We got the duck croquettes which were very good and the pan con bistec. The sandwich you can share between two people if you don't want to overindulge. They are a pretty big portion. Service is slow... looked like there were 2 waiters and a bunch of servers waiting for the waiters permission to bring over items. Pastelitos were pretty much done by the time we got there. Had the duck croquetas and duck doesn't really belong in a croquetas. The malanga latkes were ok, guava sauce great. Frita patty melt was delish but it felt like they just used the same patty from the Frita burger they could have flatten it more to fit the rye bread size. Disappointing. Ordered a Caesar Salad and a Frita Patty Melt with some fries. The salad had a white long hair in it that was instantly noticeable. The patty melt was underwhelming and overly cooked. I didn't want to bother the staff to switch out my order because not only did it take excessively long to get our order taken, but the waiter would just skip our table completely. The one and only time we were attended to, he stood over us with his notepad out not saying a single word and just waited for us to speak and gave us a sarcastic response in regards to us being ready to order. It was a Saturday afternoon before their martini happy hour had even started, the restaurant was not packed- so I can't really find an excuse for the poor service and food. read more

I must say the food here is delicious but maybe overpriced ,but what can you expect since it's located in the grove. I spent $22 on a pan con bistec when I know I can get that for way cheaper. Went in at 1:10 and the place only had a couple tables occupied. HOWEVER, we were sitting there for 10-15 minutes without being greeted or even looked at. I made eye contact with the server with blonde hair multiple times and tried to flag her over to order food and she completely ignored us. the rest of the staff was hanging out in the kitchen, which is open so we could see them hanging out. If the restaurant is that empty, you should be working to make your money. I've worked as a server before and i'm normally pretty relaxed cause i understand, but this business will fail if it continues. Visited Chug's a few weeks ago and my group liked liked it! Since they're listed on Michelin's "Bib Gourmand" list, I did have high expectations. We went mid-day on a Wed. The staff was nice but needed a few mins to warm up to us. Coffees and cocktails were good. My friend did get a mimosa and there was a lot to desired as they didn't fill here glass up very much. I think they gave her a wine glass instead of a champagne flute. I ordered the "cast iron pancake" and I enjoyed it! It was sweet and gave me cornbread vibes. Located off the Cocowalk strip in Coconut Grove, it's a cute, intimate, and dim lit diner that's a restaurant/diner hybrid. We went during Happy Hour and ordered one of their 99 cent martinis and a cocktail. Nothing great but gets the job done. For starters we ordered the Cast Iron Pancake and the Malanga Latkes. The cast iron pancake was super big, fluffy, and crispy on the edges. Was very filling and very tasty. The malanga latkes were really good and paired well with their guava sauce. For our Entrees we ordered the "Pan con bistec" and the "Pollo Empanizado". I put quotes on it because of its Cuban fusion twist. The "Pan Con Bistec" was not a traditional sandwich by any means. The meat is braised short rib instead of traditional cheap thin steaks used. The meat was so flavorful and tender, and it came with a pan sauce from the drippings of the meat to dip the sandwich in. Simply amazing! The "Pollo Empanizado" also was really flavorful. It came with a tomato spicy jam and dressed up arugula that gave a nice peppery bite to it. Both sandwiches came on a buttered and toasted Cuban roll which was the icing on the cake. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a great meal, perhaps just pastries, or even a quick cafecito! read more

TL;DR - Came here twice, both times experienced absolutely atrocious service... won't be back. I came here a few years ago and it was a poor experience, but vowed I'd give them another shot because maybe they were having an off day. Went back today and I can't believe that it could possibly be worse that what we experienced. I was told there was a 40min wait while observing over 7 open tables and a virtually empty restaurant. Waited and was finally seated - over 30minutes after ordering drinks (and 2 times inquiring where they were at) did our drinks arrive. Food finally came over an hour after ordering. Food was OK - but way overpriced for what you can get the exact same thing elsewhere in Miami for half the price. Skip this place and go literally anywhere else in Coconut Grove. read more

