This old Munich brewery was highly recommended to us by our local hotel staff. Still touristic, but much less so and so vast that each area you went into had a different vibe. We actually came two days in a row because we saw the following day was going to offer blood sausage. Unfortunately, they ran out in the early afternoon so we didn't get to have it. On our first day, our waitress was incredibly attentive and we really enjoyed our sharing platter of sausages and sides. We all got a different beer to try and all were equally delicious. We loved the interior with its dark wooden beams. On our second day as mentioned, the food we had wanted to eat was out, so we only ordered drinks which seemed to have disappointed our waitress. We also felt like service was much less attentive so the second time we went wasn't as great of an experience, but nevertheless, we enjoyed our drinks. We definitely still recommend visiting this spot while you're in Munich. It's definitely a must do as it's one of the six main breweries from Munich. They had a really beautiful garden outside that looked absolutely magical, but was only open on good weather days. read more

In our two-plus weeks of travel, we only stopped at one establishment twice. That was Zum Augustiner. The food is good, yes. And the beer was better than other places, sure. But really, it was the fact that we were able to find a table in the busy dining hall on both nights, and that we had a good array of food options in front of us. On our first night there, I went with the Grilled Pike Perch fillets, which came with a green salad and buttered potatoes. My beer selection for the evening was the Dunkel. My husband went with the Creamed Ox Goulash and a pint of an Edelstoff. I gotta tell you - I wasn't prepared for how much I loved the food here. I really got the fish because it promised a green salad (I was a little porked-out by that point), and because the fish sounded like a nice, light meal. The fish came out first, and my heart sunk, thinking that the smattering of greens on my plate were what they were referring to when they said "salad", but our waiter let me know he was coming back with the potatoes and the salad. That green salad, though! I don't know what they put in it, other than some fresh greens and vegetables, but there was a slight creaminess and tartness to the dressing that I absolutely loved. The fish was delightful, as well. It was light and flaky, and they didn't de-bone the filet before serving. My husband enjoyed his goulash, but it wasn't his favorite meal, either. He said the ox meat was too gamey, and though he loved the cranberry-like side and the creamy mushrooms, it wasn't enough to balance the gamey flavor of the ox meat. Our second visit, we found another small table and were greeted right away. I contemplated getting the fish again, but decided to try something different. I went with the 1/2 Bavarian chicken - because it also came with a salad. I couldn't leave without having that salad again! My husband got the 1/2 shank of pork, which came with a dumpling and a white cabbage salad. We both ordered the Dunkel to round out our meal. The chicken was delightful, with a crispy skin and juicy, flavorful meat. (And did I mention that salad? Who goes to Bavaria and falls in love with a garden salad? This girl!) My husband really liked the pork shank, but found it a bit difficult to eat, without splashing the gravy everywhere. They got an insane crunch on the pork skin, which my husband delighted in eating. He made short work of the shank, and ate most of the white cabbage salad, but couldn't finish the bread dumpling. It was too dense for him. Our waiters on both nights were friendly and attentive, without being too much in our business. We never had to ask for refills, and they stopped by to check on us as the meal wore on. It's really no surprise we dined here twice on our short stay in Munich. read more

