I've been to Zitz Sum twice, and both times have been amazing. I like that they're always changing their menu because each time felt like a different experience. We started off with the bing bread which comes with a delicious butter with furikake. We also ordered the steak tartare. It was topped with carrots and I believe had some type of oats/granola inside. It all meshed together so well. For our main we ordered both the wontons and dumplings. We also ordered the cod fish which was one of my favorite dishes of the night. I'm not a fish lover, and this has convinced me to try more fish dishes. For dessert, we ordered the French toast. I wish this dish was bigger because it's so good and I don't want to share! I remember coming to Zitz Sum when it was a pop up in this Gables space, and having it be a permanent location is a joy. Would highly suggest going in as tapas style and sharing with the table. We started with a bread and fruitcake butter, and wow what a stunning combination to start the night. We also had a hibachi with some dragon, fruit, seeds, and citrus, and what a bright vibrant bite ( say that three times fast). The dumplings were tender and cooked well with a salty umami broth that just added an extra layer of complexity to the bite. Every dish that came out was presented in a stunning manner with a layered flavor profile, and made every bite more exciting than the last. After coming here a few times I have to say that this week was probably the most disappointing of all others. As soon as we walked in you could feel like the extraction system in the kitchen was not working properly. The restaurant had lots of smoke in the dining room area and at the end we left smelling like the kitchen. After seating, we were greeted nicely and our waiter was super friendly and attentive. They brought us our seasonal menu and July to me, has been the weakest of our visits here. We had wonton in brodo, scallops crudo, a rice dish and the snapper. The wonton was a bit tough, not very delicate, and the brodo... hardly any. The scallops crudo were very nice and super flavorful. (Probably the one good dish we had). The rice as it was called was more of a corn and bean dish than rice... also it had something that was rather sour to taste, that simply didn't work with that dish. The snapper was okay tasty dish but nothing memorable. My POV is, when I come to these restaurants that have may have a Michelin recommendation or have that hype ... my expectation is to leave with at least one or two dishes that I would say, "I would come back just to have that again". Zitz Sum is the sister restaurant to Dojo Izakaya. Having just tried Dojo, we wanted to try this spot immediately. The service makes you feel at home. Our server was great. The menu frequently changes, so the items we had will likely be gone soon, but definitely get the bing bread, which seems to be a permanent fixture on the menu. This is sort of tapas sharing place so we ordered a bunch, I recommend 4-5 dishes for 2 people. Came to Zitz Sum for the first time with friends two weeks ago. Their menu is currently focused on spring, and it was so good that I had to come back with my husband for date night. At this point, I've pretty much tried the whole menu--and I can confidently say there's nothing I didn't like. Of course, there are a few standouts you must try: the Bing Bread, Wonton in Brodo, Steak Tartare, the Bass, and that Carolina Gold Rice (it's unreal). Every dish is beautifully balanced--flavorful, creative, and just really well-executed. They also offer a tasting menu with a wine pairing option, which is such a nice touch if you want the full experience. We opted for à la carte this time, but I'm already planning to come back just to do the tasting menu. It's a great way to explore their seasonal concept and try dishes you might not have ordered otherwise--especially when paired with curated wines or sake. Speaking of drinks, their beverage program is super creative. They don't have a full bar (just wine and sake), but the cocktails they craft from that are really impressive. Thoughtful, fresh, and perfectly paired with the food. Service was outstanding. We ordered a bottle of wine, and I don't think our glasses went more than two minutes without being topped off. I used to frequent No Name Chinese and since Zitz Sum opening, It's been on my list to check out. My friend loves it here so she took the liberty of ordering. It's a small menu so you're pretty much going to order about the whole menu. Everything is meant for sharing and tasting. Bites are like Flavor explosions in your mouth. my favorite dishes of the night were the steak tartar and potato dumplings with truffle. Packed with flavor. My friend mentioned that dishes change often and the menu did have the date for the current month. I saw some things posted in the pics that they no longer offer. I will warn that even in sharing dishes are small. I feel like this restaurant is really meant for a tasting