Cicis Pizza may be the most dramatically improved fast food chain in the country. I went there with very low expectations. I was really impressed with what I saw and ate. * * * Cicis has always been all about econo pizza. This is a place where poor people can take their whole families or a working class soccer coach can take the whole team after a big win. Increasingly the population they serve is Hispanic. When I was at the North Lamar Cicis, I was the only Anglo in the place except for some of the staff behind the counter. The change in Cicis reflects a sensible change in how corporations market to poor Latin American populations, both here and south of the border. * * * In the old days, the marketing department thought that what poor people wanted was the lowest prices they could possibly find. So the idea was to sell poor people junk at rock bottom prices. American corporations going into Latin America - and often local corporations with similar aspirations - would open up really lousy places in working class neighborhoods. Those stores lost money hand over fist. No one wanted to shop there. When the companies did market research - suddenly all the lights went on. They realized that people with constrained budgets try to squeeze the maximum out of every penny they have. The customers do not want to buy junk. The customers are looking for the best value they can get at a good price. So the trick is to turn out something really good while keeping your production costs under control. * * * Cicis used to be on the sell-cheap-junk-at-rock-bottom-prices plan. School lunch pizza was generally better than what Cicis put on the buffet. I last ate there fifteen years ago. I was not that eager to return. However, Cicis has made the transition to solid value at a good price. The difference really shows. The first thing I noticed was that the standard items that one finds on any pizza buffet were actually good. I had a fine pasta with tomato sauce, a fine spinach pizza and a fine pepperoni pizza. Later on, I would finish with a fine brownie. (Okay, the salad bar is still on the old plan. Ah well ...) More interestingly, Cicis has come up with its own "Spanish inspired" pizzas that do not show up at other pizza places in town. The absolute star of the show was a tomato-less pizza with pizza cheese and queso and bottled hot sauce. This item was totally fantabulous. I could have eaten eight slices of cheese and queso and hot sauce pizza. I would have happily gone back for a ninth. They also were running a pepperoni and jalapeno pizza. You can order pepperoni and jalapeno in tons of places elsewhere in Austin. But pepperoni and jalapeno rarely shows up on a buffet as a premade pizza slice. Their base pepperoni pizza is good. Their pepperoni and jalapeno pizza is outstanding. * * * Cicis is also a fun place to be. When I was there, they were showing the Mexico-Panama finals in the Copa America. This was a game that was well worth watching. The other entertainment was watching the big eaters. Since the buffet is prix fixe, lots of guys would go to the buffet, load up with stacks of seven or eight slices of pizza and then go back to reload a couple of times after they were done. If they ever have pizza eating contests that work on the same system as hot dog eating contests, I know where you can get some prime competitors. * * * I am watching my weight these days. So I was more parsimonious in my food choices. But if I could go back to the days when Samuel C. piled his buffet plate higher than his head, Cicis would have been a good place to do that. In Springsteen's hit song, there is darkness on the edge of town. In the case of Austin, there is a well lit, if somewhat bare bones, CiCi's on the edge of town. These two motifs may not seem too similar. But when Springsteen says he'll go there and pay the cost, I'm pretty sure he had 5.99 for all-you-can-eat pizza in mind. It is well-known what CiCi's flagship product is. All-you-can-eat pizza, pasta, salads and desserts for 6 or so dollars. If you are a pizza lover (and not an overly snobby one), this product is unbeatable. New pizzas keep coming out every few minutes, and while the toppings are rather standard, some pizzas are remarkably above average for the price tag: in particular, barbecue chicken and stuffed crust pepperoni could fly as decent at even a higher-up pizza place. The salad bar is standard (and veggies surprisingly fresh), so no trouble there. On the other hand, pasta... let's just not go there. The desserts are standard, if some a bit dry. The "Bavarian apple pastry" (for which I'm wondering if there is a legal reason it can't be called an apple pie) is the clear winner, although a person more evil than myself might actually remark that it's apple-sugar topped pizza dough. A special mention goes to the manager who, as reviews invariably mention, brings a surprising level of positivity and customer service beyond the call of duty in this otherwise conveyor-belt standard place. While I was getting my third bowl of soup tonight, one of the cooks told me they'd have fresh soup in about a minute. (That's unnecessary kindness, especially for a chain store.) - You can ask them to cook a type of pizza if it's not in the buffet - Wide variety of 20 or so pizzas with unique flavors - Fresh and extensive salad bar - The cherry tomatoes in the salad bar are very sweet - Hot chicken noodle soup - Garlic cheese bread is tasty - Dessert pizzas (cinnamon rolls, fudge brownies, etc... that my coworker loves but I never get) - Clean inside - Very cheap at only $5.99 per adult