Really cute spot! I love French cuisine and was always interested in checking this spot out. There are a few French inspired dishes, but it doesn't seem to be their focus. The menu is huge and full of some classic dishes. They have a full bar so we started off with some drinks, I just went with wine today but my sister enjoyed an espresso martini. We were also brought out some fresh bread and butter and I may have over indulged. I knew I wanted to try the lobster bisque - a favorite of mine. It was served with a fried lobster ravioli on top. The soup was delicious and had an excellent depth of flavor, but I did find the ravioli to be a bit flavorless. I would order this again, or even try the New England chowder too. The entrees come with salad as well, they were bright and fresh and the dressings were great. Honestly, we both were so full by the time the entrees came, we barely touched them, but definitely took them home. The entree portions were huge. I ordered the Veal Milanese. The veal was pretty good, not as tender as I would usually expect, but it had good flavor. I love arugula too. The risotto was a miss for me, it seemed to be loaded with dried oregano, which didn't match the flavor profiles of the main entree and took away from the dish. It's been a few years since I've been to Chez Nous. It first opened in 2015 under different owners, providing a high end French country experience, complete with deliciously authentic food and snooty staff. It closed in 2019 before the pandemic, and reopened in 2022 under new ownership with a French-Italian inspired menu, with a dash of Cajun cuisine mixed in. My first couple experiences since it reopened were good, but a little confusing. The Italian and Cajun inspired dishes threw me off, mostly because I didn't understand the concept. I also popped by during Schenectady's first Tater Trot, where they made a delicious little potato puff, with a potato chip wedged on the top -- adorable and yummy. But last night my partner and I made reservations to try something new and really sit down for a good meal there -- we were not disappointed. As previously mentioned, the menu features a few different options, including a quick menu for Theater goers for around $50-55. There were four sections that each include a choice between two entrees, a starter salad, fresh warm bread, non-alcohol drink, and two desserts to choose from. The options vary from wild mushroom ravioli, to crab stuffed fish, and there was a gluten free and vegetarian options. The main menu had many other options, so I decided to start with the New England clam chowder, then the Chicken and Wild Mushroom Pappardelle, and ordered the Creme Brulee for dessert. My dish came with a starter salad and there was delicious warm table bread with whipped butter. The clam chowder came first and was delicious. Full of rich creamy flavor, nice chunks of pork, and of course beautifully tasty clams. I got the honey mustard dressing with my side salad and it was great with a subtle mustard taste, and I really appreciated they was they chopped down the cucumbers into small, thin, seedless slices and the tomato was diced into small 1/4 inch cubes, giving them an elegant and enjoyable texture element to an otherwise mundane dressing. The Chicken and Wild Mushroom Pappardelle was fantastic. It had a rich tasty tarragon cream sauce and great umami flavor. The pasta was rustic home made, cooked with perfect texture, and the mushrooms had the perfect bite. Truly an enjoyable dish. Finally, I ended with the Creme Brulee which blew us both away. The last time I had this dessert at a different restaurant, it was overcooked and not pleasant. But this one was flawless in both flavor and texture. Wonderful job! As for the atmosphere, it was just with you would hope. Calm, warm, inviting, and home-y. I believe there was very subtle music playing, and the seating was comfortable. The staff was extremely friendly and hospitable. They were extremely busy, and so we had to wait for a few things, but it wasn't terrible, nor was it through a neglect. They would check in regularly, and apologized for any delays. Overall, we had a great experience and will definitely be coming back. Chez Nous had a very impressive menu. All of the staff were so friendly and accommodating, we were a large table of 11 people. First off they allowed separate checks, which was amazing. The drinks were all good, I had the Jack Frost. I started off with the French onion soup, because it's a favorite. Theirs was pretty good , and great presentation. My husband had the calamari which was good. For entrees I had the beef and shrimp étouffée, it was definitely an original take on it. My beef was a little overcooked from medium, but the flavors were right. The presentation of the meal was great. My husband enjoyed his jambalaya. Visited during restaurant week 2024 and enjoyed the experience. Homey ambiance, good service and delicious food. Loved my stuffed sole, which had nice sized chunks of scallops in the stuffing under a delicious sauce. The "chateau briand" was tasty but misleading as it was just a beef tenderloin without the duxelles and pastry. A week has passed since we dined at Chez Nous and I've had plenty of time to consider what to write. But I'm still undecided what the final rating should be as our total experience was mixed. We were a party of six celebrating a combination retirement and birthday. Management was nice enough to offer us a private room on the second floor. This was perfect. While we are not a boisterous group, there was a lot of reminiscing to discuss and I'm sure it would have been annoying to other diners who came for a nice quiet or romantic dinner. The only downside was to the servers who would have to repeatedly climb the stairs to simply check on us or serve us. Speaking of servers, they were excellent - friendly, knowledgeable, and patient with us. I can only describe the meals for my wife and myself although I have the impression that the other four guests were pleased with their choices. Three appetizers had been ordered by the host, before we arrived, for all of us to share. All were very good, but nothing was exceptional enough to still stand out in my mind today. They were: - A cassoulet of stewed tenderloin of beef and mushrooms with beans, duchess potatoes, blue cheese, and crispy onions. - Large shrimp, lightly spiced and grilled, drizzled with honey, and served over rice. - Buttermilk marinated calamari, lightly breaded and fried, served with sides of garlic aioli and marinara. I was excited to see venison offered on the menu. I can't recall the last time I had it, and it was probably served then as part of a stew. Here it was offered as a grilled tenderloin with a brown gravy containing ingredients that I don't recall. I knew that venison was a very lean meat, but in spite of the Chef's care to not overcook it I found it dry and lacking in flavor. I reiterate, this is no fault of the Chef. I've decided that grilled venison is just not a dish I'll be looking to order anywhere, anytime soon. The accompanying asparagus was typical, but the cheesy filled puffed pastry was unique and tasty. My wife ordered the Baked Sole with a scallop stuffing - topped with a champagne cream sauce and served with asparagus and rice. She thought it was an OK dish but nothing outstanding. She was less impressed with the Bananas Foster that she had for dessert. She said there was too much of a spice, possibly cinnamon, that she believed unbalanced the dish to her liking. But I have to tell you that the highlight of the meal for me was my dessert, Chocolate and Peanut Butter Pie. WOW, this was good. A hard chocolate pastry on the bottom with layers of airy light peanut butter mousse, chocolate mousse, and peanut nougat. I'm sure we'll return to try some other dishes on the menu, even if it's just so I can have another slice of Chocolate and Peanut Butter Pie. read more

