We stopped in for pizza and gelato at their spot next door, Treat. We shared a pepperoni pizza and we're not disappointed! The crust had a nice char without being crunchy, the cheese and pep both tasted high quality and flavorful and the sauce had some nice herbs to brighten up the richness of the pizza. The service was reasonable, with the speed of getting our pizza a highlight, it was super quick. The gelato was also delicious - here the service was a standout being greeted and offered samples in a way that made you feel like they really wanted you to try some things and find your favorite. I've been here a few times recently this year and it's overall been a great experience minus this one thing: every time I've ordered pizza and subbed for non dairy cheese I've not been able to get it. They always run out right before they make my pizza and then let me know. What's so frustrating about that is that I'm paying full price while having to take toppings off because of dietary restriction and only add one thing on, which questionably I'm being charged for, only to not get it and have less of the pizza I want. The staff is always kind and helpful and quick, the pizza is always good and it definitely can take some time to get some time depending on how many people are there. But I wish and hope that one day I'll be able to get vegan cheese, and have a worth my spending experience. The space is really cute and simple, but it's not a dine area. It's connected to the Tucson top shot, which is a local bar, offering nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages, plenty of seating in that area that you can take over. read more

Ny family was so sad when we got the email saying they were closing the Hop Shop location, but overjoyed when we got the email a few months later that they were reopening. I recently went on a lunch date with my wife. We arrived right at opening on Saturday and we were able to get a table outside at the Hop Shop and we ordered a Big Dill and a Snake Bite. They have a limited menu, but the favorites are still there. You have to order in person, so that helps the kitchen not get too backed up. I'm guessing it gets busier at night, but still worth a trip! One of the best pizza spots in town!!! read more

First time and we will be back. This place is immediately only top two or three in town. (For reference, those are Time Market and Doughbird Detroit style.) Ordered the litmus tests of one cheese and one pepperoni. Both were excellent. The sauce is herbed nicely and the cheese is perfect. This is probably my favorite crust in Tucson. I'm grateful to have made it before it closed! How to sum up Ciao Down? Overrated, but still good. What I love:They aren't afraid to get a little creative with toppings. I will never ever try a pickle pizza, but I did have one with fresh jalapeños + pepp + hot honey (not new but executed well), and another one with cream cheese and a little raspberry sauce/jam. What I like: The dough is real nice--dense, glutinous, chewy but not TOO chewy. You'll want to eat the crust. What needed work: Every pizza I tried could have used a couple minutes in the oven. They're a bit stingy with toppings. Overall, this was really good bar pizza. Outstanding, even, for something you take to-go before shuffling over to the adjacent beer garden. But as a standalone pizza joint it's outclassed by quite a few places. Not bad, but nothing I'm going to miss too much. read more

So tonight was a very different dinner service. It's like all the older folks of Tucson came to Hop Shop and Ciao Down tonight. Some band was playing at Hop Shop. I'm not there for the band. I get there at 6 and see the long line. I'll wait to order. I grab a hop water and enjoy happy hour with my friends. The line dies down to about eight folks so I get in line. I'm in line for more than 20 minutes. I ordered and tell the guy I'm upstairs at point to where my friends are. About 20 minutes after I order, I'm going to the restroom and drop in to ask about my pizza as cook time is very fast on those oven types. They said it's coming up. I tell them again I'm upstairs and my order number is on the railing for them to see. I come in again about 20 minutes later to ask about the pizza. It's coming up. I tell them I'm upstairs. An hour goes by, my friends are winding down and getting ready to go home. I check on my pizza. Oh we didn't find you. I said I told you guys I was upstairs and my number was on the railing so you can see it from the entrance and downstairs. I got a cold pizza in a box that I won't enjoy with my friends. They tried to make it right by saying please grab some desserts. I don't really have a sweet tooth, but I grabbed a couple desserts. It was just a bad situation. The pizza was just OK from the two cold bites I had. Maybe next time will be better? read more

