairs lounge. The downstairs bar can get a little loud, but it's a bar, and it's not out of control. read more
