We tried the fried chicken, home fries, green beans and meatloaf, cabbage, fried okra. We also got peach cobbler for dessert. My husband and I have been meaning to visit MEs Place for quite some time. We've been hearing a lot of good things about this restaurant, so we were very excited about finally getting to try it out this past weekend. First off, the location isn't the most ideal for a small restaurant - unless you advertise well, chances are people are going to forget where you are. This is one of the main reasons it took so long for us to get around to eating here. However, as unassuming as the outside building is, the inside is neat and clean, not too spacious but big enough to cater their customers. We visited during lunch, which was an 11am-2pm time range. They do open back up from 5pm-8pm for dinner. I am only assuming they have the same menu all day, which is basically one daily special, fried chicken, and maybe the possibility of leftovers from the night before. A bit of a bummer on that front because it was not meatloaf day when we went (it was catfish). Fried chicken I suppose is their specialty, and if that's your thing, then you can go whenever the mood strikes you as it's available everyday. I would check their Facebook page or call first to verify what's on the menu that day before you go. We chose to get the fried chicken, which comes with 2 sides. There were plenty to choose from here - like okra, green beans, mac n cheese, brown beans, collard greens, potato salad, sweet potatoes, etc. We opted for the okra, potato salad, green beans and mac n cheese. And while they were decent in taste, there wasn't anything special about what we chose. The mac n cheese was a dry version (not creamy), the green beans had ham in them and had good flavor, potato salad was a mustard-style version (good but basic), and the okra was just a frozen fried product. Edible, average. Perhaps if we would've gotten the more popular sides (brown beans and collard greens apparently), we would have been wowed. Having said all that, the CHICKEN. I am not a fried chicken lover. I do not like to eat with my fingers or gnaw around bones. But even I could tell this was exceptionally good. There was a tart twang (vinegar? buttermilk?) in the chicken and it really set itself apart from others I have tasted. My husband, whose favorite food just happens to be fried chicken, said it was very very good and worth the visit. In fact, he wasn't too keen on eating here in the beginning but after his first few bites he told me he was glad we came. And also that he knew we'd be back again soon. Closed on Sunday and Monday, pork chops available on Friday, catfish on Saturday and chicken and waffles on Tuesday - that's all I remember. I will definitely be checking for meatloaf night, and then make a plan to stop back by. read more

Came in on Friday about 12:45 or so. Prime lunchtime?? For a small menu they were out of most meat items. I was short on the fried catfish. Price was adjusted. The other people in my party got friend chicken. They asked for all white meat. There was only wings. So two wings plus two sides and small piece of cold cornbread. Chicken was greasy. They only had 1 of the 3 desserts left. No sodas, just tea and coffee. The catfish, Mac n cheese and brown beans were very good. Probably will not return. I did appreciate the gentleman that waited on us. We came because we saw reviews online. A couple that came in when we were almost done left after hearing what they were out of. A few years ago, summer of 2016, my parents and I found this place on the way to the Joplin airport. I was heading back to the SF Bay Area. The menu is not what I'd call varied or large but what they do have is what they are good at, southern soul food. Me's place is very intimate with handful of tables but it's clean, airy and inviting. We had the chicken and dumplings, fried chicken and greens. We of course split it all so we could enjoy it all. Me served us. She was gracious and the nicest ever. My parents returned around a year later and Me remembered them and provided the same impeccable food and service. Tomorrow we are heading back to the airport and the Bay Area we will be stopping again to feast on Me's cooking. I am looking forward to an enjoyable, final SW MO meal until the next visit. I was in the area for work and decided I needed some comfort food so I stopped in. The ambiance had all of the makings of a good southern soul food restaurant- hand written black board menu, Southern Gospel on the radio and a few R&B legends pics on the wall. The host was really sweet as well. I kind of had an Idea the food wouldn't be awesome when I tried their sweet tea. It was too strongly brewed and tasted like teabags. Not southern sweet tea. I ordered the fried chicken lunch and chose macNcheese and sweet potatoes. The mac was veryy tasty. Not southern style baked, but tasty nonetheless. The sweet potatoes were COLD. Not only were they cold, they were flavorless. I was expecting delicious sweet yams. NOPE! These were bland. No butter, sugar or anything. Just boiled mashed sweet potatoes. Needless to say after 1 1/2 scoops I left them for the trash. The chicken was ok. Just extremely greasy. Monique special or seasoned skin. Just dipped in flour and dropped in grease. There were numerous visible feathers still on my wing which is a turnoff. Feathery wings give me the indication that my meat isn't properly cleaned. Cornbread was small and dry. Their patrons seemed to enjoy their meal. I'm from the south and live in Georgia this food wasn't even close. Would I return? Eh. Probably not. They weren't horrible, accepted Amex and were polite. But when I choose to break my diet I like the meal to actually be worth it. This place sadly was not. read more

