I was so absolutely disappointed in the food that I ordered. For reference, I ordered from grub hub because I saw it was available and I saw ads on Facebook previously so I wanted to try it out. I order some wagyu, lamb, and pork belly skewers, in addition to the wagyu fried rice, 2 piece wings, and pumpkin pie bites. Order came out to about 70 dollars with a 10 dollar credit applied. Now for expectations, I understand inflation and I wasn't expecting a lot of value. I was expecting some good tender meats. When I picked up my order from my door, the first thing I noticed was how light the bag was. It was shocking to me especially since they used a pretty high quality takeout bag. Im hungry none the less, so I open up the bag and get to the container that is housing the skewers. What I'm met with is chickelets on a stick. The amount of meat on the sticks was so small. Well the damage was done, hopefully it tastes delicious..... Nope it was so dry and tough. There is no way this was "wagyu". The pork or lamb was the same quality. The wings were good but was 2 pieces per order at almost $5. The wagyu rice was also good but I paid $15 for a bowl so definitely not worth it. Honestly I hate writing this type of review and I try to be understanding but when I get such bad value and bad quality food, there is no excuse. Disclaimer: I spent over $100.00.that night here at Chubby Skewers Mesa Arizona, I have time stamps of me in Phoenix! Despite me being from California. I've been to Chubby Group's MaMaXita in Temple City California and gave Excellent reviews to that sub-brand. Previous review got rescinded by Yelp Mods because I was being Trucker Blunt...blue collar blunt, straightforward with my criticism. So here I'm going to be nice about everything and focus on the restaurant w/ minor calling out of rude behavior from other guests. I had two mandarin speaking chubby skewers Mesa Arizona customers, (mind you Yelp Mods, they were not speaking the Taiwanese Mandarin Accent I'm familiar with), cut in front of me 15 minutes after I was the only one waiting at the front of the house with no attention given to me, no queue, no eye contact from any of the staff members. The restaurant did not do me right.....they went ahead and quickly cleaned up a table and seated the two whilst ghosting me.... When I regained conscience at the disbelief and waived for the staff members attention...they finally cleaned out a table for me 5 minutes later and left me to figure out what the heck is going on in the restaurant. There was a complicated QR menu, no instructions whatsoever, no staff member decided to explain how the skewers menu worked...just a Pandoras Box....figure it out yourself, DIY. Mind you again...I tipped these guys out over 15%, on a $100.00 meal. I had no water, I put in an order into the self POS system and just tapped whatever I could get my hands on in the app menu...still skewers.... And that's when I got up, went to the hallway where a line of fridges lined up....I saw some trays, grabbed one and started blindly grabbing random skewers. Labeling was chaotic, quite frankly none of the labels really adequately explained in detail what the meats were, they didn't look too fresh (the supposedly Wagyu skewers looked very mediocre), and just simply I have to say, Alot of the Malatang places have much cleaner better layouts than how everything was stacked here. So for fridge layout score: 1/5 For staff professionalism: 1/5 For Ambiance: 3/5 neighboring table of customers were loud and rowdy, but I'm guessing the staff doesn't care much of the overall experience that encompasses all customers. Now to the water situation... apparently water was self serve....no cold water vases that staff members in other restaurants would place on each individual table ....just cups and you go get water from some lukewarm water tank......... There was no condiment sauce bar, you know....a place like chubby skewers should at least have a condiment bar with chopped garlic, green onions, dark vinegar, soy sauce, sugar, msg...all that shenanigans....nothing...... Just red flake seasoning, cumin powder seasoning that tasted very chemicallish.... Not even sure they actually went to real spice herbs wholesale distributors to get these seasonings. No bueno. Now to critique the food: The dumplings....were really dry, nothing to dip the dumplings in...I don't even think they booked them, felt like they were pre-steamed, quickly reheated and served. The fried chicken wings...absolutely horrendous, it was like McDonalds chicken nugget stuffing and tasted nothing like how quality fried wings should taste like....Alot of batter...too much batter it tasted like Turkey stuffing....very No bueno, I didn't finish the wings. The bamboo tray clam fish garlic dish had too much of a fish taste to it. I tried downing the second one and did not finish or pack the third to go. The overall skewer experience: maybe due to everything being under seasoned, and them not providing adequate sauce and condiment bars....onion red sweet soy sauces or pickled raddish soy sauces.....I have to give the skewer experience a 3/5. I think you are better off going to Cow Korean BBQ in El Monte California, pay $40.00 and have peak ROI (return on investment) on your meal. The only Pros: was the mango shaved ice...that was it. That was the only highlight...there wasnt any service. No follow ups, no feedback loops, how this location has over 4 stars is beyond my understanding. Im usually the type of customer, you do me right, the food is passable, heck I don't like giving anything under two stars. So to the Yelp Mods who took down my previous review, I urge you to use AI, filter through THIS review and find that I was sincerely disappointed with this Chubby Skewers Mesa Arizona Location, and that you guys keep this review for public reference, so the management team at Chubby Skewers can do better! read more

