Beer and elderberry spritz good. Pork schnitzel was juicy and crispy and tender. Clean bathrooms. Areas to improve Ghoulash too salty, not edible. Crispy duck was overly dry and not chewable. Munich, Germany Nope, not every German restaurant-despite serving similar foods, are good. Two stories and crowded on any given day, Der Pschorr has great beer and delicious pumpkin soup. I say this with confidence because the next day we went to another place and had pumpkin soup and it was tasteless. Pumpkin or potato -depends on the season. Beef steak? This is a good spot if you're looking for a casual, Bavarian restaurant and brewery near the old town of Munich. The restaurant is packed during the day, but that's a testament to what the place is, a very Bavarian watering hole with good food. We went for lunch and the place was crowded with locals and tourists (like ourselves) looking for a liter of beer and some hearty Bavarian dishes. I ordered the 1/2 Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) and my wife ordered the Gnocchi (Feine Nocken). Both dishes were filling and delicious! The service was good, though at times chaotic with some miscommunication between the waiters. Because of how busy it was, it did take awhile to get additional rounds of drinks. Stopped by for some German food after being unable to find a table at hofbrauhaus. This place still had reservations open and the restaurant is quite nice. Great decor and atmosphere. The food was pretty good, but nothing astonishing. We're somewhat vegetarian so the options were quite limited - we got the obazada, spaetzle, and the cheese dumplings. The bretzel and obazada were delicious. Spaetzle was basically Mac and cheese, but pretty good. I really enjoyed the dumplings though. Service is a bit slow, and we got a long sphiel about why we should tip the waiter, even before we paid. I can't understand wanting the customer to know, since it's not as common around Europe, but do so when the top box pops up. read more

Overall, I didn't enjoy this one as much as the others I went to, but we still had a good time and I'm glad that we checked it out. We came for dinner on a Saturday night and lucked out with the only available table left. It definitely gets busy, so anticipate at least a 5-10 minute wait if arriving during prime dinner hours. Located right next to Viktualienmarkt, this beer hall is centrally located and convenient to get to. The menu has a lot of great food and drink options. I found the vibes here to be a little more serious and upscale, rather than rowdy. That being said, it was definitely still lively and loud. Service was pretty quick and friendly enough. Finally made it to my first beer in München and we stopped here in the Viktualienmarkt. Busy as Oktoberfest is underway but there were enough seats outside that we got a nice table where we could watch the folks shopping Viktualienmarkt and walking through this busy area. Decent service and they do have an English menu. We got a plate of obatzda (semi-spicy cheese) with bread and pretzels. And we also got beer. Very good beer. Service was spotty but as I learned this week, this is the German way. You'll need to actively flag down your staff for the check and to pay the check. Ideally, carry enough cash so that you can just leave that on the table and go. Stumbled upon this place and was pleasantly surprised. We went on a Sunday afternoon because the market was closed and we were able to find a nice little table outside. There were Oktoberfesters sitting next to us and were drinking and singing so that was very entertaining. We started with a cheese platter that came with jelly spreads and they were very good. Definitely need to share that with 2-4 people because there was a lot. It was supposed to be a mix of hard and soft cheeses, but we got all hard cheeses. Gosh I miss this place. Their food reminded me of a great home-cooked meal made by my grandparents. It was rich and filling and had all the flavors I was craving from a fall dinner in Munich. The menus in English were also extremely helpful! I tried my favorite drink here - prosecco mixed with rhubarb juice (fraenzi mit rhabarbersaft). It was light and bubbly, slightly sweet and so refreshing. I need to find rhubarb juice here at home now! I also had my absolute favorite meal here: hearty beef ragout with the potato pumpkin gnocchi. The beef was minced into such perfect small pieces, the sauce was hearty and robust with flavor, and the gnocchi was the perfect consistency to soak up the juices. I have already tried to make this at home, but I haven't found the recipe yet. This dish was so amazing! My husband and I both loved the skirt steak braised in red wine. The beef was so tender it was falling apart. The vegetables were cooked perfectly alongside it. The potato pumpkin strudel it came with was so rich and savory, I'm sad I had to share it. The finale dish we loved and devoured was the homemade cheese noodles (spatzle). This one was a true delight. The little noodles along with the gooey cheese and roasted onions were just heavenly. This is another dish I will try to make at home, but I sadly know that it will never be the same. We enjoyed every single bite and sip we took here. Der Pschorr is one of the bigger Bavarian restaurant I've been to in Munich so far. It's huge. There's a ton of seating inside and outside. They have an English menu, like most other places. The service was actually nice too. The server I had spoke English quite well. Their menu is extensive. Some places have mostly pork items, but Der Pschorr has a lot of options ranging from pork, beef, veal, and duck. I tried their Beef Liver, which was a special at the time. And I also tried their Goulash. The Beef Liver was done very well. Liver has a distinct taste, and you can't get rid of that. I personally like the taste of liver. It came with salad, mushrooms, and raspberry vinaigrette. All the flavors balanced out the strong liver flavors well. The glouash was just a nice, comforting dish. It had a lot of onions, I liked the roasted bread dumplings it came with. I enjoyed my time here. It's just another good, Bavarian restaurant in Munich. read more

