Chong Wah was one of the most unique dining experiences I have had in St Louis. Before entering, an unhoused woman sitting just outside the door solicited us for money. Just inside the door, there was a booth piled high with a variety of socks. There were also a few men in booths, not eating or waiting for food, just hanging out (and possibly trying to sell the socks?). We were visiting from far out of town, and desperately wanted to use a restroom, but were told that there was no public restroom available. This was the first time I had ever experienced this in a restaurant. The counter had a very tall plexiglass window with a faded menu on the wall behind it. The area where the bathrooms should be was taped off and filled with junk. Two of the three trash cans were taped up and the third was overflowing. The floor was dirty and many of the booths were too. We ordered Moo Goo Gai Pan, Sichuan Beef, Chicken Lo Mein, potstickers, crab Rangoon, and Sweet and Sour chicken with no sauce and no sides. The MGGP and SB were both delicious and piping hot. They had a very high vegetable to meat ratio (we would have liked more meat), but overall were good. The sweet & sour chicken came with sauce on it, which we had to return because my daughter wouldn't touch it with sauce. They threw away the saucy order and brought us a fresh order within 5 minutes. The chicken was greasy (we wrapped each piece with a napkin to sop up the extra oil before eating). The pot stickers were enjoyed by all. The general consensus was that the crab Rangoon needed more filling and were slightly dry. One of the most difficult and frustrating things about our meal was that there were no plates with our order and the forks were flimsy- which made it hard to eat out of the little cartons. We all had to share from the cartons, since we had NO PLATES. Seriously... no plates is incredibly inconvenient, especially when eating with children. Overall, if you're considering eating here- get your food for carry out. Dining in was not the most sanitary or comfortable environment. After our experience, I doubt that we will return to Chong Wah. read more

Chong Wah on Lindell use to be the best chinese food this side of the city. Now it is possibly the worst. This chicken was so dry today. I was embarrassed that I brought my work friends there. There was hardly any sauce on the chicken and I hate to say it but every piece was in the shape of a mouse. These use to come in a nugget shape but they are all the size of a small mouse. Quick and Convenient. We ordered Chong Wah for a late dinner on Saturday night. I called for takeout and my food was ready by the estimated time. I ordered the whole order of sesame chicken and and order of crab Rangoon. The crab Rangoon were decent but I felt the filling to wrapper ratio was a bit off. I was impressed by how much sesame chicken was included in my order. The portion size was quite large this could easily feed 2 people. For years, Chong Wah has been (arguably) the best Chinese takeout option in the central part of the City. As far as I can tell, that's still the case. The options lean heavily on Chinese-American carryout favorites: General Tso's, fried rice (with onion and egg, by default), cashew chicken, egg rolls, hot & sour soup, chop suey. Less common options like egg foo young and St. Paul sandwiches (egg foo young, in sandwich form) are also available. (Menu with old prices: http://go2chongwang.weebly.com/menu.html). Fast, inexpensive and consistently prepared, the fact that I can't recall a mixed-up order or unpleasant batch of rice in over a decade keeps Chong Wah on my neighborhood shortlist for lunch or a quick dinner. COVID tips: The dining room booths are currently blocked off and there are social distancing markers on the floor. The front door may be propped open to allow contactless entry and exit, and a clear divider has been built over the counter with a gap and red tray set off to the left to pass orders. Hand sanitizer is available on the counter and the staff were wearing masks, gloves and, in some cases, face shields. I love Chong Wah for the food quality alone! The food taste really good and the portion size is huge! You get a lot of food for the money you pay for it! This places is located in the Central West End by the schnucks on Lindell! You can either call in your order or you can go pick it up. Usually it is done within 10 or 15 minutes. Here is the bad part about this review. When you walk in there will be a few homeless people who try to get you to buy from them certain stuff. I am sure the stuff is legit but it's kinda scary. Then after you go past them the staff is not the friendliest people in the world. You also have to pay for everything. Things other restaurants give for free you are charged here. They also do not let you grab your sauces because they want to limit how many you can have. Honestly, the food is decent. HOWEVER, every time I get food, there is an inch of watered down sauce (in part due to condensation). It wakes the chicken soggy and when the cheap, thing bag tears, there is immediately sauce ALL over your car. It's a huge inconvenience & is enough of a reason to not return...... I'm not sure why this place had such a high rating. The main benefit for me when I eat here is price and location. The food has a long way to go before it will make me want to return. The vegetables were off-colored, but I give this a pass because it's hard to find good fresh vegetables at an affordable price in the CWE. The place was old and dirty, but again given a pass because it's CWE. What I was most disappointed in was the quality of the sauce on my Mongolian beef. Watery and flavorless. The beef wasn't dark, but light. Worse than fast-food quality, in my opinion. The yelp rating is extremely misleading. Like others I am confused why this is rated so high. First of all this place is sketchy as hell. Walked in the door and there were 2-3 knuckleheads up to no good inside. This is my favorite Chinese take out spot in the CWE. The food is wonderful, cheap and it comes comes out fast! My favorite dish here is the General Tso's Chicken which is amazing. FOOD QUALITY: The Hot Braised Pork was extremely heavy on the portion of "meat," but with a tiny box of steamed rice. I realize this caters to some, who simply want a lot of meat - and I would've been accepting of this had the meat been good - but it wasn't. The pieces of meat looked deceptively large. The actual meat was about 1/3 the size of the chunk, surrounded by breading (or POSSIBLY skin), with an air pocket in between. PROS: 1. The sauce was good. 2. I just wanna say this place is awesome. I've never been disappointed. I feel like I've tried the majority of the items on the menu within the past month and they are all great. I'm a big fan of the pot stickers and the special fried rice. The employees are nice and the restaurant is pretty clean. Prices are also reasonable. One issue I had is I saw an online menu that said they sold coffee but when I got there I was told they do not. Which is no biggie at all but I will have to admit I was confused. The only thing preventing me from giving this place all 5 stars is the location of the restaurant. I'm a slu student and I get harassed by strangers at least twice a week when I'm the area. People catcalling me, asking me for money, etc. it would be nice to get my Chong Wah with a side of peace! But I love this place and will keep coming for as long as I can. read more

This may be the best Chinese takeout joint in St. Louis. The only downside is that the place is often very busy, and the wait times can be long if you don't phone in your order ahead of time. A whole order of duck fried rice (w/ no green onion for me), and an extra duck leg really does the trick for me. As with most "takee-outees" you need your own bottle of soy sauce because the stuff in the packets is merely colored salt water. read more
