Found a random sticker in my salsa - Spoilt the perception of my neighborhood Chuys for life. I'm a regular at this Chuy's which is a block away from home. However, today was an damaging experience. As we dove into the salsa, we found a sticker (that is probably used to keep the cilantro together at a supermarket) swimming in my salsa. While mistakes can happen, we saw no acknowledgement from the waiter when we reported this. She just took the salsa away and brought us a new bowl. Tonight was our best experience at Chuys to-date! The service was fast and friendly, food was tasty, and the added live entertainment was superb! I personally love watching birds and don't mind them over my head or at my feet on the patio. After all, I did choose to sit outside. When the birds took it upon themselves to poop on the "very expensive" jacket of one fine older dame, we only thought it was the climax of our entertainment. We went to Chuy's for lunch today. Well, actually, we were waiting at 9:45 in the parking lot for them to open at 10:00. We were jonzeing, I'm tellin' ya. I'm a big believer of needing to know the right thing to order when you go somewhere... So, since Chuy's has about 987 reviews, I'll give you a quick, concise rundown of what to order and how to best enhance your Chuy's experience: 1. If the lot is full and you can, valet. Don't get creative and try to park at Fadi's unless you've got the tow truck company on speed dial. 2. All margaritas are pretty good. Frozens are actually pretty potent! You have "swirl" and "dot" options, if you just want a lil' strawberry. 3. When you get your chips, ask them to also bring you "creamy jalapeno". Think spicy ranch. Great with chips. 4. I can vouch for the following main courses to be great... my personal favorite: the Chuychanga with deluxe tomatillo sauce (see photo, it was looking especially beautiful today), the tacos al carbon, the soft chicken tacos, and the #9 Chuy's light plate (the one with the chicken soft taco and chalupa and guacamole). Etienne P ALWAYS gets the burrito that's "as big as yo face". He likes spicy and gets it with the Hatch Chile sauce. It's not my favorite but he loves it. 5. They make their tortillas on site so they are usually fresh and yuuuuuumy. 6. Happy hour is pretty cool and they have a big bar set up with free queso and what we like to call "fingeritos", which are flautas but my husband thinks looks like finger shaped burritos. and, finally.. 7. When I first came back to Dallas after going to college in Boston, I moved into the uptown area and have been here ever since. I felt like I've grown a lot since those first days in my early twenties. My wild ways have calmed and turned to those of responsibility, my interest in women has matured to the point where I've asked my girlfriend to get married, and I've outgrown restaurants for babies. And no, I'm not talking about Chuckie Cheese. I'm talking about Chuy's. Chuy's is beginner Mexican food. It's heavy handed on the sauces and dips, but light on the quality and presentation. It's a fun place to go and have an assortment of dips and queso while you enjoy a margarita, but I always feel like I sold myself short if I go for the full dinner. If Uncle Julio's is my strict, noble uncle who cooks with divine talent, and Gloria's is my cheap, whorish mistress who gets me drunk, then I guess Chuy's is my... frat boy cousin who likes to party but has no class? I don't know. Chuy's doesn't really fit into my comparison because these days it's either Uncle Julio's for food or Gloria's for drinks. The chicken and beef are always dry and shriveled in comparison to Julio's, the refried beans taste more like reHEATED beans, and the overall quality has just slipped as I've aged. Or is it me who has become more enlightened? The only times I end up at Chuy's are when someone else insists on going there -- or when an out-of-town friend visits that I haven't seen in a while. What the heck is wrong with you people. Yeah, you people that work at Chuy's. When I order a Patron margarita on the rocks with no salt that means using Patron and with no salt. Taking the drink back to the bar and wiping off the salt isn't getting me the drink I originally wanted. My drink was still salty from the salt that happen to fall in the glass from before. I'm pretty sure you didn't even use Patron for my 2nd margarita. Why do think I didn't even finish it? I just wanted to get the eff out. Also, I think it's kinda clever on your part to put silverware inside the bowls of rice and beans before you bring them out to us, but residual beans stuck on a spoon that was in the rice bowl is just disgusting. I'm with Leigh F -- my feelings for Chuy's change on a daily basis. Sometimes, all I want is their queso and a stack of flour tortillas on their patio; other days, I just want to pull my hair out with their loud decor. My favorite thing on the menu is their TexMex Cobb Salad. Strips of pico de gallo, cheese, fajita chicken, roasted peppers and green chiles, and avocado sit on a fresh bed of iceberg lettuce, just waiting to be drenched in their creamy jalapeno ranch dressing. The queso is