We travel down to Pittsburgh about every three months and see the signs for the different chicken places in the area and finally made the decision to stop in and try one. My girlfriend used to live in Pittsburgh 20+ years ago and said she remembered that Barto's was her favorite, so that's why we tried it. My first time trying any of the options and I would say I was pleasantly surprised. Very very inexpensive for the amount of food that we received. We ordered the onion rings as an appetizer, and they were wonderful a huge portion, probably ate more than I should have, but I couldn't stop, lol. Easily enough for four people, but the two of us handled it well I ordered the four piece chicken dinner, knowing that we would be taking some home, I love white meat. My girl loves dark meat, so I ordered a little of both. To my surprise when you order white meat, they automatically give you two breasts, which is unusual for a chicken place because normally they throw in a wing instead which I find to be kind of a waste. I was very happy to hear that two breasts were normal. The price for that order of four pieces of chicken was only about $12, amazing. They were cooked perfectly. Had a wonderful flavor And were very large. The meal comes with two sides. I almost forgot we ordered some chicken livers and gizzards, they have a half-and-half selection so that was perfect. A huge portion way more than we needed so we took quite a bit of that home. I must say, we were pleasantly surprised with the amount of food and the reasonable price they have. Definitely a place to visit if you're in the area.

Everyone working here is very very nice, and it was clean. Thats all this place going for it though really. They don't season anything. Gizzards, livers, onion rings, and mushrooms are all pretty much the same. Same 0 seasoning breading on everything. Anyone that ordered chicken got the same breading on that as well. So you're basically just eating the same thing for almost everything you order. They bring out bread to snack on, but we didn't get ours til 1 min before all the main food arrived. Drink orders took 20 mins to take and receive. Didn't place food order for about 45 mins. Arrived at 6pm, and didn't get food until 7:15-7:20. Waitress was trying, but there was only one of them for about 45 people. Drank my water when I first arrived, never saw another one the entire time. Main course for me was the steak. Was cooked 100% perfectly medium rare. Was flawless on the cooking part. They do not use butter, actual garlic, or anything else really though. Just tasted like plain medium rare streak with nothing else. Fry's were the same issue as everything else. Boring and bland. Side salad was just a tiny bowl of shredded ice burg lettuce with some carrots on top. The look, feel and flavor of this place reminds me of a very boring small menu version of Cracker Barrel. While I love steak, it's very odd that the best thing at a fried chicken place, was their steak, and it wasn't great.

"Can I help you with the menu?" Carla the bartender asked. "Sure," I said. There were just so many fried chicken combinations, I couldn't decide. Ended up with two perfectly crispy thighs and a side of chicken livers....exactly what I wanted! Some of the best I've ever had. It didn't hurt that the beer was served in an ice cold glass.

    Standard 1/4-chicken plate.

Southeast Kansas is famous for its fried chicken. If you want the best, you need to have the chicken from Barto's!

This is the best fried chicken in the United states. Though all the other chicken places in the area come in a close second.

This is NOT your Grandma's fried chicken of your youth. The crust is a hard covering and not very tasty. Would not eat here again.

We parked across the street and walked over funny enough with another group so when we entered they thought we were all together. The Hostess told us it would be a few minutes for our party(4). We were seated in the bar area at a table that had a long booth seat down the wall and then 2 chairs. The vibe of the restaurant was cool, it was kind of dark and had cool lanterns in the tall windows, black and white posters of Pitt State Gorillas throughout that were fun. The was a lounge area in the back with a couch/chairs to sit and hang out while you're having drinks. Our server was friendly and greeted us promptly. She recommended a drink when I asked her which of the two I was contemplating-I went with the basil lemonade. My friend's drinks were a Moscow Mule, Amaretto Sour and a Paloma-we all enjoyed our cocktails. For dinner I went with the Steak Frites, which was delicious! My friend's dinner-1 had the crab cakes(app)with a side salad. 1 had the club sandwich and lastly one had the pork chop dinner(which looked amazing) We all had a bite or two of the crab cakes which were fantastic! Over all we all enjoyed our meal and the vibe of the restaurant. I would recommend trying this place out if you're in the area.

As you walk in to the right, there's some small wall humidors, pipe tobacco, various torches, cutters, etc. straight ahead is a few small smoking rooms, few TVs (one to a room, which I like), to the left is the counter and a small walk in humidor. The owner/operator is a pleasant chap and knows his way around cigars. He has a good selection of sticks that'll keep you busy for more than a few smoking sessions if you tried something new every time. I think the smoking rooms could use a few more ashtrays, cutters and lighters but I usually went during the day so maybe he puts more out during peak times. Upstairs is the members only section. There's a nonmembers cutting fee to smoke in the lounge. Not a fan of those in general but Joplin isn't exactly a high volume city so it's understandable. I will for sure return when I'm back in Joplin. Loved the places and loved chopping it up with the locals when I stopped by.

We started out with two appetizers, Fried Ravioli & Popcorn Shrimp Basket. To be honest the Fried Ravioli wasn't worth ordering. Pretty much flavorless! The menu read stuffed with cheese & jalapenos. I don't think either existed in the ravioli. Had great potential but just didn't deliver. The Popcorn Shrimp was a step up and we're actually pretty good. The dipping sauce was rather strange - it seemed to be a spicy teriyaki which was okay just not a dipping sauce I expected. Maybe a choice of sauces would be a better option. Four of the 5 choose burgers and I think everyone truly enjoyed their choice. I chose the KC Special - pastrami burnt ends, w/two 1/4 lb burgers with cheese and a side of Freedom Fries. Two others chose the Heavenly Bacon and the last picked the Mushroom Burger. I think it's fair to say everyone enjoyed their burger. The lone dissenter felt the need to be on the healthier side and he went with the salmon. He described it as dry and over cooked. Luckily he choose the French Onion soup as a starter and he said it was one of the best soups he's had! Another one in the group also ordered the same and he said it was delicious. I'm mad at myself for not ordering because that is one of my favorites and can't believe I actually passed on it! Our server was GG and she was very pleasant and she was good at checking in on us to make sure we were doing okay. We enjoyed her waiting on us for our lunch meal. If we ever make our way to Pittsburg again I think I would definitely try this place again and look at trying other items on the menu!
