Viktualienmarkt Biergarten was easily my favorite beer garden in Munich. Even after being back in the US, I still find myself missing the beer here! You can order a variety of beers and honestly, you can't go wrong. We often grabbed a Leberkäse sandwich from one of the hundreds of food stalls around Viktualienmarkt and brought it back to the beer garden to enjoy with our beers. Such a simple combination, but absolutely perfect. Service at the beer stand is super quick, though keep in mind it's cash only. The atmosphere is unbeatable. Sitting under the shady trees at communal tables, sharing space with locals and travelers, and striking up random conversations with people around you is exactly what makes this place special. It's a great spot to meet new people, relax, and enjoy a cold Bavarian beer. If you're in Munich, this is a must-visit. One of those places I wish I could teleport back to! read more

My wife and I were in Munich for five days and we decided to visit this beer garden near the main square. The service at the beer stand I went to was terrible as I didn't understand German and he shouted at me 5.50! They were serving plenty of beer and the outside garden was pretty nice. I wouldn't go here again as there are plenty of beer places all over the city. Water is as expensive as beer there, it is crazy! We loved the vibe of this place, lots going on but feels cozy at the same time. The beer was very good. We liked the food, pretzel is served cold and without dipping sauce which we didn't love. The spatzle was yummy and so were the pork knuckles. The service was not so good as our waiter had a friend there and it was a struggle to get assistance. This place is awesome! Great vibe and excellent service. We were greeted with a smile and able to get excellent food and drink. Our server really made this the best time he was so energetic and happy. Highly recommend if you are looking to drink and be merry. The food: We got the cheese and pretzel and added 4 pretzels. This worked out well because the cheese serving was so generous. I would have liked if the pretzels came out warm, but they still tasted perfect with our steins of beer. read more

Stopped by the Viktualien market but was pretty much all closed up. Not realizing it was a Christian holiday, Ascension day, here in Germany we were unable to experience the famous market. However, the Biergarten was in full effect! Locals in traditional trachten and plain clothes alike had flocked to this central watering hole and were partying up. The vibe was semi electric and everyone was in a positive mood. The traditional brass band was playing German music and local food and beers were a plenty. We had two Local bottled heffewiessens poured into mugs and for a mid afternoon snack we grabbed a few sausages. I opted for the cheesy Kaisenbratwurst. My son went with the Bratwurst special which is a foot (or more) long brat with saurkraut and fried onions topped with mustard. The ambiance was epic. read more

The Biergarten Am Viktualienmarkt was at the top of my list of places to go while in Munich. The Biergarten is right in the middle of Viktualienmarkt and there is pretty much no way to miss it. I am not too proud to say that I first found out about Viktualienmarkt from watching Rick Steve's show and really wanted a beer and pretzel here. We looked around for a bit and decided to get a light beer and the giant pretzel. Both were fairly inexpensive and very yummy. Looking for a place to sit was interesting. There are several tables for waiter service but if you want to go get food yourself and sit down, there aren't as many options. We ended up finding a picnic style table with some other nice people. Two of the people we met were actually from the US who were in the military and stationed just a few hours away. We had a nice chat, they told us about life in Germany and we enjoyed the scenery. This is a great place to stop and have a bite to eat, a beer to enjoy and to meet people from all over the world. What a great experience! read more

A must see when you sightsee in Marienplatz. The produce is similar and different from what we are familiar with. We were there during mushroom harvest. Mushrooms stands were busy. Breads, cheeses and wines galore. Souvenirs, too. One stand offers wine tastings paired with cheeses. We got salads from the Mediterranean stand and took them to the Biergarten there. Nice beer garden in the center of the market. There are both self serve tables as well as service tables. It gets pretty packed and the people watching is excellent. We just had some beers which rotate through the major breweries every day or every week. It's definitely a good stop. read more

I am a self-proclaimed Vodka Vixen. Yet when in Rome (or in this case Munich) you drink beer, eat sausage and munch on the best fucking pretzels on the planet. It was a late afternoon and we were starving. Our drive from Austria produced no snacking opportunities so we were pleased to find this biergarten just a few short steps from our hotel. It's January and it was freezing, but we both loved the inviting snuggle factor that it had to offer. As mentioned, the weather was cold as were the many beers. But the warm crunch pretzel along with the perfectly grilled sausages warmed our hearts and filled our bellies. Come hungry, come thirsty. read more