Well let me start by saying we found this on Yelp and thought we'd give it a try. Here's how it went: 1 Star for cute clean interior 1 Star for friendly people and good service 1 Star for good hot catfish No Star because the sides were lukewarm at best and lacked seasonings No Star for cold cornbread and hard cold butter that you couldn't spread. Can't recommend this place and don't see us going back. It was 12:37p on a Friday which should have the staff hopping and ready for lunch rush but instead the table of four that came in after we did were told the daily specials of catfish or fried chicken were gone along with no peach cobbler. I'd say they weren't prepped very well Or we're just wanting to push the pork chops the other offering of the day. Sorely disappointing all the way around. read more

Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. The place was cute but kinda tight seating. The food however was a different story. The specials for the day were smothered pork chops and fried catfish. You were also able to get fried chicken if you weren't interested in the specials. My daughter and I got fried chicken. Asked for all white meat but was told they were all out. We got 2 very small wings. Hardly any meat on them at all and very greasy. The sides were ok but they were lukewarm and small. The cornbread was very dry and cold. With the butter being cold you could not spread it on the cornbread. No sodas were available just water, coffee, or tea. There were at least 3 or 4 desserts listed on the menu but when we asked only 1 was available. We got there around 12:30 or so. You would think they would have enough of the food they are offering that day to provide for potential customers. Only 1 of us was able to get the fried catfish because that was all that was left. They did discount some off of the catfish because the portions were so small. We all left still hungry and wished we had gone somewhere else. We picked this place based on decent reviews. Had ordered there chicken dinner x 2 got 4 wings. Very Disappointing. Would have thought one of them would be a leg or a thigh but nope 4 wings. Mac and cheese normally has cheese but not this time around. Potatoes were good but no gravy. Green beans and collard greens fantastic. Now the chicken although was wings x 4 was very juicy and flavorful. For dessert we had the Mississippi mud pie cheesecake, awesome. read more

This place is such a gem! Incredibly friendly owners/staff that treat you just like family and food that comforts the soul. It doesn't look like much from the outside but dont let that fool you. Inside it's clean, quaint and nicely decorated. They have different main entree options each day of the week, plus fried chicken everyday. All entrees come with 3 sides and cornbread. So far I've had the fried chicken, baked chicken and chicken and dumplings and all have been amazing! The chicken and dumplings would have to be my favorite so far though. Comfort food at its finest, folks!! As far as sides go they have a really big selection to choose from, including some not so common options like collard greens, steamed cabbage, brown beans, etc. I highly recommend the mac n cheese and mashed potatoes myself, but everyone I was with had different sides and everyone loved them. My boyfriends favorite thing there is actually the brown beans, which is one of their side. Overall I am totally impressed with Me's. I just went there for the first time about a month and a half ago and have been back 3 times since! If you're looking for home cooked goodness like your grandma used to make, this is the place!! Went here last night after work because my crew was begging for a nice home cooked meal. We were not disappointed. Service was a bit slow, but that is because they were making everything fresh in the back. We all got fried chicken and assorted vegetables with cornbread and sweet tea. Their menu changes every night, but you can get fried chicken every night. You also get 3 vegetables and cornbread with your meal. My chicken was nice and crispy on the outside and good and juicy on the inside. I got mashed potatoes and gravy (the gravy looked/tasted like it was from scratch and was delicious), fried okra, and some really good mac and cheese. Wait staff was excellent and friendly and afterwards I thanked him and asked what other nights were the best to come back. He said smothered porkchop or fried catfish are their most popular nights. Nasty and not worth the price. You have the option of selecting from the special of the day or the chicken wings. I chose the chicken wings and only received two small pieces for $12.99...ridiculous. They provide you with three sides, I chose mashed potatoes, collard greens, and mac n' cheese. The potatoes had clumps and was watered down. The mac n' cheese was not fresh or undercooked. If you are looking for good soul food, try Sweetie Pies in Saint Louis. This place doesn't have good food and it's not worth the price. I will have to admit that the ambiance is nice read more

The meatloaf was excellent with just a little kick. Those greens were delicious and the Mac and cheese complimented it all. Amazing soul food! I stopped by with a friend in the middle of a road trip after reading other reviews. It was a little out of our way, but 100% worth it. We both got catfish and I chose mac and cheese and green beans with cornbread on the side. The catfish was fried without being oily, and they had a delicious hot sauce to go with it. Not as vinegary as others, which I loved. The mac and cheese had a nice texture and just a little bit of kick. And of course you can't go wrong with green beans. Little place that is surprisingly spacious and very welcoming. They don't have much staff, but the staff they DO have is amazingly friendly and accommodating. And the food.....I mean, the food is AMAZING. Highly recommend this place. Plus, I just learned they have something called the "Will-I-ham" sandwich. So it's a win win, folks. read more

We tried Me's Place after reading the great review in the Globe. It exceeded expectations! Warm, lovely, homey decor, the best wait-staff anywhere, super service and the food is to die for! The brown beans and ham, the heavenly cornbread, REAL collard greens prepared the RIGHT way, and the best chicken and dumplings! We had a family birthday party there recently and they served us 'family style'. More food than we could eat and the prices were very low for everything we got! The friendliest, funniest, most accommodating staff ever, and you could tell that the other patrons were also enjoying the food and the experience tremendously!
