MaFisa Fish and Chips
Chuck M.

4 Stars For Father's Day, my wife graciously agreed to visit Chulla's Café, an African-inspired restaurant that had been on my must-try list for quite some time. Before relocating to Rocklin, Chulla's earned a reputation as one of the top dining destinations in the Sacramento area, so I was eager to see how it would settle into its new home. We arrived early and were greeted with warm smiles and genuine hospitality. The staff made us feel welcome from the moment we walked through the door. The ambiance was inviting and relaxed, creating the perfect setting for a leisurely Father's Day lunch. As a nice touch, we were offered a sample of their hibiscus tea, which was refreshing, flavorful, and served complimentary. Small gestures like that go a long way in creating a memorable dining experience. Wanting to embrace the culinary adventure, I followed the hostess's recommendation and ordered the Boya Jambalaya Stew. The dish featured a medley of shrimp, cod, catfish, peas, corn, green beans, and coastal spices, served alongside rice and grilled vegetables. While it wasn't a traditional jambalaya, it delivered its own unique flavor profile. The seafood was plentiful, the spices were well-balanced, and it was both hearty and satisfying. My palate thoroughly enjoyed the experience. My wife chose the Mafisa Fish and Chips, which included two pieces of cod served with fries and slaw. It was a solid, well-prepared meal, but in hindsight, she probably should have ventured into one of Chulla's specialty dishes. The unique African-inspired menu is what sets this restaurant apart, and that's where the real food adventure seems to be. Overall, Chulla's Café is absolutely worth a visit. The owners and staff clearly put significant effort into creating a welcoming atmosphere and a distinctive dining experience. As they continue establishing themselves in their new Rocklin location, they deserve support from diners looking to try something beyond the ordinary. If you're willing to step outside your comfort zone and explore new flavors, Chulla's is a great place to start.

Afro Shawarma

Firstly... they had the food displayed on the plate beautifully, I ate some before taking the photos, so did my boyfriend. Very clean inside, music was also nice touch to my lunch. Enjoyed tasty food! What we got! Calamari Afro Shawarma MaFisa Fish and chips Jalapeño poppers to go! Aloko (fried plantains) to go :) All of it was so tasty and FRESH!

Chulla's in Rocklin is open. Famous hibiscus tea so crisp and refreshing ready to go - try it you'll be back. Proprietor's on site and very friendly with good service. Very clean restaurant. Lots of patio with shade and without. Menu is breakfast items, burgers, seafood, chicken strips, stew, wraps, and salad's. We had the fish & chips and craft burger. Very satisfying. Had onion rings too - very crispy.

Hungry lion KING burger! Has 3 patties!

Burger was huge and delicious! Homemade Hibiscus tea is phenomenal! They just recently reopened in Rocklin from their North Highlands location so it was a little quiet during lunch. But service was quick. Definitely can see this place getting busy once more people know about it!

Restaurant Entrance

Chulla's Café recently relocated from North Highlands to The Plaza At Stanford Ranch in Rocklin, CA. They have an extensive online menu offering local and African cuisine that is absolutely fantastic. Chulla's owner, Tomba, is a very pleasant and approachable guy. We had the pleasure of meeting him and several of his family members who also work at the restaurant while we were there. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. Lotsa smiles. We dropped in for lunch on a weekday. My wife had the Breakfast Burrito and I had the Crafter Burger with onion rings. Both were delicious with large portions. We also were treated to the special Hibiscus Tea that is made in house with 7 different spices. Yum. Next time you are in the area, I highly recommend Chulla's Café. They are open from 7am to 10 pm Wednesday thru Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday. Enjoy.

Chulla's Cafe made the #3 spot on Yelp's Top 50 Places to eat in the Sacramento area for 2022! After seeing them on the list and reading some of the reviews I knew I had to try their food. As I walked in I was greeted by multiple people and welcomed with smiles. They asked me if I had been in before and after telling them it was my first time they offered me a sample of their amazing Hibiscus tea. It's unlike anything I've had before, but reminds me of a more refreshing (and complex) apple cider. On their website it's noted that the Hibiscus tea is "brewed in-house and spiced with 12 secret spices that evoke jamaica, or sorrel, drinks enjoyed by the African diaspora - yet it is truly unique to Chulla's." I ended up ordering a big cup of the Hibiscus tea and the Hungry Lion Burger. I knew I was going to have two patties on my burger, but I wasn't ready for how big they would be. The burger was huge and had the two patties, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, onion rings, slices bacon, cheddar and Swiss cheeses. It was seasoned perfectly and cooked the way you prefer (I chose medium rare). It also came with some amazing house made fries. I ended up taking more than half my burger home and they refilled my tea before I left, which I thought was super generous of them! After visiting and meeting the amazing owners and staff and trying the food it's clear why so many Yelpers have rated Chulla's five stars! I also heard they're looking to open two more locations, and one of them will be in downtown. I'm excited to have a spot closer to me to get this delicious food, but I'll definitely be back to this original location again soon.

