Wanted to give my business to a local independent Boulder businessman. I could've gotten a Honda car key fob for the same price from AutoNation but also didn't want to drive there. I wish I had as this took six trips and approximately eight weeks and phone calls and patience to get a workable key fob for my Honda CRV. Owner on the edge of rude quite often even though I was 100% patient with him. Seems like this is a hobby rather than a business. Listen to his phone message, not at all welcoming when you first call and his hours are quite limited. read more

I needed a spare key for a truck I had just purchased and the company that produced the key had a list of authorized locksmiths you could use. City Lock was the closest to me geographically so that is how I made my choice. Jeff was great to deal with and explained to me what I needed to know about this type of key. I would leave -5 if I could. I was promised that I would get a Key Fob COPIED and PROGRAMMED. However this did not happen and I was still CHARGED $150 even though not every part of the agreement was met. Besides being talked down to the whole transaction, and AFTER the whole programming process failed, I was then also told that if I returned in two weeks after returning the key fob I had originally brought in, and FOR AN EXTRA $100, I would receive a Key Fob that was guaranteed to work. This whole time and process was fruitless and the fact that I was charged anything at all to begin with is ridiculous. I would ABSOLUTELY AVOID this place! read more

Went to get 2 keys made gave the man a $20 bill the man assumed it was a $10 bill and gave me change for the $10. When i left i realized the error went back to the store it was closed. I went the next day and he insisted it was a $10 and would no. I refuse to go back to the store in the he would honor my request. I posted an RFQ on Yelp and they asked me to call. Even though the RFQ contained enough information for other providers to provide a quote, City Lock required me to call them with more information. I ended up selecting a different provider. The other provider had to drive 45 minutes to help with my lock and City Lock was located in my area. read more

$25 to tell me no. I brought in a lock to get keyed to the HOA master key which I had with me. He took the master and the lock, took it apart, and then asked for the master key plan. I didn't have one. Then he asked for the keys of all other units in the HOA. Of course I didn't have that either. So he said he couldn't key it to the master. Great, so he told me no. He put it back together and said that I owed $25. Huh? Sir, you should have told me your requirements BEFORE you did any work. Essentially, you charged me $25 to tell me no. I can't remember being more relieved or pleased by any service I ever received than my experience with City Lock. It all started with me going to Buffalo Lock & Key to get a spare key made for my roof top carrier prior to a camping trip. After two visits to Buffalo Lock & Key that included three technicians making six or seven attempts to copy a key, I had no copy and an original that didn't work as well as it did when I brought it there. So off to City Lock I went. Jeff, the owner, took one look at the key copy that didn't work and said, "They used the wrong blank!" I asked if he could make a copy and he said, "I guarantee it." Over the telephone, which he actually answered, he patiently walked me through my problem troubleshooting my issues step by step. And guess what? I went to replace my key fob....the $200.00 kind!! Jeffrey, the owner, said "let's just try a little cleaning inside" where the battery contacts are. He put in a new battery just to be sure. Now, here's my favorite part....works like new!! Refused to charge me anything...not even for the battery! The ignition lock cylinder on my Toyota wore out and it would not allow the key to turn so my truck was stuck. The dealership and my mechanic wanted between $700 and $1000 to replace the lock cylinder to remedy the problem. I called City Lock after getting these quotes. Jeff told me the answer is not to replace the cylinder but rather clean it and replace some internal piece. He could do it the next morning and with two replacement keys, full programming so that the door keys and the ignition all matched, he only charged $400! Jeff is detailed and takes pride in what he does, I found him honest, trustworthy and an overall nice guy. I hope I never need Jeff's service again but if I did I would head there and I would most definitely recommend his services. read more

Don't bother calling anyone else (I regret wasting weeks following other leads.) City Lock is the BEST place to go for CAR KEY cutting and fob programming! I bought a used SUV with only 1 key. I found blanks on Amazon but only City Lock both cut and programmed them. It was a tricky task since there were other keys {not in my possession} assigned to my vehicle; City Lock deleted them so that I have the only functioning set. After some criminals stole my car just weeks after the back end was bashed in I had to live with one key for years because these heinous people went on a joy ride and tossed my spare key. Replaced the case for the key fab to my car that had broken, at a lower cost than I would have ever found at a dealer. Even got a free battery replacement with it. That being said, it did take longer than it should have because they misplaced my order, then somehow the order didn't get placed. The cost is good, the service is friendly, and in my experience accurate, but it does seem that other reviewers may be accurate when mentioning need for improvement in organization. read more