experience. I knocked off a star because they don't really have cocktails only like sake tinis and wine. And they were served in small coupe glasses. Two gulps and it was finished pretty much. And it wasn't that good, imo. Maybe go with the wine better. But if you haven't been here it's definitely one to check off the list and try. If you dine in Miami, you know the difficulties there are when deciding on a place to eat. The many (many) options to choose from. Is it actually good, or is it just overhyped? Are the plates Instagram worthy, but not tastebud worthy? However, once you sift through these questions and the array of restaurants you can reserve a table at, you'll start to find the gems. The places that do good food, good service, and good vibes. Zitz Sum is one of those places. Not surprising of course, given their bib gourmand status. But it's another thing to actually try the plates that earned this recognition, which you totally should. To start things off, the ambience in the place was great and our waiter was fantastic. He was super knowledgeable about the menu, filled us in on what dishes are new/seasonal (check out my pic of the menu) and which are mainstays, and gave us his recommendations. Lucky for us, nearly everything we were thinking about ordering was similar to the plates he was ready to suggest. We got the bing bread, steak tartar, wahoo crudo, wonton in brodo, and charred cabbage. The bing bread was served hot and soft and the sweet Florida honey butter it came with was divine. The steak tartar was my favorite dish of the night and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. The beef was tender and seasoned well, and the ramen egg it sat in was perfectly chewy and salty. This is a steak tartar like you've never had before. The wahoo crudo was unique and I was hesitant at first about the thin banana slice its topped with (I'm not a fan of bananas), but I trusted the process and chef and all the flavors really came together and paired well with each other. The wonton in brodo was my second favorite dish of the night. The broth was flavorful and cozy, I was literally sipping it after all the wontons were eaten. And the wontons itself? Soft and packed with tasty chicken. Finally, the charred cabbage. Don't sleep on this dish! It was more fulfilling and flavorful than you ever thought a cabbage could be, and the char on it gave it a nice punch of heat. At the end of our meal, we talked other Miami spots with our waiter, exchanged restaurant recommendations, and learned about Zitz Sums' sister izakaya restaurant (called Dojo, which we will definitely be trying). Fantastic speakeasy of a find that is well worth it's Michelin bib gourmand award. Headed by Chef Pablo Zitzmann, his previously experience working for Nobu and the wonderful Asian dimsum fusion restaurant of No Name Chinese, Zitz Sum has some of the most unique elevated Japanese and Chinese fusion dishes I've tasted! There were so many great options on the menu when I went in August (menu seems to change every month and season) that I was so grateful there was a tasting menu option for $85 which definitely filled me up. The restaurant itself is tucked away in a business building so don't be afraid to just enter the lobby and the front desk will direct you accordingly. I was able to grab a reservation on a Saturday evening without too much difficult and was sat quickly. My waiter was very attentive, explained the different choices on the tasting menu, offered his recommendations for cocktails (I got the matcha ginger cocktail, which was so unique I highly recommend!), and checked in on me frequently throughout the tasting menu. As the tasting menu likely changes per season, I'll highlight some of my favorites. The oysters had such a unique savory profile and the Serrano pepper kick was strong! The arepas with basically unagi on top was a work of art; perfect fusion of cultures and the texture seeminglessly blends between the cheese filled corn arepas and the smoothness of the eel. I loved the chicken wontons in brodo shoyu broth, the savory broth was so nostalgic to eating soup wontons as a kid. The grouper was somewhat bland, but the koshihihikari rice was next level. I asked my waiter and the chef describes the dish almost like a tiger rice with pumpkin seeds and a squash puree that holds the whole dish together; it reminded me of a thick savory congee, such a unique and delicious combination. Sending with the French toast was extraordinary, freshly fried outer layer with the expected soft pillowy inside you'd expect of japanese bread paired perfectly with a scoop of vanilla gelato on top of crispy peanut butter flakes. Delightfully unassuming. This restaurant is tucked away inside of a financial building. You would never guess it's there. It ties together variety of culinary delights from around the globe. this was a great date night out. We did the tasting menu. The food is definitely five stars. I took away one star because when they asked