pretty kick-ass. It's a little spicy, very creamy and goes well on their thin chips; but don't overload your chip, because it will definitely break. The salsa was fresh, fresh, fresh...It's fresh, fresh...exciting....chopped tomatoes thinly sliced with bits of red onions and fragrantly cilantro with a splash of lime. BEST salsa I ever had. I had a Pacifico cervesa , for the meal the Fajitas were to die for, sizzling with fragrance and it tasted good as it smelled, not like going to a movie theater, wherein the popcorn smells really good then when you eat it - it's not all that. The tortillas are tasty -warm, soft and chewy. Also had Fish tacos - that was better than good- the fish was lightly battered not greasy , the cabbage was thin and crunchy, the sauce was flavorful but not overwhelming and it had a splash of lime on it - just perfect. I was nervous at first, because I knew going into this review, I wasn't going to be kind. But, I am currently seeing that off to the right of my screen, 3 other Yelpers I follow gave it no more than 3 stars each, so I'm okay now. I don't like Chuy's. That's just the bottom line. Out of all the amazing Tex-Mex that's available to us Dallasites, it ranks the absolute lowest to me. I'd eat TBell's "meat" tacos before going to sit down here. It sucks because the look of Chuy's is classic Austin hippie and super inviting. But the food just lacks anything to be desired. A friend at work once insisted I try their shrimp taquitos that they have on special sometimes, and I was so upset and disappointed by what I was eating. The only saving grace, to me, is the salsa; it's freezing cold and the chips are served warm, which makes for a nice contrast on your taste buds. Chuy's major draw is their happy hour- their margaritas are reasonably priced around $5/ $8 depending on size, and with it comes access to a complimentary loaded nacho bar, complete with thin, crispy chips, queso, refried beans, ground mystery meat, salsa, and ranch (this is America after all). The rest of the food is decent Tex- Mex- solid fajitas, enchiladas, and tacos. Ambience is casual, and our service was good- out waiter visited our table often and made sure we were taken care of. The food here is alright, for the price I won't complain. But to be quite frank, from all I have heard about the place, I was not impressed. The food was good, everyone else seamed to enjoy their meals as well. I could see it tasting better after kicking back a margarita or two. The chips and creamy salsa served before the meal was quite good. The salsa packed more of a kick than I was anticipating, but most restaurants just joke around about their sauces. It's a good place for families to go, but unfortunately that also means that there are tons of screaming children and I often find it harder to enjoy a meal when I can't even hear my own thoughts about it in my head. At 2 o'clock there was a swarm of families with children and there was a minimum wait. Our waiter was a bit short, he disappeared instantly, we had to wait for silverware after our meals were delivered. FOOD STYLE: Tex-Mex LOCATION: Easy to Miss; Limited Parking Yo Quiero Mediocrity! Genuine, classic "Hole-in-the-Wall" eateries generally possess three characteristics: 1) they are hard to find if you've never been, 2) they are beloved local institutions, and 3) their food is exceptional or noteworthy in some respect. Of all the joints that grace this metroplex of sweltering concrete, condos, and congestion, perhaps none is more lauded or famed than the infamous Chuy's. Ask anyone in this town to ID a local "Hole-in-the-Wall", and, with a hungering smile, "Chuy's" is likely to be the first name to roll off their moistening lips. Nestled in the heart of the modest urban wilderness of Knox & McKinney, and tucked away in the brambles of a confusing pastiche of strip stores and backlots, Chuy's is not a place often discovered by passersby. Indeed, Chuy's most prominent entrance is not from the obscured front of the building, but (perhaps prophetically so) from the small rear parking lot, which can only be accessed through one of three dumpster service alleys. Were the path not already etched into the minds of millions, Chuy's could easily serve as a close second to the lonesome caves of the rocky Afghani hinterland. So a big 'check' for being hard to find. The next criteria on the list could pass without mention. Chuy's has legions of passionate devotees who's ardor for the humble eatery would do justice by the adherents of Reverend Moon, the blood-crazed supplicants of Kali from Indiana Jones, or the 20 deranged Germans who still cherish Michael Jackson as the unseated, uber-manly "King of Pop". Talk to fans, and you almost expect to find crowds of swaying disciples standing outside the doors, chanting "Kali Ma. Kali Ma!" Although, considering the logistics of the area, it would be more apropos if they were shouting "Par-King! Par-King!" (Get there by 11:30 for lunch or forget it.) You cannot underestimate the pull this restaurant has on some people. The stories of their devotion border on the religious - a man who moved to California 