I visited Chococoa Baking on a beautiful Saturday morning after stumbling upon it during my walk in Newburyport, and what a lovely surprise it was! This bakery has such a great and unique selection of whoopie pies and everyone is sure to find a flavor they'll love. I got a hot chocolate and a Boston creme whoopie pie and both were very delicious. The bakery was very busy at the time I was there and I did not find a seat, even as just one person. Luckily the building it's in has other seating which I found to be nicer and quieter than eating in the bakery. I will also say that the flow of the bakery is confusing. After walking in the door, you have to walk through most of the space to get in line, and then stand at the bar, in between seats to get any drinks you ordered. It wasn't too bad, but definitely felt a bit odd to me which was the main reason for 4 stars instead of 5. read more

Stopped by Chococoa after a recommendation, very happy I did! Very cozy yet spacious cafe, plenty of options in drinks, pastries, and their famous Whoopies. The Fluffernutter was my favorite but liked the Coconut Cream as well! read more

Good espresso, mixed service experience, bad food. Go for the music on sundays and the americanos- not the prices.

The whoopee pies top notch, all the flavor looked amazing and the ones I tried so good. The hibiscus Ice tea amazing. The counter people could be more helpful for people that have never been there before. (It was not busy) its a cool coffee/bakery the decor and vibe very chill. read more

Great service. Can be a little packed at times but they do a great job handling the crowd. Whoopie pies are so yummy. The coffee is always outstanding. read more

Horrible customer service. Gentleman working the counter glared at me to let me know he was ready for payment. Lacking people skills - food was not noteworthy read more

I love the whoopie pie selection they have. The drinks are also pretty good. Would recommend.

Coffee is good. They make a great Americano. Pastries are not that good. I ordered a scone and a ginger cookie and neither were good. I threw them out and saved the calories. The outdoor seating is great. read more

While walking through the Tannery Marketplace the smell of chocolate and baking was too good to pass up . The store had several customers, which gave us time to browse. Whoopie pies were their specialty. They had at least twelve different options, so hard to decide. We decided on salted caramel, raspberry and chocolate ganache. The service was so good, kind, patient and down to earth. So far, we only tried the salted caramel ( notice it is not in the picture..) and it was so good. Moist and delicious. Definitely a sweet treat , not to be missed . read more

Ordered a bacon quiche which had an expiration date of tomorrow on it and there were others in the case with an expiration 6 days out. Makes me wonder how long they store food in the case before selling. Isn't the point of a bakery to be... I don't know... Fresh? The quiche was about the size of my palm (and I have small hands) and was a whopping $9.62. Worse part? It just wasn't even good. It was tasteless, oily and maybe I'm getting the stale, several days old experience? Ugh. Shame to waste stomach space on things that aren't even baseline fine. read more

I went on a Sunday and found this place by accident when I was visiting the farmers market. I was pleasantly surprised that there was live music! I sampled the whole wheat raspberry scone (if you like a healthier option), cranberry orange scone, and a phenomenal bran muffin with dried fruit! I need to go back to try the coffee. read more

I've always received excellent service at Chococoa. I recently learned that they buy their croissants directly from Paris France. They always taste really good. They have many other items that are always delicious also. Julie, the owner is always very pleasant and helpful. I highly recommend this cafe anytime. read more

A small group of us decided on dessert & coffee here today. I really don't want to focus on the negatives, but other than the beverages - mostly coffee each of us found the baked goods stale or just not good. I ordered a scone which was more of a pastry than any scone I've had before. It lacked substance, just crumbling and an off taste. I decided to just push it aside and enjoy my black house blend ( hot) which was excellent. Friends had ordered whoopie pies which had us discussing our childhood devil dog days I don't know what else to write other than the place is always clean with open areas to sit and relax .. but the baked goods were definitely not what we'd hoped for read more

If you want great service - this is your place. The baristas are always friendly and helpful and make great coffees. The vibe is always great in here - a locals place but also tourists coming in. Check it out for a cozy, friendly spot for coffee if you're in the area. read more