Four of us enjoyed an outstanding lunch today at Chez Nous on Union St. in Schenectady! First time there for all of us but we are eager to come back to try more selections. And eat dinner here as well. There were so many interesting items, we needed time to finally put in our order. I had the Lobster Bisque with a fried inhouse made lobster ravioli garnish; it was amazing in presentation and flavor. Curly fries were crispy not greasey. We even enjoyed sharing two delicious desserts. A friend and I experienced this place for the first time during restaurant week. I think it would be better when it's not a just promotional time. Starters were good, for the most part. I really liked the Irish Potato Soup. Normally it comes with bacon, which I don't eat, but not for the promotional event. My friend liked his shrimp starter but it came with dirty rice that was bland. Salads were good, bread was good. The sides were good. We each got chateaubriand. Veggies were done well, and the mashed potatoes were good. A bit dry, but the sauce for the meat made that a non issue. The chateaubriand wasn't great. I have never had it before, so maybe it's just not for me, but I felt like it was a lackluster main. I didn't dislike it, but I only ate half. My friend did like it and took my other half. Service was very friendly and they compensated for a small issue with the food with an appropriate recourse. We did have to wait a bit for someone to get to us, but they were also pretty busy. I liked that they had Wolf Hollow on tap. I appreciate the local rep, and it was a good beer. I also got an Old Fashion and it was fine. I don't totally love the space itself. I know this is not a good related thing, but the yellow walls in the main dining room was too much, the wall decor is kind of random, and there is a huge chest to store glassware etc on the side of the room that feels awkward. This is also a spot where you need to be comfy sitting very close to other patrons in a well lit environment, which isn't for everyone. read more

Went here for restaurant week and the chateaubriand was amazing, but the service was seriously lacking. Every course took FOREVER to come out, even the Caesar salads that seemed like they should have been out immediately (the vibe of it was just large batch very basic salad that you could make from a kit from the store). We were constantly out of water and were there for over 2.5 hours, despite having ordered right away. It also was a Monday night and the place was not crowded at all so I have no idea why everything took so long. The salmon was good, but I thought the sauerkraut with it was a weird side and did not pair well. The peanut butter pie and coconut cream pie were both amazing, but TINY pieces. We were so upset because they were so good and we would have like to have way more. My pb pie could barely stand up on its own because it was just a little sliver. The portions of all courses were too small for our liking. We left the restaurant still hungry, which is absurd when you have a 4 course meal... Will probably not be returning here, which is a bummer as the chateaubriand and peanut butter pie were amazing - just not worth the wait and high prices. read more

