Usually it doesn't travel well, and 2, kitchens don't put as much effort into to go meals because it's not as profitable. Well, worry not about that at Thai Shack. My pad woon sen was every bit as good as it would tasted dining indoors. My Thai tea was perfectly sweet and bitter, the way it should be. And my spring rolls still retained the crisp after being packed, even though it's been waiting to be picked up for 15 minutes. I'm very satisfied and will have to make another trip here when in town!

We ordered a super simple meal and every dish had something that made it delicious and delightfully unique. Cute, clean and quaint but we got it to go. We were greeted by a lovely Woman and while it was hoppin with phone and Togo orders, she took the time to connect and thank us. clearly there is attention to detail and love in preparing this food! The crisp of the lightly salted pork belly and chive dumpling showed this is nacho average wannabe Thai grub. The peanut sauce, and tangy lime sauce with the pork... THE GOOD ----------------…read more+ Food was super fresh and delicious! ++++ Roti - Was OK. A bit on the small side, but it was only $5, so you figure that would be the case that it was a small serving. The curry was a bit watery though. ++++ Tropical Mango with White Rice - Solid. Lots of mango slices and 6 pieces of large shrimp. Also, lots of tropical, sweet sauce, which made it delicious. ++++ Pad See Ew with Beef - Fantastic! Came out piping hot and fresh with plenty of beef and veggies. Portion was pretty big too. Personally, one of the best Pad See Ew entrees I've had in NJ still. ++++ Chinese Broccoli with Chicken and White Rice - Excellllllent. The chicken and Chinese broccoli had LOTS of sauce and there were carrots and mushrooms mixed in. The chicken was surprisingly pretty tender for chicken breast. + Employees were very friendly and prompt, always filling our hot teas. + Food came out blazzzingly fast, within minutes of us ordering. + Not a huge restaurant, but still plenty of tables and seats. + Private parking lot to the side. THE NOT SO GOOD ---------------------------- - Nada. MIXED THOUGHTS --------------------------- = Nada. RANDOM OBSERVATIONS -------------------------------------- = Came on a Saturday evening from 5:45-7 and it was quiet at first, but a steady stream of customers came in - mostly families - however, there were still open tables. CONCLUSION -------------------- - Unsurprisingly, the food during our dine-in experience was even better than when we did takeout! Definitely a solid Thai food option in the area!

My friend loves this place and maybe it was an odd night but...would not repeat…read more Spring rolls, so oil logged you could physically squeeze them and oil would pool on the bottom of the container. Crepe? An amalgamation of textures that likely shouldn't exist? Soggy mushy texturally just unappetizing and wet, the bottom of the container had a solid coat of water on it so everything inside was just mushy. Green curry, curry flavor good but that's where it ended for me. The tofu was totally mushy. Lychee juice, I love lychee but this tasted artificial and very watered down. We did door dash so I can't speak on service or ambiance but my friend will have to enjoy this on their own

The massaman curry here is insanely creamy and tasty, with a hearty helping of vegetables. We ordered it with tofu, which came in cubes of the soft, unfried variety. Paired with rice, this was a winning dish. The pad woon sen - a savory glass noodle dish - can also be ordered with one's choice of protein. We liked it well enough with the chicken, and found it to be well-seasoned. Our server brought us some hot chili sauce on the side, and the spice lover in me was only too happy to heap spoonfuls of it over everything. Our interactions with servers were...interesting. One of our servers seemed rather terse and cold, while the other hovered a little more than I would've liked. When he saw me taking out my camera, he reached in to take my fork. He used it and his bare hands to rearrange our appetizers, seemingly for the pictures. It was a raised brow moment for us, as was finding that our coconut shrimp neither tasted remotely close to coconut and that it was still frozen in the middle. We pointed this out to our server, who apologized and took it back. But instead of bringing out a fresh plate, it turned out they'd just refried our original pieces, even the ones we'd half eaten. Much as I'd hate to raise alarms for such a small and homely business, we couldn't help but wonder about whether it was sanitary to recook eaten food in their deep fryer. This restaurant has been described in lots of other reviews as a hole-in-the-wall, which feels true. While it's more spacious on the inside than it seems on the outside, there's a smallness and intimacy to the restaurant. The menu is also fairly short and streamlined to a few categories. There's no dedicated parking lot, but we were able to find free street parking without too much trouble.

