Food Quality & Taste- 3 Overall, the food was good. The savory items were seasoned very well. I tried the Fried Catfish and Grits. I'd rate that a 4/5. It was seasoned well, the catfish was crispy, and the grits were creamy. The beef bacon is 4/5. I also tried the Blueberry Lemon waffle. This is was a 2/5. The waffle was quite hard and the lemon filling tasted like pie filling out of the can. This was unfortunate. Overall, I'd recommend to go and support the business, but steer clear of the waffles. Service- 4 The service was quite slow, but very courteous! For example, when reminding a staff member about my coffee order, the server moved quickly with a very positive energy. NOTE: Reservations on made through Yelp. They are often busy, so I'd recommend a reservation. I placed myself on the waiting list, but that didn't seem to be successful. Atmosphere- 5 Toast Cafe has such a nice vibe! I went on Valentine's Day, and it was decorated nicely! In addition to the Valentine's Day decor, I appreciate the focus on Black culture. There was a Black movie playing on the TV, "Old School" R&B music playing, and Black history figures on the wallpaper. Lastly, they provided options to play games while waiting for your food. Games like dominoes and Uno. Such a creative and Pro-Black atmosphere. Value- 3.5 Overall, the restaurant provided a solid experience. Some of the food items were not as great as I'd hoped, but the positive service and wonderful atmosphere somewhat compensated for the food. Opportunities for Learning- 3.5 The restaurant is located next to Malcolm X Memorial Park. Additionally, there are many Black historical figures on the wallpaper. I loved Toast! It's noisily cheerful. I was luckily in the mood for that. Don't go if you want a quiet and solitary experience. The food was great. I got fried whiting with cheesy grits. It took a while to come out, which was fine with me, because it meant they were cooking it hot and fresh to order. And when it arrived on the table it looked great and it was clear that it had just come off the stove a minute earlier. Everything was hot, and the fish was golden and crisp on the outside. The food was delicious, totally worth the wait. Take a look at the picture I uploaded. So many places that serve fish and grits put down a plate of brown and beige. It looks sad and unappetizing. Toast's fish and grits has these beautiful red and green diced peppers and that little stalk of thyme sticking up. Isn't it pretty? I don't even like peppers. It didn't matter, I was excited to eat it. The restaurant was really slammed when I showed up. But the staff made clear that they were not ignoring me. They made sure to keep my coffee cup full. I wish there was a way to rate a place on food and service. Off the food alone this place is a four star the service is a -0 star. The service at this place is so horrible to the point where I honestly recommend going else where to eat especially if you are someone who is short temperament because you'll be ready to fight. I admire them being Black, and always love to patronize my people in all that they do. However I cannot support a $25 menu while having your guests plastic spoons to eat. The Dollar Tree exists. Ghetto zooowwwwnnn. And that is literally what this place gave. We were seated to a table that was wiped down with a wet napkin. Absolutely no sanitation ....and the flooor... yeah let's not talk about it. Then after being seated we were given water or nothing, waited 34 minutes as the waiters walked by. I understand it's in West Philly but come on West Phil has more class than this. We get our food and literally had to beg for more plastic spoons. Walked in with no reservations on a mid Sunday afternoon. Was greeted properly staff seemed friendly and professional. We originally sat at the bar until more people left we were able to request a small table for two with no issues our food took over 40 minutes and didn't all come out at once but I was given a completely coffee for the wait they had to make a new pot and that also took a while. Also first drink on Sunday for a mimosa was free so that was great & it tasted fine. Everyone made sure several times we were okay. It was clean inside. I just wasn't too happy with my Mac and cheese it wasn't good and I won't dare try it again. Catfish and green were decent. The lemonade was amazing and my coffee was good. It's a bit pricy I spent $42 with tip just for myself and my friend paid $22 I think with an iced coffee and her chicken and waffles which she said it didn't taste that good to together but she's been here before. The menu belies its size! I had cheese grits and eggs over med. Perfectly prepared presentation and taste were on par with any well established, skilled eatery. My son had eggs, beef bacon and coffee. For my tea I hesitantly asked for alternate milk and sweetener. Instead of side eye I was served a huge cup of nicely prepared tea (no bag), with oat milk and honey. Sorry, no pics of food this time. We had a reservation and were seated pretty quickly but I can tell they're still figuring out how to run the business. Just walked out of breakfast with my family and I'm sad that we can't come back. Landed at PHL airport after a long 24 hours of traveling, 4 adults 3 kids, exhausted and hangry. Saw this spot on yelp and the pics got me. Though parking was a little difficult to figure out (considering we are not from a city or used to street parking), I am SO GLAD we did not give up on getting in there. Once we walked in we were immediately greeted, they are a small spot but he rearranged tables and chairs immediately to accommodate our family. Menu had great variety and I couldn't decide, we all got something different to share and EVERY SINGLE DISH WAS ON POINT. Though I really wanted to try the oxtail and grits (only served on Sundays), I was not disappointed by anything else we ordered. Toast is my new favorite breakfast spot and a true local gem. I went there this morning for my second time and left knowing I will be back for a third! To drink, I ordered a custom made iced coffee with oak milk, brown sugar and cold foam and it was so yummy. This location is really small. We were greeted and seated immediately. Our table was really close to the door. I am not sure if the AC was broken but it was really hot! They had a couple of fans blowing but none near me. Our waitress was phenomenal! The fried whiting and grits was good. Also, on Sunday there is a complimentary glass of mimosa. I also ordered the peach lavender lemonade ( no alcohol ). They were out of peach so I substituted with mango. The mango switch was not bad at all. I also ordered the Blueberry lemondade 2out 10. So disappointed, you could literally taste the powdered lemondade mix which was nasty and barley taste the blueberry. It was also watery. I came here on one of my visits to Philadelphia. It was a BLACK owned spot. BYOB. There was only street parking available but we got lucky and was able to park right out front. I absolutely adored the fresh flowers on the table. It set the mood for a great brunch. Our waitress was super nice. I loved her glasses and she was very helpful with the menu as we were new to this place and she made awesome recommendations. I am more of a savory girl when it comes to the brunch, but the praline French toast with whip cream was * chefs kiss*. I love the artwork on the wall and the variety in the menu. While we tend to get used to the normal, same old, boring brunch menu this one was a little revamped with some razzle. Even the manager was super nice. We were sitting there talking and realize that I our food was taking a long time to come out and he offered us a free drink on the house and came over very apologetic. This is something that you're not generally used to in brunch spots because they're always super packed. We appreciated it and continue the conversation. Our food. came out shortly after. Just be mindful this place close early but it's also brunch so don't expect a dinner meal. This place gets five stars for me even with having to wait a long time for food, but because the staff and the owner was super apologetic and nice about it I can appreciate the customer service for that reason. This was my first time trying Toast Cafe. I would say this place is very good with room for improvement. They've only been open for about 6 months it seems. Its a small venue, 30 people can sit down between tables and bar area seating. The music is definitely pretty loud so conversations get noisy fast if it's packed. The decor is really nice though! As far as the food and service, I got the fried whiting (fish) and grits. The grits were cheesy (which I liked) but could have been cooked a little longer for a more creamy texture. The fish however was cooked a little too long and was over done so it was too crunchy. They had nice plating and presentation. I did overhear other people say they had some inconsistencies in temperature but my food was hot. The service was friendly but it definitely takes a little longer than normal from ordering to delivery at the table. Overall I will definitely look to come back and try them again once they've settled down into a routine and can handle different pace of crowds. Bonus points because it's a black woman owned establishment. If you're in the area, bring your patience and give them a try. read more