Went here last week as a party of four. Pros: I ordered the brandied salmon, which was phenomenal. Was a decently sized portion and the sides were very flavorful. My wife's pasta with chicken was delicious as well. The main courses were some of the best I've had locally in recent memory. Prices were very reasonable. Cons: The pacing of the meal was erratic. It took us 55 minutes to receive salad and bread (Salad was fine, very iceberg heavy, the bread was very good) and then ten minutes later we received our meals, before some of us had even finished our salads. It wasn't a particularly busy night either, so very bizarre. For cocktails, I ordered a negroni and my wife ordered an old fashioned, both of which tasted heavily watered down, which is surprising considering how both of these drinks are just alcohol. Could have been an off-night, maybe the normal bartender wasn't there, but for the price, the drinks were a massive letdown. I would never order a cocktail from there again - stick to beer or wine. They seemingly lost my reservations, despite getting an email which confirmed them earlier in the week. Wasn't a big deal, but spoke to some dysfunction. My review is largely negative, but it's filled with optimism, as the food we had was exquisite. I'd give it a 3.5 if that were an option, but I hope to see them improve. I'll likely go back, but I'll just make sure that I have nothing else planned immediately afterwards and to avoid the cocktails like the plague. read more

Under new ownership, Chez Nous opened recently on Union Street after 3 years of being vacant and a new menu is offered here which is not French like the previous Chez Nous and offers American cuisine at affordable prices. This scratch kitchen offers a variety of appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, salads, soups, handmade pasta dinners, steaks, chops, ribs, chicken, seafood, and desserts. Proctor's Theatre prix fixe menu offered on show nights. Chalkboard dinner specials are offered. I stopped in at the new Chez Nous for dinner recently. The place wasn't too busy and I was seated in the front dining room which looks similar to before with the same furnishings and chairs and updated artwork on the yellow painted walls in this 1875 historic house. There's also private dining upstairs and in the front side area and a back bar area with seating. At the time of this posting, they could only serve non-alcoholic drinks pending the liquor approval by the State. The server arrived promptly to take my drink order informing me about no alcoholic drink choices. I just got an ice water with lemon. For food, I ordered 2 meals just for this posting. I started out with the Fish Sandwich ($12 plus tax) served with choice of one side (I got curly fries) and cole slaw. The Fish Sandwich looked sort of like a fish fry which was breaded filet of sole, fried golden on a soft hoagie roll with golden fried curly fries (shoestring, lightly salted) tartar sauce and a tangy sweet cabbage coleslaw. This sole and fries were not too greasy. Next, I also ordered the Chicken & Sherry Pappardelle ($14 plus tax), which included a salad with baked bread. The salad was a good size which had iceberg lettuce, tomato wedges, cucumber slices, red onion, croutons, topped with real bacon bits, dressing on the side (I chose bleu cheese). With the bleu cheese dressing, my salad was similar to eating an iceberg wedge salad, very filling. The pasta dinner entree arrived shortly after I finished the salad The Chicken & Sherry Pappardelle had Fricassee of Chicken (breaded and baked with bone-in), rich cream, herbs, sherry with soft handmade pappardelle pasta & parmesan cheese. I had most of the pasta boxed to go so I could enjoy a dessert. For dessert, I went with a server recommendation and went with the Chocolate Marzipan Chambord Torte ($8 plus tax) which was presented very nicely like a piece of artwork, a long palette plate with a triangle layered torte with rich chocolate, thin cake layers, crushed almonds topped with whipped cream & cocoa powder and a fried wafer, plus strawberry sauce drops and cocoa powder on one end of the plate and powdered sugar on the other end. The dinner check for one was $36.72 with tax and before tip, for two entrees including sides and salad with one boxed to go and a dessert. Compared to what I'm used to paying back in eastern New England outside of Boston, this meal here in Schenectady was priced very fairly and I had plenty of leftovers. I was expecting pricey French food here just by the name of the restaurant and the previous incarnation. The service was very attentive from the server, hostess, and the chef. This place is now on my recommended list for a good meal at fair prices. read more

