I have to give a HUGE SHOUT OUT! to the people who assisted me my last visit. I'm from chicago and really love their jalepeno ranch. Like, OBSESSED, LOVE, EVERYTHING! So, I'm from chicago, and stopped here not only on the way in, but on the way out of texas. On my way out, i requested as much jalepeno ranch as I possibly could get, packaged enough to where it wouldn't spill on the flight home. The waitress was super caring and packaged it nicely and securely, and didn't even laugh in my face (which i probably would have if i were her for asking such a ridiculous thing!)... they even sent me home with a HUGE bag of chips. Excellent service and very reasonable pricing. I had the chicken enchilada and chili rellno with green hatch chili sauce with charro beans. Very tasty and large portions. Companion had the stacked enchilada with green rice and charro beans. Was very happy with selection. They offer a wide range of local brews and Mexican beers as well and full bar. I recommend calling a head as they will reserve and put you in line and it is sometimes very busy. This is a very popular location in n Austin. We ate there for dinner. We had chika chika boom boom. i love it, my friend loves it too. Perfect food, perfect portion, perfect sauce. It was crowded (probably because of saturday night?) but the waitress was really good and she was able to maintain her skills. We got our food pretty quick and dont forget to get the creamy jalapeno too. The price was alright. One thing i dont like was their booth, chairs. Oh my, they need to replace them badly. Creamy Jalapeno Sauce! Sounds delicious...doesn't it? Yeah...I wouldn't know. Our server failed to bring us any. Yes, I did ask. Apparently, I didn't deserve any. Well, to say Chuy's is good would be an overstatement. On the other hand, saying it's bad would also be an overstatement. I guess the most appropriate thing to say is...it's just kinda there. Other than forgetting my Creamy Jalapeno Sauce request, my server was...um...efficient and cordial? Dude, I can tell you aren't happy about your job, but a little personality and attentiveness goes a long way. The hostess, on the other hand, was adorable and bubbly. I can take or leave the food. It was pretty much the standard Tex-Mex fare with nothing outstanding about it. My companion had the taco salad and was mighty disappointed that the meat had no seasonings in it. He found the entire dish to be bland. My chicken enchiladas were adequate. The accompanying rice was overcooked and bland. While waiting for the food to arrive, I read that you have a choice of rices and beans. Damn you again server! No mention that I had options! I don't know what to tell you about Chuy's except that the food is all really heavy and they have no idea how to make a burrito, but somehow I love it. And the staff is super cool. Dustin was our server and I'm looking forward to a fun, drunk night with him! Baja Tacos loaded with their homemade jalepeno ranch sauce is soooo good! The Queso is not veggie friendly, but our server told us about the 'Boom Boom Sauce' that isn't on the menu and that is a really spicy cheese sauce that somehow my burrito was swimming in. They make their tortilla chips in-house and they taste almost as good as El Milagros! They have 1,000 hand carved and painted wooden fishes all over the place and Elvis paintings and other things. Damn if it isn't always the same. Like really. The same every time I go. And I guess that's a good thing in some ways. But, in others, it's a little annoying. Yeah, their food is overpriced, and you're paying for the "crazy" atmosphere and hip servers. But it was Sunday and my dad wanted something close by and Tex Mex. The first couple of places were closed. I had the Roasted Chicken Sopapilla, which is not on the menu, but you can order it instead of a burrito. I used to get this even back when I was in High School. And it tastes the same. Not bad. But I ordered the hottest sauce they have on it, instead of what I used to get. Tasted the same. No difference in heat or anything. Hrm.. Well, at least I know what to expect when I go there. It's just really mediocre, for the most part. read more

I had a cocktail and the enchilada plate. Well the bartender or who ever made my food must not have washed his/her hands because i got such bad diarrhea all the rest of the day. And that's the only thing i had eaten that day.My friend was in the same boat as me. Not sure what it was but it wasn't good for me! I don't like Chuys. And I feel out of the loop - like it's a joke that I don't understand or a Zen Koan that I can't wrap my head around. I like TexMex. I like dives. I appreciate irreverant shirts, sassy waiters with tattoos and ragged shorts. But I don't like the food. It's close to what I like. It's greasy, cheesy, and spicy - all good things. Maybe they're using the wrong kinds. The cheese tastes like melted velveeta not cheddar or mozerella and the spices are cilantro and pico de gallo - which I don't like. So to all of you that love Chuys - I'm jealous. They have strong mixed drinks. And good chip, but it isn't my favorite kinda place. I enjoyed the Elvis Memorial Special - of course I didn't eat it all - even the King would struggle with a plate of food that large, but I don't crave Chuy's food the way I want to. We love Chuys. We don't have Chuy's in Vegas so we try to visit Chuys