We wanted to get a quick snack and try the modern twist on the whoopie pie here. It was pretty quiet inside. All the whoopies were on display behind a glass cooler and are much smaller than expected. I like how they We ordered a coconut cream whoopie, which came cold due to the fridge, but tasty. It almost felt like we were eating a bite-size cupcake. VALUE FOR THE MONEY: Pricey for a small snack. I think they were $2-$2.50 each. OVERALL: I would come back again if I were in the area, but I still prefer the traditional whoopies (not that I eat them too often). read more

We love Chococoa for Sunday coffee and sweets after the Farmers Market. Great pastries. Tonight we went to Shuckin' Good time at Port Plums & Newburyport Olive Oil (awesome store) with the desserts from Chococoa, beautifully decorated whoopie pies. The oysters supplied by Newburyport Fish. Wine by Bronco Wine, Flowers by Pat at Beach Plum, Cheese from Dancing Goats. This kind of event with these great establishments help to make this town amazing. The place has a great location and is a great place if you want a quick coffee and to do some work, but the whoopie pies aren't the best. They've got some great flavors, but the cake is a bit dry. I read someone else says theirs was frozen. It's refrigerated not frozen but problem is you dont need to refrigerate buttercream in New England when its freezing out. Basically its a soild mass of cold cake and even more solid mass of buttercream which makes it bad. It makes it 3x as heavy and I threw it up all the way home. I was leaving NBPRT the other day and came across this spot - i thought I had visited all the bakeries in town. I quickly pulled over, hitting the curb, and entered this tiny corner bakery. It is quaint, pristine and pleasant. As you walk in you are met by two bakery cases filled with treats, one with all whoopie pies and the other with scones, muffins and more. The space appears to be run by a couple and they must do a lot of shipping, based on the shipping invoices, packaged mini-whoopie pies and conversation between the couple. I decided to try the mini-whoopie pies - there are 5 options - I bought the lemon, espresso and original - there are also raspberry and chocolate. They are refrigerated and remind you to keep them cold. The cake is nice - kind of fudgy since it is kept cold and the fillings have a good flavor and are buttercreams. That being said - for what its worth - these are not traditional whoopie pies, rather mini cake bites --- whoopie pies are not filled with buttercream, originally. I don't like eating cold baked goods. I give the product a 3 for the flavors and extra star for the overall appearance and personality of the owners. I won't go back for whoopie pies - but I would try one of the other pastries. read more

I purchased 4 whoopie pies at this sweet cafe last week, thinking it would be a perfect dessert for our dinner that eve. To our utter pleasure (my two boys aged 9 and 12 and my husband) we inhaled them for our dessert that evening and unanimously gave the bite sized pies a 10!! Chococoa is a nice, quiet place to chill out. The baked goods look absolutely fantastic. I haven't tried the whoopie pies, but I definitely want to. I had a really good ginger scone with lemon frosting, a combo I've never had before. It was good; not incredibly moist, but not totally dried out or anything. It was the end of the day, so it just wasn't fresh. But I do have a few problems with the place. Their chai tea isn't very good. It doesn't have much flavor and it left an odd filmy feeling in my mouth. My other problem with this place was more of a health and safety concern. They have all of their straws on the counter with the milk and things, but all the straws are uncovered and bunched together, so you can't help but touch a few just to pick up one. I don't know if this is a health code violation, but it's kinda gross to me. Nice place to hang out and have a scone, but I'm going to keep my eyes open for a better place. read more

These guys know their craft. Their claim to fame is their whoopie pies, which are uniquely good - the biggest difference is that well flavored buttercream frosting like one would find on a good cake, instead of the usual marshemllow creme. Also very nice are their croissants and scones, and I particularly like their lemon ginger scone! Chococoa is a go to place for dessert at our house. We stop here when we want a small treat in the afternoon or a dessert for visiting friends or a gift for a special occasion. Their featured product is their signature whoopee pie. The flavors are wonderful and many. The cake is dense and chocolate-y and the buttercream filling melts in your mouth. The whoopee pies I was first introduced to in New England had a sickly sweet frosting that is whipped and airy with cake that is sticky and flavorless. I never need to see one of those again! These are whoopee pies - refined. They are bite size - maybe two bite size - not overwhelming and leave you with room for one more. Just so good. They also offer gluten free options - not as many flavors, but I can't imagine being disappointed. Gift packaging is lovely - very elegant. The cafe is clean and bright and friendly and often offers samples. Coffee is also good which is a bonus. I go for the whoopee pies, but do like the coffee! Staff is wonderful and friendly. There are many other baked goods as well, but we really only get the whoopee pies. Greta's Great Grains is also housed at this location which is a wonderful bonus. read more

