The floor was sticky the moment we walked in, which wasn't a great first impression. It took us about 10 minutes to get seated, even though the place wasn't busy because they don't have a hostess. The bartender is juggling multiple roles (bartender, waiter, and hostess), so service was understandably very slow. To make things worse, there's no AC inside, and the dark decor made the already hot day feel even more uncomfortable. On the upside, the food had good flavor and was reasonably priced. I'd definitely consider ordering takeout again, but I won't be dining in here anytime soon. read more

I really didn't want to write this review. I mean that with all my heart. I support minority owned businesses and I truly want them to trive. I hope this place makes the necessary changes, so it too can thrive. I take this foodie life seriously and with that, I take reviewing seriously so here goes. Firstly, I was very excited to come here. Having a new brunch restaurant that's minority owned was a dope thing to see. When I looked at their website and saw that they had a breakfast happy hour I lost it! I love when food is affordable. However this excitement was killed by the actual experience. Secondly, interior decor of the place left me feeling confused. It felt showy yet unfinished and unrefined. All in all it was lacking cohesivness. The music was great by the way but it was too loud for breakfast. People just wake up before having breakfast, loud music that early is just uncomfortable no matter how good the song. Thirdly, the service seemed to follow the lead of the interior decor. Overall unrefined. We were asked if we wanted metal or plastic utensils. I've never been asked that while dining in at a brunch restaurant. I feel like if your going to advertise a quality dining experience then that question shouldn't be asked. Quality should be the assumption. Our waitress wasn't as attentive and seemed unsure of herself. The food was the most disappointing part. We ordered the chicken and waffles. The chicken was INCREDIBLY dry. I'm not one to ever waste food and I always clean my plate. I had to pack this up and give it away to a homeless man. For me to not finish my first meal of the day is unheard of. The waffle had no flavor and it was accompanied with pink syrup. That syrup felt and tasted like sugar slime with food coloring. I felt that this place was more concerned with appearances rather than good quality and a good restaurant experience. It was my first time trying this establishment. It's been recommended by so many of my friends. However, I didn't have the best experience unfortunately. The name is so clever because the amount of food they give you is HUGE! I ordered the fried devil eggs and the strawberry honey hot wings. The devil eggs were different. I've never had deep friend devil eggs. The yolk could've used some seasoning and sprucing. The fried egg white was very bland considering it was deep fried. The dish did come out very hot which I enjoyed. The honey hot wings were decent. I wish I would've ordered plain wings instead. The sauce was decent but it lacked flavor despite the name being strawberry hot. I would recommended more seasoning for their fried batter. The service was awesome. I wish I could remember the waiters name. However, she was great. She was very attentive and honest about what we should order. She had a couple of recommendations for the table. She really made sure we were taken care of thought out our dining experience which I appreciated. The food was a little slow coming out but she made sure that everything else was coming out swiftly. She did a great job. The ambiance was to be desired. The restaurant could use some improvements and enhancements...mainly the flooring. The establishment isn't meant to be a fancy restaurant however, upkeep should be maintained. Behind the bar looked chaotic and messy as well. Checked this spot out based on a friends recommendation, the food was absolutely delicious! I had the chick and waffles, chicken was juicy and flavorful and the waffle was fluffy. My friend had the lobster tail and said it was great. The mocktails are fun and honestly I feel underpriced for all the work they put into them. Stopped in Philly for the Roots Picnic, and of course we had to get our brunch on! Let me get a couple of negatives out the way, because we enjoyed ourselves despite them. (1) They ran out of a good portion of the food so the menu was limited. (2) There's no liquor here (Super bummer, but there is a liquor maybe 5-7 minutes away and you can bring whatever you purchased in). Now that that is out of the way...Can I give a super shout-out to the staff!!! Despite the things I listed, they went over and beyond to makes sure we had a good time and enjoyed the food they did have. Good spacing and nice vibes for a turn up, but the music didn't over power the conversations at the tables. The food was super delicious! (Everything I sampled at the table was really good, but the chicken & waffles were the star for me). I genuinely wanted to like this