But when it comes to Thai food, there's just two, and Khao Thai is one of them. Inside, the space is fairly large but it's kept relatively quiet and intimate with lots of two-tops. Our crispy calamari appetizer was a bit of a letdown. While hot and crispy, they seemed to have been breaded and fried as clumps. Even the accompanying sweet chili sauce couldn't mask that tough, rubbery texture. Entrees fared just a little better. My pad see ew was a little bland but perked up with some chili sauce dribbled over the plate by the spoonful. I chose beef as my protein and while there weren't a ton of beef pieces, the few I had were wonderfully tender. Service was friendly and lovely. Our server (who I also assume is the owner) welcomed us warmly and was quick to check on us. I was endeared by the owner's young daughter who came by to help and made sure all our water glasses stayed filled. I know we're riding the giant inflation wave, but the serving size felt a little paltry for the prices. Even after an appetizer and two entrees, we both had enough stomach space after dinner to fill up with nuggets at a nearby fast food restaurant.

The waitress wasn't rude but she didn't come back after bringing the food. Another person, maybe the manager or owner (and adult whereas the waitress was a teen or very early 20s) came out and never even spoke to or looked toward our table. I guess if I was desperate for Thai and nothing else was available I might try again but I'm not. I don't plan to return. The pad Thai is very one note which is the opposite of what makes Thai food amazing to begin with.

I decided to try this place because of their very reasonably priced lunch specials. The place was…read moreso homey, we felt like we were dining at someone's home. There was a friendly server and the owner/chef also came out. He let us know he's been there for 6 years. I would have tried them sooner, but I'm no longer in my Thai food phase. There was a time when I used to have Thai food about once a week. I was quite impressed with the freshness of the food and what you get for $15. I thought the portions were right there, but if you need more food, an appetizer might be a good addition. We were there around 12:30 and were the only ones there, but people started slowly coming in and by 1:15 most of the tables got filled. One weird thing was that they use disposable cups for water. Perhaps it's a more of a to-go place or not enough man power to wash cups? My friend and I shared the chicken pad khee mao and chicken with spicy basil sauce. Each dish comes with a spring roll, but somehow no dipping sauce! However, if you ask, they have them in little to-go cups. My friend can't handle too much spice so we went with regular spicy, which to me wasn't spicy at all. The vegetables were crunchy and I liked that the noodle still had a good chew and not gummy. Basil sauce was right on the edge of being salty but with rice, it was okay. The food was flavorful, not greasy, and I'm sure would have tasted way better with more heat. The lunch options are pretty basic, but the full menu has a lot more interesting dishes, and based on the taste of the lunch dishes, I plan on trying different dishes in the near future if I'm in the mood for Thai.

I think they were previously in Belleville that's why it's a 973 # (This was the old hot dog place on State Street). We called in a pick-up order. They estimated 30 min was done in 22 min didn't have to wait. There's a public municipal metered Parking across Essex Street or I believe for pick up you can park on side or back of building. Ordered: -Thai Ice Tea (not pictured) -Sm Tom Yum soup w shrimp & mushroom (not pictured) -Thai Dumplings -Shrimp rolls -Spring Rolls -Crispy chicken w/Cashews -Shrimp Fried rice We asked for everything not spicy. The Thai Iced Tea was very good (I kept stretching it by adding lactose free milk & it was perfect it never lost it's flavor) The Crispy Chicken looked like it could have been mushy but it wasn't - it was perfect crisp with perfect sauce adhered and a perfect bite size all fresh vegetables with good crunch not soggy. Both spring roll & shrimp roll were not greasy they were light and flavorful. The shrimp fried was also not greasy and the shrimp in the rice was cooked perfectly not rubbery or overcooked. Dumplings had a nice consistency, nice flavor and were fully stuffed wrapping was light not heavy or too doughy. Did not try the Tom Yum soup w shrimp & mushroom yet but looking forward to it! Definitely going back well try dine in next. NOTE: These things I saw on previous menu seem to no longer be offered. Chicken Satay or Pineapple Fried Rice. But you can ask...

The decor is very simple and cozy so it feels calming and not overstimulating. It's very quiet so it would be a great place to take your time really savoring every bite and have intimate conversations I also loved how you could choose your spiciness level. When I called in to ask "when you say 'spicy,' does that mean white-people 'spicy' or Asian-level 'spicy'?" They humored me by answering honestly and non-offendedly. Their staff was very accommodating and solution oriented by giving me the spices on the side so I could adjust for myself PROS: their spicy garlic chili oil (made in-house), veryyy addictive. If they bottled it, I'd buy packs of it. Their pad kee mao. I am veryyyyyyy picky about my Thai food but this place is in my top 2 NJ spots for pad kee mao. I can't believe I didn't know about it sooner. CONS: you might have to whisper in hushed tones so the table next to you doesn't overhear your conversation if you choose to dine in (but is that really a con? I hate having to shout in restaurants to be heard) I would order out from here all the time and I'd eat in when I want some alone time (peace and quiet to be with my thoughts and enjoy my food) or for a cozy intimate date (whether it's with a guy or some girl friends)
