We got take out for lunch today as I've heard good things. We got the pupu for 2 and pork fried rice. The pupu was amazing. We really loved everything in it. The beef teriyaki were tender and the boneless spareribs very flavorful. Great chicken fingers and wings. Overall we were happy! The fried rice left a lot to be desired. It was mushy and flavorless and we threw it out. It wasn't worth keeping. We'll go back but will just avoid their rice which makes me sad because fried rice is my favorite! read more

This is my review solely based on the food. It's your stereotypical American Chinese food. Personally I didn't like my food, the General Gao's chicken was mostly breading. The lo mein also had a weird flavor to me, it was just me though, others found it fine. I don't think the rating is off based on the food itself, I don't think there's any deduction for service. If you're looking for cheap Chinese and you're not too picky, I think this is a good place to check out. read more

I ordered the chicken and shrimp pad Thai, and it was hands down the worst pad Thai I've ever had. There was no sauce on the noodles at all--just plain noodles, and at the bottom of the container was literal water. The chicken and shrimp were completely flavorless, as if they weren't seasoned or cooked with anything. It tasted like boiled noodles with protein tossed in at the end. I actually brought it back to the counter, which I never do. The host asked if I'd ever had pad Thai before, and I told them yes--plenty of times--but this was by far the worst. The food is delicious. The presentation is lovely. The service is good. The ambiance is somewhat mediocre. However, the terms listed for the availability of their specials (see below) are never adhered to. We have been there multiple times on a weekday evening and they have adamantly refused to allow us to order the Dinner Specials, insisting that those are only for take-out. This is probably a language problem since English is obviously not the primary language with the people with whom I've spoken. I prefer not to think that, by not allowing us to order the Dinner Specials, they are forcing us to order more expensive meals. Bottom line... This is false advertising. Their menu presents an offer which their diners are not permitted to accept. Guess you get what you pay for. Prices are reasonable and we pay much more usually at the place we frequent but we wanted to try their dinner specials. Turns out those portions are pretty tiny though and the two items labeled as (Must Try) were not very good. Chicken was chewy, sauce was just meh. Not often you find a place that messes up General Gao's Chicken but this place did it. Super disappointing especially since I've been a big fan of Gourmet Garden in the Swampscott location in the past. Spicy Tuna Rangoon was a nice appetizer though. Only reason for two stars, along with the price being reasonable. Though in the future I'd rather pay more for food I'd actually enjoy. read more

Haven't been since before Covid. Chicken was overcookEd, dry and stringy. I could not chew or swallow it! Sent it back. Spareribs we're very obviously warmed up, more than that they were so blackened I couldn't eat them. I feel badly to report bc they must not have business. The food was very good. However, when we asked the waitress for hot tea, she said, "No tea!" Why is there no tea at a Japanese/Chinese restaurant? I have never been to this place before. Always willing to try somewhere new. I still have yet to find really yummy Chinese food. I love sushi and will try just about anything. The spicy Salmon Naruto was fresh and tasty, and the sunset blvd sushi was also refreshing it did not need soy sauce. The lobster sauce threw me for a loop with peas and carrots, I've never had it like that before. I wouldn't get it again, to say the least. The Rangoon, those tasted like they were cooked then frozen and re heated, they were not hot at all and rather rubbery. The Spare ribs in the appetizer plate were the best part of it. The scorpion bowl, nothing special, it was a pretty standard scorpion bowl. Last but not least the highlight of the entire meal was the hot and sour soup, I can say that is probably one of the best ones I have had. I'd go back for that. read more

