My family has been on a fried chicken kick lately, but there are no places close to our home. As a result, we have to drive a bit to satisfy our craving. We usually go to Chicken Express in Lakeway. The staff there is always friendly, and the food is consistently warm and delicious. We love their fried chicken and chicken tenders, and we typically order the family meal, which includes two sides. Our favorite side is their green beans; we're not sure what they do to make them so good, but we absolutely love them. We also enjoy their soft, fluffy rolls. The drive-thru service is very efficient as well. If you're in the mood for fried chicken, this place should definitely be on your list! read more

I've never been to a Chicken Express. Thought I would pop in and check out what they are all about. There's a Randall's grocery store on one side, and a gas station on the other side. Chicken Express lot is private. I noticed it was pretty dark too. I went inside and looked over their menu. I got a 2 piece with a biscuit. He asked what I wanted as far as the chicken goes. I asked for 2 thighs. As I looked around at the condiments. I say, sauce and honey packets and a few other things. I grabbed a honey packed for my biscuit. My order was ready rather quickly. I found a seat and started in. The biscuit is small. But my whole meal was pretty inexpensive, I wasn't expecting a large biscuit. It was fine enough for me at the moment. I squeezed out some of the honey on one side. Not bad with honey. It was good without honey too. The 2 chicken thighs were really good. Warm, juicy, and the skin part was crunchy with a light fried taste. Meal was pretty decent, inexpensive, and filling. read more

I'm not certain if it had just been a really long time since I'd visited Chicken Express, but I think their food has really improved. I remember thinking it was just a-okay before. Now, if I feel like a yummy, greasy indulgent, cheat meal, Chicken Express pops to the top of the list. Their chicken comes out piping hot and super crispy. Absolutely adore their dinner rolls. If getting chicken, adding pickled jalapenos is a must for me. I recently ordered fried catfish á la carte. Received two massive! fillets (too much food honestly) and tasty little sweet corn hush puppies. For a fast food chain, I am super impressed. And the prices are great. It's been about 20 years since I've had Chicken Express. Let's just say that my reunion with them was much better than most high school reunions. I went classic with the tenders box: fries, a biscuit, and those golden, crispy tenders. One bite in and I was immediately taken back to small town love of all things rolls and tenders and gravy and fried. Both the tenders and fries were piping hot, crunchy on the outside, and so very good. Then came the moment: dunking a fresh tender into that creamy gravy. First bite = straight up time travel. The mixed emotions of "oh, my heart!" and "oh... my heart..." (but I'm good with the whole "treat y'self" mentality from time to time) To add, every single employee was polite, upbeat, and did a great job from the moment I walked in to the "thanks for coming by! enjoy your meal" as I walked out. These kiddos are doing an excellent job. Bottom line: 20 years later, Chicken Express still slaps. It's not health food -- it's happiness food. Trash food. All of the food was old and cold. Everything was stale. Nothing was fresh, chicken, fries, or okra. The worst part is the wait is longer than 10 minutes which means food should be fresh. As a regular here, spending about $100 a month, I'm beyond disappointed with tonight's service. I always order the 3 filet dinner, and tonight I added an extra filet, an extra roll, two gravies, and a gallon of sweet tea, totaling around $33. I'm not here to complain about the price--your food is good, and I'm happy to pay for it. But your service? Utterly terrible. The only exception is the older lady working there--she's a gem and the only one who apologized when she met me at the drive-through. I asked, as always, for no included sauces to avoid waste but requested two gravies (which I'm happy to pay for). Last time, I was told I couldn't even get gravy despite offering to pay. Tonight, I didn't receive either gravy, and I had to remind them at the window to include the gallon of tea I paid for. Clearly, I need to check my entire order every time since the staff can't get it right the first time. I drove back, wasting gas, only to find a packed drive-through and a closed seating area. I knocked politely on the front door to resolve the issue quickly, but I was met with argument and resistance. No receipt was provided, so I had no proof of purchase, yet the staff argued for 10 minutes instead of just bringing the gravies to the door. They insisted I wait in the drive-through line again until I finally convinced them to bring it out. This is Lakeway, not a high-crime area. There's no need for employees to act like I'm a threat over two gravies. The older lady's apology was appreciated, but it's not enough--no effort was made to make this right or "WOW" the customer. I expect better as a loyal customer. Train your staff to handle simple mistakes with professionalism and competence. read more