I was very satisfied with my great service with a non functioning key fob (our spare one for my car) . I went in and told them my problem got it reprogrammed and a new battery installed . Plus I was educated on how the fob can be stored to close to the car can cause the battery in the fob to use energy thus using the battery in the fob discharges. We lost one of the keys to our Toyota and after getting a quote from Boulder Toyota for $350 we looked for other options. There are lots of videos and forums about keys but in the end this model is not programmable without special tools. To save some money I bought a key online and thought I'd have it programmed. After trying a couple lock companies in town I called City Lock. In the past I had a poor experience with a fly by night locksmith and was expecting more of the same here. Turns out the owner has been in business for a long time and has a deep knowledge of locks. I did get some initial attitude about purchasing keys online and their high potential to not work. The keys are proprietary technology from Toyota and the City Lock said the online key makers will just recycle the electronics from old keys and sell them as new. There's no generic remote key for recent Toyotas. City lock was able to program the key in a short amount of time and verified it worked. I'd use them again and recommend to others for your vehicle or other lock needs. read more

The only key for my Nissan wore out and I didn't have the code for the key. Other locksmiths couldn't solve the issue and offered me to replace every lock on my car. Another locksmith in Boulder told me to go to city lock since they are the expert. Jeff looked at my key and tried to figure out the code of it. Then he made a new key which worked. He solved my 1000$ problem for literally 40$. He is definitely an expert at what he does. He is also very kind and helpful. read more

Jeff at City Lock was terrific! At the recommendation of several other locksmiths in Boulder, I took him my newly purchased used Honda, hoping that he could determine why the key to the ignition didn't work on the door. He discovered that the door lock, for some inexplicable reason, had a different code from the one on the ignition lock. He rekeyed the door to match the ignition and sent me on my way (same-day service) for only $325--far less than the $600 to $1000 that others had supposed it would cost. Although he'd suggested that the keys which came with the car looked worn and might therefore need to be replaced, he found that the old keys worked perfectly on the new lock. As a result, he saved me the additional cost of $100 per key. Jeff is entirely honest and highly competent. I'll be calling him for any future service that I require, whether for my car or my home. I went to 3 different places to get a copy of my mailbox key and nobody could or would do it. The man at the counter was incredibly genuine and nice. It took him less than a minute and made me a copy for less than 4$. Him telling me to just come back if there were any issues was awesome because it was impossible to discern who had made the original key. Brought my Volkswagen in to have keys made, twice. One time I waited, the second time I was told to leave the car for the morning. In both cases the keys were not programmed. I was told to order keys through him rather than the key I brought in. Put a deposit down of $50 for the keys and did not hear back from him for three weeks. I had to take a trip back to Massachusetts and therefore I needed to have the keys made before I left. I had them made at the Volkswagen dealer in Boulder. First time no problem. When I asked for my deposit back from city lock he said no because that's what the deposit was for. So he now owns two Volkswagen keys, partially paid for by me which he will probably sell to someone else. This is an arrogant jack ass. Go somewhere else. read more

I personally appreciate his directness. He is very competent. I will always value competency over a thin smile. Worst customer service experience of my life. No exaggeration. The guy who apparently owns owns the place couldn't find parking in front of my building, and got upset with me when I asked him to walk. After waiting, because he told me he'd charge me for even just coming out, he said I was stressing him out and that I shouldn't live somewhere with a bunch of other espresso drinking snobs. He left me stranded at night with my sick dog outside of my house. Asshole move, and truly the worst treatment I have literally ever received. Ever. Do not use these guys. Call Boulder Mobile Locksmith instead. Those guys were prompt, courteous, and professional. The guy that runs this place deserves to lose his business. read more
