Outstanding Chinese food for a cheap price. The menu is pretty typical for a South St Louis Chinese place. The crab Rangoon doesn't always have a lot of crab, but the sweet and sour sauce is great. I almost hesitate to write this review, because then the secret will get out! This spot has quickly turned into one of my go-to's for a satisfying, generous portion of Chinese food for lunch. For just $4.99, you get your choice of nearly 2 dozen different options (king pao chicken, garlic chicken, sweet & sour pork, lemon chicken etc etc) plus a very big portion of fried rice AND your choice of 2 crab Rangoon or 1 eggroll or 2 fried wanton. Seriously: it's at least 2 meals for me whenever I go because I can't finish! I can't speak a lot of the staff since i'm usually getting it to-go and eating outside or back at my office. But they are super quick and efficient every time I walk in. The interior leaves a bit to be desired; however, don't let it fool you. This is my new favorite Chinese take out in STL. Had pork egg foo yung and moo goo gai pan. Both were tasty, filling, not at all greasy. Rice is fried rice by default. Rice is a little salty, but that's a good thing taste wise. If you are sensitive to salt, request the white rice instead. Items are about $1 more than most similar places here, but so worth it to unbox your lunch back home and find it NOT swimming in grease. Staff is very nice and hardworking. Food was delivered very fast and the wait isn't long at all. The food is also amazing. Especially the crab rangoon and the chicken wings, so crispy and creamy, 100% recommend. My recent past experiences, I had hard things in my rice and the chicken I ordered had a great piece of hair which I pulled out my teeth disgusting called up there to get my money back I brought them What came out my mouth, I had gotten half of my money back aswell by being yelled at by the father I guess the owner for what being a normal customer, Yes was my favorite spot but you lose me with this one not ok at all black hair which came out of one of your all heads I just look at you all, all of your have long black hair very disappointing and very disrespectful I wish restaurants the best but to make it my fault and yell at me well you all can just close up this wasn't fair I wa hungry and very angry I had to go right back up to the location and what did I eat that night other than black hair fried chicken and rice with hard stuff .. nothing because my appetite was finished for the day .. I've been living in south city for a while and got tired of commuting to Ucity for rice. I asked a friend who's lived on the south side his whole life who has the best rice and he replied "Kim Van!" I called in my order and found out they took debit(huge perk) The rice was delicious but I'm glad I added green pepper because they don't put it in the rice. Nor do they add egg. I'll get that added next time. The wontons were pitiful! They barely had any filling. I will not be getting those again. I'll go back for the rice alone which was good and a little spicy. read more

My gf and I decided to try something new, we typically go to Old STL Chop Suey, her fav and Bo Fung, my fav. Reviews seemed good so it was a no brainer. We ordered Moo Shu Pork and Hot Braised Chicken, won ton soup, crab rangoon and fried wontons. When we got home the Moo Shu pork was wrapped in a plastic bag with juice and liquid coming out of the styrofoam container. While attempting to remove the container from the bag. The juice and liquid spilled everywhere, that was a taste of what was to come. Instead of a hot tangy, thick sauce covered over crispy battered chicken, there was watery slightly tangy soup with soggy chicken. Completely inedible and after a few bites my gf and I were gagging. The 2 star is for the fried wontons and the crab rangoon, only silver lining. Pass this place up, we are ill. read more

Rough times man! My search for adequate, cheap Chinese food continued earlier this week at Kim Van Restaurant on Gravois. And that journey continued right out the door! At first glance, this place has potential. When looking for cheap Chinese, anyone would look at this hole in the wall and hope that it was a haven for some tasty creations. We drive by it all the time, so we finally took a chance. The first thing that we noticed were the posters on the wall from 2002. Apparently, PBS came in to film Kim Van for a Sandwich documentary. What that sandwich might have been was beyond me. There was no mention of it from the girl who waited on us. We just ordered a couple of Chinese norms and waited for our orders in the lobby, which kind of looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the PBS crew came to visit. Gravois always has me on edge. The only action that this place saw when we were there was a gentleman coming in, ear to his cellphone, and requesting change for the bus. On the way out, he referred to the man at the counter as a "Chinamen" to the person that he was talking to. How very 19th century of him! After several minutes, our food arrived. I was put off by how dark our fried rice was. It was a shade that I had yet encountered in my Chinese food career. The chicken was overcooked and dry. The crab rangoon could have passed for Tic Tacs, that how small they were. Overall, not a very grand experience. I don't think we shall be returning. read more

Hands down my favorite Chinese restaurant in STL. I moved here about 8 years ago and have been on a hunt for great quality, flavor, and affordability and Kim Van does all of that x100. Their staff is always very friendly and their delivery has always been on time! My favorite part is the quality of ingredient and the flavor! For shame on me for never, ever trying a St. Paul sandwich and calling myself an OG from St. Louis. The Shrimp St. Paul sandwich is not only reasonably priced but ultimately satisfying. Hot and fresh, especially from delivery! Their Sweet and Sour Shrimp has a scrumptious breading accompanied with a tasty sauce. They're thoughtful and serve it on the side if opt for carry out. The ever so tradition of Vess soda with Chinese food is always available as well as Mystic drinks. A pretty nice selection of both! A free Vess can if you meet a certain price for delivery. To be completely honest, I never have a hard time making the quota and its a sweet surprise to be awarded more tasty treats. If none of this has persuaded you pass the ratings which sometimes seem to be ungracious for some restaurants with those with too much free time.. Let me add that the ordering process is a delight. Always friendly and thoughtful as well as a family oriented business. The daughter or mother always waits on you and/or takes your order, to whom are very courteous as well as nice people. I find the food good, fast, and inexpensive. Its a bit better than the other places within 10 minutes of Soulard. Maybe its better to ignore the dining room, but its clean and feels safer than other stand-alone carryout places. The St. Paul is GREAT, but I get the combo dinners a lot too. I ordered the seafood delight and an ice water "for here". The cashier overcharges every time. She charged me for a bottle of water and when I said something she gave me a dirty look and curled her lip at me. When she called out the food at the window she said the fried rice my friend ordered wasn't ready yet. I asked her To bring it out when it was done and gave me the same, ugly, dirty look complete with lip snarl without communicating in words. I found the food was not worth the attitude. We ordered delivery at lunch time for our office in City Hall. They do get the food to you very fast, I'll give them that. I didn't particularly care for anything I ate. I ordered the lunch combo of Orange Chicken, with fried rice and 2 rangoons. I only had the fried rice since I forgot to tell the girl calling in the order that I wanted steamed rice, so that was not going to be to my liking anyway. The fried rice was super dark, that's all I can say about that. The rangoon filling was different and it had black stuff in it, not sure what it was, some kind of spice I was hoping. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. The orange chicken was also weird. The breading made it kind of mushy feeling when I ate it, but the chicken inside was nice and white. The sauce was so-so, probably more orangy then I'm used to, but not bad. What did throw me was the little penis mushrooms! I've never had orange chickens with mushrooms (which I can't stand anyway). I don't know what kind they were, but they were whole small cap mushrooms. I gave them to a co-worker to eat. None of the 3 of us were impressed with our food and have decided we won't be ordering from them again. Oh, and they charged us for delivery (expected) and for parking (not expected). read more
