I've tried a lot of Chinese restaurants. This is by far my favorite. We used to live in St Louis Hills and moved to Maryland Heights 13 years ago. This is still the best Chinese food I've had. Every time we are in the area or pass by the area we make sure to stop in and grab a meal. We even just take a trip just to go get food from them. Plus you get a lot of food for your money. However, you should know that this place serves what seems like deep fried ground up chicken parts in their cashew chicken dish. All eleven members of our party agreed it was completely inedible. But alas, via Yelp I found that it had no relation so when we were in the mood for take-out, we decided to pick up from here. I was a little under the weather so I wanted soup. Their Hot & Sour soup was perfect... lots of egg, meat, and tofu pieces and the flavor was perfect. For dinner we tried a lo mein dish and shrimp kung pao. The entrees were good... maybe just a touch better than typical Chinese take-out... the fried rice that accompany's the dishes was made with pork and was savory. We also tried an appetizer of wings and rangoon. The wings were big, meaty, crisp. The rangoon were sweet. My only knock is that they didn't provide sauces. The irony of this is usually Chinese take-out places include an assortment of sauces... many of which I never use. We order online, and choose to pay with credit card at the counter. Last week, the proprietor added $1.09 to our credit card bill to make the tip 20% instead of the 15% I selected online. My husband picked up the order, but wasn't aware of what happened until he got home. Tried again tonight...she did the same thing. The online ordering system wouldn't let me put ZERO in the online tip amount; it wouldn't process the order. So I selected the 15% amount again. But I told my husband to watch to see if she decided to adjust our credit card payment again. She added $1.00 to make it a 20% tip. My husband called her on it. She just gave this "coy smile" as if she was unaware that what she was doing was wrong. Her husband came out to ask what was wrong and they began conversing in Chinese. My husband told her we wouldn't be ordering from them again. Their food is OK; and they raised the prices to adjust for inflation a while ago. I don't think they should be able to tack on a 20% increase as a "tip" ESPECIALLY when they are changing an online order. I'm guessing that it is not technically illegal since the charge doesn't go through until you pay with the card, and my husband could have made them adjust the entire payment before he put it on the charge card. Still...pretty sneaky. They don't deserve a 20% tip for putting food into take out containers and putting it in a bag, and handing it to you at the counter. I reserve the 20% tip range for restaurants where we are dining in and a server takes our order and brings our food, etc. My dad was a server at a restaurant for over 30 years, so I have never skimped on tipping. BUT I think it's pretty shady for someone to determine what YOU think their "service" was worth and take matters into their own hands. This place is in a strip mall, and I think it used to be a Subway, and it's pretty dark inside, but I have yet to find a better spicy General Tso's chicken anywhere. When the need for Chinese takeout hits, you'd better have a good spot in your back pocket; if you live or work near Kirkwood, this is the place. This is probably one of my favorite places to go for Chinese food. You might not notice it in the plaza with several other businesses and restaurants. It is a small space, with a few tables inside to dine in and eat. I am not generally a fan of buffets, but I go here for their lunch buffet! Each time I come, the food appears fresh and they are constantly refilling with fresh and hot food. They have a nice selection of crab rangoon, sweet and sour chicken, beef and broccoli, general Tso, fried rice and noodles. The buffet is not huge, which is another reason why I like it! There is enough offerings for lunch, but small enough that they can keep refilling with fresh and hot food. I can't speak for ordering items off the menu or carry out because I come for the lunch buffet, but would assume that their menu items are as delicious as what they offer on the buffet! Was excited to try this place based on the reviews but ended up very disappointed. We ordered delivery through door dash. The food arrived hot and first glance looked promising. We got crab rangoon, a vegetable egg roll, general tso chicken and bean curd homemade style. The crab rangoon...I am not even totally sure what that was. They were over filled so all the filling was coming out of them. The filling was bizzare. It was almost like a curdled texture and appearance and tasted more like frosting than cream cheese. They were gross. The vegetable egg roll was just cabbage-no carrot or green onion just bland cabbage but it was the best part of the meal. The rice was badly over cooked. I feel like a Chinese restaurant should at least know how to make rice. It was mushy and sticky with a glossy appearance like sushi rice. The general tso chicken was inedible. My 8 year old described it as hard plastic and couldn't chew it. The bean curd dish had promise with lots of veggies but minimal bean curd for a "bean curd" dish and there was zero flavor in the sauce. It was just like brown oil. Yelp strikes again! We were in Kirkwood and craving some quick Chinese food after spending over an hour at Wal-Mart getting my boyfriend new contacts. We didn't want to hit up Steak and Rice, so we opted