Fun atmosphere and we arrived earlier than the crowd. The selection of meat is decent. It doesn't compare to seafood selection in Japan of course, and wagyu is meh. White Rice is surprisingly good and Wagyu rice pretty good. When you sit down use app and order items, appetizers, fried rice etc., Some not available yesterday evening. You're free to walk to refrigerator and grab items for grilling, place skewers in bucket. At end of meal wait staff counts and charges, along with items ordered through app, you cannot cash out of app. They'll ask for a tip. Which no one ever brought back a soda refill. Tip we left was ridiculously generous for a few items dropped to table and we had to return to hostess to ask how to start, even though we established when she seated us. She said, "oh you haven't been here?" I thought we established that, but no. She left us at table. I've traveled overseas and frequented BBQ, every restaurant has its own preference. Let the people know! If you're too busy, signage to welcome your guests goes a long way. Here's an idea: print a HOW TO and welcome them. Tell them your story. Tell them steps and how to navigate. Writing is a wonderful way to communicate and each table could be graced with this simple production. Now for the meats. I just wasn't impressed. Though I have my own Korean BBQ at home and just traveled to Japan where Wagyu is phenomenal. And the crawfish was awful. This is a fun place for a few friends. Super unique experience but we were very unsure how it all went. The hostess gave us a super quick and vague run down on how everything worked.. She directed us towards the refrigerators and then took us to our table. We then picked out the skewers we wanted and sat down. By this time, our charcoal had been dropped off and we scanned the QR code to see what else we could order. We ordered a side of white rice, potstickers, cucumber salad, and corn cheese. The cucumber salad was delicious and a must. It went will with the meats and helped with giving it flavor and for it to not be dry. The corn cheese was not good as it was very mushy. We ended up eating 39 skewers and our grand total for a party of 3 was about $90. The experience was fun and unique. Chubby Skewers is a fun place to go with your friends and out of towners! This is perfect place for chatting and hanging out. More of an interactive experience and cooking foods together. It's generally kid friendly as long as your kids don't like to reach and touch hot things. I generally enjoy getting the chicken parts and the beef that's less fatty. The brisket for me is a bit too fatty but that's not their fault. It's just the cut. The staff is always nice to us and very friendly. Pro tip is to ask for the skewer tool since it helps a lot with getting the meat off the skewer. If they see you struggling, sometimes they will bring to you. I think it's very important what time you go if you don't want to run into a crowd and a long wait. I don't recommend going on weekends around 6. Seems really busy and long wait since the place is generally cook your own food. Do the math but the membership can be worth it! read more

Service was horrible. They were busy and the servers were overwhelmed but I am confused on why because they don't take orders or anything all they do is bring out the grill thing. You even have to get your own water. The girl didn't explain anything to us on how we were supposed to do anything so we sat there like uhhhhh so what are we supposed to do!? We scanned the QR code and ordered rice and we had already grabbed meat not knowing why really to do but still no rice. This place was so fun! Flew in late and saw that this place was open so my friends and I decided to try it. You get a big variety of meats and seafood to choose from. The servers were very informative, being this was our first time at a skewer place. The restaurant looked very similar like other bbq places. The only down part is that it's ala carte and not AYCE. The price racked up fast depending on what you ate and the portion of each skewers wasn't that big. The food itself was good, you cook it yourself on charcoal and it's more for the experience. Really making this Chubby Club membership worth it and trying things when out of state. Happened to be in the Mesa area and decided to try Chubby Skewers. A little crazy with reservations since it was Valentine's day, but they are open until 2AM. They have a menu for cooked items like the wagyu beef rice bowl, fried shrimp balls, and the cucumber salad (so good!). Fun and interactive concept grilling your own skewers. They charge for the charcoal and per person to use the seasonings. You also have to order your rice separately. Self serve skewer stations. So many options to choose from but our favorites were the pork and the variety of beef / wagyu skewers. Some meats have 2 skewers - double the price. They have a cheat sheet for how long to cook each specific meat. Overall a fun dining experience. Can't really comment on service too much since this was a DIY restaurant. They didn't really have to do anything or check-in on us since we're doing everything ourselves. Lol. I would love some sort of sauce to dip the meats in since the dusting of dry seasonings just tasted flat. All the skewers go in a metal canister and when you're done, the staff counts it infront of you. Between 4 adults, we did about 70 skewers. Stop by to try this chinese bbq place. We choose and pick the skewers in the fridge area our self then bring them to our table to grill (there is an instruction on the table for how long we need to grill them) once it done, we can add some spices that is provided on the table, but the skewers it self are already marinated and tasty even without additional spices. For me, since I like spicy, I add some chilli, cumin & dry spices. Its a new experience for the kids, they really enjoy to choose, grill then eat them. It was really fun and most importantly is that the food is delicious!!! Be cautious, you might be addicted and won't be able to stop eating ^_^. read more