Chug's Diner is a restaurant I had been wanting to try for so long as I have heard great things. I was honestly a little disappointed with the overall experience. All of the waiters were very nice and accommodating but we had probably 4 different servers throughout our meal. The lechon hash was by far the best breakfast item we had I 100% would come back for that dish it was flavorful, tender, with soft and crispy potatoes underneath. I had La Completa with smoked salmon and was underwhelmed but it was only eggs, potatoes, and Cuban bread with smoked salmon so maybe that's why. I liked the traditional diner ambiance and there are so many menu items that look good so I would definitely come back. read more

The coffee was lukewarm and nothing out of this world. We ordered the malanga latkes to start and honestly could not go past just trying a bite. I tried the croqueta preparada and being from Miami, I just feel like there are plenty of other options with better flavor, quality, and price point. Lastly, the service. I really love this place...I really do. There are days when all I think about is that delicious skillet pancake! And let's not forget the short rib croquetas (please bring them back!), and the most amazing wedge salad I've ever encountered (that bacon). But what kills this place is their service and inconsistency. Every time I've come here I've had an experience that has made this five star location a 3-star place. Last time, I waited nearly 10 minutes at the front when finally a waitress came to me and said she was the only server and we'd have to wait. Finally, 20 minutes later I got a seat at a row of tables that had been open the whole time. Like, if you were going to sit me there initially, then why make me stand for nearly 30 minutes? When it was time to take our order they were out of burgers. Burgers? How do you run out of burgers? This isn't my only negative experience here. The first time I ever came here I got chastised by the host because I sat at a table, without knowing that we had to wait to be seated...because there was no one at the host station to seat me. I've also had other times they were out of certain items. Listen...I come here for the food because it's top notch, but Chugs, please get it together with your service. Chugs was first stop for breakfast in Miami after getting in late the night before. It features a nod from the Michelin guide. Needed to get some quintessential Miami flavor first so had to have cafecito and croquettas and they delivered! The orange mustard sauce with the croquettas was amazing. I ordered 2 cafecitos, the first came out a little cold but the second was perfection. The breakfast sandwich checked all the boxes, fluffy bread, cheesy, the Taylor ham was juicy and salty and the crunchy papitas tied it all together. I've heard a lot about Chugs and This morning I happened to pass by,m- I was drawn by the crowd to be honest and coffee craving! There was a bit of a line at the 'ventanita' but no big deal, i ordered a cortadito and a frita pastelito. Cortadito was super strong (yassss!!!) and the pastelito was spicy (double yasss!!). I had my puppy with me and the staff kindly provided a cup of water for puppy Fiona, we sat outside, and mingled with other patrons who had four legged furries with them. I'm a big fan of Chug's, pandemic or not! The Grove was long in need of a spot like this and I love to see it doing so well. While I initially came nearly a year ago for brunch, I've since popped in numerous times for a coffee and snack while in the area. From French toast sticks to fritas, you really can't go wrong. The croquetas and pastelitos are solid and definitely not your abuela's flavors (keep an eye on their social media for regular specials!). Sweets person? I recently tried the chocolate chip cookie and could definitely make an argument for it being the best in Miami. Unfortunately, you can't sit and enjoy your meal inside the cute interior or spacious exterior at this moment, but they're still in business! Besides being open to grab a coffee and snack to-go, they've also set up a bodega with fresh veggies, beans, local beer and more! Definitely welcomed during this crazy time when finding groceries can be a headache. A retro looking diner with a Cuban flare is the best way to describe Chug's. Prior to going I of course checked out the menu and everything sounded great. I had already planned my whole meal and could not wait to sit and order. We sit down and are handed the menus, I look and not one thing I had wanted was on the menu. Apparently I was looking at the lunch menu online and not the dinner. To be honest I was disappointed because the lunch menu sounded way more intriguing to me. So with this I changed up my order. Everything was delicious! The frita sort of reminded me of a twist on a New York chopped cheese and the pierogies were probably my favorite menu item that I tried. I also ordered a ton of different desserts to go and started to eat them on the car ride home. Amazing! Would go back Just for dessert alone. I'll be back soon to try the lunch menu. read more

