If you're going to go hit up a tourist spot biergarten in Munich, this was a thoroughly enjoyable one. A good selection of foods that you get to choose from cafeteria-style and everything tasted competently done. Deposit is now 2 euros for beer steins, but it's pretty easy to get back. The Chinesischer Turm beer garden is located in the English Garden. It got its name from the Chinese looking pagoda-like tower. When we got there, we went to grab a tray and walked around looking at the food options. We had currywurst with fries, sauerkraut, and watermelon. I enjoyed the food overall. I wished I had mayo on the fries though. I did have some trouble communicating what I wanted to order with the workers. If you order beer, you are given a token. Later, you return the mug with the token to get 1 euro back. I enjoyed my time here. It's a great place to hang out, while eating and drinking. read more

It's s standard beer garden with standard beer garden food. The playground is nice. Easy enough to get to by public transportation. I didn't find it as amazing as everyone claimed it would be, but it was nice to sit and relax for a bit while my kid played. read more

Why can't we have cool things like this in America? A Chinese Tower in the middle of an English Garden, within a Germany city...love it! (I guess us Americans can't handle this much awesomeness without screwing it up(ie. douchebags, thieves)) Its a beautiful outdoor atmosphere with a nice outdoor cafeteria selling good affordable traditional German food. Beers are from €3-8 each depending size and type. We were here on a Friday afternoon in September, so no live band, but that would've made it awesome. Otherwise its a nice place to relax, eat, and drink. You'll want to show up hungry and thirsty :) Complaint: there are supposedly about 6000 seating spots...I wish there was a designated non-smoking area. Instead you're playing musical chairs trying to find the best spot away from the smokers...but that's Europe. Travel Tip: Its gonna be a good walk to get here from any U-Bahn station. This was my first visit to the Englishergarten in the winter, so it was a beautiful walk to the holiday market. The snow falling on the Chinesisher Turm (Chinese Tower) was particularly lovely. Similar to the other reviewer, this market had the most family-friendly vibe and activities of those I've visited (roughly ten in Munich). There were also wide, smooth paths that allowed parents to push strollers and allowed owners to walk their dogs through the market. A horse-drawn buggy, as well as a larger wagon, was available for rides. There were also two craft huts for the kids that translated to Grandma's (Oma) house and Grandpa's (Opa) house. The rest of the food, drink and craft offerings were similar to the other markets in town. So highly recommended for families and those that want to enjoy a lovely walk in the park followed by some Glühwein to warm you up before heading back to town. read more

I would give this biergarten 100 stars if I could! We spent a beautiful, warm, sunny Sunday afternoon here along with what appeared to be most of Munich. They claim to have 7000 seats and every one was filled. Despite the crowds the beer lines moved quickly and efficiently (love you, Germany!!). We listened to music from a big brass band, drank delicious beers from giant mugs and had good conversation with various table mates. I can't imagine a better way to spend my last afternoon in Munich! read more

We really enjoyed this Beer Garden. First of all, the park is gorgeous. There is plenty of seating, especially if you don't mind sharing a table. We didn't encounter any trouble getting our food and drinks. We got our food, then our drinks, then we paid. Easy Peasy. The food was actually really good. I really enjoyed the Roasted Chicken and my husband had the Pork Shank which was really good as well. They sell tomatoes & mozzarella by weight, and that was my side. Husband had some potatoes with his shank. We found the prices to be reasonable. There were a several tourists as well as many locals. So I wouldn't quite label it as a tourist trap. Just a nice stop to get a bite and drink in a gorgeous park. Don't forget to return your mug for your euro. read more

Before I get into depth, two words: tourist trap. While this may be a beer garden in Munich, it's a bit chaotic to grab your food. Getting in line is not as orderly as you think as you pray that no one accidentally shoves into you when you're holding a cafeteria tray full of food with a liter of beer. The line for us to pay and check out was held up by some angry customer who was complaining nonstop about the food and it didn't help that the line was getting more cramped. Not good when you have to hold a tray of food and beer. As for the food, I really wanted to like the pork shank and bratwürst, but it was disappointing. The shank was too salty and the bratwürst was okay. The potato salad was good, but that was it. Definitely caters to more of a tourist's taste rather than a native's taste. There are much better(and less crowded aka non tourist traps) beer gardens if you do a bit of researching. If you want, look at one of my recent reviews for another beer garden. read more

