I visited Chococoa Baking on a beautiful Saturday morning after stumbling upon it during my walk in Newburyport, and what a lovely surprise it was! This bakery has such a great and unique selection of whoopie pies and everyone is sure to find a flavor they'll love. I got a hot chocolate and a Boston creme whoopie pie and both were very delicious. The bakery was very busy at the time I was there and I did not find a seat, even as just one person. Luckily the building it's in has other seating which I found to be nicer and quieter than eating in the bakery. I will also say that the flow of the bakery is confusing. After walking in the door, you have to walk through most of the space to get in line, and then stand at the bar, in between seats to get any drinks you ordered. It wasn't too bad, but definitely felt a bit odd to me which was the main reason for 4 stars instead of 5. read more

While walking through the Tannery Marketplace the smell of chocolate and baking was too good to pass up . The store had several customers, which gave us time to browse. Whoopie pies were their specialty. They had at least twelve different options, so hard to decide. We decided on salted caramel, raspberry and chocolate ganache. The service was so good, kind, patient and down to earth. So far, we only tried the salted caramel ( notice it is not in the picture..) and it was so good. Moist and delicious. Ordered a bacon quiche which had an expiration date of tomorrow on it and there were others in the case with an expiration 6 days out. Makes me wonder how long they store food in the case before selling. Isn't the point of a bakery to be... I don't know... Fresh? The quiche was about the size of my palm (and I have small hands) and was a whopping $9.62. Worse part? It just wasn't even good. It was tasteless, oily and maybe I'm getting the stale, several days old experience? Ugh. Shame to waste stomach space on things that aren't even baseline fine. read more

I went on a Sunday and found this place by accident when I was visiting the farmers market. I was pleasantly surprised that there was live music! I sampled the whole wheat raspberry scone (if you like a healthier option), cranberry orange scone, and a phenomenal bran muffin with dried fruit! I need to go back to try the coffee. read more

I've always received excellent service at Chococoa. I recently learned that they buy their croissants directly from Paris France. They always taste really good. A small group of us decided on dessert & coffee here today. I really don't want to focus on the negatives, but other than the beverages - mostly coffee each of us found the baked goods stale or just not good. I ordered a scone which was more of a pastry than any scone I've had before. It lacked substance, just crumbling and an off taste. I decided to just push it aside and enjoy my black house blend ( hot) which was excellent. Not customer friendly! Like others said, there is no way to know the prices of items on display. So, I experienced sticker shock when the total was rung up. Customers have to face embarrassment asking the counter staff for individual prices and stand there publicly while they look up the price. Baked items were O.K. I am not sure if they are homemade or not. It was the cost secrecy and the way the woman who seemed to own the place, treated the young people behind the counter by scolding them. Any place that does not list its' prices or pricing policy ANYWHERE, as this bakery doesn't, is one, inconvenient and two suspicious. It is rude to the customer to not be given basic information and to be put in a position to have to ask or to be surprised at the register. C'mon this is just common curtesy. Unfortunately the whoopee pies are almost always cold and hard, due to the idea of baking them ahead of time and then freezing them. Not a good choice. Forget about the gluten free scones . . . . they're as dry as dry can be and they are tasteless. I live near here and come in sometimes when I am downtown. While the baristas are very pleasant, the owners seem to constantly put and talk down to employees. I used to get my daily coffee here. Prices seemed to be going up a lot ( this is happening everywhere) so I go less often.Last trip, I got a large latte. It was $6.83!!! I had given my normal tip $2.00 so a coffee with tip was nearly nine bucks. You lost me. I'm going elsewhere. Like the shop, but your prices are ridiculous. And I had stopped getting your chocolate croissants because they are often stale. Please make some changes. I'd love to come back as you have a great staff and nice location. But I don't know ANYONE who can pay that much for coffee. It's just bad business. Even if I was someone who sat in a coffeeshop working, I'd still hesitate before paying that much. And there's no way, I'd buy the coffee without tipping. I'd suggest losing the large selection of baked good and only offering ones that are fresh. You may have seen Chococoa's Whoopie Pies around town. They're the two bite whoopies that come in packages of three. They have the delicious vanilla, outstanding mocha, and... pumpkin. Yep, pumpkin. WHOOPIES: The past two weekends I attended different events where I was supposed to bring dessert, and both times I ordered a box of assorted whoopie pies. Two things - first, I did not really like whoopie pies before I tried the Chococoa version. These. Are. Outstanding. Second, I might as well stop baking and just pick up some whoopies when I need dessert for something. They are so much better than anything I could make myself. And pretty. MUFFINS & SCONES: The muffins (my favorite is the bran, they also have blue and other berry varieties as well as tasty savory muffins) and scones (blueberry, apricot, and others) are definitely worth a try. They are moist but not too cakey, and solid but not too heavy. And so much flavor. VARIETY: It's a small bakery, but there are a lot of choices. When I was in this morning, there were various muffins, scones, breakfast/coffee rolls and cakes, stuffed croissants, cookies and brownies, dessert cakes, cupcakes, petits fours, and, of course, whoopies. Finally, it must be said that the owners are among the world's nicest people. I go to Chococoa just about every Friday or Saturday morning to grab a bran muffin and a cup of coffee - they serve Atomic Cafe coffee including the dark roast "Diesel," which is reason enough to stop in. While we have a friendly chat about a variety of neighborly topics, they warm up my travel mug with a little hot water before pouring in the Diesel. It's a small touch, and it says so much about the kind of service they provide. If you live in Newburyport and have not tried Chococoa yet, I think you are missing out. They have some solid gluten-free options and offer a nice, homey atmosphere in a solid location (Newburyport's second downtown, The Tannery). They make their pies on-site and you can peak into the kitchen area which is a nice touch. They take their pies very seriously here and it shows, though I have to agree with some of the other reviewers in that they are slightly on the dry side (this could be done on purpose for a longer shelf life or just that gluten free baking results in a drier product?). I don't know, all I know is the coffee is good and my kid's love the pies. Things are a little on the pricey side, but hey dude, you're in the Port! Also, they didn't used to be opposed to slackers hanging out and reading the free papers for hours on end while nursing their small regular, but that policy appears to have changed as last week I saw the owner personally bludgeon a deadbeat chair-hog to within an inch of his life with a porcelain serving tray. We purchased a dozen Whoopie Pies yesterday from the Cafe. They looked very fresh in the case with a great selection but the person behind the counter went out back and came back with our order. We were excited to have a taste when we got to the car but very disappointed to find they were partially frozen. I see that this is the recommended way to store but we intended to eat most (or all) that evening. They did taste great but would have been very embarrassed if we had brought these to guests to serve cold whoopie pies. read more