Not customer friendly! Like others said, there is no way to know the prices of items on display. So, I experienced sticker shock when the total was rung up. Customers have to face embarrassment asking the counter staff for individual prices and stand there publicly while they look up the price. Baked items were O.K. I am not sure if they are homemade or not. It was the cost secrecy and the way the woman who seemed to own the place, treated the young people behind the counter by scolding them. In addition, I found her rude to me when I asked a question. read more

I wish I had read the reviews before coming here! I had the same experience all the other reviewers had. Decent coffee, terrible pastries and unpleasant experience having to ask prices for everything! So awkward and weird. Very expensive pastries. Tastes completely flat and gooey. I gave it 2 stars for a decent coffee. read more

Owner not nice at all. Product pricey. I would have put my order back had I not been in a rush.

Any place that does not list its' prices or pricing policy ANYWHERE, as this bakery doesn't, is one, inconvenient and two suspicious. It is rude to the customer to not be given basic information and to be put in a position to have to ask or to be surprised at the register. C'mon this is just common curtesy. There is an expectation of knowing the price of an item before purchasing it! The baked goods are OK, some mediocre. read more

Unfortunately the whoopee pies are almost always cold and hard, due to the idea of baking them ahead of time and then freezing them. Not a good choice. Forget about the gluten free scones . . . . they're as dry as dry can be and they are tasteless. The unfortunate part of all this is that the atmosphere is cozy and comfortable, and the owners seem to be very friendly. Bummer ! read more

I live near here and come in sometimes when I am downtown. While the baristas are very pleasant, the owners seem to constantly put and talk down to employees. I was recently in and heard an uncomfortable conversation where the young employee seemed visibly uneasy, and I now feel uncomfortable supporting a company that is so inconsistent. read more

I used to get my daily coffee here. Prices seemed to be going up a lot ( this is happening everywhere) so I go less often.Last trip, I got a large latte. It was $6.83!!! I had given my normal tip $2.00 so a coffee with tip was nearly nine bucks. You lost me. I'm going elsewhere. Like the shop, but your prices are ridiculous. And I had stopped getting your chocolate croissants because they are often stale. Please make some changes. I'd love to come back as you have a great staff and nice location. But I don't know ANYONE who can pay that much for coffee. It's just bad business. Even if I was someone who sat in a coffeeshop working, I'd still hesitate before paying that much. And there's no way, I'd buy the coffee without tipping. I'd suggest losing the large selection of baked good and only offering ones that are fresh. Maybe offer a coffee club with coffee for $2-4 or something. I also noticed there were very few people in the store today. read more

I love this place, great owners and the best whoopie pies in eastern Massachusetts. Great selection of flavors. Stop in and check them out and better yet if you can't make it to Newburyport, go online and order as they ship everywhere. A must stop if your traveling in the area read more

I really like the atmosphere and location of Chococoa, but don't understand why nothing is labeled with a price. I paid $5 for a small cappuccino and $6 for a small spinach croissant which was nothing spectacular. I would not rush to go back. read more

You may have seen Chococoa's Whoopie Pies around town. They're the two bite whoopies that come in packages of three. They have the delicious vanilla, outstanding mocha, and... pumpkin. Yep, pumpkin. WHOOPIES: The past two weekends I attended different events where I was supposed to bring dessert, and both times I ordered a box of assorted whoopie pies. Two things - first, I did not really like whoopie pies before I tried the Chococoa version. These. Are. Outstanding. Second, I might as well stop baking and just pick up some whoopies when I need dessert for something. They are so much better than anything I could make myself. And pretty. MUFFINS & SCONES: The muffins (my favorite is the bran, they also have blue and other berry varieties as well as tasty savory muffins) and scones (blueberry, apricot, and others) are definitely worth a try. They are moist but not too cakey, and solid but not too heavy. And so much flavor. VARIETY: It's a small bakery, but there are a lot of choices. When I was in this morning, there were various muffins, scones, breakfast/coffee rolls and cakes, stuffed croissants, cookies and brownies, dessert cakes, cupcakes, petits fours, and, of course, whoopies. Finally, it must be said that the owners are among the world's nicest people. I go to Chococoa just about every Friday or Saturday morning to grab a bran muffin and a cup of coffee - they serve Atomic Cafe coffee including the dark roast "Diesel," which is reason enough to stop in. While we have a friendly chat about a variety of neighborly topics, they warm up my travel mug with a little hot water before pouring in the Diesel. It's a small touch, and it says so much about the kind of service they provide. If you live in Newburyport and have not tried Chococoa yet, I think you are missing out. Also, they have ample parking right out front. read more

