If you crave bun Bo hue, this place is a place in St. Louis to try. The flavor is there, however I wish it would be spicier but I was able to add sriracha and it turn out great. Would ask for sate and extra spicy next time. Their passion fruit drink is good. My boyfriend had their broken rice dish of which I forgot to take picture of and this dish taste pretty good. This place is one of a few places in St. Louis that I know that used actual broken rice instead of whole rice in their rice dish. I love broken rice. Parking lots has plenty of parking. This restaurant was not busy at the time that we went. It was just us for about thirty minute so it was nice, when we about to leave then there people coming in. read more

I know it's called China Wok. I've never ordered off their Chinese menu, and frankly, neither should you. These folks are turning out some of the best Pho in STL. Their golden tofu and shaking beef are also solid, and I've never regretted ordering either one. That being said, they've got some supply chain issues which mean the other mains aren't consistently available. I also don't recommend their salt and pepper calamari - the squid they used was relatively rubbery and low-quality. Even with the drawbacks above this place is so fucking solid. I love them. Told the owner or host that it was my first time here. I think I got a bigger portion than expected but it's deeply appreciated. Bigger portions means more love right?! The incense being burnt may not be business friendly. The outlet in the dining room area doesn't work. Tried to do work but couldn't. Didn't visit the bathroom but the hospitality was great. Very chill and small area tucked away in the plaza. The parking lot is large but is a very popular plaza off the highway. There are some reserved spots for the restaurant. The prices is a more expensive but you get larger portions (hopefully every time). They don't have water just bottled water which you'll have to pay additionally for. If you're looking for Chinese food, I didn't try it, but it looked so-so. If you're looking for Vietnamese Pho, or other Vietnamese food... yum!! Many of the best Pho restaurants in the city are closed or closing because the owners are aging. This one also has older owners, but I hope they stick with it for awhile. YUM. I ate the food here back when it was Crystal Vietnamese in South City. It was so good, when it closed and moved and renamed itself, I followed. I get how some people might be confused as to how a place named China Wok has great Vietnamese, but it does. I come here every time I'm in St. Louis. This place has, hands down, the freshest and most authentic Vietnamese food anywhere. Period. The pho is perfect. The spring rolls are perfect. And they have a salt and pepper squid dish that I sometimes dream about. I'm writing this review in reaction to all the one star reviews I'm seeing here for this gem of a restaurant. This place deserves a better rating. It's worth visiting if you like Vietnamese food. I've been here 30+ times and I go out of my way to visit. Don't let the name, or the reviews, fool or discourage. This was my first Pho and let me tell ya.....hotchacha! Love that it's customizable. Wife had egg drop that was good and sweet and sour chicken seemed to be hand breaded. Highly recommend, will be back. Oh and very friendly staff. read more

We ordered takeout shrimp fried rice and Moo Goo Gaipan along with a side order of crab rangoon. The crab Rangoon was crisp, hot and loaded with cream cheese. The fried rice was loaded with shrimp and took my wife 3 sittings to finish it. The Moo Goo Gaipan had large tender chicken throughout. We were delighted with our meal and all that cost $20. Delicious and fresh! Everything!! General Tso chicken was the best I've had, spicy goodness! Shrimp fried rice had lots of shrimp. My sister was very happy with the broccoli beef, the broccoli was fresh and the beef so tender. My brother in law loved his sweet and sour chicken, huge pieces of chicken and lots of it. The Hubby and I just got done eating our chinese food that was delivered!!! It was all piping hot, exactly how we ordered, and very good! The hot braised chicken was all white meat and seemed to be hand breaded with a delicious actually spicy sauce. Crab Rangoon were savory not sweet but that's how we like ours! I don't know whose picture is being used for the display picture, but that is certainly not this restaurant. This one looks in serious need of a renovation. In fact I'm pretty sure that picture is China Garden, the one up by Schnucks. It doesn't even have a display menu over the counter. It looks like something you'd walk into in the Hood. They don't even have self-service fountain drink machine! They didn't even have tea, and they give you CANS of soda, is this 1982? I usually go to the Chinese places up the street (one by Schnucks, one by Walgreens) which are much nicer and cleaner. Despite my suspicions, I ordered a broccoli w/ garlic sauce. When I got home, to my surprise, the garlic sauced had leaked right out of its packaging and ALL over my car seat. The styrofoam container wasn't shut right. I grabbed it and rushed it into my house, putting newspaper under it to catch the drips. I had to go clean my now-stained seats with hot water and detergent. Could you imagine if I had just bought a new car and this happened? I would be gravely pissed! When I did open my food to eat it, it was just broccoli and rice at that point, all the garlic sauce had come out of it. Not even a little left - the rice was DRY. I don't even think these people know how to prepare food correctly. I will never, ever, ever, go here again. read more

I can't attest for their Chinese food yet but I can -- without a doubt -- say that it has the best and most authentic pho in town. Not many people know that they serve Vietnamese and most people recognize it as a Chinese choy suey. Just ask for the Vietnamese menu. The other Vietnamese dishes are OK but their pho is sooo good. Their bun bo hue is pretty good too. I always recommended this place for Asian or Vietnamese food. It's a little dumpy looking and the service isn't the best (but it's not bad either). Because the China King down the street is closer to my home, I do not frequent the China Wok as much as I have in the past. This evening I was close and decided to give it my business as I have frequently in the past. Apparently it has changed ownership since my last visit, some 9-15 mos. ago, and evidently this is for the worse. Note it no longer looks like the picture here on Yelp. Ordering the cashew chicken combo plate for carryout I returned home to enjoy my meal. For some unknown reason they placed the sauce in a container on the side. This sauce was SO hot that it melted the bottom of the Styrofoam container, which when I picked it up it opened up and released half of the boiling content into the palm of my hand. Suffering second degree burns to the palm of my hand I called the China Wok shortly there after and politely told them about the incident so they might prevent it from happening again to someone else. I didn't even receive an, "I'm sorry." The attitude was more along the lines of I was bothering them and "oh well." Making a bad situation somewhat worse, the new owners evidently believe that 8 small nugget-sized rubbery chicken pieces with 25 cashew halves [yes I counted them] equates into an order of cashew chicken. The sauce, the boiling one, was merely thickened soy sauce with what I guess was added salt ~ salt was all I could taste! The fried rice ~ burnt and dried out. Finally, the Crab Rangoon . . . who knows. Can't stand the stuff and it wasn't what I ordered. I'd asked for the egg roll. So . . . CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED. Stay away from this China Wok on Telegraph Rd. The China King down the road or the China place up by Wal-Mart are much better in service, value, and customer appreciation/service. IMHO read more

Wish I could say something nice. My husband and I expected to try a 5 star Chinese restaurant. I can only give it 2 stars. .We were the only two in the restaurant. We each ordered soup. My husband had the Hot and Sour which he said was a little sour and not so hot. I ordered Wonton Soup. It was served with a pile of cilantro on top, which I cannot eat because it tastes like soap to me (one of 10% of the population with the problem). Then came the entrees. My husband had Szechuan Beef. The beef was very tender, there were lots of veggies, but it was not very spicy. I ordered the Hunan Beef. Again the beef was very tender with lots of veggies, but not spicy. Each dish was in a very thick soy flavored gravy. You could have a choice of rice but I was not asked and it arrived with Fried Rice. The rice tasted like onions with soy sauce on it. The egg roll that came with mine was fried very crisp and was a pork egg roll. I prefer vegetable egg rolls so not to happy with that. All in all we will not be going back. This is typical Americanized Chinese food. The person who waited on us was very friendly and the food arrived quickly but that is the extent of liking the restaurant. read more
