Ratskellar is a beautiful restaurant with delicious food. It breaks my heart to see that they closed at the beginning of 2026. I'm glad I had the opportunity to dine in this beautiful 150 year old restaurant. My review comes after its closure but it serves to honor the restaurant in hosting my visit. The Building is amazing where the walls and ceilings act as palettes for beautiful painted art. Stepping into the restaurant feel as if one is stepping through a time portal where one feels they are dining 151 years ago which is how old the building is. The ambiance is quite lively and energetic. Although the highlight is the space, the food is also very good. Their pretzels are served warm and fresh with a firm exterior and an interior that melts as it enters one's mouth. The soup is flavorful and healthy with not even a drop of oil pooling to the top. The schnitzel is as tender as it gets. The servers were knowledgeable and fast but it is always so busy that the restaurant should consider increasing staff as to improve customer service. Perfect location right in the heart of Marienplatz where the Glockenspiel is a stone's throw away. The bottled water we ordered took too long to arrive and the 'starter' dish of breaded Brie arrived the same time as our shared entree, their version of 'fried chicken.' A solid 4.5 star experience. The atmosphere is attractive "old world German". You feel like you are sitting inside of history. Located on the Marienplatz, there is plenty to see in that area. Ratskeller has phenomenal reviews on both Google and TripAdvisor. It's a huge restaurant but packed so it's definitely a good idea to make a reservation ahead of time! I started with the white asparagus cream soup with chives garnish. It was delicious and comforting BUT it was missing the most important ingredient in the soup "chunks of white asparagus" as listed on the menu. (I'm obsessed with white asparagus!) I let the waitress know and she was super nice and asked the kitchen to bring me a side of asparagus to add in. Even then, I was hoping for a thicker, creamier soup, but it was pretty watery. For the main, I had the pork knuckle which reminded me a bit of pernil. It wasn't as tender as I expected and was a little dry. Served with red cabbage (heavy on the cranberry sauce, not a fan!) and potato dumplings. I also ordered the white asparagus salad with avocado and corn. It came grilled and fried, definitely preferred the grilled version! Overall, it's a solid restaurant. A few things could've been better, but I'd still say it's worth checking out. read more

We were so excited to get reservations to this iconic restaurant, in the middle of Marienplatz in Munich! Ambiance- 10/10!! This place is BEAUTIFUL!! We went to the reservation desk to check in. The gentleman at the desk seemed annoyed we were there, as he was on his cell phone. We told him everything we wanted because we thought we might not see him again. We got all the German staples- breadbasket with Obzada cheese and lard spread - not delicious. Not much of taste at all. The Goulash soup was impressive, but wish it had more meat. We shared the Sauerbraten. It was mediocre. The meat was so tender, but the flavor was bland. It was served with red cabbage (it was mushy ) and the potato dumplings were ok. Not much flavor there either. Lovely service. We picked Ratskeller because of its great location in Marienplatz, right in the center of our walking tour and close to the mass transit station. We ordered cappuccino, a dark beer, a light beer, pizza, and the Jägerschnitzel. The beers were enjoyable, and the cappuccino was a nice touch. The schnitzel was hearty with a flavorful mushroom sauce. The pizza actually surprised us -- much better than expected and very good. The vaulted cellar atmosphere added to the charm, and despite the busy crowd, service was attentive and efficient. Chicken schnitzel (€13= $14.50 USD) - This consisted of 2 small chicken breast pieces battered and fried. In terms of flavor this was plain, but at least it was crispy. The chicken could have been more tender. Apple studel (€10.50= $11.50 USD) - Served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, this was on the smaller side, but the filling tasted great as it was slightly tart with a bit of sweetness. The crust wasn't too crispy, but still good. Water (.75 L) = (€6.75= $7.50 USD) - This was a total rip off, had I known the price of water here, I would have just filled up a refillable bottle just outside from one of the local water fountains. What an amazing outdoor dining experience! We passed through here walking around the city and