This used to be one of our favorite places to visit but over the past 2 visits, our opinion has changed. Met family and friends for a birthday celebration and was very disappointed with the food, rice was cold and a weird Cheetos like color to it. Chicken was overcooked and hard to eat. Service was poor there were only eight of us and server did not offer drink refills or check to see how the food was she sat at a booth and was on her phone the whole time we were there. When it was time to pay the bill we were surprised at the total and a gratuity of $9 was added(which we did not find out about until receiving receipt) and cashier then asked if we were going to leave a tip which we did and then got receipt showing the gratuity. As I mentioned before this was one of our favorite places to go and enjoy a meal with family and friends, but after tonight's experience, I don't think will be back which is really sad because it is a family owned small business and have noticed that there parking lot used to be full just about every time you drove by and now there were only 12 people in the restaurant the 2 hours we were there. Something told me not to eat here when I heard someone else say they had a nasty experience with their food but I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt and I ordered from here anyways. Absolute regret! I bit into one of my egg rolls and a string of something is hanging from the piece I bit off to the egg roll. My first thought was it was a piece of vegetable of some sort but then after a few seconds I realized it was a long white strand of hair that even my coworker could see from across the room! Great Chinese food at a great value, this place doesn't disappoint. China Mex is an Odessa favorite, a hole in the wall restaurant with great food. We ordered the Spicy Chicken and Fried Rice and also the Emperor Fried Rice which includes chicken, beef and shrimp...the food was excellent however the service in the beginning not so much. We came inside during lunch hour and took about 10 minutes us standing there before we were directed to a table. We sat at our table for about another 10 minutes before we were asked what to drink and given menus. Five minutes later we were given our waters and asked if we wanted to order and we did so immediately to make up lost time. The food came out 10 minutes later and that's were my rating goes up to 4 stars. Been years I've eaten here, the portions are great and so is the food, now only if they had a drive thru it would be excellent. read more

Called ahead of time to see if they were open and they said they close at 6:30. Went in and waited for the host to get seated...... Finally, the busser seated us and brought our drinks. After being seated for over 15 minutes a few more customers came in and were seated. The restaurant was not busy at all and we still haven't been approached. The waiter looked at me straight in the eyes and turned around and went into the kitchen. Cool, maybe she had something to do. Seen here on the phone in the kitchen which was in my view. The menu was sticky, table was sticky, dead flys in the window seals. Empty napkin dispenser. Bad service, dirty dining area, they changed my out look on them forsure. I would not eat there again. When I placed the order I told her I wanted 3 separate orders 4 meals with appetizers as well. When I got there she had everything sitting on the counter all together and not even separated as we requested. When took our food went back to eat it. We order the 2 hot spicy chicken which was very dry not the greatest. The sesame chicken and orange chicken same thing. The egg rolls were sitting in a bottom of grease. The food was horrible. Then we took it home and when one of us went to make left overs the food literally looked rotten and smelled. We all have been very sick since then. I do not recommend them at all. China Mex is one of the best hidden gems in Odessa. While it's hours aren't conducive to showing off their great food, it is an awesome place to go for lunch or order takeout for an evening in. The food is delicious Americanized Chinese food that comes with all of the staples. One could argue that their fried rice is the best in Odessa, but it just depends on who is on their game at the time. China Mex is very consistent in their quality and the staff is always polite. While I would not suggest coming here if you're on a strict diet, I say throw caution to the wind and don't let the outward appearance scare you off! China Mex will be one of your favorites in town, especially in the Chinese food category. read more

Food was always great. The long waite was nothing to us we would waite patiently! Small -crowded But no longer stopping by rude,in a huge rush, wrong order ! My favorite Shrimp, rice was burned ,and served to us just like that (who eats burned smoked rice)And my order was over charged! Expect to use up your entire lunch hour plus 30 more minutes. There is so much going on in the kitchen that you can see in the face or the servers that they are flustered and confused. The chicken lo mein is good but do not add soy sauce , it is already salty. Egg rolls were good and crunchy. Drink your beverage slow because even after an hour they won't refill it for you because they are too busy with Togo orders and helping the dining room. The food is good but the service deserves a $1 tip. If you don't get there by 11:30 am , go somewhere else because the seating area is very limited. read more

The egg drop soup was good. I ordered Mongolian beef and there was almost no beef. What the hell? I understand that sometimes restaurants want to save some money but if I wanted Mongolian cabbage then that is what I would have asked for. The place is small and very crowded. The food is great, but the staff is rude, the food is overpriced, and the wait for your food is long.

I was cautious about trying this place due to the name. Definitely different than the other Chinese offerings in Odessa. Their Emperor Lo Mein is to die for! Unfortunately they are not the most accurate when taking orders - never have I been able to get home with my take-out without something either missing from the order or something being wrong (such as receiving fried rice instead of Lo Mein). Went early for lunch and had to wait 50 minutes for our entrees. When we got there only two other tables were seated. Out of the three orders one was wrong and when I pointed it out to our server she argued with me and said she would have it remade. I asked to just have the item removed from our bill since I didn't have time to wait. When she brought our ticket she once again had to show me what she had written down for my order. This place has the absolute most ignorant rudest staff I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. It's like they're high all the time. You can never call in your order because they literally refuse to answer the phone most of the time. I've stood there waiting for my food and watched them ignore the phone. The best thing I can say about this place is that they do cook the food to order and it is average tasting. The thing about it though is you lose your appetite when a roach crawls across the wall right next to your face, which is what happened to me! Also, it's very crowded and uncomfortable in there. I went to Odessa with my wife to visit her family and we decided to check out China Mex. Granted, it is called China "Mex" which caters chinese food to Mexicans. The food here however is nasty! The chow mein was too salty and the garlic powder they poured on the dish takes away any flavor it has. The egg rolls and crab puffs are nothing to write home about. While I was there, it took over 8 minutes for the waitress to just come over. This is probably the WORST chinese restaurant I have ever been to. Do yourself the favor and stay away. This is a small well visited restaurant and the food isn't bad. It is not quite the way I like my Chinese though. The fried rice is very buttery (my dining partner considered this a bonus) and my garlic chicken was very sweet. I prefer savory. They no longer carry Mexican on their menu but they do have a good selection of Chinese dishes. The serving sizes are very generous, two to three meals per entre. The food arrived hot, fresh, and fast despite a full dining room. The spicy dishes are not overly spicy but there's sriracha and kill-small-children hot mustard available to make you weep. The service was excellent, and the prices were very fair considering the amount of food. Parking filled up but we parked on the adjacent street with no problem.
