I'm grateful: in the past I've found it hard locating just a nice restaurant in Newburyport with merely one vegan dish on the menu. But my very carnivorous significant other loved this place! We had a garbanzo stew with Japanese yam and asparagus. "Exotic comfort food" my SO called it. Flavorful but subtle, filling, but not on account of any filler. Anthony Bourdain may have have caste shade on veganism, but he'd have approved a restaurant like this offering just three options, but doing them to perfection. At least while we were there the place had a staff of one, a perfectly lovely women and prepare and served our food, which came very fast, and even brought us some complementary herb tea (ginger, lemon, maple syrup) and cornbread. We each had a yummie cookie for dessert. The decor is simple but simultaneously elegant and homey, with the kitchen in the center of the eating space, the preparation for all to see. This was my first time going here and it was very disappointing to see only one meal option for the whole restaurant!! Then when it got served it was literally just beans, brown rice and about a half cup of lettuce for $8!! We all left hungry and felt like we have been scammed. Absolutely divine. A small menu which changes daily, so each choice is made perfectly. We were lucky enough to attend a dinner concert here one evening in this cozy space and were made to feel like family. Each dish was creative and tasty and came out at just the right pace. Daily bowls are good but skip the juices - they are some of the priciest I've seen, especially as they're made with an off-the-shelf centrifugal juicer instead of a cold-press machine (like they have at the other organic place in the Tannery). I have eaten at mandarava at least twice and I have visited around 6-7 times. When I ate there I enjoyed the food very much as it aligns with my simplistic but healthy diet. Unfortunately due to my nut allergy, I have not been able to eat there since I had been in the fall. The first few times I felt they were accommodating to my allergy, but ever since they have not been. In fact they seem annoyed that I come in to ask if there is anything without nuts at all. For a restaurant that prides themselves on bringing joy to people's lives through healthy food, they should think more about the broader audience.