for Yelp to direct us to our destiny, Panda Chinese Restaurant. To our good fortune, the food was extremely fresh, tasty and good. Jason got the half order house speical lo mein that comes with pork, steak, chicken, shrimp, and veggies. I got the half order of chicken fried rice and we split crab ragoons whch came with 8. Portions are huge. Half orders are enough for 2 people or for 2 meals. This is also probably one of the first times that I actually didn't have dry rice which is a plus in my book. For the first time ever that I have ever seen, there was Caucasion girl working there. True fact that I have never seen a white person work in a Chinese restaurant. This is totally not racial or anything, I just thought it was cool. She has worked there for 3 years and said she loved it. Kudos for a diverse work environment. The place fills up during the weekday lunch rush. The girl mentioned that the line is 'usually out the door'. We stopped in around 5:00pm on Saturday evening. A few costumers came in to grab their to-go orders, but no one was dining in house. Our orders came out within 10 minutes of the orders being placed. Nice and prompt. We decided to dine in, and we were pretty much the only people in there. There were a few people who stopped in to pick up their orders, and one group that actually walked in, looked at the menu, and walked out. Not a good sign. Well, I had the sweet and sour chicken, and it was pretty plain but decent. The crab rangoon was really good though!! My dining companion had the beef with mushrooms, and it wasn't the best. The meat wasn't very tender and it had a brown sauce on it that she wasn't a fan of. The fried rice was decent, but it just tasted really fried. So did the chicken. I have been looking for a decent Chinese place ever since I moved to St. Louis four months ago. Man there are some really terrible Chinese places in this metro area. Thankfully this place ISN"T one of them! Rather, it is the best Chinese food I have had yet. I ordered the crab rangoon and shrimp fried rice and it was really tasty. Granted it is difficult to screw up fried rice and I would probably need to order something a bit more complicated before getting too excited about this place. For now it gets four stars and I will update it when I go back. They do offer a small buffet as well which looked decent when I was there. My family has been ordering & eating Panda Chinese in Kirkwood for 20 years. My suspect fears have been materializing; the quality of the food is slipping. Some standbys are still good. We recently ordered a dish of Pad Thai Chicken. It had so much tamarind in it that it tasted 'pickled'. The (flat) noodles were over cooked and broken into pieces, it was mushy. I usually expect egg to be in pieces throughout a dish but this was a large fried egg like in egg foo young, just slung on top. In recent orders; eggrolls have been undercooked & pot stickers as well (very doughy). I'm afraid we are going to have to find a new place for Chinese food. I know they are usually busy but it just seems they've adopted that 'fast paced - don't care, just get it out' attitude. And their new website/online ordering doesn't have much in the way of entrée descriptions, telling you what is in it or what type of noodle etc and doesn't have any pictures. Panda Chinese is a small family-owned restaurant that has served my family's culinary needs ever since it opened "many" years ago. This is the first and only Chinese restaurant that my son likes. The food is excellent. The atmosphere is very family friendly, and has many regulars. The customers being from all walks of life, congregate and talk openly amongst themselves as they await their orders. Renovation work is a part of life (reference 12/10 comment), and will not deter me from returning for yet another tasty meal :) One of these days, I'm going to try their buffet for lunch - if I can ever find the time :) read more

First time ordering carry out. They have online ordering which is smooth but I wish the online menu had pictures of the food and ingredients. Ordered teriyaki chicken skewers, crab Rangoon, fried dumplings (potstickers), chicken fried rice, veggie lo mein, egg drop soup, general Tso chicken, and Mongolian beef. I was very pleased by the number of veggie ingredients. Most Chinese planes give you meat and sauce only in entrees. Veggie lo mein was loaded with snow peas, broccoli, carrot, mushrooms, onions, and water chestnuts. Definitely a surprise load of veggies. Everything was fresh, hot, and good quality. The Mongolian beef was definitely non-traditional. Usually when we've ordered it it's very savory, sticky/dry, and consists only of beef strips and onion. Panda's had tons of veggies, including mushrooms which bothered my husband but was a huge treat for me. The sauce was more of a beef broccoli sauce, pretty saucy and had some sweetness. The beef was good thick strips and was so tender and fat free. Really good quality chicken in the general tso and the dish had some broccoli (not much). Portions were large. Very good experience. I highly recommend. Only took the one star off for the lack of explanation of the dishes on online ordering that could lead to issues/surprises. We would definitely have ordered differently if we had known there would be mushrooms in the Mongolian beef and veggie lo mein. I love mushrooms but my family hats them and it ruined the beef dish for my husband. Please keep the dishes the same (I really loved everything) but share the ingredients on the menu so people can leave things out if needed. read more