when we visit Austin. This week we've been to 3 and this was our 4th. We just love their food and the servers' energy and atmosphere. Never been to this location. Very empty but we were there at 2 pm. Service was sooooooooo slow. We had to ask for napkins and silverware. Ordered queso and it never came out. We had to ask the waiter again and he brought it out. Shared a dish with my daughter. Told the server we were sharing. He didn't bring us extra plate. She wasn't sitting right next to me so extra plate would have been good. Asked for extra plate and after a long while, brought us a bread plate. (One Chuy's even brought out the split dish already split, but this place gave us a bread plate. ) I ordered a smal tortilla soup. It was cold. I hate cold soup. He didnt xome by to check on the food when served so I couldn't tell him. Only had 4 silverware for 5 people. Asked for 5th one, never got one and he never came back after delivering the food so I ate my enchilada with a soup spoon. He came when we were almost done. Never checked to see if the food was good. Just when we're almost done. Next, went to the counter to get a t-shirt. Bought one 3 days prior but they said the shirts were on sale for $10 for the ones on the wall and $8 if they were hanging. We were standing at the counter for at least 5 to 10 minutes. No one... then a gal who was sitting down at a diner table got up after talking to her friend and asked if we needed anything. She was too busy visiting her friend to come help us. So, we told her a shirt we wanted, which she said were $10 each... only to tell us its $16 because of the special colors on the letters. We didn't buy a shirt. I'm very disappointed with this experience. I do not like writing negative reviews. I will write excellent reviews of the other Chuys but this one, they really need to retrain their staff. Very bad experience. I almost disliked Chuys today because of this location. My wife and I typically frequent this Chuy's and the one on Research. The food is pretty much the same at both locations, but the Chuy's on Research is extremely busy almost always, and the service is quite frankly sub-par because of it. Today we stopped for a quick post-walk meal (hah!) and had a couple of Diet Cokes, and we split the appetizer sampler. The service was great, as we were thirsty from our walk and sent the poor waiter back at separate times to refresh our drinks during our short stay. The food was hot and well-prepared. For a Sunday afternoon, post-rush, you might expect the kitchen to be off of its game, or even slow, but the food was wonderful. The appetizer sampler itself consists of 4 bean, cheese, and jalapeno nachos (each half-mini-tortilla size), 4 chicken flautas with a small amount of ranchero sauce spread across them, a small serving of chile con queso, a mini-chicken quesadilla (think the size of two of the previously described nachos), and sides of sour cream and guacamole. Everything had the perfect spice for a meal served to multiple people (it didn't go overboard on the heat), and a good selection of appetizers to choose from on the plate. The only negative I have about the food is that the guacamole portion was small, understandably (price). What amazes me more than anything else at Chuy's is the quality of food for the price. It is very rare that you receive well-prepared (properly prepared, spiced, and cooked) and multi-textured foods with service like this, at this price. In other words, unless my wife or I have a craving for something else, this will be the de facto non-dinner meal we have moving forward. The only overall negative about Chuy's, and this goes for all locations (and most all Mexican resturants due to the nature of the cooking), is the aroma that it leaves on you. I mean, that's some hefty stuff... do the prescribe something for their employees, or have some magic cure? Do they pay for their clothes? Wow. read more

You know, I don't like writing bad things about places that seem to have good workers or is managed properly. This is just about the food. The staff all seemed like good people, and there wasn't anything disgusting about the actual place. The food is just poor. Its like Taco Cabana food put on a plate. The flour tortillas were the best thing about the carne guisada plate I ordered. Everything else tasted like it was frozen or like one of those "Hungry Man" dinners. One positive was their salsa. It was a very fresh pico de gallo and the chips accompanying it were good too. As for myself, I really don't dig on chips & salsa too much, so its hard to put the weight of the restaurant on just that. The place seemed to be full of business people, and they all had the hunger in their eyes. I found that a bit frightening, especially after I tasted the food. This review is about the tortilla soup at Chuy's. It's good. Excellent chicken flavored broth, big pieces of shredded chicken, chunks of soft veggies (carrots, onions, squash, a segment of corn on the cob, cilantro), a little shredded cheese and extra thick tortilla chip strips sprinkled on top. Some people may find the soup a bit "too much broth, too little stuff in it" - but I like it. Yes, the area is a bit sketchy at night, but get over it and get your tushy in the door. I was here last Saturday night with a friend for dinner and sat on the patio (when it was only about 80 for the high) about 