Went back to CHOP and this time I was informed up front about the rice being cooked in beef stock (i'm vegan). I really appreciate this! They were unable to provide rice not cooked in beef stock, but they did offer to substitute a side of my choice. Love this restaurant. From the moment you walked in the door you are made to feel very welcome. They take reservations but walk-ins, like ourselves were well received and immediately seated. One thing that was obvious was how accommodating they were. The place is a two story building with a beautiful decor and very pleasant staff. Their outside patio downstairs and up have a beautiful view of Lake Michigan. The inside of the restaurant it's very comfortable and the tables are well spaced. The food was amazing, from their delicious home made bread (pop overs) to their salads and entrees. The desert was just as delightful. We had a variety of choices all beautifully presented. Our salads were work of art which were easy to the eye and the pallet, I had the seasonal salad with apple vinaigrette. Awesome! My food was great, I order the New York strip and my husband had the scallops. The scallops were nicely browned with a delicious topping of bacon specially cooked. My husband twice bake potato was flavorful and warm and delicious, loaded with everything you will expect but giving you that unexpected unique taste. When we first arrived we asked to be seated outside, however it was intolerably hot. Other people shared our opinion and asked to be seated inside as well. This created a challenge, one that the staff handle with grace and charisma. They were able to accommodate everyone who had change their minds. (4 families, us included) and the hostess was very apologetic even though it was not her fault. The place it's a bit pricey but perfect for that special dinner, anniversary or a date to impress. We ate dinner at CHOPS on July 6yh. The food and service were excellent. Two problems. A service charge of 3.99% was added. Ridiculous. We took a carrot cake desert ack to the hotel. We've been there twice. The first time (10/2021) my wife and I had a very good experience-good service, very nice steak done properly, excellent wine. Ambiance was Door County chic. Pricey but a good value. The second time (5/2023) was much different. Four of us were rushed through a mediocre dinner--this time my steak was tough and very overcooked, and my friends' dishes were all merely OK. Service was less than great. As a recurrent visitor in Door County, I had been looking forward to trying Chop for the first time on this year's trip. My wife and I had made reservations for their rooftop, and called to confirm availability for our chosen section. When we arrived, there was a long line at the hostess stand where a number of walk-in diners were requesting tables. I let the hostess know that we had made a reservation and was assured that when they had worked through the line of walk-ins we would be seated. After about 20 minutes of waiting in line and watching numerous others seated at the rooftop, we were informed that they had given our table away and no longer had room for our rooftop reservation. We expressed disbelief that they had given away a table that was reserved and confirmed multiple times. After some debate with the hostess, we were told that they guessed they could stick us at a table intended to seat larger groups of 6. The service did not improve once seated. We were made to feel like an unwelcome imposition on the staff, who frequently rushed us in what I presume was an attempt to clear the table faster and make room for a large group. Our reservation was made to coincide with hours for their prix fixe menu, but we were told that we must order everything immediately as the wait for our table caused us to miss the prix fixe time. We had looked at the menu ahead of time and placed our orders. Our steaks arrived without the sauces we ordered and I inquired if this was still coming. The waitress was snooty and rather than simply saying they don't have our requested sauce, she made a fuss to argue that we had never ordered it and if we had we couldn't get it anyway as they don't carry them. She insisted on taking our steaks back, which we stopped her from doing as there was no point. When the time came for dessert the waitress was again quite pushy in trying to get us to take dessert to go; she asked if we would like a doggy bag for the dessert, and then again if we would like to just take our dessert to eat elsewhere. After being told no both times she again insisted that she pack dessert up for us despite our answers. After much back and forth she agreed to bring dessert to our table and left the check. At this point the rude service had made us feel more than unwelcome and I paid for our dinner without leaving a tip for the staff. My wife went to use the washroom but was accosted on the way by another staff member who made a rather public scene in scolding her for not tipping. She was told that we were not welcome back to dine at Chop - although given our experience I think we were at no risk of subjecting ourselves to this ordeal again. read more

Great food, great service, great atmosphere. My husband and I luckily snagged some bar seats since we walked in with no reservations and were pleasantly satisfied from start to finish. Drinks were great and they have a great whiskey selection. We ordered the goat cheese crostini which I thought was a tad bit too sweet but still ate it with no hesitation. We both ordered a steak that came with your choice of butter and both were cooked perfectly and seasoned very well. We ordered the bananas foster per the bartenders recommendation and it was a gluttonous and delicious end to the meal. Chop was not our first choice for our wedding rehearsal dinner, but after hosting our event there it was painfully obvious it should have been. The event staff was very easy to work with and made our evening very special and stress free. We had our event downstairs in their event space, and it was perfect! Large enough for all of our guests, yet still intimate and gave us privacy from the other people eating at the restaurant. The menu was great and the food was superb. We had the opportunity to offer five dishes to our guests (New York Strip, Farmhouse Pork Chop, Walleye, Salmon and Veggie Stir Fry) and all were AMAZING! Our guests are still commenting on how good the food was almost a month later. Chop ended up being the perfect place for us to have our rehearsal dinner, and it will be a staple for our future visits to Sister Bay & Door County. read more