20 years ago who flies in 4 times a year just to dine at his favorite Tex-Mex-ery ... a person in my own office who eats lunch at Chuy's nearly every day ... and people who live 2 hours away who drive into DFW each week to feast on chalupas and queso. How many restaurants inspire that kind of love? Naturally, this brings us to the third criteria - the food. And it is here that the vaunted Chuy's Juggernaut comes to inexplicable ruin. In spite of all expectations and hopes to the contrary, the food is simply ... average. Strikingly average. Ignoring the kitsch, the puffery, and the remonstrations of the faithful, this supposedly favorite pit stop of Elvis Presley is little more than an 'El Fenix' or warmed-over Taco Cabana. There is nothing on the menu (nothing!) which is particularly interesting or compelling. Supposedly representing the best of 'Tex-Mex', the crowded menu offers a litany of the same-old dumbed-down, genericized and Americanized combos of tortilla, beef / chicken / shrimp, cheese, beans, rice, and salsa you'll find at any low-budget Mexican franchise in the US, served up as tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas, etc straight from the corporate franchisee handbook. Absent is any sense of the rich pantheon of flavors, creativity, and spices common just a mere pole-vault to the south. For example, Chuy's and its admirers rave about its fresh, home-made tortillas, as if the stuff were manna from the heavens. But they are so lacking in character and taste that in a blind test most people would think that they were eating a bag of Mission tortillas from the bread aisle at Kroger's. They are as inconsequential as the tortillas from Blue Goose, which are also freshly made and provoke the same question - why bother if this is the result? In general, Chuy's main offerings compare equally with the standard "Fiesta!"-brand frozen Mexican entrees you might find in your local Albertson's (with new improved White-Bread flavor!). It might explain the appeal as being one borne of comfort and familiarity, versus authenticity and originality. The shrimp specials do stand out as one of the better choices. But again, they're just okay, and taste more of the aquaculture farms of Thailand than they do of the petroleum-scented sweetness of real Gulf shrimp. The side dishes at Chuy's are especially bland and unlikely to pique the interest. The rice, refried beans, and pinto bean sides are flavorless and serve mainly to occupy decorative space that might otherwise contain the disappointment of diners. Even the regulars often leave their sides alone and stick to the watery salsa and chips. Chuy's obviously does appeal strongly to a large segment of the population, and my words will pass by them like so much barking in the night. Still, Chuy's aspirations to true greatness will likely remain firmly grounded for years to come. read more

I haven't had much at Chuy's that makes me want to go back. Chuy's is good for the atmosphere, the drinks, and the Elvis birthday celebration (which earns the 3 stars all on its own). I have had or tried the following menu items: big as yo face burritos, chuychangas, chili rellenos, enchiladas, and flautas. The burritos were huge, yes, but didn't really have enough flavor to make you want to eat the whole thing. Same deal with the chuychanga, but it's fried. Enchiladas are mediocre, flautas don't have enough meat in them and are drizzled with sauces that make them soggy. The chili relleno I had was very stringy. The best thing I've had there were stuffed jalapenos--I don't think they're on the menu but they were complimentary on the salsa cart one time and were some of the best I've tried. But like I said, I give this place 3 stars because I never miss the celebration on January 8 for Elvis' birthday. If you're an Elvis fan or just want to be entertained, this is the day to go. They have an Elvis impersonator who puts on a great show in the front room, and they pass out loads of goodies like elvis masks, buttons, even free Twinkies at the end of your meal! Ok, so Tex-Mex eateries are a dime a dozen in Dallas ... maybe a dime for two dozen, but locals should still be able to pick a good one from a bad, and Chuy's is definitely decent. On my four experiences eating here (four if sucking down margaritas counts), Chuy's is a safe bet for Tex-Mex. They have a killer happy hour, with free queso and great drink specials, always worth an extra star in my book. I definitely wouldn't call it "authentic Mexican," but hell, what do you expect with tacky Elvis memorabilia in bright colors covering the walls? Plus, they sell t-shirts, a definite sign it's a touristy hot-spot. Nonetheless, the food is good. If you're with someone (or you are someone) who likes the Tex-Mex basics, it's hard to go wrong here with tacos, fajitas, or enchiladas. I like the guacamole tacos, for those who want to avoid meat. And margaritas, definitely worth trying the margaritas. There's often a wait and parking sucks here, be warned. Rarely are there available spots in the tight lot behind the restaurant, but otherwise, worth a trip. read more