After a long day at the nearby PPA tournament, our party of six (3 moms and 3 kids) made our way to Ciao Down... We had worked up an appetite playing and watching pickleball so we were literally ready to chow down! The parking lot was packed but we managed to find parking and luckily the line to order food wasn't too bad when we arrived. The kids ordered their own pizzas and the moms shared a caprese salad, a heatwave pizza, and an order of artichokes. It took awhile to come out, but it was delicious! As others have shared, it's a fast casual restaurant housed in the Metal Arts Village... there is a bottle shop in the building so those that want drinks (wine, cider, beer) can find it there. There is also a mini bookstore on the property and there was a book club meeting happening while we were there. There is plenty of seating indoor and outdoor, and I think upstairs too... some fun vending machines, and more. We enjoyed our meal and had some treats (fresh cookies) on our way out for dessert. Stopped in here with my beer-drinking friend and our dogs after a short mile long walk along the Loop. It was 1pm and there was no line. My friend and I were seated nextdoor at the Hop Shop with our dogs. I went to Ciao Down and ordered a veggie pizza. The very friendly server then delivered the pizza to our table with two strips of chicken for each of our dogs. The pizza was delicious. The crust had a slightly sweet taste. The minute I initially walked in I noticed the decadent variety of desserts, and the fantastic rotating gelato selection. It's all fresh ingredients, and so creamy! They might be some of the best gelato in Tucson! In the past, I've had their cookies, and rice crispy treats, which have all been sensational but, their gelato is next level. We were greeted as we walked in. What a cute little spot for baked goods and gelato, even for your puppers. We ordered 4 cookies for $10, which I thought was a great deal, some gelato, and a ginger sorbet float. I chose two flavors of gelato, the coffee chocolate chip and pistachio, and both were really good. One daughter tried the peaches and cream and loved it. The ginger sorbet float was also refreshing on a hot summer day. All the baked goods looked amazing. There's a small area to sit and enjoy 2 tables inside and a couple outside. My friends and I have eaten here twice and the pizza is delicious. We have tried the Big Cheesy, Memaw's Meatballs, Legendary Snakebite, and Tres Amigos pizzas. I'll say it now: the lack of photos is actually an endorsement of Ciao Down's pizza. The pizzas hit the table and we were ON IT. A group of friends and I shared some Ciao Down pizzas (delivered next door at Tucson Hop Shop) at a recent girls' night, and they were great! We got a cheese pizza, veggie pizza, the Snake Bite, and the Bella Toscana. Of those, my favorite was definitely the Bella Toscana. It's a white pizza with mushrooms and sausage, topped with kale. I really enjoyed the salty earthiness of the flavors, and it felt more robust and filling than the other pizzas. All the pizzas had great crust -- tangy, chewy, and perfectly cooked. The pizzas came out reasonably quickly, and were steaming hot when they did! We'll definitely be getting more next time we're at Hop Shop! read more

On this laid-back Sunday, I wanted to have some pizza to go and enjoy the final week of regular season football. I love supporting local businesses, and Ciao Down not only met my expectations but exceeded them with what I now consider the best pizza I have had in Tucson and the surrounding areas. I love it when establishments have creativity and offer nontraditional choices. We ordered the Big Dill, the Legendary Snake Bite, and the Harvest Moon (see picture for descriptions). Pumpkin puree on pizza? Yes, please! There are at least five other pizzas I want to try before they change their menu. While there is no place to sit inside, there are plenty of tables for au fresco dining, with a pleasant atmosphere, and a craft beer and wine establishment next door. When my wife requested that onions be removed from her choice, the server asked some exploratory questions asking if the request was based on preference or if she had an allergy to ensure she was taken care of appropriately, which was very thoughtful. Ciao Down has my highest recommendation. We will be back many times! read more

This is one of my favorite pizza places I've tried. I love it when a restaurant has solid classic offerings and unique offerings. That's just what you get here. If you're in the mood for a simple pepperoni or margarita - they have it. If you want a unique flavor combo - they definitely have this. I highly recommend the Big Dill pizza - I've never tasted anything like it. I don't even consider myself a huge dill pickle person (like I never eat them out of a jar) and I absolutely loved this pizza. Let's talk crust - the make their own crust and they make their own gluten free crust. I've tried both. Top notch. Possibly the best crust in Tucson. Food is great! Extremely frustrated trying to order from this place the new one in Oro Valley and then on top of that trying to find the place. They have no phone number listed! So you can't do a phone in order, they're online order starts you off in Oro Valley put a directs you towards their Dodge location. They took over another restaurant's place it still has the old business name on the front of the building! Instead of spending some money and getting a temporary banner to hang on the front. I was driving around in the plaza for 20 minutes trying to find the place. I drove past supposedly where the restaurant was again and just happened to see a little sticker on the door with the correct name of the business. Very frustrating! read more

We visited the northwest store about a week ago and got a small vegetarian and a small bbq chicken. The veggie dough was very thin and all the toppings were paper thin. It had no taste, nothing. The bbq had the same thin crust but the sauce and chicken made it pretty good although the amount of toppings seemed sparse. We drove by the restaurant twice before seeing that the Witch Wich sign had not yet been removed and there was only a small sign on the front door that said Ciao Down. The owners should try those same pizzas at Barro's, they might discover some flavor and serving portion options to add to their own menu. read more

I've been to Ciao Down twice in the prior two weeks... Holy shmoly their pizza excellent!!! This is indeed artisanal pizza... beginning with the amazing crust. It has just a bit of crunch, then the chewiness, then the incredible flavors of your pizza take over and all three that I've tried I would definitely recommend. The Margarita Pizza was as perfect as could be, but wowzer, the fig and prosciutto pizza was a huge hit... and the Bella, mushroom and sausage and other good stuff I cannot recall, was my favorite, but I would never turn down any of the three. The folks working there were all very friendly, the facility itself, though small, was comfortable and conveniently located next to the Tucson Hop Shop, which I escaped to for a little beer while my pizzas were in the oven. This is a TEN STAR pizza place, no exaggeration. It's now also my favorite pizza place, which understates how much I love it.