if there were any dietary restrictions, I let them know. I could not have spice or anything acidic at the time and this was not taken into consideration after I was reassured that certain dishes would not be too spicy or acidic. Unfortunately there were a few that I was unable to eat completely so my husband had these. The server noticed I was not able to eat it and offered to bring something else, but at that point I had lost my trust and did not want to risk it a little frustrating when spending so much on a tasting menu however it did not take away from the fact that the food itself was well executed. A definite must try and the appetizers were the star of the show. Starting with a potato dumplings, which were my absolute favorite because they reminded me of gnocchi and we're in a sauce that was delicious and topped with truffle. The wontons were also really good and perfect for anyone that likes pork. One of the more popular appetizers was the Bing bread, which is perfect if you want something late to start the meal. Now the cucumber salad was controversial, because not everyone at my table liked cucumber, but the mix of avocado with the other vegetables made it a surprising crowd favorite. As for the entrée, we shared the rice and snapper and I definitely recommend getting more rice and perhaps an additional entree if you're sharing and your group is bigger than three. Visited Zitz Sum in Coral Gables. The tucked-away location offered a cozy, moody setting--ideal for a romantic evening. I was so excited to try it because i had heard so many great things about the menu, and read that it was one of the top 50 restaurants in the US. However, the disappointment began with the limited drink selection, only featuring wine and sake-based cocktails. The small menu was further underwhelming, with several desired items unavailable. The culinary experience included the TARTARE, CRUDO, and SHRIMP & LOBSTER HAR GOW, all of which were good but failed to impress. The standout was the BAO with Niman Ranch short rib & habanada sofrito. The WONTON IN BRODO had a flavorful broth, and the KINOKO HOT POT was satisfactory. The CAVATELLI, though decent, lacked the wow factor. Felt like everything was missing either salt or citrus. I had desert but I can't recall anything about it other than that it was very thanksgiving-ish and not my thing. The service was ok as well. But again, nothing extraordinary. One redeeming factor was a cocktail whose name i can't recall but resembled a spicy smoked old fashioned. It is hard to say enough about this gem of a restaurant. We made a recent visit, our fourth I think, and for the first time indulged in the tasting menu. What an astonishing culinary evening it was. We started with the restaurant's unique cocktails then made our way through nine and more May offerings, each one something that had someone at the table saying "I've never had anything like this," or "now that was a surprise." I'm not exaggerating to say that every bite was exquisite. I'm sparing detailed descriptions of the dishes, as the chef changes things up constantly depending on what's best to buy in local produce and protein. I will say, if the Hokkaido Scallop Crudo is on the menu when you go, do not pass it by. Enhancing everything about the evening is the skilled, knowledgeable and cordial wait staff, especially our waiter, Gab. As I said, the menu is--while not "challenging" exactly--complex and utterly unique. Gab guided us through each course with clear explanations of the ingredients, preparation and intent of each dish that seriously enhanced our enjoyment. Absolutely topnotch, professional table service that is awfully hard to find in Miami, even in fine dining restaurants. Zitz Sum's quirky location (it's tucked into a space off the corner of a bank lobby) means you'll have to put in some effort to find the place the first time you go. I was curious. Could a place that makes the Top 50 restaurants in us by the New York Times live up to the expectations? Thankfully yes. In so many ways. We went for the Chefs Tasting menu in which the kitchen picks dishes off the menu for you. There were so many of them! I think we had over a dozen for our group of 3. Some were small like the savory Japanese custard as a tease. Others were more substantial like the ranch rib eye. Hard to pick favorites but the bao and dumpling course was my favorite. The dumplings had a hot and spicy kick to them but were full of the salty shrimp flavor. The bao was so interesting with herb chutney and labneh; they were filled with lamb shank. So good. The Hong Kong French toast for dessert was a special treat but the semifroyo was a surprise too. We left full and happy. We sat outside in the courtyard and enjoyed the warm spring evening. It's a little bare bones compared with interior but also a bit quieter too. Service was terrific. Our server and the accompanying staff were friendly and helpful and always on top of things. Pretty great meal! I went last night