On a recent trip from KC to Joplin, I planned my return route and timing so I could dine at Chicken Annie's. I had heard about it all my life and had read and seen stories about them and the big chicken war with their neighbor Chicken Mary's. I arrived around 6:30 pm on a Thursday night and was the only party in the massive building, although it was only 2 weeks after they started to allow in-store seating during the Covid -19 pandemic. Three other groups did arrive before we left. I was extremely impressed with the pricing, I could tell that I wasn't anywhere near the big city and the service matched. The masked waitress was extremely courteous and efficient and the hostess was the epitome of country charm. That's really about the only thing that was above average; cost and service. We started with an order of onion rings and the complimentary basket of white bread slices and packaged butter. The O rings was actually a bowl of fried strips and were pretty tasty dipped into some ranch dressing - the suggested dipping sauce - we were in the Mid-West after all. My side salad soon arrived to distract me away from the greasy rings. It was nothing more than bagged lettuce poured into a bowl with a portion control packet of 1000 Island dressing - SAD. My dinner arrived shortly there after - 3 piece mixed (leg, wing and thigh) and a baked potato and for $2, I added some gizzards. The potato was small and was accompanied with a small packet of margarine - nothing else. The gizzards were chewy and tough and reminded me why I never liked gizzards until Go Chicken Go in KC changed my mind. The chicken pieces were fairly small yet hot and crispy. The coating and the interior were pretty bland. There was nothing about this meal that gave me anything near a "wow" factor. I could only wonder how come all the decades of hype and national exposure? If I lived locally, I would return to try other items, simply because the price is right and there isn't a lot of options in Pittsburg, KS; but I'll be damned to know why anyone would drive any distance to eat here. If you are heading north thru Pittsburg and have a hankering for fried chicken; keep driving a couple more hours to KC and eat at Go Chicken Go, Stroud's or Gus's. Don't believe the hype.

Chicken. Yum! Chicken livers. Yum! Onion ring strings. Yum! German cole slaw. Yum! See a pattern? The food is good. The food is real good. The chicken is always hot, juicy and not over breaded. I am not gonna choose which is best. The dark meat is just as good as the white. The selection of various pieces is infinite and you get two sides with each plate. Just get the German cole slaw and whatever else suits your fancy. They have fried shrimp and fish for the sorta vegetarians in your life. We've never had bad service and even when busy we've never had to wait too long. People drive from all over the area to eat here and have for generations. Make it a destination. Have some sweet tea and enjoy.

Finally made it to Chicken Annie's and glad we did! Other reviews were right-don't skip the onion rings! The service was wonderful, attentive but not intrusive. The food was delicious! Chicken was not over breaded so you could enjoy the flavor of the meat. It's a bit off the beaten path but well worth it!

This place is a Pittsburg standard. Don't come looking for a fancy place, but you will have some good ol' fashioned fried chicken.

While the contests had to pick a winner, I must say that I really enjoyed the chicken offerings from both places. The chicken was well prepared, juicy and the crust was delicious. You cannot go wrong when having food from here. A five star experience!

Our first stop was Chicken Annie's. The next night we went to Chicken Mary's. Both were very good in many ways. Service at both was efficient and friendly, but our server at Mary's was the most exceptional. Both restaurants have an old fashioned family eatery vibe, but Mary's was just a tiny bit nicer. At both restaurants the water had a slightly unusual off-note that was also noticeable in the iced tea. Both restaurants offer white bread from a well-known local Italian bakery. Honestly, it was no more special than any grocery store white bread. At Annie's it was fresher. At Mary's a bit stale. My wife tried the German potato salad at both and proclaimed Annie's far superior. We both had green beans at both restaurants. Both were very good. My wife liked Annie's the best. I preferred Mary's. Strangely, neither restaurant had real butter as an option, only the chemically "whipped spread" so my baked potato was untried. The star of the show is supposed to be the chicken. Portions were generous with both. The breading at Annie's was crustier. The breading at Mary's was flakier and lighter. The chicken at both was moist, but even juicier at Mary's. For this reason my wife and I agreed that Mary's was the winner of our contest. Many people have told us that one or another of these restaurants has "the best fried chicken I've ever had." Honestly, we can't agree. The fried chicken at the grocery store deli near our Roeland Park home is just as good. We have found the Brookeville Hotel in Abeline, Rye on the Plaza in Kansas City, and Stroud's in Overland Park to be infinitely superior to both Annie's and Mary's.

Who's Pichler and who's Annie? If you dine there, read the back of the menu and you'll be educated. Secondly, if you drive by you'll likely see the place surrounded with cars and pickup trucks. That's usually a good sign. Our party of five waited about 15 minutes for a table at 5:30 pm. Not bad on a Saturday night. Seating is at mostly larger tables, and the entire place has a bit of a multi-room cafeteria feel. Comfortable, but a bit chopped up and crowded. They're not striving for romantic dinners. We started out with an order of their Onion Rings. Do not skip this step! And make it a large! You'll thank me for that tip. Ordering the chicken is a bit confusing, especially when your server tells you that the two thigh, one drumstick dinner is their white meat option (bless her, she said "This is my first week, I'm still learning the menu."). The chicken is very good - crispy, tender, and juicy. But don't expect large. These pieces must come from a five pound bird. The sides I ordered were their house coleslaw and potato salad. Both old German recipes. I'd recommend skipping these. The slaw was garlic heavy and sour and the potato salad had very little taste. It's not that they're wrong, just unexpected and not that good for my taste. But you may feel differently. Somehow these recipes have survived for decades! Overall, I rated Pichler's above average. It's an experience with good chicken, good service, great onion rings, and a damn interesting name!

We got in right at opening, and by the time that we left at 1230, it was looking pretty busy. We ordered and waited for a good 20 min before our meal came out. The ice they use is very crushed, almost a slush. Chicken is steaming hot and super fresh. Nice crunch. The batter seasoning is rather plain, but salted. Loved their green beans and coleslaw. The slaw was very vinegary and dryer. Not like the mayo doused slaw you may be used to. Service was excellent. We had a wonderful waitress who made sure our orders were accurate and that our drinks were full

First of all, the bar height only tables are not conducive to bringing small kids to a restaurant. The adults were nervous trying to make sure they didn't fall off the bar height chairs. I had the burger with the egg on it. Loved everything about this burger. Both burger and egg cooked perfectly. Wife had the Hawaiian burger, which she thought was delicious. Brother-in-law had the burger with the mac and cheese with the mac and cheese on the side; he absolutely raved about the mac and cheese. For appetizers, we bought the pepperjack bites and the spicy green beans. The green beans were fabulous, although I would have enjoyed dipping them in a spicier ranch than regular ranch, although it was very good ranch. We all ordered the french fries and onion rings with our dishes. All of us agreed both the rings and the fries were on the greasy side. I think the greasiness of the fries is what gave my stomach some issues later. The bartender who took care of me paying the bill was very nice. Big, welcoming, friendly smile; pleasant attitude and communication. The service industry needs more people like this guy. Would definitely try this place again to try something else on their vast menu. Might have to not eat for about two days so I can try the double patty hamburger with the fried chicken in the middle of the sandwich. Or their fried peanut butter and jelly. Or wings with their multitude of flavors of sauces and spices.