This Augustiner is a beautiful, historical Bavarian restaurant and beerhall conveniently located near Marienplatz. It's absolutely worth a stop for the Munich tourist, even if it's just to walk through and observe the beautiful interior, back courtyard and massive traditional beerhall areas. The outside of the building is beautiful and the interior is stunning. And the beer is great! (Stop in for an Augustiner beer if nothing else.) We were there for dinner and were seated inside in one of the smaller, beautiful rooms adorned by shell mosaics on the walls and and a beautiful high ceiling. The menu is available in multiple languages, including the specials menu. Augustiner brews some of the most popular beers in Germany and Austria (some would say the best), so of course we ordered that first!!! You really can't go wrong with any of their choices. I loved my Augustiner Weissbier. Our table of five ordered a variety of German dishes for dinner, including sausages, veal meatballs, roasted pork and mushroom "ravioli". Several were from the specials menu and might only be seasonal. The ravioli was delicate and delicious, and the mushroom sauce outstanding. The sausage platter was a great way to sample the variety of sausages made in the area (really good if you like sausage) and it comes with the largest crock of mustard I've ever seen. My dad and nephew liked the meatball and said it was similar to the German meatloaf they'd had at a nearby beer garden. The roasted pork was tender and good. If you're looking for spice or heat though, Bavarian food is not for you. You will find it bland. Portion sizes were large and prices were comparable for this area of Munich. Definitely more $ than in the US, but we found all food and beer to be much pricier. Dinner for five, plus five beers, one wine and three cokes came to $155 USD. Service was friendly, but not very attentive. Our waiter was tied up a lot by a table of about 15 also eating. Overall, the Augustiner is a winner. If not for dinner, an American tourist will still massively enjoy the beauty of the building inside and out, be impressed by the massiveness of the beerhall areas, and the charm of the back garden patio. A little bit pricey but with good and friendly service (a waiter who doesn't get rude when asking to pay by card in Germany is not too common unfortunately) and food is spot on. I had one of the dishes of the day, meatballs of veal with mashed potatoes and vegetables, with a weissbier for less than EUR 17. He had some type of meatloaf (did not look like American meat loaf but tasted good) and I had some sausages, sauerkraut and french fries. Everything was good and I have to say, although I dislike sauerkraut, I ate it all because it was so delicious. Maybe I've just never had any good stuff. I should start with the most absurd part of this experience. The waitress chased me halfway down Marienplatz because I didn't leave her a tip. Here's a tip for you sweetheart, don't hand me pretzels off someone else's table and tell me here's my food. You're lucky I paid for it at all. Terrible food. I got schnitzel and it was burnt on the back sides. Tasted like stale rancid oil that's been sitting in a frying pan for three days. The french fries were tasty and so was the salad. There was something kind of off about the meat as well. The pork was really gave me and almost tasted like it was starting to spoil. The beer was just about the only thing that didn't suck. Actually the beer was pretty tasty. The waitress seem nice at first but she was super wound up trying to get everybody to hurry up their food and leave even though there were still two hours before closing. I was pretty horrified when she handed me the pretzel from another table they didn't eat one of their two pretzels they bought. Everybody in the area kind a looked at her crazy as if saying "did this really just happen". The decor and vibe of the place is really fun But the weirdo waitress and gross food ruined it. So let me start off with this is the first place we ate when we arrived in Munich. The beer is great. I'm not a beer drinker and this being the first beer I drank in Germany, made me appreciate it and enjoy it. The sausage sampler is a great choice and I loved the sauerkraut that came with it. They have a relaxed outside atmosphere. The waiter though, did not like that we were tourists. He was annoyed when we asked questions about the menu. He told us that the tip was not included in the check multiple times, the proceeded to stand there as we signed the check and stated again that the tip is not included and waited for us to give him one. This Beer Hall has a totally different feel than the Hofbrauhouse. It feels a little older inside with had bench-type seating and an authentic atmosphere. The beer is great - locals say the best in town. The beer garten is in an old courtyard in the back. The place is huge - with as much seating as the Hof. The food is great and reasonably priced, I had the suckling pig which was done perfectly. The Hof is an institution, but it is definitely good to try something different. read more