with some coworkers and we ordered most of the menu so I got a pretty well rounded taste of what Zitz Sum offers. My favorite dish of the night was probably the pancake you cannot come here without trying this. The sesame dip offered on the side is phenomenal. Another favorite was the bao. If you eat beef do not skip it. Tender and comforting to is was definitely a group favorite. We ordered the hot pot and steak for entrees which were also phenomenal. For desert we had the chai tea pudding which was good but not anyone's favorite. On a different note the ambiance was very nice. Perfect for a date night as it's dim lit with candles. Hot off a Michelin Bib Gourmand award so had high expectations for Zitz Sum and for the most part, it delivered with small plates of big, bold flavors. Zitz Sum seems to have e some staples but the menu is constantly evolving. Do not expect to see the same items on the menu day in and day out. The menu is on the smaller side with four sections: Izakaya, Dumplings, Konro Grill, and Dessert. The menu is small enough that we were able to order every dish from the first two sections, two from the third, and one dessert. Most of the items were excellent. My absolute favorite was the Hamachi Crudo. The juxtaposition of flavors was powerful. I also loved the Summer Salad and Wagyu Tartare. The Karaage was good but nothing special. I have had Karaaage that was just as good or better elsewhere. From the Dumpling section, the Har Gow was my favorite. The dish did have a bit of a kick. Also enjoyed the Brisket Bun. I thought the Wonton in Brodo, a staple on the menu, was kind of bland. We only ordered two dishes from the Grill section. I was not a fan of the Pork Belly. Although I do not often eat steak, the Wagyu Churrasco was exceptional. The menu changes often, so don't have your heart set on any dishes you see or read about. Just be ready for bright,, new interpretations of dishes you might already be familiar with. There is now an omakase available. Service was approachable and friendly (even for such a restaurant with so much buzz). Since my visit in June , Zitz Sum has been listed as one of NY Times top 50 restaurants (one of only two in Miami on the list). Great meal at Zitz Sum in Coral Gables. A hidden 30 seater inside an office building. They describe their food as "Japanese food looked through the lens of Italian ingredients and technique." I describe it as delicious. We opted for the tasting menu at $125pp but keep in mind, all but a few of these dishes are available a la carte as well. Our favorite items: The bing bread with the miso & sesame honey butter was a great way to begin. The waygu beef tartare in a cone was an excellent one biter. (it's served differently a la carte) We enjoyed the wahoo crudo with its clean and fresh sake broth and citrus flavor. We loved their signature chicken & black truffle wonton in their parmesan & matsutake shoyu broth. This tasted excellent. Firm wontons, flavorful broth. We added the rice hotpot with herbs, ikura, & an egg, was a great addition, although there was already plenty of food in the existing tasting menu. The caraflex cabbage was a sleeper dish. I wish I had more! Charred perfectly, excellent spicy sauce and topped with a great cheese for an excellent flavorful bite. See Ma, I do eat my veggies! Waygu was excellent, a perfect medium rare. The shrimp and lobster har gow was a miss for some of the people at our table, as was the Cavatelli with the XO sauce. This restaurant has sake, wine & beer, no liquor, they also have a few sake based cocktails I had the "Freak On A Leash" it was excellent with a kick from Fresno chilis. One of my companions had a beer he enjoyed, another went for the wine pairing with the tasting menu $45. For the tasting menu there was also a cold sake paring which I selected. It was okay, but served in wine glasses vs the low ball sake glasses. While I understand inspiration and flavors are from both Japanese and Italian cuisine, I would have preferred the sake glass. I think it would have kept the temperature better. We finished the meal with a trifecta of desserts Our group raved about the sorbet, I Ioved the Hong Kong Style French toast with its delicious peanut butter sauce and milk iced tea gelato. This place is absolutely amazing. The food was not only delicious but such a gorgeous presentation. You can tell the chefs took their time with every dish from start to finish. I absolutely loved it. There are a lot of options to choose from so come ready to share and take yourself on a culinary journey. The staff was also great. A special shout out to Krystal and Maynor. When the staff has a great vibe it makes me feel great and excited. The space is very lovely. I've never been to this part of town so it was nice to explore during the day. Very spacious courtyard as well which is where I ate. I think because of the buildings and shadows it was very cool and enjoyable to eat outside despite Miami heat. Excited to go back again!
