Since I wrote my first review in 2013, the restaurant is now in a new and larger location. I don't especially like the interior/exterior, but the food is excellent. I highly recommend the Pollo Tapatio, which I get every time we are there. Service is usually spot on, especially when the owner is there. This is our favorite Mexican restaurant in the Pittsburg/Fort Scott area. You have to go to Joplin or Springfield to find better. There is another restaurant in Lamar by the same name, but the food is not the same, way too salty! read more

We have tried several Mexican restaurants in the area and El Caballo is by far the best! The chips and salsa are great and the cheese dip has a spicy kick to it. They have a large menu with so many tasty options. You can't go wrong - fajitas, chicken & rice, burritos, tacos, molcajete, everything is yummy! Portion sizes are huge, too. I always bring home leftovers. They have specials on food and drinks every day. Their margaritas are the bomb - strong and not too sweet! Service is ALWAYS fast even on very busy nights. This place even after being away from the area for 4 years is still my favorite go to place for great authentic Mexican cuisine. Staff are very friendly and are very prompt and professional. The atmosphere is very relaxing but also a place to have a great time for drinks with family or friends. You always get plenty of food on your plate. The refried beans are smooth and creamy. My personal favorite is the Leon cheese steak. Comes with three tortillas filled with streak meat and grilled onions covered with white queso cheese on top served with lettuce shredded cheese sour cream and Mexican rice. The prices are also reasonable and they have specials everyday. Also they have great salsa and fresh chips that always come out nice and hot. The salsa itself has a great flavor and has just the right amount of flavor and heat it is very mild. Location is in a good spot. And there is plenty of parking in and around the building. read more

We did a group of five on a Sunday evening to check out their margaritas. We sampled three other Mexican restaurants that night and this place had the best margarita in town, by far. The server said they make their mix homemade. Their salsa wasn't the best, but I still can't wait until the next time I'm there so I can try more drinks. The picture shows a small margarita that was $2 and the regular that was $4ish. We were in town for a recruiting event and received a recommendation to try this place out, so our group decided to stop in for dinner! Our table shared the chips, salsa, and queso, (the queso was excellent). For dinner, I had the steak fajitas which were reminiscent of visiting the river walk down in San Antonio. The food is definitely more of Tex-mex, but still quite delicious -- I would definitely recommend stopping in! read more

We were in town for my nephew's college graduation from Pitt and brought a large group over for dinner after the graduation ceremony. My sister had made a reservation and the place was super busy (probably with other graduates and their families). We had to wait a little bit for our table to be ready, but not very long for such a large party on such a busy night. The food was good, prices are really reasonable (maybe that's a northeastern perspective, but still seemed cheap) and the service was quick and efficient. They even had a live musician. This was so much better on this visit! I highly recommend asking for the hot salsa to mix in with what they bring to the table - when they tell you to be careful, take heed! Mix in a little at a time because it is spicy for sure but delicious! The chips were hot and fresh and kept coming! Margaritas were ok - we got the .99 special and should have gone with something off the regular menu but at .99 and after 1 - you don't really care. The food was really good. The taco had a crispy shell and the beef was perfectly seasoned. The chili relleno was perfection - the pepper was tender and not overpowered with cheese or batter. The cheese enchilada was good - my least favorite of the 3 but still good! Next time I will try it with the cheese on top as well. Service was excellent and our food came out quickly. Our server was attentive and kept us supplied with water, chips, and salsa. Can't wait to go back! And we are back again June 2016 with a large group - we were seated and served quickly.