Slightly below average food, with fine dining prices. $6+ for two dry croquetas, $19+ for a floppy Cuban sandwich on sloppy toast. Menu did not mention it wasn't on Cuban bread. They were incapable of making a pan con bistec. Natural orange juice was overripe. The greasy fries could pass for below average. Appears the Michelin arbiters got greased on this one. There is better Cuban food in a laundromat right down the street. Will not be returning unless their food begins to reflect a Bib Gourmand. Michelin has dropped the ball in some of its Miami selections and this is an appropriate example. Pay $15 for three eggs and toast elsewhere. read more

I have been wanting to get to Chug's since they opened. I have heard such awesome things about them! Today was the day... we had three great meals! Our favorite was the masitas on fufu. The flavor of the pork belly was like nothing I have never tasted and the fufu was super creamy and flavorful. They were just perfectly made. Our other two dishes were the lechón hash and lechón, with rice and beans. We really enjoyed it all. Can't wait to get back there and eat in that gorgeous outside garden seating. read more

Time for another Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand 2022 winner. Chug's Diner in Miami's Coconut Grove. There have been 3 versions of Chug's although this one is technically called 2.0. Mike Beltran and his team opened Chug's in 2019, in what was supposed to be a small pop-up ventanita serving coffee and Pastelito Papi's delicious creations. Then Mike added just 24 menu items, and the pop up went 18 months, and the little restaurant that could was pumping out hundreds of breakfast sandwiches, and pancakes and more. Then Covid hit and temporarily became a bodega, and "outside only" window. Fast forward to 2022, the team shut down, bought out the old clothing store next door, and rebuilt Chug's a the incredible Cuban American diner that it is today. Now with a lush outdoor patio as well. Great pastelitos, breakfast sandwiches and plates, awesome lunch items including the pork belly, and Chug burger, and dinner items like Medianoche pierogies and a meatloaf. Oh and they have a few items on the "all day breakfast menu". My photos are from my visit today and a few previous visits. The breakfast sandwich is a take on the NJ Pork roll, gooey fried egg, Taylor ham, American cheese, dukes mayo, and Yucca papitas, stupidly good. Beltran's bacon is knife and fork thick with sazón crumble, smoked maple, and a lime wedge that you need to squeeze over it, delicious. The cast iron pancake with syrup on the bottom will change the way you think of pancakes. The Masitas is game changing good, pork belly fufu de platano, mojo onions. Don't forget about Pastelito Papi's rotating selection of goodness. Today was, mac n cheese, frita, and separately guava and mango with queso. Finally pastry Chef Devin Braddock with incredible selections to choose from, the BK pie, think Hershey's pie from Burger King but better. read more

Decided to finally cross out Chug's from my bucket list since I was in the area and now I can't wait to be back. I visited on a weekday in the evening which seemed to be perfect. The restaurant wasn't empty but it wasn't packed. Loved the music and ambience as a whole. The service was also great, felt a bit homey even. Since it was my first time I wanted to try the burger as it's the talk of the city for being one of the best burgers. At first sight I was a bit disappointed. The looks are subtle but the taste is there trust me. Nothing will stand out in regard to the taste but it's definitely a less is more circumstance. I finally can attest to the Chug Burger being one of the best in South Florida. For dessert I had the strawberry tres leche which was good. Chugs is an elevated Cuban diner (with elevated pricing as well). I enjoyed the quiche and especially the spectacular salad it came with. The croquettas were very solid & traditional in texture & taste, nothing too inventive or crazy. The pastelitos were also solid. My cafe con leche was weak, I'm sorry to report. Simply not enough espresso flavor came through & it tasted like warm milk. All in all there's definitely something interesting happening here but I wish the menu took more chances given the elevated pricing & gourmet spin. read more
