Saw this place from the highway and thought it would be a good place to drive through and hit the road again. We ordered the cowboy burgers and there was a 7 minute wait for those. Visited here from Los Angeles last week while in the area seeing my family. This place didn't disappoint! My husband was born and raised in SoCal, so while in the Midwest, I wanted him to experience a "real" BBQ place. We did a hole in the wall in Tulsa first and then this place a few days later. I'd say he enjoyed this place the most because it's actually nice inside and not all grimy like a lot of BBQ places can be. Between my parents and us, our table had 2 half orders of ribs and 2 orders of brisket along with a variety of sides including baked beans, coleslaw, mashed potatoes and country gravy, and onion rings. We loved how we were asked if we wanted our brisket shredded or sliced and if we chose the latter (we did), we were then asked if we wanted fat on the meat or not. My step-mom and I both chose the no fat option and our meat came out just like that! I tried all the sauces at the table with my brisket and they were all delish. My fav was probably the sweet. I wanted the spicy to actually be spicy, but it wasn't at all. I didn't try my husband's ribs because they're too messy for me, but he loved them! The country gravy with my husband's potatoes could have had more flavor. It tasted like it had hardly any salt or seasoning in it at all. My green beans were the same, although they did have small pieces of meat in them, so that was nice. My step-mom's onion rings reminded me of the kind I used to get at the fair as a kid, so I really enjoyed those. To start I love Big Ben's BBQ. I've been going to his establishments since he was in Pittsburg Ks. However, I went there on May 20th, we ordered our usual 3 meat nacho. started to eat the nachos only to find a plastic wrapper of some kind buried inside the nacho. i was not pleased to say the least. Ate here 3 years ago. Still disappointing. Not like any BBQ I've ever had. Chopped brisket sandwich tasted like roast beef. Had to gussie it up with sauce. $0.20 for water from a machine. Lol. Big fries were good. Not a fan of their BBQ, but for the cost and size of their large chopped brisket sandwich with large fried potatoes it beats McDonald's hands down. Stopped here on our way back to Texas. Since we have amazing BBQ in Texas we feel it our duty to compare it to BBQ everywhere else! Glad we stopped. It was good. Our favorite was the huge BBQ meatballs. The chopped brisket was good too. Only meat we weren't impressed with was the hot sausage. It was ok but tasted like a regular hot dog. I ordered the nachos with the chips on the side. Trying to cut down my carbs. They came out as ordered with pulled pork. Only complaint is they used canned nacho cheese sauce. Moved across town closer to Carthage so wanted to explore some of the restaurants nearby. I'm not a HUGE bbq lover mine my husband, but this place is truly great. We ate with our eyes first and ended up with wayyyy too much food, but man oh man it was all so good. We got the loaded fries topped with pulled pork; smoked chicken sandwich with baked beans; burnt ends sandwich with coleslaw - and EVERYTHING was delicious! Excellent flavor on the sauce, good smokiness on the chicken, the loaded fries were addicting and indulgent (and definitely shareable). Burnt ends weren't necessarily traditional (not burnt enough) but they were still good. Baked beans and coleslaw were great. Overall very happy to discover this place in our new neighborhood. With only one complaint: No solid 1 3/4 thick steaks!! This gets 5 only because of the true to smoke true to beef treatment. I'd take off half but the fact it's only: salt, garlic, pepper too taste regardless of a 1/2 scale wellness misstep, grants the extra 3/4 's. Decided to try a different Bbq joint so in the car we got and off to Carthage we went. Place is uniquely decorated for western theme with lots of stuffed critters on the walls. You walk up to the counter place your order then find a seat. I got brisket sandwich with sidewinder fries, youngest got chicken nachos and the wife got pulled chicken sandwich with mac n cheese. Service was quick and the place was clean. Food was hot and there was just enough food to fill my hunger except for the nachos and there was a lot of meat and cheese. The lean brisket was well seasoned and smoked with a nice outer ring. I added a nice portion of their mild sauce that had a slight hint of smoke flavoring. The sidewinder fries was huge potato wedges cut in a spiral then deep fried creating a nice thin crispy outer layer. The wife said the chicken wasn't bad but a little dry. The mac n cheese is just your typical boxed mac n cheese and not very cheesy. The chicken nachos had so much cheese and sour cream you had to fish for the chips and chicken but once you make it through the cheese there was a generous portion of chicken. We got a Cowboy burger w/side salad, a Burnt ends sandwich w/side of beans and since it was our first time here, I ordered three ribs. Got the spicy and sweet BBQ sauce in packets to go as well. At first I was disappointed with the look and appearance of the ribs. They looked pretty small and plain to me. No garnish at all which would have helped with the appearance. They tasted great however so looks can be deceiving. I didn't like the sweet but the spicy sauce was great. I had one bite of the Cowboy burger and thought it was excellent. My sandwich was tasty but i couldn't tell if it was beef or pork burnt ends. The baked beans were omk but a little too sweet. There is a place to sit a look but you find yourself feeling a tad rushed because people start pilling up behind you at the door to order. Being from Texas I have high expectations for BBQ. In Texas the the things that carry the most weight are football, BBQ and religion. Which is in top depends on the day of the week. I had the 3 ribs and 2 sides combo and the small sliced moist brisket sandwich with 1 side. Yes I'm about to bust my belt, split my pants and be a candidate for Jenny Craig. I DONT care, this was some damn good food. The ribs and brisket weren't quite as good as home but what made up for it are the sides. Don't come here without ordering the cheesey mashed potatoes or the baked beans. The Cole slaw was about average but the other 2 are worth the trip. The ribs are good don't get me wrong and the brisket isn't bad. I also liked that they have different types of BBQ sauce for each person's tastes. Then there's me who combined the hot and sweet to really kick up the flavor in the ribs.
