We parked across the street and walked over funny enough with another group so when we entered they thought we were all together. The Hostess told us it would be a few minutes for our party(4). We were seated in the bar area at a table that had a long booth seat down the wall and then 2 chairs. The vibe of the restaurant was cool, it was kind of dark and had cool lanterns in the tall windows, black and white posters of Pitt State Gorillas throughout that were fun. The was a lounge area in the back with a couch/chairs to sit and hang out while you're having drinks. Our server was friendly and greeted us promptly. She recommended a drink when I asked her which of the two I was contemplating-I went with the basil lemonade. My friend's drinks were a Moscow Mule, Amaretto Sour and a Paloma-we all enjoyed our cocktails. For dinner I went with the Steak Frites, which was delicious! My friend's dinner-1 had the crab cakes(app)with a side salad. 1 had the club sandwich and lastly one had the pork chop dinner(which looked amazing) We all had a bite or two of the crab cakes which were fantastic! Over all we all enjoyed our meal and the vibe of the restaurant. I would recommend trying this place out if you're in the area.

As far as the bar, the place has been packed every time we visit. People are lined up around the bar 5 - 6 deep and the bar staff are slammin. Drink specials are pretty alright - always a good deal on shots or special drinks. Cherry limeades seem pretty popular but that's not for me. There's a strong pour and a lot of energy going into making sure everyone has a good time. On our last visit, my daughter (college mom here) ordered a rum and coke. The bar tender added a lime and she looked at him in horror. She's allergic to limes. Even with a gazillion people waiting, he caught her look and without prompting immediately made her a new drink with no lime. He gifted the rum and coke with lime to my husband and off we went, but not before making sure to thank him on the gratuity line. He didn't have to do that and the fact he did it without an exchange of words and while navigating a big crowd - well, it was beyond expectation. Appreciate the service, the drinks, the opportunity to spend time with our college kiddos in a space they feel safe and comfortable.

Our first stop was Chicken Annie's. The next night we went to Chicken Mary's. Both were very good in many ways. Service at both was efficient and friendly, but our server at Mary's was the most exceptional. Both restaurants have an old fashioned family eatery vibe, but Mary's was just a tiny bit nicer. At both restaurants the water had a slightly unusual off-note that was also noticeable in the iced tea. Both restaurants offer white bread from a well-known local Italian bakery. Honestly, it was no more special than any grocery store white bread. At Annie's it was fresher. At Mary's a bit stale. My wife tried the German potato salad at both and proclaimed Annie's far superior. We both had green beans at both restaurants. Both were very good. My wife liked Annie's the best. I preferred Mary's. Strangely, neither restaurant had real butter as an option, only the chemically "whipped spread" so my baked potato was untried. The star of the show is supposed to be the chicken. Portions were generous with both. The breading at Annie's was crustier. The breading at Mary's was flakier and lighter. The chicken at both was moist, but even juicier at Mary's. For this reason my wife and I agreed that Mary's was the winner of our contest. Many people have told us that one or another of these restaurants has "the best fried chicken I've ever had." Honestly, we can't agree. The fried chicken at the grocery store deli near our Roeland Park home is just as good. We have found the Brookeville Hotel in Abeline, Rye on the Plaza in Kansas City, and Stroud's in Overland Park to be infinitely superior to both Annie's and Mary's.