place because I heard they were getting bullied by other business owners on the block and because it's a black owned business, but unfortunately, the food and experience fell short. My boyfriend and I arrived on a weekday morning and there were not many people in there at all. When we got inside, we did not get a warm welcome. The overall aesthetic of the restaurant is trying to give cute aesthetic, but I feel like it was just not there fully. We ordered the chicken and waffles which were disappointing. The waffles were soft and did not have much taste. The chicken was very crispy on the outside and extremely dry and lacked seasoning on the inside. There was 2000s R&B playing very loudly, which I could appreciate if the restaurant was packed, but it was just 4 customers in there. The food was absolutely amazing--delicious, flavorful, and made with love. I really appreciated the vegan options, which were just as satisfying as everything else on the menu. The atmosphere was beautiful and welcoming, and the service was top-notch from start to finish. The coffee was incredible, and all of the drink specials were on point. I really wanted to love this place. The name is cute and the location is great, but they've got some work to do. Went on a Friday and it wasn't crowded but the vibe was a little off. The AC wasn't working so there were fans all over the place, and the bathroom was rough (broken toilet seat, no real trash can, just a bucket?). Food wise, my partner got the Chubby Chick and Waffles and thought it lacked flavor. I had the Chubby Stack and felt the same; looked good but tasted kind of bland. Again, this place has a lot of potential, and I really hope they take the time to fine-tune the details: better ambiance, attention to cleanliness, and most importantly, food that delivers on flavor. My family and I came to this restaurant today for Mother's Day Brunch, and had a time! The food was great - well seasoned - and we had an assortment of options to chose from fried fish, shrimp, oysters, rice and peas, yogurt parfait, fruit, waffles (plenty of toppings), banana pancakes, bagels, the peach cobble french toast was chefs kiss! Visited: 4/26/25 I had to visit Cubby Chicks after seeing the viral TikTok about local businesses giving Chef Keira and her clientele a hard time. I immediately texted my friends, and we planned a Philly Day Trip from NYC! A quick 1.5-hour Amtrak ride later, and we were standing outside Cubby Chicks, ready for greatness. Let me start by saying: y'all have NEVER had a meal like the one Chef Keira has curated at her restaurant. As we were studying the menu (because honestly, we wanted everything), Chef Keira herself came over to introduce herself and answer our questions. Friend A asked about the Bang Bang Bites -- fried shrimp and salmon on a bed of fries topped with bang bang sauce (she requested the sauce on the side due to dairy). Friend B asked about the Hash It Out -- a breakfast bowl loaded with deep fried potatoes, onions, peppers, sausage, bacon, cheese, and a medium fried egg. Chef Keira immediately offered a vegan version with vegan sausage and vegan cheese and told my friend to detail exactly how she wanted it when ordering. When it was my turn, I asked if I should go with the pancakes or waffles... Chef Keira said "NONE." She said those plates were for the unadventurous eaters. In my head, I was like, don't threaten me with a good time! I told her, BET! and asked for her recommendation. Without hesitation, she told me to order the crab-stuffed beignet -- and honestly, after hearing the word beignet, she could have told me it was made with unicorn dust and I still would have said done. When the food came... OH. MY. GAWWWD. The plates are BIG -- like, "don't eat before you come" big. I tasted the Bang Bang Bites first: perfectly seasoned fries (HUNTY, seasoning was on point), fried salmon bites that were juicy without a drop of grease, and HUGE shrimp full of flavor. The vegan Hash It Out? DELICIOUS. The vegan sausage was so flavorful that if I hadn't known, I would've thought it was real meat. Now my plate -- the crab-stuffed beignet -- arrived last (and honestly, I love a little drama LOL). Let me tell you: STUFFED isn't even the word. Chef Keira must have gathered a whole crab family reunion to fill these beignets. I compared it to a beignet I had in New Orleans last fall for $9 each that barely had a teaspoon of crab -- Cubby Chicks' beignet absolutely crushed that memory. It was the BEST $30 I've ever spent, and YES, I will 1000% order it again. Our server (who was Chef Keira's bestie) asked how the food was, and at first I was speechless because the food hit my soul. All I could say was, "Darling, I just ate like my last name is Vanderbilt!" Then -- as if the heavens hadn't already opened -- someone brought us a Peach Cobbler Cheesecake Stuffed French Toast. Let me confess: I don't even like peach cobbler. Peach is not my fruit. But THIS??? THIS was a game-changer. It was hands down the best dessert I've ever had. (Sorry Ocean Prime's carrot cake, you're