This place has a cool vibe. I met my brother here for a birthday coffee and some treats. Since it seems chocolate is big here we went with mochas instead of plain coffee. Mine with almond milk, his with whole milk. We also got amazing whoopie pies. So delicious and lots of different options including gluten free. This place is hit and miss for me. The first time I went, I got a muffin for breakfast, and a whoopie pie to have at home later. The whoopie pie was delicious, VERY chocolately, and with a buttercream filling that's not the traditional WP filling, but really rich and delicious. The muffin was OK. I liked the fact that it seemed to be made with butter instead of oil, so it didn't have the greasy glossiness that some retail muffins do. It was a mixed berry muffin, but it had a lot of spices that overpowered the fruitiness of the berries (enough spice that you'd have thought it was an pumpkin or apple spice muffin). Also, for some reason the person who waited on me insisted on heating it up before she would give it to me. I think she popped it in the microwave, so it wasn't the baker's fault that the muffin was a little gummy. The second time I went I was having a mean chocolate craving so I got just a chocolate whoopie pie. This time, though, the filling was just as good, but the chocolate cake part was nowhere near as chocolately. It almost tasted like an oreo instead of the rich truffley chocolate-cake taste I remembered from my first visit. I'm not sure if I got one from an overbaked batch, or if they're changing their recipe and using different ingredients. I've only had the vanilla whoopie pies, so I can't comment on the other flavors. The place does seem to have a wide variety of baked goods. It's worth giving this place a try. Chococoa's sometimes has a booth at the Newburyport Farmer's Market, so if you don't get to their retail store, you can still meet them and taste their treats. I'm going to try it again to see if they've recaptured to chocolatey goodness. And, as dana d. mentions, the people who work here seem really nice and are always up for some friendly conversation. UPDATE: I've been back again, and found that, sadly, the chocolate whoopie pie still is more Oreo-y than chocolaty. Too bad. I'm going to have to look elsewhere to get my chocolate fix. A chocolate lover's delight. Chococoa Baking Company has THE best hot chocolate in the area, made with steamed milk and topped with whipped cream. When I went in recently on a hot, humid day, Alan, cheerfully accommodated my request to put it on ice. For variety, they offer an outstanding Iced Mocha drink made with espresso and just the right amount of chocolate. Their specialty is a bite sized Whoopie. Co-owner, Julie, informed me that they are made with organic butter and free range eggs and 3 types of premium chocolate. My favorites are the Classic Vanilla Cream and the Pumpkin with Ginger Cream. They also offer Espresso, Raspberry, and Peppermint cream fillings. You can purchase them individually or in packages of 3 to indulge in later. Since the filling is made with real butter cream and not that horrible Crisco filling, they do need to be refrigerated, particularly in the hot weather. They make great hostess gifts and the staff cheerfully presented them in a gift bag with colored tissue (complimentary) Certainly appreciated since I was in a hurry and this saved me making an extra stop for gift wrap. The price point is very affordable at $4.98 for a 3 pack and $1.68 for each Whoopie. Web shopping just launched! Julie and Alan always make me feel welcome when I visit and they remember everyone's name who stops by. They seem to know everyone in town. The coffee is good and the space comfortable. The wi-fi is frustratingly unreliable, but a bigger problem is that the owner uses the customer tables in the cafe as her personal office, frequently spending long amounts of time sitting at them and having (loud) conversations on the phone. Sometimes she has business meetings here and twice I've heard her talking (disparagingly) about people I know, and not because I was at all trying to overhear. It's a cafe and public space, so I don't expect to have peace and quiet or conditions just as I might personally prefer them. But I also wouldn't myself take a long phone call here, out of consideration of the other customers, or talk so loudly about the neighbors. It's a small town. read more

After 2 attempts I say never again. The first try bought a muffin to go only to bite into at home...dry & stale so threw it out. This morning on way to work bought a small iced mocha coffee which was too sweet. Also bought an apple turnover 1st bite nothing 2nd bite the one & only tiny apple piece with rest of pastry remaining a paltry amount of apple sauce. This is one of those bakeries where I feel like if I complain the staff or even owner will roll their eyes. Wow...this place is more expensive than Starbucks. First of all, a small hot chai tea with espresso is over 5 dollars!! I didn't want to pay 5 dollars to taste a plant. It literally tasted like watered down dirt and I know for a fact they didn't put any espresso in it. The girls who made it seemed careless and were gossiping while they were making it so they clearly weren't paying attention either. What a waste of time and money. Next time I'll go to the black duck and get a 2 dollar coffee that actually has flavor in it. Plus this drink was suppose to wake me up and instead it made me want to go back to bed. read more
