I LOVE Meso Maya! The review is specifically for the Dallas location here. I give the Plano location 5 stars! The good- the ambiance is so cute! I love the outdoor eating area, which is where we requested to sit. Inside is nice, but dimmer and more noisy with the music. The chips and salsa are always fresh. Their salsa is very unique and one of my favorites. Our waiter was wonderful in checking on us. And my chicken tacos were delicious as usual. The black beans and rice are always seasoned to perfection here. The miss- my boyfriend's enchiladas tasted like they were made with experienced dairy/ cream. He actually woke up today feeling nauseous, and I suspect it may have been related. The enchiladas here are usually pretty yummy too! IYKYK. Pozole cravings are real and powerful. Last night I needed to feed the demon so I searched Yelp. The results returned several choices and I decided to order delivery from Meso Maya because they are close and I was hungry! I've been there for salads and have enjoyed their "sopa de lima" in the past. The pozole rojo I received was sad and disappointing. I've included a photo. It seemed that this soup, which is meant to take hours to perfect, was created for quick assembly. The pork, instead of being slowly braised was clearly boiled, then indiscriminately cut into chunks with no effort to trim wide veins of fat. The broth, which should be deep in chili flavor and rich from the pork was just chicken broth with the chili seasoning added I suppose when it is assembled for an order. The toppings provided on the side were adequate for the most part, but did not include any lime, which is kind of a requirement. The serving size was large, as it should be at a $13 price point, but unfortunately I couldn't eat more than a couple of bites. So a day later, my pozole monster is still tormenting me. Ever since trying in Mexico for the first time I am hooked on this delicious iced espresso and coffee liqueur drink. This was such a nice clean spot for lunch! I did take out and I got the pozole rojo ($7) and pastel de mora ($9). The bartender was super quick in getting my order and preparing it. I really appreciate that they packed every part of each item separately so none of it got soggy. They even added a bag of complimentary chips with salsa!! If you're looking for a (pork) shoulder to cry on you might have hit the jackpot. The juicy pork with pickled red onion is a match made in heaven. However, the star of the show had to be the Budin Azteca Camaron. The roasted creamy tomatillo sauce doused over shrimp and house made corn tortillas layered with three cheeses is the combination you've been searching for. I imagine it's how Lewis & Clark felt when they met Sacagawea. This is the type of dish your mom orders, and you take home the leftovers even though it's her birthday dinner. Met with 3 friends there who got to the restaurant before I did. I arrived several minutes before happy hour closure. Waitress takes my house margarita order and says i made it just in time. Comes back 5 mins later, 1 minute after HH close time and tells me she can't honor it because it's one minute past the time. It was honestly irritating but ok, I ordered regular drinks. We all ordered soup as appetizers and an entree. Two soups come out and that's it, then entrees few minutes later. We had to ask for the other soups which arrived after the entrees. We did not receive any water refills. A manager came to the table to ask if everything was ok and one of my parties very politely just gave some feedback on the HH drink issue and the soups not coming out. She 'apologized', then did absolutely nothing to make it up to us. The food was ok but we were quite turned off by the customer service, or lack thereof. We will not be returning. read more

I am not going to change my rating from 2016 but for different reasons. In 2016, when this restaurant first opened, the atmosphere was just too noisy and crazy to be enjoyable. This time, 5 years later, the reason for 3 stars is the food. The service was fine, no complaints. I went to Open Table for a reservation at 5:15 on a Saturday and got a reservation for 6pm--every time slot was open, which says something. Several restaurants have opened up at that intersection which clearly have cut into Meso's business. We were seated in a nice room by ourselves for awhile. We started with guac, which is a very generous portion. But it lacked salt so we had to add. The free salsa was no longer smoky as I remember it. I had the mole poblano and while it was not bad, the mole lacked deep flavor. Before, it was deeply flavored and complex with a slightly sweet undertone and a little kick of heat at the end. This time, it was just bland, no flavors that stood out. It was simply blah. Mexican food is supposed to be a celebration of flavors, spices, and contrasts. This mole no longer is that. The wife had the ceviche salad and the seafood tasted moldy. She did not eat it because she was afraid of getting sick. So that was a waste of money. Overall, it was a disappointing meal and I doubt that we will return. For many years Meso Maya was our go-to and our favorite restaurant for non-Tex-Mex Mexican, but I think we need to find an alternative. read more