My family ate here before a show in Schenectady. We were looking forward to the diverse menu we saw before our visit. We were disappointed. The chicken gumbo was very tasty but the rest of the meal left a lot to be desired. The bread was burned (charred) on the bottom and the consistency was like a dry sponge. All salads were iceberg lettuce - no mixed greens or spinach options available. The ravioli sauce was sour. The service was the bright spot for our visit. As my wife just said, wasn't a bad restaurant, just not what we expected...at some level, perhaps shame on us as we came in expecting something similar to the previous Chez Nous, when clearly, the two are as similar as Burger King and Morton's. First time trying this place, what a gem. Steak and crab cake special was perfect and the Almost Chicken Oscar was mouthwatering. Presentation was clean and elegant. The scallop appetizer was a decadent treat. Service was exceptional! Very attentive, glasses were kept full, but in no way rushed. Ambiance is very mellow and relaxing. Walked into the front dining room and was hit with the smell of an air freshener plug-in. Frustrated because I am sensitive to the fragrance chemicals . The owner offered to unplug it for me but I felt the fragrance would still linger . Walked further back to an unused bar area that didn't have any air freshener and asked if I could sit there and eat. They kindly said yes so I sat there and had dinner . As I ate , though , I realized the plug- in was wafting over from the front and then realized why they had the plug-in. Smells moldy in there. Very old building , no surprise. Too bad. Food was ok but did not like the iceberg lettuce for the salad . Owner said avoiding romaine due to recalls . Ordered chicken fricassee, disappointed it was not bone -in chicken but just chicken strips . Good sauce though and good homemade pappardelle . read more

The service was awesome, starting with being greeted at the door and immediately be sat down to meet Ashley who was awesome! She was very personable and so friendly. My husband and I came here for a bite to eat for dinner the second day it was open. It lived up to the previous review by Ian--it was wonderful. I attached pictures of the dishes we enjoyed. We started with the salad their house-made sourdough bread and house-made dressings (the horseradish dressing was very good). They were included with the very reasonably-priced entrees we ordered. I ordered Chicken & Sherry Pappardelle (a herb-crusted chicken leg quarter on top of a sauce made of cream, herbs, and sherry tossed with Hand Made Pasta with Parmesan). My husband ordered Bolognese Cannelloni (3 Hand Shaped Pasta cylinders with each featuring a different meat filling: Pork, Beef, Sausage ), prepared with roasted in fresh tomatoes, and a Vodka Sauce). After our entrées, I ordered a slice of Chocolate torte and it was the dessert of my dreams. Its amazing presentation will make you for you to drool. (Did I mention that the chef was mentored by a German chef who shared his torte-making prowess with him? This restaurant shares the Chez Nous name of the preceding restaurant at this location, but he menu offers dishes from many cuisines. We went to Chez Nous website on Monday to make a reservation for 7PM on Thursday. We received the following response on Monday from their reservation site after submitting my request. * Thank you for your interest! We look forward to having you as our guest! We thought we were all set to go since we did not get any other word from them for the following 2 days. When I returned home on Thursday at 5:30 PM. I saw a note from the restaurant which they sent to us on Thurs asking if we could switch our reservation to 8:30 PM. Knowing that the restaurant closes at 9:00 PM I sent a note back that we did not want to switch our reservation time and that we would be there at 7:00. They never responded back by email, text or phone, so we called the restaurant several times. The line was busy for 45 minutes. Not being able to contact Chez Nous we went to the restaurant as planned at 7PM. When we arrived, we were told we did not have a reservation and could not be seated that evening. We were told by the Chez Nous staff that they took the phone off the hook since they were too busy to answer their phone. Is that any way to treat potential customers? read more

The restaurant was spotless and the yellow walls and wooden floors were welcoming and cheerful. The hostess was very friendly and pleasant. She was also very busy as were the waitstaff. The restaurant was full and we were happy that we had made reservations several days in advance. We were seated within five to seven minutes. Our waiter immediately brought water and the menus. My wife ordered the Irish Potato Soup, the Sliced Sirloin entree, and the Crème Brûlée. She loved her meal from start to finish. I ordered the Caesar Salad, the Chicken Marsala entree, and the Strawberry Shortcake. I loved my meal, as well. Our waiter was excellent, checked in several times, and was very pleasant.