Chicken shawarma and lion King burger to go
Alyssa Mae C.

Yup, my burger loving husband had to get that hungry lion King as soon as we found out about it. I opted for the other popular chicken shawarma based on reviews. Both were a sight to behold and a dream to devour. Medium doneness is probably enough for the meat patties. The onions were on the stronger side in my opinion. The side sauce was great with the fries or poured right into the entree. Looking forward to coming back for more!

We were in the area so decided to try this out as we had gotten it once when it was on Doordash. It's located in a plaza so no parking issues! There were indoor seating, and the staff were extremely friendly. Tamba was welcoming, engaging, and a funny guy. He gave us samples of the Jamaica drink, which had interesting flavors and was refreshing! So we ordered one and he told us to drink some while we wait for our food, and he'll refill it for us before we leave! Super nice of him! We ordered the Beef Shawarma and Beef Sandwich. Tamba asked if we want spicy sauce and gave us some! The spicy sauce was pretty good! Both entrees were delicious and filling. The food were cheap too! Will definitely return!

Buttermilk Pancakes with a side of eggs and bacon
Arnel E.

Fantastic customer service. That point is what should be emphasized when reviewing this cafe. The three crew members working that morning checked on us often as to how our morning was going so far. Tamba, the owner was pleasantly conversant (socially distanced with his mask on) and encouraged us to return and sample the other Afro-Caribbean entrees available for lunch and dinner. He also explained that the name Chulla's was his grandma's. The missus was craving for pancakes this chilly spring morning so we decided to go to this highly rated gem in the McLellan AFB area among the other brunch choices in this part of Sactown. And what a great choice it was. Hers Buttermilk Pancakes with a side of eggs and bacon. Fluffy and savory combined with the butter and syrup His Chulla's Signature Omelet (egg white option) with avocado slices and roasted potatoes. This entree was enhanced by the sauces and the crispy spuds. Not a fan of potatoes in general but these taters were seasoned perfectly and we gobbled them up. Ours Fresh Hibiscus Tea. Refreshing, crisp and perfect spiciness. After tasting the sample provided by Tamba we decided to get it to-go. Don't forget to try the house hot sauce which will make your meal experience even better. It's quite a drive from us but we're definitely going to return.

I haven't tried this particular salad at Bennett's before and I was pleased. It's a very large portion, you easily could take some home. It came slightly warmed which was very enjoyable. I washed it down with an Arnold Palmer. Very refreshing. Sitting out on the patio was very pleasant as it wasn't too hot outside, and the space is air conditioned in any case. Bennett's service is always friendly and very accommodating and this particular time maintained that special quality. The food had some highs and lows, but those Brussels sprouts were legitimately good enough that we finished the first plate and immediately ordered another Parking? Lot. Perfectly cooked with that elusive balance of crispy edges and tender centers, with enough flavor to make them addictive without burying the sprouts themselves. We finished the first plate and subsequently ordered another Steak Frites (3/5): The flavor was there. The steak was well marinated with plenty of savory depth, but the texture held it back. It was noticeably chewy and never quite delivered that tender bite you want from steak frites. The fries were fine, but thicker and softer than I prefer. Why im giving it 2 stars was the service provided to us, we understand the importance of time, yet we're being treated like "clueless and rushed". Yet everyone else in the establishment were treated well and not rushed. We came at 7:30pm. I rarely get these interactions and frequently explore new restaurants, we were seated and waited about 20 mins until we realized we did not have a server and a new one was given. As we waited we ordered drinks letting us know something had happened to our last server? Not sure we are just customers. I felt rushed, my friends felt rushed after the fact. We were still choosing if we wanted apps or dinner, yet our server kept giving remarks to my friend which was unprofessional with the way there tone of speech no one came to check on us before that. Our drinks we are still sipping on and our friend and I having conversations and a great time we did not allow that to let us feel like our time was short. The server then continued acting ways I thought at first maybe his personality and its just how he is , yet no it continued through the whole night. When ordering dinner he came back and said he will do laps around, we were at that point deciding to leave to another restaurant and get the bill or just stay for dinner. Yet the ambiance is nice and we have a table. We believed we came at a reasonable time. So we stayed and continued our conversations. As he came again we ordered and my friend was ordering her part , the server got highly frustrated she wasn't ready. He even had to take a step back did a spin from our table and then came back in again. We got quiet and just did not know how to respond. So we continued to order. I never had that happen. If someone is deciding maybe giving genuine opinions of whats are great in kitchen 747, first time having dinner at this franchise might as well join in on a conversation without making us feel like we should have not came here? I think where im writing this review is at the end of the night. Zach M gives our bill. I asked if we could split 3 ways if thats an option, he proceeds to slam the bill on the table and says "ur paying". Our friends and I just left it as it is, I was disappointed in the service. We did not once wanted to feel disrespected or disrespect someone. We said our thank you's and left it at that. We thought the connivence of having this restaurant 5 mins from us was a great idea.
