Really delicious food for a really cheap price. I ordered the Lunch portion of General Gau's Chicken with white rice for $7.25, and was able to eat it for 3 portions: dinner, the next day lunch, and the next day's lunch. Delicious, and I usually am not a fan of asian food. I'd rather go for pizza. But this place is good, for takeout or delivery. The inside is nice enough to walk into to pick up your food, but is not decorated for eat-in. read more

China River Restaurant - Chinese Near Me - Beverly, Massachusetts

This was my first visit to China River on Rantoul Street in Beverly. I had some time to kill while waiting for the battery in my MacBook to be replaced at Marconi Radio, so I decided to stop in for lunch. Maybe it was just an off day, but unfortunately I came away disappointed. I ordered three of my favorite American Chinese dishes. Hot & sour soup (extra spicy), pan fried dumplings, and shrimp with lobster sauce. The food wasn't terrible, but nothing really hit the mark for me. The hot & sour soup tasted like the extra heat came from hot sauce rather than traditional Asian spices, which gave it a bitter flavor that just didn't work. The pan fried dumplings were noticeably greasy, both inside and out, making them difficult to enjoy. The shrimp with lobster sauce was probably the best of the three dishes, but even that was just okay rather than memorable. I almost never waste food, but this was one of those rare meals where I ended up throwing away well over half of it. Every restaurant has an off day, so I'm hoping that's all this was, but based on this first experience I don't see myself rushing back. read more

Food looks unappetizing, and the taste isn't much better. Definitely not a place to dine there, as it is clearly designed for takeout (only plastic utensils, food served in takeout containers, sauce only in plastic packets). read more

worst Chinese food I've ever eaten !! everything was so greasy!! the eggrolls and the spring rolls are all dough inside and even the white rice is greasy and the duck sauce has a funky taste!!! Never again read more

Delicious was a delivery order . Perfect taste and nice portions . These were all small portion orders read more

don't! The lo mein is not lo mein it's linguine and it's covered in so much salt and sauce. You can barely eat it. The boneless spareribs were tougher than an Irish Catholic school nun again swimming in tons of sauce. staff was pleasant enough, but in no way makes up for the quality of the food. read more

First timers and the food was great as well as well as the staff very friendly to. I definitely give it a 5 star

Not the top , but definitely not the lowest ! I like their food so far and the staff is usually really really nice with a great sense of humor. 5 stars just for that ! read more

We decided to give this local Beverly restaurant a chance, even after reading some of the dismal reviews, but we're happy to report the food and service were excellent today! We placed a delivery order (for a group of 7 business people) in advance and for a specified time. The order was delivered on-time and complete with all expected items. Included in the order was shrimp lo mein, pork fried rice, beef/chicken teriyaki, crab rangoon, and dumplings... accompanied by plenty of the usual sauces and fortune cookies. Everything was hot, fresh and delicious. We couldn't have asked for more. The only slight criticism was that the lo mein may have had too much dark soy or oyster sauce. The group was very pleased, and the vote for 5-stars was unanimous! Maybe we caught them on a good day, but we will order again, if the opportunity arises. Thank you, China River!! read more

not only was the woman on phone rude, the food was terrible! rice was mush, wings pork strips dry dry dry .. egg roll forget it terrible. never go there again . too many other places to spend $ ,to on this garbage. never right reviews but this food was so bad had to say something !!!!!!!! read more

I always loved the food, but last Friday I got an order that was subpar for them. The chicken fingers had very little chicken, the crab Rangoon had very little ingredients and the pork was very different. Did not enjoy. We used to get. Our new years food there but not anymore. read more

China River has to be the best Chinese restaurant in Beverly I give it 5 stars Their boneless spare ribs are very tender rice is always rich the crab rangoons are very good just everything is amazing and the workers there are very nice A plus tip the delivery driver Anthony is very fast when it comes to delivery's Tip the man read more

Been going there for decades, however I believe there may be different management? Recently purchased food there last week. Absolutely Horrendous... not only was the Order terrible they did not fulfill the Order I paid for. Heaved it, wasn't worth taking a chance after the first bite. The Chow Mein was so watered down.... The " cherry" topping for Sweet & Sour was tasteless and also watered down. chicken Fingers overcooked. ADIOS! read more

Good quality has taken a huge step back in the past 6 months. They skimp on ingredients and some orders have been burned. There are better choices ces in Beverly. read more