Three nations represented here. You have a large German biergarten surrounding a Chinese temple within the English Gardens. How this happened beats the heck out of me. I guess I forgot to read the informational plaque. The English Gardens did provide a beautiful and serene backdrop on a warm and clear day in Munich at this outdoor biergarten. The oompah band provided the tunes and played their heavy brass instruments from inside the Chinese temple. A number of food items to choose from, mainly deep fried pig parts, but not much for the health conscious. The beer is Hofbräuhaus in half liter and full liter steins. When you purchase a beer you actually pay 2€ more than the cost of the beer and receive a token as a deposit for the stein. You'll get your deposit back once you return your, hopefully, empty stein. Don't waste beer, it's worse than littering. read more

Gorgeous biergarten in my favourite park in Munich the Englischgarten :-) Although I have walked and cycled by this place on numerous occasions, I have never stopped here for an evening. And that changed today :-)) A friend of mine suggested we meet here for a drink this evening and I am so glad he did ;-) There is a "biergarten" and a "restaurant" so you can have the self service option or the one with waiters. The menus are also slightly different and some of the choices for food in the biergarten are not on the restaurant menu and vice versa. We chose the restaurant option as there was a ton of people in the biergarten and neither of us wanted to queue up for the food and drink. I suspect there was bout 2-3000 people there tonight. The bier of course is great and that goes without saying and the food was also quite good. I had a Matjesfilet (called virgin herring sometimes) main that came with Speckbhoben and Bratkartoffle and it was excellent. Nice salty fish with a lovely bean and ham dish along with pan fried potatoes. My friend had the Schwinebraten and we both had cleaned our plate out. The service was good and quick and the wait staff were quite friendly. All in all a fabulous experience and one that I hope to repeat a lot this summer :-) read more

This place is located right in the middle of the beautiful Englischer Garten. Whenever I go there, I always have a wonderful experience. Even when the weather is not that perfect, it still is great, because the sun also shines inside the people there. The band playing typical songs, people dancing, talking, drinking, and having fun. With all this joy around you, it is easy to get into the same vibe and have a great time there. And you can always borrow some happiness from the tables beside you, if you are feeling a bit down. Of course, they have the typical German/Bavarian dishes which are very tasty but not particularly cheap. If you are a vegetarian, there are many options from which you can choose. If nothing they offer suits you, you can always bring your own food. Obviously, they offer great beer there: it is a "beer garden"! The standard beer mug sizes are 1 and 0.5 Liter. Besides the regular helles Bier (light beer), they also offer Weißbier (wheat beer), Radler (half beer half lemonade), and soft drinks. All of this contributes to create a delightful atmosphere, where people are more open to socialize, talk and get to know each other. If you are not a native German speaker, you can use this opportunity to practice your German language skills. For instance, my German is far from perfect but I always meet friendly people willing to have a nice conversation, such as, groups of friends, couples, old ladies and tourists from other parts of Germany. I really think it does not get better than this: fun music, great food, delicious bier, friendly people, and the beautiful nature around you. read more

What a cool spot! We rented a few bikes to ride through the English Garden, and we've heard about the Chinese Tower. We didn't expect too much but man, once we got there, we had to get a beer at the beer garden. The pagoda/tower is nothing fancy, and it is a bit random how it is just in the middle of the garden, but still cool to see. At the beer garden, you walk to the section where they sell food and drinks and pay when you leave. It's a good system since you pay an extra 2 Euros for the steins, and when you bring it back, they return the deposit. We just decided to keep our small Hofbrau stein as a souvenir haha. We didn't get any of the food, but a lot of people did. Looked like some people were also pre-gaming before heading off to Oktobefest so it was quite rowdy. Just a really cool place to relax and have a beer! read more

This place is as worthing reviewing as it is cliche to do so. Located smack in the middle of the English Gardens, Chinesischer Turm (Chinese Tower) is probably the best beer garden in Munich. Why? First of all, its secluded and as such the people who are here are all gathered to do one thing. Chill. No nonsense, no distractions. Just a simple beer garden in one of the most beautiful spots in the city. I mean, even the walk to get here is lovely; approaching from the part of town we stayed in had us cross two crystal clear mini rivers and walk through a little forrest. The sun was shining, the kids were playing with their dogs...you get the picture. As you get closer, there is no mistaking you are in the right spot. There is a rather large tower that looks like, you can walk up it. Don't get excited; unless you're part of the polka band, you're not going up. You can however go into the food and beer court next to it, order a sausage with fries and a liter of beer for a relatively decent price (sausage and fries were around 6 Euro, liter of hells beer was close to 8). Just next to the huge liter pours, they do sell half liters, if you're into that sort of thing... Come here to lounge in the sun and listen to polka music on a nice day as you slowly slip into inebriation on beer that would cost you twice as much in New York. read more

