Bought something from this Chinese restaurant in Normal as carryout. Ching's is pretty much a basic place to get Americanized Chinese food. It has a counter to order at and a few tables. From the looks of things, most people don't want to stick around. They get it to go, and get out. About the most basic looking Chinese restaurant there is to be honest. It's sparsely decorated and has a generally boring atmosphere inside. This is located in a boring strip mall next to a gaming lounge. Go inside and order at the counter. It's about $12 for an entree. We got Szechuan Fried Tofu With Vegetable. A generous portion came in the container. The tofu was kind of chewy and overcooked. Had a pretty good spice to it. This came with cabbage, mushrooms, and pea pods. For sure if not minding the atmosphere it's a pretty okay place for cheap food. It's located on Main Street in a crappy looking plaza. Amazing EGG ROLLS!!!! Kung Pao chicken was delicious with the right amount of heat! Crab Rangoon and house made sauce; YUMMY! We live out of town, with little to no decent Chinese food. This is my first time ordering from here (at least in this location) and I'm disappointed that it took me this long. I ordered beef chop suey (I know it's not authentic Chinese but I had a craving) and it was really good. Most places make it greasy but their version was light and fresh. They have a newly built phonebooth sized pickup area built into the front door area so that you don't have direct contact with the employees. Stopped by on a cold day. Good portions competitive price. I do appreciate good Chinese food. Started of with the crab Rangoon, love the filling but not very big- probably not the highest valued food. Egg rolls were the best egg rolls but packed with food flavor. We ate here last night and was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was!! Was recommended to try this place by a friend and I'm glad we did. Service was faster than expected and food was nice and hot when we got it! Ambiance inside the restaurant was a bit odd but you could tell it's a family owned shop which we love! Reasonably priced. Ordering from their website is terrible. Takes too long and very hard to navigate. Please invest in a better ordering website. My food took 2 hours to deliver and was cold to the touch. I had to re-heat in the oven. This is unacceptable. During dinner hours there needs to be either more workers to deliver and food needs to be fresh. I'm understanding to a certain degree when it comes to orders coming late, but I should never have cold food. Called to complain and they will do nothing for me. Terrible customer service. read more

Fried rice was pretty good, however the kung pao chicken was made with some of the lowest grade meat I have ever experienced. You know when you reheat breaded chicken in the microwave and it comes out all soggy and mushy? That is basically what the texture of the chicken from Ching's was like. I'm unsure if the chicken was prepared hours earlier and was just left to marinade in the kung pao sauce until someone had the misfortune of ordering it, but it was incredibly gummy and definitely not made to order. There was, however, an impressive assortment of vegetables that came with it and the veggie-meat ratio was impressive. Still, it doesn't matter much when it is of such a substandard quality. Crab Rangoon was excellent but egg roll was standard. I had the shrimp chow mein. It didn't have much flavor except that of heavy garlic. The fried rice was also unimpressive. Chinese food is a crapshoot in Bloomington-Normal. I was a huge fan of Bing's Wok until a few years ago when they switched ownership. Things just weren't the same. Then Ching's opened up. It's right down the street from me, and I ignored it for a long time until I finally gave in to the urging of my friends. You know how 90% of Chinese take-out places use that spongey chicken and beef that you can tell is real meat, but only in the loosest sense of the words "real" and "meat?" Ching's isn't like that. When I order a chicken dish, I can see the cook scoop a big ladleful of pre-prepped real chicken and throw it in the wok. It's not the highest quality meat, but at least it's real and exhibits the consistency of chicken. There are some things that are frozen, like the egg rolls and crab rangoons. The breaded chicken seems to be frozen chicken bits as well. But find me a Chinese restaurant anywhere that will make you general tso's from scratch in two minutes. Not possible. I mean, come on... if you want high-quality food, why are you ordering Chinese take-out? Nevertheless, everything is cooked to order, including egg rolls and crab rangoon. Nothing is scooped out of a buffet line and put in a plastic clamshell for you. In general, their food is very good. The reason for the three stars is that their service is less than perfect. I usually call in my pickup orders and arrive at the specified time (10 minutes) to get my food. Each time I have done this, they haven't had my food ready. Scratch that, they hadn't even started cooking my food. They looked confused and then pointed to a slip of paper and it appeared that they forgot about my order. Every time I've ordered. Also, the sauce on the szechuan chicken was extremely disappointing. Ching's is the best take-out Chinese in Bloomington-Normal, which isn't saying much. But it's better than just about anywhere else. There are only a few bad choices on the menu, but if you know to avoid them you'll find it quite enjoyable. read more

Very good Chinese takeout! Chings' food is fresh, not too salty and they don't skimp on the quantity. Lunch was incredible: a main course, pork fried rice, egg roll, a crab Rangoon and some fried noodles...all for a ridiculous $5.55! I grew up eating Chinese food in the NYC area, and this comes very close in flavor and quality. If you order a combo meal in any other Chinese restaurant in town, the fried rice is some flavorless brown concoction with a few carrots and peas thrown in. The fried rice at Chings is the real deal and it will leave you craving for more. The young lady that manages the place is very friendly and helpful which adds to the pleasant experience. My egg roll was only half cooked, the rice tasted dry and old, and the chicken was far less than what I've come to expect from Chinese restaurants. This was a huge waste of time and money. Ching's is always my go-to when I want classic takeout Chinese in Normal - try ordering it for lunch, their lunch deal is an insane bargain! All the standards are here - beef chop suey, general's chicken, crab rangoon. The kung pao chicken stands out as great, with the right amount of spice and nuts in it. You can see can see back into the kitchen, and I saw two chefs working on disk-sled sized woks. Man! That's got to be the hardest job on earth. First, when ordering delivery, I expect the deliverer to come to my door, not call me and wait in the parking lot. Second, I didnt know egg rolls could be so dry. Third, "hot and spicy pork" infers that pork is the primary ingredient, not onions. This business has caused me to waste my money. The one reedeming quality of this experience was the decent shrimp with lobster sauce. I asked for disposable chopsticks and received none. That's pretty sad. Ching's is my favorite place to get Chinese in the area. The portions are very big and the lunch deal is a great deal. I normally get General's or Sweet and Sour Chicken and I haven't been disappointed. The only problem is that it sometimes takes them 20 minutes to deliver, sometimes an hour and 20 minutes. Finally decided to try out Chinese food in Bloomington-Normal and I went with low expectations and hesitation. The food was better than I had expected since I grew up in Chicago and on Chinese food. It certainly isn't the best but it's decent! Not too salty but still good flavor. If I'm really dying to eat Chinese cuisine in the area I would consider coming back again.