We've gone to Chubby Skewers three times now and it's better now than it was during their first few months of opening. First visit: The options were lackluster, the service sucked and we left not wanting to come back. We hated everything on their menu except their skewers. We especially hated the stir fried noodles or the scallops in garlic sauce. Everything was so salty and inedible. Second time: good, better variety and service was a little better. We had no complaints but nothing wowed us. Third time: WAY better than previous visits. Service was fast and friendly. Good options on their menu now. Fried rice is insanely delicious, I was surprised and expected it to be average. Cucumber salad is always good. Malatang was full of ingredients and soo numbing. We ordered the Chinese pancake wraps but they dropped off tortillas... which we didn't understand. $6 for tortillas. If we wanted tortillas, we would have asked for tortillas. They should have let us know they were out of the wraps instead of dropping off tortillas so we don't order them lol. Skewers are still good and they have better variety now. Our first time here and it didn't disappoint! We came on a Saturday right at opening and there were already 4 groups AHEAD of us, with none of them as first timers. That was a good sign. Saw this place mentioned on social media so I gathered a group of friends and we checked it out for dinner. The restaurant is a cook your own skewer at your table type of place. Setup is simple: they bring a charcoal cooking box to your table, you select as many or as few skewers you want from the coolers, cook them to your liking, and they charge you per skewer at the end. The options are many and varied. We had shrimp, scallops, bacon wrapped enoki mushrooms, lamb, teriyaki chicken, brisket, pineapple, bell peppers, wagyu, Toast, even roasted a spike of garlic. This place has a very interesting concept with a twist on Korean bbq with grilling your own meat. There is a metal hot box they set on your table filled with coals which you can set metal skewers of meat on top to cook. You walk over to the large refrigerators with about 8 doors and there are trays of meat, seafood, and a few veggies. I thought this was fun but the skewers of meat were about only 2" long at most. The restaurant charges you for everything, the coals, the spices mixes that you add to your skewers. I'm not sure why they don't include this in the price of the experience. There were other food items that you can order via a QR code on the table which we only ordered rice. The booths were very tight. So much so that you can't put your legs under the booth. This place is ok. I wanted to try it, since it's quite unique compared to the other places around. I forgot to take photos :/ the concept is, it's $1.10/skewer stick. The amount of meat on the skewer stick is bare minimum, even veggies, 3 broccoli trees for $1.10.. and not even full trees. I ordered white rice with my food. I was hoping they had some sort of sauces, but they have 0 sauce. No soy sauce, no chili sauce, no wet sauces. The only way to get a wet sauce is to order an entree that has it. This made eating the meats more of a challenge. I also ordered a coconut drink, and it was a tiny box. You get little cups for water, but you have to get up and go to the area with the skewers for more water. That or fill up countless cups. The constant having to get up for water is quite inconvenient. There's pretty much no service, it's all self service. Unless you want an entree or special drink, then you scan the QR code and order it, and it's brought out to you. I was not impressed with this place. I'd come back ONLY if they brought waters to the tables and added sauces. But it was a good experience to try at least once! read more

So the concept is cool. The $1 something per skewer will def grab anyone's attention. However when you get there There's an up charge to use seasonings. Each person is charged for each that is used. There's an up charge to get more charcoal. The service was great when we first got there. But then had to chase them down to get the bill when we wanted to leave. I think like a lunch/appetizer kind of spot. But to actually get full off of the food you will have to spend a lot. Bc a small amount comes on each skewer. We spent only about $30. We just wanted a taste of things. We didn't get anywhere near full. So I would estimate about 60-100 a person (again an estimate) to get full. But the food is good. What I didn't like about it was the size of the skewers- there were on average three small dime sized pieces of meat on each skewer. I also didn't like that I had to get up to get the skewers as the location of the freezer wasn't easy to get to, and not ideal to have to keep getting up when you're dining with others. They also have dishes that you can order on the side, but despite ordering 3-4 extra dishes we left pretty hungry. read more

We really liked this place! First of all, all of the servers were super friendly and very attentive. The table was cleared often and they checked in with us regularly. There is a charcoal few of $4.00 for the table (as much as you need) and 99¢ per person spice fee. You grab a tray and all the skewers you want from the fridges. All skewers are $1.20 each. Cook them yourself over the charcoal and then put the empty skewer in the container they give you. At the end of the evening they'll count up the skewers and charge you accordingly. There was such a great variety of skewers to choose from. Of course there were the standard chicken, scallops, shrimp, wagyu beef, and fish cakes. But there were also more adventurous items like beef tongue, chicken skin, and abalone. There were lots of different varieties of vegetables on skewers too. You can use a QR code to order sides like noodles and rice. They have beer and sake and soft drinks. I was so glad we tried this place.