Mouth watering selection of small whoopie pies. You won't feel too guilty eating a few at once. We wandered in after they had closed (didn't realize til we left and saw the hours on the door - oops) and they were still remarkably friendly and helpful. We tried three of the pies - bourbon (yum), Boston creme (again, yum) and the winner chocolate ganache. So much choice that it was hard to pick just three. We also ordered an iced mocha which was fabulous and had a great amount of caffeine and wasn't too sweet. Finally, I bought some anadama bread and they even sliced it for me. Staff is the best! First time in today and when I asked about savory breakfast options, the woman at the register came around the counter and took the time to share the options with me. They accommodated everyone of my requests (like heating up the breakfast, having my cappuccino in a mug) and were just very welcoming. Spinach Feta Croissant was delicious and cappuccino was great. I've been visiting Chococoa since they first opened their tiny shop in Newburyport. Many whoopie flavors later, my favorites are still the classic and the pumpkin with ginger cream. Alan or Julie always welcome you when you walk in, and the smell is amazing; a very rich chocolate and a hint of coffee. They package everything with care and support other local businesses and events and always stop to chat with you. (Though I guess shame on me for grabbing the address from here, and not double-checking their actual website). They are now located in the Tannery. This place was just ok - maybe I just built it up too much in my head in advance. I had a feta-spinach croissant; it wasn't bad, but I've definitely had a better version from a bakery on the Cape (Pie In the Sky), the dough seemed wrong (not light/flaky enough - not saying they use Pilsbury, but that's what it made me think of). My husband had a savory scone - he seemed pretty happy with it; I had a bite and it was decent - pretty moist, good flavor. Iced chai was decent. The staff were super-nice. Would consider going back for a dessert-treat if I was in the area again, but definitely won't be making a trek specifically for this place. read more

I love this bakery. The Whoopie Pies are divine, especially the salted caramel cream pies. Their other pastries are also excellent. I love their chocolate croissants (and I'm picky about croissants) and their ginger lemon scones....usually I don't like scones but these scones have a nice balance of light and fluffy texture.) I like how they We ordered a coconut cream whoopie, which came cold due to the fridge, but tasty. It almost felt like we were eating a bite-size cupcake.