If you're looking for greasy, fried, cheesy, gooey, heavy Tex-Mex, this is your place! Went here with some friends for drink and food and drink (mostly drink actually). The margaritas are acceptable, and there is plenty of fat on the menu to offset the alcohol.... We shared an appetizer plate: the nachos were good, guac acceptable, flautas OK, and queso yucky (tasted like made from a powder or something)... however, we still ate it : ) I had the fish tacos which were quite good. Really enjoyed the jalapeno and cilantro cream sauce served with them. Also tasted the beef fajitas which were acceptable. Would I go back? Probably not unless drug back by the crowd. God, this place. It was awful. I was born here in Texas, and have always lived here. I know great Tex-Mex when I taste it. Most you city-slickers wouldn't, so trust me on this. The queso tastes like Velveeta. Melted velveeta. It is thick, THICK, and not real queso at all! I could not eat it. The chips are oily. Salsa was watery. I ordered a fajita plate, and it was messy and greasy and did not taste like real Tex-Mex. It tasted like something I could make at home with canned food. The ONLY redeeming quality about this place is the big soft drinks and the fresh tortillas (but even they taste like they're made with dirty water). Food was so bad and unreasonably overpriced, I didn't finish. Service was terrible. We waited for 45 minutes from the time we got in, to get our food. Went on a Thursday night, place was PACKED. The decor looks so filthy and the floors were gross. A TON of mothers with their loud, crying babies. One was sitting right behind us, burping up stuff. Loud, drunk people everywhere. I'm a huge fan of the food at Chuy's but not really a fan of the wait. I've never been to Chuy's when there wasn't a line out the door and at least a 10 minute wait. Some of my favorite dishes: -911 Hot Plate -Classic Tex-Mex Enchiladas -Veggie Fajitas The tortillas are made fresh right in the restaurant and they're always warm, soft and chewy. The salsa is kind of hit or miss depending on the day you go. Sometimes it's really spicy and other times not so much; it's inconsistent, but definitely fresh. They also make a mean Texas Martini, and of course they carry Sol, Pacifico and Modelo. My running club did the Meet in the Heat social runs at Chuy's this past summer and it was a great place to hold these events. The Hubcap Room is perfect for larger groups. The patio is nice midday or after the sun goes down, but it gets all the afternoon sun. read more

With a fun atmosphere and a good happy hour, Chuy's became a favorite of mine. I haven't really ordered many real meals here, just chicken nachos and the chuychanga. Both were tasty and quite large, but nothing out of the ordinary. Typically, I come for the $3 house margaritas or $6 Texas martinis (Mon-Fri, 4-7pm). During happy hour, you can get nachos, too. Yum! Oh, just a note, if you don't like Elvis, you might not really like the decor here. It is a bit on the annoying side. Also, parking sort of sucks. I'm not a 'rita person so I can't really speak to that, but I am a Tex-Mex person so that's where I come in! I really like the chips- they're the uber-thin version so people either love them or hate them. They miss the mark on the salsas, though- the mild is similar to a watered down ketchup, while the hot is akin to a watery pico de gallo. The jalapeno ranch is really where it's at! I'm pretty sure that shit wasn't made for dippin chips in but it shoulda been! And the tortillas are homemade and fluffy delicious if only they were served hotter. The main reason I come here is for the following menu items: Mexi-Cobb Salad with beef fajita meat and cilantro lime vinaigrette- I don't normally like salad if this tells you anything. Chicken Tortilla Soup- yummy Chili Relleno with ground beef and red sauce- I love the crunchiness, just wish they would put more sauce. Deluxe Chicken Enchiladas- i love this deluxe tomatillo sauce they put on them (still wish there was more and I wish the chicken was seasoned better) also- what the hell is up with people not putting cheese on the refried beans? I've gone back and forth with this place. WhenI first moved to Dallas 5 years ago, I was brought here...and thought I had died and gon to tex-mex heaven. Over the years, after experiencing more and more Dallas Tex-Mex....I realize it isnt really the food that brings people back, its the food combined with the cool atmosphere and tasty alcoholic beverages :) The decor is my favorite...every room is different, booths are big and roomie, and you have the buzz od uptown all around you. The Food is above average.....their burritos as big-as-yo-face are awesome, chips and salsa definitly hold you over....and their chicken dishes are great for people not wanting to bust their diet. Drinks....get to the drinks,right? Well..I'm fo sho a fan of their margaritas....they never fail to make any troubles I might have fly right out the window. And if you go for brunch, they dont dissappoint with their mimosas. All in all....especially if you are inthat area, you wont go wrong with stopping in and getting your tex-mex on.