I really tried to give them a chance because it is so convenient to pick up on my way home from work.....but it is just not good quality. I just tried this place today and felt compelled to write a review. I had a couple of items I wanted comment on. 1) Limited selection - they only run the buffet at noon and the selection was small. No soup, a few standard dishes, some sushi. Two ice cream flavors. What food they had was good, just not many choices. The best was the sushi which actually had some fish in it. Unusual in this area at lunch buffet 2) Cost - $10.50 ($11.22 with tax) for a Chinese lunch buffet is high in my area and with such limited choice... not worth it 3) Waitress - I gave her a $20 for a $11.22 lunch. She asked me if I wanted change. I said yes.... like I would tip the rest on a $10.00 lunch. She returns $8.00 (wheres the other $.78?). I did give her a small tip but she skimmed that $.78 off the top. Im betting the change was was on the register but never saw the tray. I should have said something at the time but didnt. I dont like being ripped off and should have just counted the amount she skimmed as her tip. Summary - food was ok but limited. However I will never go there again due to her ripping me off. This location used to be the Mandarin, which was a pretty good Chinese restaurant. Now it's the "Gourmet Mandarin", has had a makeover (new paint, furniture), and is under new management. That's the good part. The bad part is that the quality under new ownership has gone downhill. (Note: I have been to China several times for business and have been a fan of Chinese food for decades.) Service was good but I had a nervous moments when I realized that the waitress's English was pretty shaky. All I can say in Mandarin is "thank you" (xixi ne), which would have made for a very short conversation. She knew the menu, fortunately, so we were able to order. A few favorites such as Garlic-flavored Chicken are not on the new menu, which is shorter than the old menu and somewhat disorganized and disappointing. We ordered two Tsing Tao beers, Peking Ravioli as an appetizer, Orange-flavored Chicken, and White Rice to share. The Peking Ravioli was overcooked; the dough was thick, almost burned, and chewy. The sauce on the orange-flavored chicken (dark meat from chicken thighs) was gooey and arguably gluey in consistency. Flavor was so-so. The rice was good. The meal overall was unappetizing, unappealing, and overpriced. We're not going back. read more

DO NOT RECOMMEND! Came here for my lunch break because I work in the plaza. The lady who was serving me was in a rush for absolutely no reason. It's 12:55 in the afternoon. She kept walking away because I was having a hard time understanding her English. She was getting annoyed with me. Told her I was allergic to something she kept insisting to change what I wanted instead of them making something fresh without it. She kept saying the food is already done. I cannot change it. She repeated herself multiple times until I choose to order something differently. I would not recommend coming here. Not very accommodating. She did not greet me or anything. I've probably tried about half of their rolls by now and can say I haven't had one yet that I didn't like! We always order the same food and each time I get my chicken lettuce wraps I get a smaller and smaller portion. I literally got 3 times as much at the Beverly location. My husband ordered General Gso chicken and got double the amount as well. If you're going to come here, eat at their resteraunt. Food is good, and in person good portions. I have been going to this restaurant since I was a little kid. The renovations are fabulous. It is very modern and open concept. The lighting is warm and the whole place is cozy and intimate yet sleek. The bar is especially very fancy and is separate from the dining room. The seating is extremely comfortable. The food is better than any other Chinese place I been to in the area...and I purposely go to other Chinese restaurants to compare dishes. Gourmet Gardens has very lovely presentations as well. Plus portions that fit the bill. Any time I'm going out to lunch with friends or family or dates I bring them to Gourmet Gardens in Danvers. The acoustics are great. No matter how many people there are it does not get loud. So I also would reccomend the restaurant for any business endeavors. This is my all time favorite restaurant. I go here at least twice a month at least. read more

I have to agree with previous post the service does SUCKS. The waiter brought my sister and myself water and didn't even have the courtesy to put drinks in front of us, she put them in front of the 2 empty chairs. Usually, I wouldn't leave such a bad review but I have to for this time. Even the hostess at the front door, obviously forgot that her jobs was to meet and greet as well, but not to worry because she SUCKED as well. My co workers and I like to go out for Chinese for lunch on occasion. Our must go to place has always been Gourmet Garden in Danvers. The food is always fresh and hot and the service is excellent. Whether it is the buffet or off the menu, the food is always terrific. On top of that the fresh sushi is prepared frequently at the sushi bar and the ice cream is always a nice way end the meal.
