As usual, I am on the road for work and I find myself in the Bloomington/Normal, Illinois area this week. My day was over before lunch and I had a hankering for Chinese food. China Star is right around the corner from my hotel so it was the natural choice and I stoped on my way back from where I am working. Like most quick service Chinese restaurants, the dining area was small and had the obligatory lighted menu with photographs of the more popular choices. I am a creature of habit at these types of Chinese restaurants so I ordered my usual... General Tso's Chicken lunch special. If you are unfamiliar with lunch specials at Chinese restaurants, they consist of the main course, fried rice, and an egg roll. This is exactly what I was craving, so China Star hit all the buttons. In typical quick service Chinese restaurant style my food was ready before I knew it and I was on my way. More so than usual, my food had a very strong garlic smell which wasn't unpleasant. I had the good fortune to smell my food on the short trip to the hotel from the restaurant. The food was packaged with care and looked like your typical General Tso's when I opened the to-go container. The rice was more brown than usual but I am used to all shades between white and brown when it comes to fries rice. Most Chinese restaurants don't prepare fried rice as it should be but that's okay, I enjoy it anyway. The egg roll was a bit on the small side but again, I have seen the gamut in egg roll size and besides... well, you know how the saying goes. The food tasted good. The General Tso's sauce wasn't overly sweet as is the case at many Chinese restaurants. The fried rice was tasty, as was the egg roll. I did have to use the packaged hot mustard.... meh. I prefer the real thing when it comes to Chinese hot mustard. I want my eyes to becomes waterfalls and I want my sinuses to scream in pain. If your face isn't contorted after you take a bite of an egg roll slathered in hot mustard, you aren't living! Overall, China Star is your typical neighborhood Chinese quick service restaurant. The staff friendly and helpful, the food not bad, and overall a good value. read more

Consistency: I've eaten here many many times, and tried many different menu items. They always come out just as I expect. No surprises. 2. Quality. China Star uses the best and freshest ingredients. I've eaten at some of their competitors, who sometimes use mystery meat and limp veggies. This is never the case at China Star. 3. Service: I've never had to wait longer than expected on an order, and the staff are all courteous and attentive. I been traveling everywhere in West Coast where lot of population of Asian food but can't find a decent healthy Chinese food at it fine dining too. I missed Henry & his wife..very caring in their cooking recipes. My favorites from them is Singapore noodle, egg foo young, beef & broccoli, lo mein noodle OMG perfection! First Wok is usually our go-to, but they're closed on Tuesdays, and I didn't want to cook. Why not try somewhere new? It's takeaway Chinese; how bad can it be? Bad. It can be so bad. Ended up here because The Spot across the street was closed. Got Mongolian chicken to go. There are a few tables but everyone was there waiting in carry-out orders. The Mongolian chicken was unlike any I've ever had, in fact I thought I got the wrong food. There were pea pods in it and grilled onions instead of green onions. The fried rice had peas in it, but not too many. Portion sizes are good and it's reasonably priced. The crab Rangoon was the best I've ever had. I was really craving Chinese food and me and my family went out searching for places that were open on a Saturday night and we found this place and we gave it a shot. There were only 2 tables in the restaurant because it looks like it primarily does takeout. We order the food and it came out in 5 minutes. We had the family meal which consisted of beef and broccoli, pork fried rice, Mongolian chicken and crab ragoons. I was very satisfied with the food and the service was very attentive. If I were to get Chinese food around the town of normal I would come here. read more

What a pleasant surprise! I am new to B-N area and this is by far best Chinese I have had here. The egg roll had real shrimp not that dried up little pink shrimp tasting strip. The shrimp egg foo young was thinner patties, contained vegetables and had the light brown gravy. Have had thick patty and dark brown gravy in past but much prefer it the way China Star made it. The beef with broccoli was soft and flavorful with fresher broccolli than 75% of the take out I have had. Also had steamed vegetables entree and I love Love LOVE that they offer this. The on the side sauce (thank you for this option) was dark brown soy sauce based kind of terayaki like. Vegetables were bok choy, celery, pea pods, and broccoli. Weirdly there were no carrots or watercress in mine which brings us to why four stars. I am not a rice connoisseur and I did not have fried rice but considering good quality of entrees, the white rice was surprisingly overcooked and sort of sticky. I have had way worse and was totally edible but for the not cheap price, I would have liked better rice. Overall will definitely eat here again and recommend to others. The large family portion of general tso chicken had 4 teaspoon sized pieces of broccoli....for 4 people. Each of us got less than a mouthful of broccoli and the flavor was horrible. When I called to address the issue, the manager accused me of lying and said I could either come get it myself or get a free one next time. I accidentally ordered from here once. I meant to order from Great Wall, but turns out I ordered from here. I picked up the food and was a little skeptical of it. The place looks weird and not quite as nice as Great Wall. But, I'll tell you, the looks of the restaurant do not speak for the quality of the food in this case. The food was actually pretty good, better than I really anticipated, and that made for a great night for me. I was elated with the taste and consistency of the sauce on my General's Tofu and found the fried rice to be of the "quality fried" variety, instead of the "brown steamed rice with grease and flavor" you find as so many other restaurants. The food wasn't overly greasy, nor was it bland or dry. I have to say that this isn't my first choice in Chinese food (I've got a place in every city for that) but it is a pretty decent choice. If you're tired of ordering from the same place over and over again, give these guys a try, cause they do get it right. read more

China Star has replaced Great Wall as our go-to Chinese restaurant in town. It's fantastic quality for the price. The Kung Pao chicken is amazing, the egg rolls taste fresh, and the Sweet & Sour chicken is clearly handmade. I am sooo glad our friends turned us on to this place. They have really dropped off in terms of quality. I just ordered delivery and after almost 2 hours they only delivered part of the order, and what was delivered was cold and not very tasty. I called and order food. My husband order Shrimp LO Mein. and he received chicken instead. I order Egg Fu Young, I received burn egg fu young, all bottom burn, very greasy! so much grease, I could have fried chicken with it. This was the worst food I ever received. I went up there of course the daughter came to the door, I explained I wanted my money back! I asked her to go get her parents. The son came to door, said that they cook egg fu young that way! I said burnt? go get your parents. Father came to the door said, for me to call the bank and get my money back he did not know how to give my money back will not give me cash. I gave my card to him ask him to put back on, he went inside than come back out to say "call your bank" was not able to do that! I never receive an apology! I ate there last week. I got the Moo Goo Gai Pan with shrimp fried rice, a pork egg roll, and an order of BBQ beef sticks. The food tasted decent. The BBQ beef sticks were excellent. I left and went to Jewel to grab some cat food right after that. As soon as I stepped through the door my stomach began to rumble. I baaaarely made it to the bathroom. This had to have been no more than 20 minutes after I ate. My daughter likes China Star & always pick it up. Tonight I picked it, the cooks don't use gloves and they also use styrofoam containers. Food coming out of the fryer going into a styrofoam container of course melts the styrofoam. So with my entree I'm having a taste of styrofoam I'm too tired to write a long review but the food is so so and while I'm eating the chicken I'm praying it's really chicken I'm eating. I'm curious what the Health Department reviews look like for them. It's not a place I would eat @ again. Also it was so hot the cooks were sweating like crazy so I'm sure there's some sweat in my entree as well.