8 or so with no wait. Food was good, as usual. I LOVE the creamy jalapeno sauce!!!!! That is my main attraction to Chuy's although the chicken fajita taco salad is really delicious. We started frequenting Chuy's a couple years ago when my sister-in-law moved close to one. It had been a few years since I had dined there at that time and I was disappointed to find that the wonderful stuffed sopapillas were no longer on the menu....unless I'm just missing them somehow. That is my only complaint. The salsa is tasty although I always request the creamy jalapeno and then proceed to od on it. And now that I have discovered the taco salad...I am always a happy camper. Is Chuy's technically a chain restaurant yet? We've been going to the Austin locations since well before they branched out to other cities, so it's hard for me to see them as a chain, but they do have the benefit of being incredibly consistent. Considering how tasty their food is, that's a good thing. As usual, the waitstaff was extremely friendly and the food was great. Although we live within walking distance of the location at Research near Duval, we drive to this one because both the wife and step-daughter are migraine-prone, and as this location doesn't have the hubcap decor, it's not nearly as loud. Don't get me wrong, it's not quiet, either, but the locations with the hubcaps on the wall are amazingly noisy, even when they're not all that busy. We did have one problem during this visit -- our taco shells were stale. We reported it to the waitress, and the manager came out, apologized, and offered to make us fresh tacos with freshly fried shells. We were already nearing full, though, so we declined, but the option was there, so kudos to the team there for making things right. Mistakes happen and it's always easiest to gauge a place's customer service skills when they're having to correct an error, and the staff couldn't have responded better. read more

I know there's a lot of hype surrounding Chuy's, but I just don't get it. Service was very slow despite it being a weekday evening with almost no one in the restaurant. It took 30 minutes for a friend and I to get seated, but others walked in through the door and were almost instantly seated. My friend checked with the hostess and she said she "forgot" to add us to the list. What list? The restaurant was almost empty! The chips and salsa were pretty good. I ordered some of the chicken enchiladas and was left disappointed. They came out lukewarm and some of the cheese wasn't even melted. The food was rather bland too. Nothing special to it. For the prices they're charging, I'm expecting something a little better. I've had much better Tex-Mex than this. Don't believe the hype. read more

Totally embodies the "Keep Austin Weird" mantra, while at the same time, backing up the quirkiness with solid tasting dishes. Chips and salsa are prefect but ask for the creamy jalapeño ranch dip as well. Customer service can be a LITTLE hit and miss, depending on which location you go to and what time of day, but overall its solid. The traditional beef and chicken fajitas are GREAT, the burritos are awesome and specifically the Hatch Green Chili Enchiladas are also some of our faves off the menu. Also, get there for Happy Hour, you won't be sorry. Yes, this is a chain restaurant, but the Austin original is the exception to that rule. Its consistent, its fun, its charming, its an experience, it weird, and perfectly "Austin" in every way. Bottom line... Food: A+. Consistency: A+. Customer Service: A-. Let me say first and foremost, I LOVE Chuy's. Love it. Love it. Love it. Unfortunately, this location shows a consistent inconsistency. First, their chips are often over-fried (if you've ever had overcooked tortilla chips, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about) rather than the perfectly crisp and delicious that I've come to expect from Chuy's. Second, their waitstaff is greatly varied, from the interested and attentive to the magic disappearing waiter. Third, their protocol for takeout seems to change every time we do takeout (which is not infrequently). Should we see the bartender (btw, Bartender Marty is very friendly and helpful) about our order? Should we go stand over by the chip bar (which they never use, btw)? Should we go through the host stand? Don't know because it will change every time. Fourth, and certainly not insignificant, the quality of the food at this location is wildly inconsistent. From spot on one night to pathetic the next. (And that's not even counting the rubber band in my rice). Lastly, and this applies to all Chuy's locations: why don't you allow dogs on your patio? For such a dog oriented chain (cf. t-shirts; River Oaks location bar), y'all are certainly very dog, unfriendly. Let's put it this way, if someone told me that this is where Chuy's starts all employees before determining whether they're worthy of being moved to a more favored location, I would totally believe it. The menu is packed full of favorites from Chuychanga to Fajitas. The sauces are also great and everyone loves the Jalapenjo Ranch! They have a great happy hour nacho bar that they serve up for free during certain hours. The Tortilla Soup is one of my favorites! I often order To-Go from the N. We can get in and out (especially in this location) in no time at all. Waitstaff is always competent and quick.