For the most part, Munich as a city is a giant beiergarten. Not only does it seem like there's a place to purchase pilsners the size of a Fiat in any direction you look, but you're also allowed to buy bottled beer and walk around in public drinking without fear of being ticketed by police. It's like being on The Strip in Vegas... but in this case the entire city of München is The Strip. That being said, if I were a local, Viktualienmarkt would surely be my gathering place of choice. Located just off the beaten path and consisting mostly of locals, Viktualienmarkt is a sprawling biergarten with picnic tables as far as the eye can see complete with groups of friends and strangers cohabitating in perfect harmony. The only thing stopping me from making heaps of new friends was my language barrier, but you can just feel how happy and free people are here. It's just a real fun spot and the energy is quite infectious. The Bavarian pretzel left a little to be desired, but it was also towards the end of the night so perhaps I got an older offering. Still, a bad pretzel in Bavarian trumps almost every other pretzel I've had stateside to date. A quick word to the wise - if you're a guy and they ask you at the beer counter "small or large," respond with "large" unless you want people to make fun of your baby sized beer. I learned the hard way - but it was all in good fun. read more

If you are a visitor to Munich you will invariably get here. It's part of the Viktualienmarkt and hard to miss. I have been here a few times mostly with visitors. As far as Biergartens are concerned this is nothing special and I much prefer other ones in town. It's ok once in a while and your food choices are good, as there are tons of food places around you, where you can get all sorts of things, from sausages to full on meals. read more

Fun place to have a beer and a light meal after sightseeing in Munich or shopping in the food market. Seating was full up most times we stopped by, but if you're patient and wait a few minutes you'll definitely find somewhere to sit. The atmosphere is pretty relaxed and jovial and you can be sure that some locals will start chatting you up after a few minutes of speaking in English. Food and beer quality was superb. I guess this beer garden can be considered a bit touristy, but I still consider it to be one of my favorite outdoor spots in Munich. read more

When in Munich, you drink bier, lots of it. Some co-workers and I came here after dinner last night, grabbed some beers, and hung out for an hour or so. The outdoor space was large, with tons of seating, and various food stalls scattered about. Definitely a decent place to kick it. read more

It comes handy that the Viktualienmarkt also has a small Beer Garden where you can take a break after intense sightseeing. The served brand of beer changes from week to week. Lucky you if you DON'T have to catch inferior Löwenbräu because Bavaria has much better brands than the well-known exported version. Marienplatz may be the civic center of Munich, but the Viktualienmarkt - just a few steps away - is the spiritual center of Munich. I cannot think of a better place to sit with a beer and watch locals and tourists alike enjoy this great city. They rotate between the six major Munich breweries, so you can return regularly and still taste a variety of brews. The prices are surprisingly reasonable, despite the central location. This tends to be the case throughout Germany, a practice that I wish US businesses would adopt. Tip: The tables with tablecloths are serviced. Those without are self-service and the food & drink less expensive (because there is no service charge). read more

We had just finished a walking tour of Munich, and were ready for dinner. We decided to stroll through this area and find some food, then sit in the beer garden to get the local flavor. After perusing several delicious looking stands, we found some great looking bratwurst and pretzels, then headed over to the beer garden. One section is for those ordering food, the other section is for those just drinking beer (and bringing your own food). We found some seats at a table (which wasn't easy as it was very crowded) then headed over to the hut in the middle where you could buy beer. The beer was quite an automated line - they were filling up mugs and sliding them out and you grabbed one and then went down the line to the cashier and paid (in cash) and headed for your table. It was fast, and not much selection - regular beer or the dark was your only choice. It was fun to experience it, but it wasn't as relaxing as I imagined it to be to be honest. I would visit the area again though, especially if I had more time to shop! read more

We were here in the middle of January and stopped by after a walking tour. It was a strange day- 55 degrees and sunny! The beer garden was not only open, it was very busy. It was easy to walk up, grab beer, pay the guy and look for a place to sit down. It seemed like a nice place to enjoy some food and drink for a while.