Overshadowed by hofbrauhaus, this is a must-go in münchen whether or not you're a beer lover! I think their food is better than in hofbrauhaus, and I would say their beer is definitely comparable to the HB beer. I personally got hooked to the radler (beer + light lemonade). The interior feels grand with all the chandeliers, trophies on the wall, and paintings with the style of the 1500s. The pork knuckle and pork shank are very popular here and is worth a try- hearty and satisfying fare. The portion was plenty two people to share. Pretzels were delicious as well. I never thought I'd be an American abroad and wishing the "locals" would keep it down. So much for "loud Americans". We've got nothing on drunk Germans and Brits. Granted I was at Zum Augustiner for dinner during Octoberfest, so I cannot complain too much. There was a table of about a dozen guys behind us, and while I swore they were speaking German at the start, pretty soon I heard them speaking with darn good British accents, or perhaps they were Brits speaking German. Either way, they were over the top loud, singing, hugging all the waiters, taking shots of schnapps, etc. Again, it was Octoberfest, and Lord knows how loud I've been or my group has been. As for the restaurant, it was massive, with a beer hall, lots of old timey ambiance, cold liters of Augustiner beer, and I had a fantastic Schweinshaxe for dinner. Like others have said, I was worried this place might be more expensive given it's great location on a busy main street, but found it to be comparable to all the other beer halls we've been to. Food was great and it's nice to see they have special vegetarian options of the day along with the many meat offerings. I had spinach dumplings (special of the day) which were delicious. I was skeptical about this place looking at it from the outside. This place looked a bit grungy from the outside. Okay, it was in the dark but it had a medival look about the building. But the place was packed. Everyone looked like they were enjoying themselves. We braved it. In we go. This place is humongous!!! I'd only found out afterwards that there's another side to the restaurant from where we were sat. There's also an impressive beer garden outside. We ordered a few dishes to try: we shared the liver dumpling and goulash soup; we ordered 1/2 duck, pork knuckle, veal meatballs and a meat platter (basically more duck and pork). Every dish was as tasty as I'd imagine. To my surprise, the bill was a little short of €100 for 5 of us. We had drinks and dark beer too! So it's not expensive at all. The desserts look delectable. There are easily a dozen choices at the back of the restaurant. We were way too full to have any but I'd be keen to come back for another visit. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Beer tasted good! However I ordered a "Riesenbratwurst" and when eating it I bit something extremely hard and almost broke a tooth. When I pulled it out of my mouth I found it to be a piece of metal which had been hidden in the sausage. Upon this finding I told the waiter about it. If I could give this place a ZERO, I definitely would!!! I sat on my table for about 20 minutes and was hoping, I can try the suckling pork people have been raving about. At least 4 staff passed by me twice and none of them offered to assist or take my order!!! Even when I asked one of them, on how to order - the gentlemen called someone but 5 minutes later, nobody showed up!!! I eventually gave up and left. If you quality service, this is NOT the place. The best Bavarian beer is without a doubt from Augustiner brewery. Any of the Augustiner restaurants in Munich are great, although the Augustiner Keller has a great history and is a good place to mingle with people. Zum Augustiner has been around a long time and their foods are authentic. Some waiters however are not cool with the increase of tourists and treat you like one. The food and atmosphere is why I come here. There is even a picture from Franz Josef, who liked to frequent the place. The pork knuckle is always the best with potato dumplings and kraut. In the summer it's great to go all the way back and mingle in their small beer garden. read more

This is a nice Bavarian style place. I had a few others with me and we all had good meals. Not a 5 and not the 1 others have given. What I think i have found withe Bavarian food is that what you order and what you don't can make a huge difference. Having a German or German wise person in the grou can help you steer to a good meal or a bad one. This place is pretty middle of the road but had all the makings of a good Bavarian place. read more

This was quite the experience for me. The restaurant is a shared seating arrangement that seems to be typical in Bavaria. We visited twice as we liked our first visit so much. Close to the Marienplatz. A bunch of good German food and beer to be found here. The menu does come in English, which is a big help. Once your order is taken, the food comes out pretty quickly, but not all at the same time. The beer is from their own brewery which is I think the oldest one. Ordered too small of one the first time (didn't want a liter for dinner). The food was excellent and I would recommend a look at the specials. read more

A solid beer hall in a city filled with beer halls. Best way to shake off a hangover from Oktoberfest? Hair of the dog -- another stein of beer. The beer is pretty good, though not the best I had in Munich. Food was hit or miss, bratwurst and mashed potatoes were quite good, some of the other food items weren't. The basket of pretzels that come free at your table, however, were very good -- doughy but not dry with a crisp crust outside. Men's bathroom has a vending machine filled with condoms and pocket pussies. Haha! read more

This restaurant is located a few blocks from the Marienplatz. The location is very convenient for tourist as it is close to the major attractions. They have a nice beer garden where you can enjoy a beer and just people watch. We ordered the sausage plate which was very good. We also tried the schnitzel which was just ok, I probably would not order it again. I guess I only enjoy this dish when they serve it with a sauce which was not the case here. I usually think of this place when my out of town guests ask for a "classic Munich place" (especially if there's bad weather and biergartens are closed). For one thing Augustiner is my favorite of the Munich beers. for another - I like how this place always has a good energy level. It's absolutely enormous too - people are amazed at the rabbit-warren of places to sit. The food is OK - big portions of straightforward Bavarian food, nothing creative but reasonably well seasoned. Nothing really great but nothing really sucks, either. Beers though, are great. Service varies - sometimes efficient yet nondescript - sometimes with a bit of personality. I think this is a good mix of accessibility for visitors combined with authenticity of a Munich beer hall. read more