This was our second visit to CHOP for the Early Diner Special, a special 3-course menu for $29.99 from 5-5:30. The bar was crowded when we arrived at 5. They have happy hour prices on drinks including a Wisconsin old fashioned for $5. We saw them lined up down the bar. I noticed that all of us arriving early were escorted upstairs. We had a very small table at the top of the stairs. Dinner starts with freshly baked popovers, which are delicious. They offer their signature CHOP salad (a deconstructed wedge salad), potstickers or a cup of the soup of the day as the first course with the Early Diner special. They used to provide the option of having two of the items from the first course menu and skipping dessert, but, unfortunately, they recently discontinued that option. My husband had the potstickers--three deep-fried pot stickers. I had the salad. Both were great. I chose the grilled salmon with wild rice for my main course. My husband had the beef burgundy. He raved about the sauce. I opted to take my key lime pie home for later, but my husband found room for the salted caramel sundae. The food was good. The only complaint I had was that we felt rushed. I think the Early Diner special is a warm up for the waitstaff and the kitchen so they can prepare for the evening. The Early Diner special is a great value, but it wasn't the dining experience I was looking for. We like to eat early, but next time I will order from the regular menu and insist on a leisurely meal. read more

I tried my wife's steak: It was seasoned perfectly, done correctly and literally was one of the best pieces of steak I have ever had. I have had Morton's, Chicago Chop House, Emeril's in Orlando and Bass Chop House among other famous steak places. Chop in Sister Bay nailed it. Dessert- Maple Creme Brûlée. Just order one and enjoy! This review is long overdue. Took my wife to Chop for our anniversary dinner. We had reserved a table outside on the second level, so we could have a great view of the bay. When we got there, it was unfortunately raining. What did Chop do? They had reserved a table for us inside just in case, right by the window with a great view of the bay. We started out with the scallop appetizer, which was incredible. I proceeded to have one of the top 3 steaks I have ever had in my life. It was a special cut that evening, and so wonderfully rich. They cooked it perfectly, it came with a great crust on the outside. These cooks know what they are doing. At the end of the meal we were given a piece of carrot cake as a Happy Anniversary gift. I am a huge carrot cake fan, and this certainly did not disappoint. Everyone there made us feel special, and well taken care of. I can't recommend this restaurant enough if you are in Sister Bay. Food was good but service and overall dining experience could use some changes. Look at your receipt as we had an extra charge of a wine carafe that we did not order. The lamb was perfectly cooked and the filet was flavorful and complimented by the whiskey pepper cream sauce. The portions are just right. Food and ambiance was good. The service was good too except- There was a notice on the menu that a service charge of 3.99% would be added to all bills. This was not an added fee for using a credit card it was just an added charge. First time i've seen this. There were five people in our group but when the server presented the bill I noticed a gratuity of 20% had already been added and it was computed based the total including tax and the 3.99% added fee. Normally a tip is added for larger groups. I'm guessing this is done because some people might reduce the tip to offset the additional fee the restaurant added. Additionally when the server brought the card reader to the table "add tip" was displayed. Luckily I had noticed that the tip was already added because I usually review my resturant bills for accuracy. So I question the arbitrary 3.99% service fee, the way the tip was computed and the server not telling me that the tip had already been added to the bill even though we had just five people. read more

Our experience at CHOP wasn't as spectacular as we'd hoped. We arrived for our reservation about 10 minutes early and were greeted by a hostess outside the door and told our table would be a little wait (understandable as we were early). We were not allowed inside, rather asked to wait outdoors (likely a COVID-19 precaution). On a beautiful evening, the outdoor area is nicely spaced with outdoor heaters but this evening was rainy. To make up for this, a very nice server asked us for a drink order and promptly delivered our wine & beer. The dinner itself was underwhelming. My husband's steak was well cooked but lacked in flavor. My salmon was delicious but the rice was cold. Our server did a great job and I'm assuming this was just an "off" evening. There was two rather large tables being served at the same time as us which may have effected our meal. We are open to trying in the future for a hopefully better experience. read more

Since it was a week night we got right in with no wait. There is limited seating, so I would suggest making reservations ahead of time. I ordered the white fish because it is locally caught, and a side order of crab legs, my boyfriend ordered a steak. We both go the potato soup, which was heavenly. Our food arrived at the perfect timing, giving us enough time to enjoy our drink, popovers and soup. The white fish was good, but I don't think I would order it again. The rice it came with was just plain horrible which is fine because I over ordered. The crab legs were good but super expensive for a side. I should have checked with the waiter on the "market price" which was $40 for 1/4 a pound. I can't imagine what they are charging for the dinner portion. But for that price would have rather had them be amazing vs good.. My boyfriends steak was very flavorful, and you can't go wrong with a good mashed potatoes and the steak Oscar style. After we finished our meals our waiter stopped by with the desert menu. I was full and didn't care to order anything. My boyfriend on the other hand can never pass up a sweat treat at the end. Tried CHOP again this year and ordered the ribeye. For $49.00, not only was it small, but it was too fatty (even for a ribeye). The same steak last year was just better. Not sure if they switched their meat distributor or maybe I just got a bad piece, but I would stick with the NY Strip or the filet. Excellent meal with great service. They added extra outdoor seating on their front lawn for Covid and it worked out well. They also had small bottles of hand sanitizer on each table which was a nice touch. All staff were wearing masks, and they had paper menus. They also had contactless payment at the end-you could scan a QR code on your phone and pay with your card. We had made a reservation on OpenTable and were seated promptly. Our server Jason was great-very friendly and helpful. We did the seafood specials on Friday-we tried the scallops and the salmon-both were superb. I upgraded to the twice baked potato and that was a great option. We both tried the potato bisque soup-so good! The house white wine was also enjoyable-I would order it again.