buffet (Back when I was in middle school, it was only $2.99.) - Nice atmosphere inside--it's not chaotic like the Mueller Cici's. - A couple of video or arcade games for kids to play at. - TVs showing sports games Cons: - Wish they had smaller tables for people eating alone. So this Cici's is in a part of Austin, that although only one exit away from me, seems to be slightly more hardcore and rough around the edges.That being said, I will willingly enter this area of town for the CiCi's pizza buffet. The owner is smart. This Cici's used to be seriously ghetto. Dark and dingy etc. Now it is really pretty. Completely remodeled, big tables, light, televisions. There are some games for the kids to play. All of the staff are friendly and helpful. The food, as always is good.Tons of pizza, pasta, salad and dessert. Not too shabby. I'm still doing the low carb thing, and they will make me a pizza without the crust. Hell yeah! And something about the salad bar and that Italian dressing. And hey. Its like 5 bucks, with drink. Our first time at this location, though we frequent a couple other locations. The crew was working hard at Sunday suppertime keeping up with the customers and sometimes the selection was low, but then it was back and new, hot pizzas were frequently being added and we were able to have all the we desired of our favorites. So we still payed then as she's handing the card back proceeds to inform us they do that only one time when someone aasks them... umm. Well it was my FIRST time there?? It's kind of scary that a place can afford to offer a buffet for only $6 (where do they get ingredients that cheap), but somehow they do. It certainly doesn't look or taste low quality. And they're always happy to make custom pizzas for my vegetarian family. Once we found sausage in the pasta sauce which had previously always been marinara, but we inquired and the owner said that that was a mistake for that one day only. But for my surprise that's not what I was expecting... in the buffet salad area was full and clean , nice dressing , great condiments completely full . The pizza area was looking nice and clean ...great looking pizzas butttttttt here comes the bad experience : pizza is my favorite item so I went ahead to serve my self 5 slices of pepperoni Hawaiian pizza...Pepperoni with jalapeños and supreme. None of those items were good all of them were flavorless you could not even taste the salsa marinara on it the only good item there was the garlic bread. For $6, the quality of this buffet is incredibly high! I took my sister and her four year old, and they loved the cheesy bread, cheese pizza and brownies. I loved the spinach pizza, pepperoni, and cinnamon dessert. We didn't make specific pizza requests (we're fairly easy to please), but I did see a "Cici's Pro" order a BBQ pizza which was delivered directly to his table. The person making the pizzas was very friendly, and if we'd wanted something specific I would have felt very comfortable asking. Pros: Great for kids. Great price. Good quality. Delicious food. Really was impressed with Peter,the manager in charge,. He was super friendly and the food was hot fresh and delicious. I usually do not go to a restaurant if they are closing within the hour but I was out voted by my 3 children and my partner. We were greeted very friendly when walking in the door which was very nice. Peter was behind the line throughout our whole visit smiling the entire time. When I asked for a fresh alfredo pizza he was totally fine with it even walked it to our table himself. This is the kind of service I wish we received everywhere we go. I love all the Cici's in town, especially this one and the one in Capital Plaza. Why? Lots of reasons. First of all, I love seeing all the little black and Hispanic kids eating here. And the buffet is priced right and the pizza certainly good enough, and you can special order (we always order pepperoni, onion, and jalapeno, and they bring it hot and steaming right to your table. And let's face it: their target audience isn't exactly the arugula crowd). Salad's good, too. And the staff, especially the managers, are always very genuinely kind and helpful and obviously working hard, and especially kind to their employees, I think. Love the place. Never been to a Cici's before. My sister told me years ago how good they were when she visited one out of State. I have eaten at buffet restaurants back home (Like Izzy's Pizza) and they were not nearly as good as this place. They are cheap and have pretty good food. There are not a lot of choices to choose from as far as items available (mostly pizza). The things they do have are pretty darned good though. I loved the salad and the dressings were not bad either (usually dressings suck at places like this). The pizza is pretty good and has a lot more toppings than Gatti's. The location of this particular Cici's is not exactly in the "best" part of town, but it was still very enjoyable. Everyone who worked there was VERY polite and helpful. read more

Gets a bad rap, but I've been going to Cici's for almost 20 years and I've always liked it. I even feel that it has gotten better over the years. Of course the highlight is the price, but even though there are other good pizza buffets in Austin, I don't feel that any of them are that much better. For unlimited pizza of various flavors, salad bar, drinks AND dessert, this price is hard to beat. The pizza was hot, and they did a great job keeping the buffet stocked (we all know how annoying it can be to have an empty buffet and have to wait for them to make more).