In all honesty I reviewed this place last year negatively. Small pieces of chicken, poor uninterested staff., Today I visited and it is evident they are working to improve. Oscar was a friendly attentive cashier. Araceli, his manager was anxious to provide a clean restaurant with good food. She does a good job. I'm from California and my boyfriend took me here to try it out! Below is my honest review - Food - 3/5 . It was okay for me. I got the spicy chicken tenders with mashed potatoes, gravy, corn nuggets and sweet tea. It wasn't bad but it wasn't tasty for me. I would still prefer Chick Fil A and Raising Canes. Service - 4/5. The server / cashier was nice and accommodating but wasn't enthusiastic Bathroom - 4/5 Ambiance - 9/14/24 on a Saturday at around noon ish and it wasn't busy at all. My order was simple however, he could not understand that I wanted mash potaotes. He kept saying Okra. When he repeated my order back, again I said, no - mashed potatoes NOT Okra. Like another Yelper, I don't write reviews for fast food joints but Chicken Express deserves one just for their CORN NUGGETS. They may not look like much but they are soooooo good. I also recommend the fried pickles. The chicken is crispy and tasty that I personally don't think they need to be dipped into the gravy. It also looks like they have a spicy option now. I usually opt for the roll over the biscuit - a hint of sweetness that makes your tastebuds say YASSS. The cashiers have always been friendly and it appears to be a clean establishment. But back to those corn nuggets.... I've legit gone through the drive up JUST for a family size order of these babies. The Drive-Thru was extremely slow tonight. They only offer Drive-Thru at this location, so what they need to do is have customers with large orders go ahead and make their order, but then advise them to pull off to the side and the restaurant will bring their order to them. All of us placing smaller orders were stuck in line and it was ridiculous. 30 minute wait for a 3 piece dinner! The chicken is good but corporate needs to tell the Drive Thru how to fulfill orders more efficiently. read more

YUMMMMY! This is our go-to post lake drunk munch spot! Now yes, I know, I'm a vegetarian writing this review, but back in my younger days I was quite the meat-eater (please let the jokes alone and hear me out). This place serves up hot, fresh, fattening, yummy food. I've been coming to Chicken E since I was a wee lad, and have been coming to this location since 2006 (and trust, living a half mile from this place was no easy task for my diet). You can always bank on getting an extra tender or two in your meal as well. I am sad that they no longer have their hot mustard as it was heavenly, but that doesn't ruin anything when it comes to ranking this as a fast food staple for me. read more

Awful employee relationship with customers. The reason the people as well as the cows like the chicken place down the street is that, yes, they have pretty good chicken, but YES, that other place knows how to treat customers. When I called to say that I was returning because Chicken Express did not complete my order, I never once heard anything like, "Come on back with your receipt and we will take care of you. So sorry we didn't get it right." What I heard from the Chicken Express employees was that it was all my fault and I shouldn't expect for them to fix the problem. The first thing out of the young "man's" mouth was that he could refuse service to anyone, and that he was the son of the owner and that I should get out of his line and be on my way and that I shouldn't make a fuss about their food and that nobody else ever complained. When I asked for his father's phone number so I could let him know what a fine job his son was doing to keep customers, the young "man" refused to provide me with the number (of course). I will do just about ANYTHING to please my fiancé. one of those things is to go to Chicken Express and buy her lunch when asked but i better not forget the SWEETENED ICE TEA!! She is beyond a fan of it and won't drink any other ice tea around. Personally I find their prices a little high but worth the price. Their chicken fingers are terrific and their side dishes are all above average. I will also say that their customer service is outstanding, often going above and beyond what is to be expected. Many times while ordering a gallon of tea in the drive through with a few cars ahead of me, someone will come to my car and bring me my tea so i don't have to wait in line longer than i would expect. It goes straight to voice-mail and it's not receiving any messages, it's not active. The food was terrible besides the drink, and they didn't add any mini jalapeño poppers. Every time I go through the drive thru they forget to give me part of my order. Today i went inside and ordered. When I received my hush puppies they were burnt.