This one is for people who specialize in something and do it EXCEEDINGLY well. BEAUTIFUL and CLEAN, well lit, spacious - ode to breakfast, light foods, pastries... But the star of the show are the Whoopie Pies. Delicate three bite confections, made with premium ingredients, rich chocolate and well balanced not icky sweet, just very well balanced, very well made. Blonde whoopies, red velvet whoopies, seasonal whoopies. Free sample Sunday. This husband and wife shop truly is a lovely labor of love. And I've never been a whoopie fan. Until now. Standing ovation of my day! read more

They have some solid gluten-free options and offer a nice, homey atmosphere in a solid location (Newburyport's second downtown, The Tannery). They make their pies on-site and you can peak into the kitchen area which is a nice touch. They take their pies very seriously here and it shows, though I have to agree with some of the other reviewers in that they are slightly on the dry side (this could be done on purpose for a longer shelf life or just that gluten free baking results in a drier product?). I don't know, all I know is the coffee is good and my kid's love the pies. Things are a little on the pricey side, but hey dude, you're in the Port! Also, they didn't used to be opposed to slackers hanging out and reading the free papers for hours on end while nursing their small regular, but that policy appears to have changed as last week I saw the owner personally bludgeon a deadbeat chair-hog to within an inch of his life with a porcelain serving tray. Just checking to see if you're paying attention, and you are! So yes, definitely give this place a shot. Brought to you with generous support from the Titanic Nut Company. read more

Just tried some of their little whoopie pies for the first time. We got in a big box at work and I dove in head first. I tried three: chocolate/vanilla, lemon/vanilla, and chocolate/raspberry. I do not know how they are still in business with these Whoopie pies. It's like eating a brick. Hard and dry. It's like they stole the drakes cakes recipe. Got some as a gift, spit it out and threw the rest in the trash. Zero freshness, 100% would survive the apocalypse read more

We purchased a dozen Whoopie Pies yesterday from the Cafe. They looked very fresh in the case with a great selection but the person behind the counter went out back and came back with our order. We were excited to have a taste when we got to the car but very disappointed to find they were partially frozen. I see that this is the recommended way to store but we intended to eat most (or all) that evening. They did taste great but would have been very embarrassed if we had brought these to guests to serve cold whoopie pies. read more

After a rough day mattress shopping (oh how i loathe pushy sales people), my husband and i decided we wanted a little treat, he first suggested ice cream, but I haven't been in the mood for it lately, so a little lightbulb went off and he suggested driving into town to try Chococoa since we have been meaning to give it ago. Sounded like a great idea to me. Town was bananas due to an event, but we lucked out and found a parking spot in the Tannery and felt like everything was coming up Milhouse. We went in, and there was no line! Score! We decided to get 6 mini whoopie pies, we each picked out three that sounded fun to try, and the guy behind the counter wrote them down and then headed to the back. Seems normal enough to us, as there are only a few on display in the case. He came out a few minutes later with a little box, rang us up and off we went. (so far so good right - why are you giving them 1-star jen?) We got in the car and started driving, my husband opened the box and went to hand me a delicious whoopie pie, as he exclaimed "you have got to be kidding me!" They were frozen!!!! All 6 pies were frozen. WTH? At no point did anyone ask us, are you taking these on a long journey? Would you like them ready for an trek through the sahara? Nope. We just wanted a little treat. They are no thawing on our kitchen counter, I may be able to give them a try at some point, but the moment has passed, and instead of having that perfect bite, to help make a terrible day just a bit better, the bitterness just continues. read more