This is a big restaurant located conveniently near Marienplatz with many indoor and outdoor seatings. Due to its location, it had a lot of tourists - but I also saw many locals as well. They serve local Bavarian cuisine and supposedly they have their own cows. The appetizer platter we got included many yummy cheeses and beef tartar. The price of the main dishes can vary from reasonable to expensive. I had the steak / lion but it is on the lean and tough side. I did not see the more "fatty" cuts on the menu The sides were not that spectacular with your ordinary salad bowl and fried potatoes. The warm apple strudel was good and I enjoyed it. Central location. Big hall. Expect to share seating with strangers, it is a hall after all. I sat with a couple of Swiss business women, and had a nice chat with them. The server offered free Prosecco for seating us together, though it wasn't too much trouble. Because it's next to Munich's Viktualien Markt and frequented by tourists, they do offer an English menu. Lovey and hunnie and I were starving when we arrived so we went to Christmas market immediately. Unfortunately most stalls were closed because it was three kings holiday but luckily we found out this place and we immediately walked in. We ordered beef tartare and 1/2 pork knuckle. Good thing I just ordered half. The pork knuckle was huge. If I ordered full it will be 2 pcs. I also had white wine with it and lovey had some English tea. The beef tartare was huge as well. They have English menus and waitress spoke English. The lovey also speaks and reads German fluently (ofcourse he was born and raised here) so either way we have no issues. They have lovely Christmas decorations inside and it was warm and cozy. Little pricey but worth it. Food was better here than Hofbräuhaus. A must stop in Munchen. Trust! read more

This restaurant is worth a stop. It is a little more modern than most of the places that I frequent in Munich, but if you are looking for something that is a little different from the typical Bavarian beer hall, then this is your place. It is still traditional enough, but the menu choices venture away from the standard schnitzel and sausage. The beer, as you can assume, is Hacker Pschorr, which is one of the fine locals. You'll find a slightly more adventurous menu with things like steak tartare that seem a little less German. Service was fine, similar to the standard German service and the restaurant was comfortable with being too uptight, like some of the restaurants that tend to offer the less traditional fare. read more

A great place to people watch. Sitting up on the outside terrace. Try something different like the ox tail or the freshly made steak tartare. Good beers and if you want a smaller size beer that is a freshly drawn beer you can order what the Muncheners call a Schnitt. It will be served in a 500ml glass with lots of head. With a 6.5-hour layover in Munich, I knew I had to get out of the airport even if to just get a small taste of the city. My friend (another Jelena!) lives close to the city center and recommended I take the train to Marienplatz so we could grab lunch and walk around a bit. Exactly what I wanted to do before an 11-hour flight back to San Francisco later that afternoon - stretch my legs, eat something better than typical airport fare, and sneak in some sight-seeing. Apparently, Sunday isn't the best day to experience Munich but my pal suggested we check out Der Pschorr as they were open (yay!) and feature a comprehensive menu with plenty of traditional Bavarian fare and Hacker-Pschorr brews. The restaurant is rather large and bright, and we were quickly led to an upstairs table with a nice view. We both ordered the spaetzle, which was mixed with melted cheese and crispy onions (check out my photo for a visual of the deliciousness!). And talk about a huge portion - I was able to put a pretty decent dent into my plate, but only because I was especially hungry (I hadn't eaten anything for almost 18 hours). Good value considering the portion size and everything tasted quite fresh... the food wasn't revolutionary by any means, but it was tasty and it hit the spot. As for the beer - I've always been a fan of Hacker-Pschorr Weiss and as one would expect, it tasted even better in its birthplace. A lovely lunch that I'd be happy to repeat. read more

A really nice beer house next to the Viktualienmarkt and when the biergarten at the market is full this is an excellent option only a few meters away. The bier is great and the food is also good. The menu is quite extensive and there is something for everyone. The Obatzda here is excellent and the pretzels they serve with it are fresh and chewy and taste delicious. I would love to come back here for dinner or lunch one day and try other menu items. The service started off a bit poorly but after a while it really improved a whole lot. We all enjoyed our afternoon there and I look forward to my return soon. read more

Hands down my favorite place in Munich. Great location in the (next to) Viktualienmarkt. I have been here many times and its never disappointed me. The food is very good you really can't go wrong with whatever you order. The beer is some of the best I've had anywhere in the world, it's true German beer at its best. They tap a wooden keg several times a day depending on how busy they are and trust me that beer is GREAT! The staff has always been friendly and welcoming, never rude or pushy. As you may know eating and beer are a very social event in Germany and the people we have encountered here will last me with a life time of memories...really! Gluten free fail! We asked for mashed potatoes instead of bread dumplings for my gluten free company and they suggested potato dumplings instead. I asked whether there was really no flour or bread in it and they confirmed. However, when the dumpling came it was topped with fried bread crumbs. We sent it back and they brought another one out without the topping. But: there was a breaded core to the dumpling. Apparently if you want to eat gluten free here you will have to order natural schnitzel with veggies no other sides or sauce. Would have been nice to know that before ordering and not when paying. For my meal: salty pork roast with crust. Average Bavarian food, ok portion size. Just not my usual cup of tea, probably good if you like pork. The gluten free fail really turned us off though, especially because the South of Germany is already so difficult to handle with all the breads and cakes etc. read more
