The girl that took my order seemed to speak English well, however, I had to repeat myself several times and even pointed in the paper menu what I wanted - shrimp/mushrooms/shoots. She asked me if I wanted half or whole order. I should have known then she still didn't understand me. I said half and ended up getting shrimp fried rice. This actually worked out because it was easier to eat in the theatre. Was charged for shrimp fried rice. Seemed like there was a lot of carry out orders. Fried rice was as expected. I don't know....frustrating. I don't think we will do this again.

The crab ragoon was only filled with cream cheese. The rice was just bland in my opinion and definitely needed some soy sauce. If you are looking for some flavor I'd look elsewhere. They are huge thick soft pieces with enough crispness on the outside. It's a good introduction to how seriously Chinese people take tofu and how in other countries they have a huge variety of tofu, vs the select few we have in the U.S. And I used to be partial to the spicy fried fish at cate zone, but chilispot has upgrade this dish a lot. It's perfectly crispy and hot!!! Even if you don't like fish, it's a great dish and also makes for great leftovers. I know the fried chicken is popular but I find the chicken pieces are too small. It was excellent and had just the right amount of heat. I also enjoyed the smoky ham fried rice, although it lacked the distinct smoky aroma I was expecting. Some of the other dishes didn't quite land for me. The fish soup wasn't my favorite, and the beef noodle soup wasn't especially memorable. The cumin lamb, however, was better than expected and ended up being one of the stronger dishes we ordered. That said, the service was friendly, the portions were generous, and there are plenty of interesting options on the menu. I'd definitely come back to try some different dishes next time.

Maybe they're fine on other days, but it took two and a half hours for my meal to be ready, long after the quoted time online. I'm sure they were exhausted and working nonstop. The pepper chicken was pretty good, except it was missing the egg I paid to add, as well as the rice. After waiting so long, I was really annoyed about the order missing the extras. It was an extra $5 to order online, too. I'm giving them grace because they were way overworked that night, and the food was pretty good. But they definitely need to cap orders or give more accurate time estimates. Nothing impressed me. I was really disappointed that they do not offer my favorite dish, General Tso. Since they had no General, I went with Orange Chicken. Several reviews on Yelp said it was really good, so I gave it a go. The flavor was good and the chunks of white chicken were large pieces. What disappointed me was, the excessive amount of breading around the chicken. It was way too much for my personal tastebuds. The combination plate came with an Egg Roll and a scoop of Fried Rice. Both of those sides were acceptable. Especially the, Fried Rice. It was soft and moist, some fried rice is overly dry, but not here. I had no need to add soy sauce to the rice, as stated, it was soft and moist already. The Egg Roll was average, but had good flavor. I also had an order of Crab Rangoon(s). It came with 4 pieces. They were large and fried to a light golden color. The pocket was filled with a fair amount of filling. It was creamy, but the crab flavor did not come through, so I wouldn't order them again. The older man working the counter was doing the best he could, as the order counter was fairly busy and he had phone orders and Grub-Hub orders coming in as well. Once a younger man arrived, he got things running smoothly. From the front counter you can see directly into the kitchen and watch the ladies preparing all the food. I'm not writing HKE off, I will give them another try. Reviews also, sing the praises on their St. Paul Sandwich and I'm determined to find the best one in STL.