decided to arrange our dinner plans entirely around returning. We ordered the caesar salad (without anchovies), crisp baked Brie soft cheese, Munich rostbratwurstl, and the wirsthaus bratwurst. The salad was a very large with super creamy dressing! The Brie bites were really tasty, especially with the sauce provided. The Munich rostbratwurstl was also really good, particularly with the sauerkraut and shredded horseradish. While in Marienplatz, we stopped in Ratskeller for lunch. We were seated immediately and the service was very friendly. We had some beer and I had a special from their seasonal asparagus menu: fried potato cake with sautéed white and green asparagus, spinach, and tomatoes, topped with a fried egg. The potato cake was so crispy and the veggies were tender but still had bite, and the fried egg yolk broke perfectly over top. It was so tasty! We then had Black Forest cake for dessert, which was really good, with the cherries adding tartness to the sweet cake. Pretty hidden as you walk underground to the restaurant/old cellar, we came across this restaurant walking around Marienplatz and reading the menu it looked like it had pretty tasty Bavarian food! Gorgeous, spacious and with medivalesque interiors like most bavarian food halls, Ratskeller had the added luxury of very prompt, attentive servers. The Ratskeller potato soup was divine along with the crisp, accompanying pretzel. The scheinhaxe was just delicious, topped off with Bavarian potatoes and the novel touch of red sauerkraut, which was slightly sweeter in complementing the tastes. The finale came with the Bayerischer Apfelstrudel, presented as opulently as it tasted. We stopped early for dinner so we didn't have a wait. Sat inside because it was pretty hot outside. Our waiter's English was excellent and he was so nice; unusual for our experience overall in Germany. Our son speaks German, so he communicated our entire trip but this is one place we would come back to as English speaking tourists. I have family in Germany, Munchen being one. I asked them to take me to spots they like to visit and this was one of them. The place is large and if you have time walk around. We only stopped to take a look and decided to stay for Bavarian beers. I had a great time and enjoyed the experience. I have, however, learned some important things about the area and perception of service, which I would like to share so you too can enjoy. 1. Most of the times water isn't free in Germany as it's customary to serve bottled water. 2. Service isn't as warm and cuddly in Bavaria, but tipping is also less. About 5-10%. 3. They will leave you be unless you make it known you need something. Such as raising or motioning with your hand or eye contact. 4. Go for and judge on the vibes, food and local authenticity, and judge them on the local standards. 5. Appreciate when they do, but don't expect everyone to speak English. It's Germany. A classy and classic venue for Bavarian and other German standards, Ratskeller is worth all the praise it gets for a great ambience, friendly, efficient staff, and delicious, reasonably priced food. We enjoyed a sampler of wurst, which came with just the right amount of potatoes and apple sauerkraut to even out all that meat. All the different kinds of wursts were grilled perfectly, and each had its own unique flavor, so this was a great way to identify our favorites. They rested in a sweet and meaty gravy full of umami itself. For dessert we had to have the Bavarian Apfelstrudel; we asked our server to recommend a drink to go with. He provided a wonderful local Munich blueberry liqueur, tart and strong - again the perfect complement to the strudel with its cream sauce and cream on the side. Given its private tables and expansive space, I don't think we need another traditional Bavarian spot in Munich... Ratskeller has nailed it! read more

Came here for a tour group dinner and I wasn't impressed. Service is so so although they do offer to clear plates fairly quickly to keep service going so that is nice. I liked the kellerbier very much and would recommend getting this if you haven't tried it before. The salad appetizer was good,a medley of potato salad, sauerkraut, pickled carrots with a nice dressing. The bread plate included pretzel which was nice but it was easy to overindulge before the entree came out. We had the beef with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes with red cabbage. I kid you not this dish tasted like a microwave dinner from the states. The beef is cut thin and smothered in a bland gravy. Potatoes looked creamy but were not and under seasoned as well.