We ordered for the first time last night and got diarrhea and big time acid reflux and had to toss the pork strips (discs) after two. So dry and bad tasting were the pork rounds my husband said since those were his thing. Garbage right away. Egg rolls ...lame. beef teriyaki sticks? Hard and dry, not luscious and moist like any other place delivers. Chicken low mein... meh... best part if you ad soy sauce and hot mustard. Oh and I so wanted a ginger soy sauce to go on my egg roll or other apps I may want to order in future, but won't. This ginger soy sauce hand an identity disorder. Oily/vinerary/hello ginger? STAY AWAY FROM CHINA RIVER. WEAR A LIFE VEST SO YOU DONT SINK AND GET FOOD POISONING AND CALL IN SICK LIKE US TODAY! read more

This was the absolute worst Chinese food my family has ever had. Our usual place was closed and we had had China River once before a couple years ago. Never again. We had to throw over $52.00 worth of food away. It was horrendous. Do.Not.Recommend. Garbage. read more

Tried ordering delivery on Friday, July 26th and the lady that answered was one of the rudest customer service person I have ever talked to.

Look, this is your typical neighborhood Chinese food takeout restaurant. The high marks are for friendliness, consistency, and always getting exactly what we ordered. Highly recommend for the dumplings and also the chicken wings which are always crispy. Ordered from here dozens of times and never a problem. read more

I have been going to China River for what seems like a lifetime. However recently the quality of food is at best subpar. The pork fried rice has zero taste, little to no pork, and the price has gone way up. Tonight after dinner, we all opened up our fortune cookies, and 3 of the 5 cookies had no fortune, and every one of the cookies were stale. I get the cost of everything has gone up, but quality of taste should not drop. Up your game before you lose a lot of lifetime customers. One star is entirely too many. read more

I was a longtime customer but not after tonight, the food is awful now I had to throw it all away it doesnt even look like Chinese food anymore, Yhey put all my food in one container a whole pupu platter just in one big box with these nasty boneless spare rib that's had this weird sauce all over it, The chicken wings were white like just wings you make at home in the oven not brown how they usually were, The rice has undercooked pieces of pork in it and was flavorless rice, The chicken fingers and crab rangoon seemed like it was from the freezer not freshly cooked, I threw it all away paid $52 dollars and ended up eating a ham sandwich for dinner instead was so disappointed. They will not make it if this is the food they are selling now they wont make it! Their going out of business by years end or have to sell it. So Sad I've been eating here all my life since the 90s.... Absolutely horrible I'm so sickened by what they sold me I think ill never buy chinese food ever again. read more

I didn't have high expectations from this place. Went it for a quick takeout since it's close to my place. It was very hot inside the restaurant, I don't advise anyone to dine-in. They have an open kitchen if you want to watch. There's quite a variety in their menu including some szechuan dishes. I opted for C9 which includes fried rice, chicken wings, boneless spareribs and pepper steak. Wings was quite flavorful and the spareribs was average. The pepper steak was different from what I thought. Their version comes with big slices of green peppers. Serving was big enough for two meals. read more

Best Chinese food in Beverly hand down!! The food was made fresh. Good amount of food in my combination plate. The guy at the counter speaks English and can even speak their language and was able to tell the cook I said the food tastes great! Simply amazing! I won't eat anywhere else!! read more

"Sweet and Sour Pork" turned out to be heavily breaded pork fingers with sweet and sour sauce on the side. Barely edible. Threw most away. read more

It is what it is: A Chinese food take-away establishment that offers large quantities of standard menu and preparation at very reasonable prices. This joint is best as a take-away restaurant: pick up or delivery. China River not a place in which one eats ( unless one is inebriated or incapable of being shamed); it reeks of cooking oils and light griddle smoke. Of all the Chinese joints in Beverly, this place offers the best value for each menu item [especially the numbered combo platters that can be ordered for cheap money during the lengthy lunch period to 4pm). Delivery generally is accurate and completed within a reasonable time period. Overall, you can get fancier and better dishes in a high end Chinese or Taiwanese restaurant; however, for its relatively wide menu range, speed of preparation, accurate delivery, great value and generous portions, China River cannot be surpassed in this neck of the woods. read more

I used to live around the corner from the China River. Certainly not the worst Chinese food but definitely not the best. It's sub-standard. A great fix on a Friday/Saturday night when no one else is serving food downtown and you want to feed that stomach to prevent a hang over....only you wake up the next day to a hang over and an upset stomach. It's a bit sketchy in the summer time when the back/side door on Pond Street is open and you can see the cooks making the food and I must say it doesn't look very clean back there. Go to Beverly Jade right next door for your Chinese fix. read more