Staff is the best! First time in today and when I asked about savory breakfast options, the woman at the register came around the counter and took the time to share the options with me. They accommodated everyone of my requests (like heating up the breakfast, having my cappuccino in a mug) and were just very welcoming. Spinach Feta Croissant was delicious and cappuccino was great. Would highly recommend I if you find yourself in Newburyport any morning. read more

They have some good teas and coffees and make a bunch of different whoopie pies and some pastries. Not bad stuff for that specific corner of the Tannery. That's the good news. The bad news: woe to you who decide to eat in and have any pet allergies. they let people free roam their dogs everywhere in here. On heavy dog days, you may unable to stay in the space for longer than 5 minutes it is consistently so bad with dander (thank goodness for albuterol!). And if you ask for a space where dogs can't literally wander up to you lick your hand, even the owner will not help you in any way. First time I had an issue with a dog invading my crotch space, when I said I was very allergic, she literally looked at my cup and plate of whoopie pie and asked me if I wanted that to go then read more

Mouth watering selection of small whoopie pies. You won't feel too guilty eating a few at once. We wandered in after they had closed (didn't realize til we left and saw the hours on the door - oops) and they were still remarkably friendly and helpful. We tried three of the pies - bourbon (yum), Boston creme (again, yum) and the winner chocolate ganache. So much choice that it was hard to pick just three. We also ordered an iced mocha which was fabulous and had a great amount of caffeine and wasn't too sweet. Finally, I bought some anadama bread and they even sliced it for me. Very nice and the bread is fantastic. Next time we're in downtown Newburyport we're going to make sure we stop in and try some more flavors of the whoopie pies and this time try to go in when they're actually still open! read more

I've been visiting Chococoa since they first opened their tiny shop in Newburyport. Many whoopie flavors later, my favorites are still the classic and the pumpkin with ginger cream. Alan or Julie always welcome you when you walk in, and the smell is amazing; a very rich chocolate and a hint of coffee. They package everything with care and support other local businesses and events and always stop to chat with you. They've recently moved into the Tannery and their new space is much larger with the same great selection. Try their hot chocolate (or iced hot chocolate) and a whoopie or two! read more

Anyone with a sweet-tooth looking for a beautifully hand-crafted, artisan dessert and decadent treat should not miss this lovely, comfortable spot on their next trip into Newburyport! Great local, small business, staffed and run by owners proudly working behind the counter, eager to engage in smalltalk about artisan/slow food and the local offerings. Fantastic petite whoopie pies were artful, mouth-watering whoopiness... organic sweet cream infused with flavors like espresso, pumpkin, and mint... gently sandwiched between small-batch-baked, bite-sized cakes made from three artisan chocolates... Time it right and you'll literally see the owners making and baking the whoopie pie ends while you order. This place is a slice of foodie sweet-tooth heaven, hidden on the outskirts of downtown Newburyport. This level of food luxury that reminded me of my years living in San Francisco... for a fraction of the price!! read more

FIRST: The address in the Yelp profile - NOT correct. Found that out the hard way - not being from the area, that was pretty annoying. (Though I guess shame on me for grabbing the address from here, and not double-checking their actual website). They are now located in the Tannery. This place was just ok - maybe I just built it up too much in my head in advance. I had a feta-spinach croissant; it wasn't bad, but I've definitely had a better version from a bakery on the Cape (Pie In the Sky), the dough seemed wrong (not light/flaky enough - not saying they use Pilsbury, but that's what it made me think of). My husband had a savory scone - he seemed pretty happy with it; I had a bite and it was decent - pretty moist, good flavor. Iced chai was decent. The staff were super-nice. Would consider going back for a dessert-treat if I was in the area again, but definitely won't be making a trek specifically for this place. read more

I love this bakery. The Whoopie Pies are divine, especially the salted caramel cream pies. Their other pastries are also excellent. I love their chocolate croissants (and I'm picky about croissants) and their ginger lemon scones....usually I don't like scones but these scones have a nice balance of light and fluffy texture.) Remember to ask for the pastries warmed up. The ambiance is so welcoming and warm, you can sit here for hours and read a book or work on your computer. This place is a gem. read more