now #2.) One of my friends said it best: "Never order a peach cobbler anywhere else, because it will never taste this good." Period. Final thoughts: To the people of Philly -- if you love seasoning, generous portions, and real love cooked into your food, Cubby Chicks is a MUST. NYC folks -- hop on the Amtrak (my RT ticket was $48) and treat yourself. (A Lyft XL from the station was only $15, tip included!) I visited with my daughter and SIL on Saturday morning to show support after seeing the news. Unfortunately, the experience wasn't great--from the service to the table setup to the lack of healthier menu options. Some of us are trying not to be a "Chubby Chic," lol so a balance between indulgent and nutritious choices would be nice. We ended up just getting two bottles of Fiji water and a coffee, and were charged $29. Rather than dwell on it, we paid and left. Yes we even tipped our base 20% (it's just what we do...everyone is entitled to a bad day). That said, the concept is cute, and I'd love to see them get the support and guidance needed to refine the execution. Maybe they could be nominated for one of those restaurant makeover shows. I was the only customer and I wasn't sure they would be open. I walked in and spoke to someone at the bar and they said I could sit anywhere. I ordered of the menu basic breakfast items. Pancakes, bacon and potatoes. Food came out fast and everyone seemed busy but friendly. The decor reminds me of a sweet 16 bday party at a firehouse. I think they want to be a club on a budget. Ordered a very large takeout order today for Administration Day. Where do I begin, the food was honestly amazing!! I got the Bang Bang Bites which is fried shrimp and fried salmon on a bed of fries in their bang bang sauce. The sauce was so delish, I think I can literally drink the sauce out of a bottle. It was so smooth but tangy it hits that spot.... and the shrimp and salmon were cooked perfectly. I also got an order of the fried deviled eggs with shrimp...... Mind blowing wow!!!! I met the owner and her brother at pick up they are so kind, my order was so large we had to Uber back to the office and they helped us into the car with our order. On top of the kindness this fabulous establishment offers Cubby Chicks just continued to go above and beyond for us they gave us free drinks with our order, an assortment of amazing, beautiful fruit drinks. I had the banana peach. Slammin!!! This spot is a Gem and I am so glad we finally tried them. I definitely will be going back again and again and again! Thank you so much for a fantastic lunch. This is the worst black owned place to ever go to. The owner is very rude and so are the workers. The food is mediocre at best and the portions are for a small child. When I asked about the portion I was met with a very stern "that's the portion" as if my complaint is a very regular complaint. I asked for a refund and they acted like it couldn't be done. After going back and fourth with the owner for 20 mins I finnaly got my refund and was called "broke" after it was all said and done. My son and I arrived and wasn't thrilled with the look outside but went in anyway. The interior wasn't any better but I have had some banging food at holes in the wall. We were seated and unfortunately it was dirty, plastic cutlery and we noticed food was being delivered in take away boxes. ugh. We sat there for over 15 minutes with no acknowledgement at all. It was like we were invisible. We left. Very disappointing. Oh, and the choice of music from DJ was not not a brunch vibe. Plenty of places in the city that want my money. Took my mother and wife here for Mother's Day. After looking at menu we get there to find out it's buffet only on Mother's Day at $65 per person. Food options where limited not even any eggs in brunch buffet. Decor was mid my wife sat at a table that had a huge gap from wall so she had to scoot over by me to be comfortable. No server greeted us, it was bottomless mimosas but we only had one round no server ever came back to bring more or ask were we good or anything. When we asked the one server if he had apple or orange juice u replied to my wife in a snarky manner "we don't have no apple juice, orange juice yeah". We asked for 3 water which he never brought. I had to ask another server who kept walking by for water which she finally brought in fountain cups with lids and no straws. When I asked for my check I was told ok and left there for a half hour I ALMOST DINED AND DASHED but I wouldn't want anyone to do me like that at my business. Especially a black owned business but this was a super poor experience for $210 and I was not offered and discount or anything just a speechless apology. Really killed my mother's day vibe for my family. I hate to leave reviews but this was necessary. I haven't had such a poor dining experience possibly ever and the owners need to know. Food was a bit salty as well I.e. the fish and shrimp. Other than that the food was good I must say however I was looking forward to the menu and we had to have buffet.