Pure chaos. I dare you to throw yourself into the lion's den aka where you're supposed to grab your drank and food. You'd think there would be some orderly line passing through the cafeteria-style food/drink area. But no. You wander around willy-nilly, from the potato bar to the beer section back to the salad spot, trying not to get shoved or even worse, drop your refreshing jumbo beer and perfectly salted jumbo pretzel. Once you manage to pay your dues and make it out alive with your plastic cafeteria tray, take down a large glug of beer, followed by an huge bite of pretzel and another glug of beer. Trust me, you'll feel a lot better because that s*** was stressful. And then take another swig of beer after realizing just how much you spent on the food and beer precariously balanced on that plastic tray of yours. Overall the food and beer is decent, plus it's nice to sit outside on a sunny day. Perhaps try this spot once (if you're the adventurous sort) or skip it entirely if you're like me and sprout a new gray hair for every stressful situation encountered. This Biergarten should be on your must-visit list while in Munich. It is accessible from the edge of the Englisher Garden. We took a 5 minute bus ride from the closest S-bahn station. There are tons of communal tables, and plenty of beer stands. There is a small buffet-style food area where you can load up your plate with meat, potatoes, sweets and beer to your hearts content. Be sure to try the pan-fried German potatoes, Bratkartoffeln. Those were the highlight of my meal. We sat outside here for a few hours indulging in the hearty food and beers larger than our heads while listening to the live band play from inside the Chinese Tower. An awesome place to spend an afternoon! Conveniently located in one of the world's largest inner-city parks, this is a good change of pace on a sunny day from the traditional beer halls. Instead of being served here, you wait in a log assembly style line, and grab your beer first. As you make your way down the line you can grab a good variety of salads, soups, meats, and breads. You pay at a cashier and grab a seat at any of the numerous tables in the shade or sun. The reason I knocked it one star might be picky, but it is because I heard way too much English being spoken out here. I'm not sure if there was a large tour group when I went, but it kinda ruined the German drinking experience. But then again, if that is my biggest complaint, things could be worse! read more

Just above the packed beer garden is a quieter, classier and pricier restaurant that serves a combo of both time-honoured traditional Bavarian fare as well as more modern and international dishes. The vibe is a mix between a Parisian brasserie and a traditional beer garden (interesting, but great combo!) The ambience was perfect on the terrace, which overlooks the Chinese Tower. Touristy albeit, but perfect for a visitor to the city. Service was prompt and friendly, with multiple waiters taking care of each table. We had the käsespätzle and crispy roast pork and dumplings. Both were excellent, the pork insanely tender and flavourful; portion sizes perfect for the price (and not overwhelming like some of these beer gardens can be). Dessert was the highlight. They have a series of mini-desserts outlined on well-done little French menus, each 2.50, each amazing. My favourite was a coconut panna cotta done with passion fruit and pineapple. All round, excellent! Go for a stroll along the river afterwards and enjoy the park! read more

I'm not sure if you would call the Chinese Pagoda Pavilion a restaurant - but I am reviewing the more casual spot of the Biergarten - and it is pretty much a picture perfect way to pass a warm sunny afternoon basking in a sun filled and strategically shaded area with decent food and drink. This place is located right in the middle of English Garden, and it is about a 10-15 easy wander from the edges of the park, where you can ramble pass the single surfing spot in Munich and pass the Japanese Tea Pavillion in the south end. I wouldn't worry too much about seating since there is a whopping 6000 seats open to you on communal picnic benches and tables. You can BYOF to eat, rather than shelling out for food at the food stalls set out on the outer edges of the pavilion. The beer here is on rotation by most of the major beer producers here in Munich. Because the tables are communal, your best bet is to see if there is enough spots for your party and plunk yourself down. You will be sitting elbow to elbow with other people, but I think it one of the best ways to soak up such a chillaxed atmosphere and soak in the Oompah band that usually performs inside the pagoda. You can't enter the pagoda 2nd floor, but the band is usually loud enough to hear them from anywhere in the open seating area. read more

Started off by getting a big pork shank, plate of fried potatoes, and a 1/2 liter of Hofbrauhaus beer for like 15 euros. Huge portion of food and tasty. Stuck around for another couple of beers. Remember to return the little green token with your glass/stein to get your 1 Euro deposit back. It's a touristy place but nice. Tons of tables under the trees, nice gardens, cool Chinese temple. 1st level of temple is packed with patrons. German brass band playing on the 2nd level. In true German style I, ahem, indulged in some drinking here last night, thanks to my boyfriend's affinity for those giant, giant glass mugs of beer. I think we had 6 of them. I can't believe that. Remember to turn in your glasses to get your euros back! It's not super cheap or anything like that, but the food and drinks come in huge serving sizes and then you get to sit in an atmosphere of indulgent drinking all around! Into our 3rd and 4th beer mugs, we suddenly discovered that the people around us were awesome, and we made friends and they got really drunk with us too!