My carne asada was perfectly cooked, with every bite tender, juicy and very flavorful. Beans were great, and the sweet corn tamal was delicious, although I would have given it a big pinch of salt. This restaurant is one of our favorite Mexican restaurants since moving to North DFW, Texas. It's a good distance from our home but any chance we get when visiting Dallas, we make our way here. Their food, drinks and service are all fantastic! I've had most of their enchilada and taco plates (all great), and I believe my favorite dish has probably been their mole chicken plate. They also have both green and the red pozole. Some of their plates come with fried plantains which are insanely good. Today we returned and my husband had the carne asada plate. He loved it. Great lunch with Tiki Hubby and Gma. Even on a Sunday Brunch time the noise level was not bad as Gma does not do well in loud restaurants. The service was superb, so attentive to our every need. The food was delicious. Between us we tried house salad with a lite fresh dressing with apples chicken taco, cooked in a delicious seasoning. Tiki hubby had the chicken Boudin and I did the shrimp quesadillas they are seasoned to perfection with pineapple and shrimp with large grilled shrimp. I have absolutely no words for how good this was, and I am *thrilled* there is a location near home in Fort Worth. The queso poblano is rich and creamy, the chicharrones were not what I was expecting, but delightful and tangy, with homemade corn tortillas that were charred the exact right amount. The mole poblano enchiladas are different, but oh-so-good, and the carnitas tacos are to die for. Every dish balanced and composed, with comforting flavors that make me feel like I'm sitting at a table in someone's grandmothers kitchen. We ended our meal with the pastel de moras (blueberry cake, basically) that's topped with heavenly Mexican vanilla bean ice cream (and I swear they've got to be making it in house). After several "let's give it a try" failures eating out this week, I'm happy to find a place that's worth every bite--and every dollar. read more

Not great. Service was just okay. Literally serviceable. Environment was bland and nondescript, the restaurant was too warm, and the lighting was so bad - yellow and dim - that the menus were actually hard to read. Shrimp tacos - shrimp was grilled well and the peppers were good but... it's like someone thought they should put shrimp tacos on the menu without actually thinking about what shrimp tacos should be. You need at least a white sauce if not a white+spicy sauce, plus a slaw, garlic, and lime, maybe a touch of onions. Don't try to wing it with shrimp tacos by putting a bunch of grilled stuff in there like it works. It doesn't work. Short rib chile relleno - from the menu description, we thought the chile relleno was going to have a short rib element in it. No. It was just cooked short rib stew (with dried chile based sauce, kudos on that), rice, and a chile relleno served on the side. Granted, the chile relleno breading was delicious. But the filling was nothing but unsalted, unspiced cheese. And this plate made no sense together. I mean, you could spoon some of the short rib over a bit of the chile with a bite of rice and it was good? But it still made no sense together. Carne asada - I must admit this was extremely tender and amazing! I can see why it's a favorite. Elote was terrible - and it was my first time actually trying it, so, a big disappointment. I assumed I was getting a couple of pieces of corn on the cob with the works. Instead, it was a plate of corn that I don't think was even fresh cut off the cob, plus cream, lime, and cotija cheese. So bland that I was desperately looking for a salt shaker at the table - and there was none. I ended up spooning tiny bites of the table salsa in it just to add flavor. I know elote must be better than this or people wouldn't talk about it like they do. So I will try it elsewhere. Beans were unmemorable. Rice was fine, but I am not as over the moon about it as I wanted to be, considering that everyone said it was so unique. Chips were medium thick and crisp. Loved that. The table salsa was unique and delicious. We also got the queso - which, be aware, though I was okay with it, it is more of a queso blanco. I would have preferred a cheddar base. Nothing cohesive or interesting here. And overpriced considering. Won't return. read more