China River gets a bad rap. I've been eating here for years and I can understand why. It's kind of like the Chappelle Show skit where ODB is renamed the Ol' Dirty Chinese Restaurant. It's not dirty in here, but it's in a hundred year-old building and nothing is done to make the join look anything close to pretty. There are four or five tables opposite the counter. The only people I've ever seen eating at the tables were people who looked like they were more interested in having a roof over their head for a half hour than they were in eating their meal, if ya dig. Here's my take on the place. If someone says "Chinese food" and you think of crab rangoons and chicken wings, China River is for you. If you think Moo Goo Gai Pan and crisp stir fry, go somewhere else. The fancier you get at China River, the less you'll like your food. If you want fried, American-Chinese food in little take-out cartons, China River is for you. If you want some noodle-ginger-scallion-sesame-wasabi-ahi-mahi mahi dish, go to PF Chang's. read more

If you want Chinese food in Beverly, go to China Jade. China River is just lousy. It's not even your average, Americanized Chinese takeout. There's no flavor to any of the food. The crispy lo mein noodles were stale. Just keeping driving down 1A to China Jade. read more

Ive kept trying the other restaurants for chinese around here. I still cant get over how well they prepare everything here. Its made from scratch all day. N u can watch during slow periods too. Good stuff read more

What a surprise to find this wonderful Chinese restaurant in Beverly! The chicken wings were plump and juicy. Spear ribs were meaty. Crab Rangoon's and egg rolls were crispy and filled with deliciousness! Excellent beef and broccoli and the bread...what Chinese place serves fresh delicious bread? China River does! Highly recommend! Please enjoy and tell them they were highly recommended and keep up the great food service! read more

The food tastes ok and it is priced right but when a restaurant smells like a bathroom I have to wonder if I really want to eat there.

Worlds best General Tso's (Gau's) chicken, just ask for them to cook it extra crispy, and spicey. They define good Hot and Sour Soup if you prefer alot of variety in it. I like all their apps, lunch specials, fried rice, noodles, egg foo young, and it's the best price for chinese in town. Don't dine in... it's not ventilated, and the bathroom is sketchy. China River, they deliver. read more

The food and portions are EXCELLENT and served in a timely manner. The staff are fantastic. Very friendly and courteous. Been coming here for years.. Love the place. They could use an air conditioner in the summer though.. gets so DAMN HOT in the dining area on a hot day. read more

The food here is simply AWFUL! The ingredients are not fresh by any means, and the place is not clean. Stay away! read more

I'm giving china river 4 stars because it's 5 stars when i'm drunk on a Friday or Saturday, but it's only really 3 stars when I'm sober. Honestly nothing special just solid Americanized Chinese food! The crab Rangoon is excellent and so is the general gaos. The wonton soup is decent also. read more

I gave this another try, yesterday. It is good. Yummy Asia is now out-of-business. And China Buffet on Cabot St seems as though it may also be out-of-business, now, too. So China River is once again my favorite Chinese Restaurant in Beverly. read more

Very simple. The food is awful. Ingredients aren't fresh, and the meal that we had made me sick the next day.

Had Kung Pao chicken. 75 % celery, huge disappointment after reading positive reviews.

My favorite Chinese restaurant in Beverly. Being part Chinese myself and living in NYC I KNOW good Chinese food. This place isn't anything special, but it does get the craving satisfied. The lo mein is salty. But my favorite is the sweet and sour chicken. read more

Seriously, the BEST take out Chinese in the area. Obviously we're not talking about authentic stuff here... Americanized takeout is the deal. And in that regard, its definitely five stars. Many claim this but this place just is so. Don't let the appearance fool you. I'll take this place's food over any of the "better" looking places around. The fried shrimp are massive and crispy, generals chicken to die for, and about everything else I have ever ordered is damn near perfection. Once again, for Americanized junkfood Chinese! Seriously. Portions on combination plates are massive. They take it easy on the MSG (if they even use it); you're not dying for water as if you were in the Sahara for days after eating their food. Phone service is friendly and easy to communicate with, and its generally friendly at the pickup counter. I've even gone in there and bought a pint of duck sauce for who knows what...that kind of service. They are open late fri/sat for your drunken munchies too! read more

Man I cant believe this place is still open. Been almost 20 years since I've eaten here. But the food was always on point. Been looking for a place like it ever since. If I ever find myself back in MA again, I'm definitely going to try to make a stop here. read more
