For appetizers, we had the coconut shrimp served over sliced plantains with a lemongrass sauce. The flavors were good, but the shrimp were noticeably over-fried (see my video), which took away from what could have been a standout dish. Sonora's menu offers a diverse Latin-inspired selection with dishes from South America, Cuba, Mexico, Portugal, and Puerto Rico. I was intrigued by the variety. I chose a Cuban-inspired dish: Angus skirt steak served with lobster and plantain fried rice and topped with a quail egg saffron lime garlic mojito sauce. The steak was tender and cooked to order, but the fried rice was underwhelming--just a hint of lobster flavor with only a few tiny pieces of lobster. The quail egg was nicely done. My friend ordered a Colombian dish: chicken stuffed with sweet plantain, goat cheese, peppers, and chorizo, served with saffron mashed potatoes and a sweet sherry sauce. She loved it and said the portion size was generous--I passed on a taste but took her word for it! They also offer brunch, jazz nights, and a paella night, which I'd love to check out in the future.
