I was feeling like poke and jumped at the woman behind the counter's suggestion for a couple of tacos and a side of macaroni salad. It doesn't look like much, but it was filling. It was also really good. A small note -the restaurant's layout is a little tight and it takes a little bit to bust out a line, but the staff is really nice and happy to help with any questions you have. read more

Really enjoyed this yummy Hawaiian restaurant in Joplin! I tried the spam musubi and the build your own Poke bowl with Kalua pork. The pork was flavorful and not dry at all. The spam musubi was just as good as the spam musubi I usually get in CA! Loved it. The inside of the restaurant is really spacious and clean, and there's a sunroom and patio in the back. The menu is really extensive and I can't wait to come back to try the wine slushes and shaved ice. The worker who helped me was also super nice and the food came out quick. Great place!!! We were in Joplin visiting and always love to find unique dining spots! We entered through the back and found ourselves in a seating area with no place to order and no greeting...so we went back out the back and around the front! There we were greeted by a friendly hello and later learned you can go to the back or patio to sit. We went with the Mahi Mahi Tacos and fried spam for a side and Kahula Pork Wrap with side salad. We were visiting Joplin and we decided to give this place a try. I liked the food, and the staff member was very nice and helpful. However, the dining experience was not good. First: a cockroach literally walked across our table. The table had been cleaned and nothing seemed really dirty. It can happen but obviously didn't make us feel great about the place. But what really bugged me (ha!) was that the entrées and apps are served in styrofoam carry-out containers. This is for dine-in! I'm sorry, Hungry Monkey, but if I pay $18 for a meal I don't want to awkwardly eat it out of a styrofoam container! It's hard to eat, squeaky, wasteful, and presentation is atrocious. It's stupid. If I got this as takeout and brought it home, I would put it on a plate. That's what I normally would do, because I don't like to eat things out of a carryout container if I have a choice. Not sure why a choice has been made here to prepare good food, and then treat it like it doesn't even deserve a plate. It definitely made the food seem not special at all. Definitely can't see myself coming back here next time I'm in town. read more

The Poke bowl was on point! Ordering online was easy. No wait and service was great!

Online ordering didn't allow me to make certain modifications, so I called 4 times to try and make a pickup order and no one answered. I ended up driving downtown to go in and make a to go order. I waited almost an hour for my food and there were 4 people working behind the counter. I brought the food back to my family and my girlfriend and her mom each had 3 main ingredients missing from their poke bowls. They also said the portions were significantly smaller than the last time they ordered there. I will not be going back. read more

The kinda crazy good food that the Hungry Monkey dishes up is something you need to taste for yourself. We started with Spam Musabi. Balanced, sweet, and savory - this kicked off our dinner. I ordered the Silly Monkey poke with Tuna and Shrimp, and my husband ordered the Mix Plate with ribs and fish. Our side of Lomi was fresh and bright alongside the sauces and the perfect rice was a warm embrace. Caden, the owner's son, was a lovely chat telling us about their start, his father's amazing sauce-making and insatiable desire to create another fun concept around crepes. Went here with my bestie for my birthday. I had the Mahi Mahi wrap he had Mahi Mahi tacos both were exceptional. His side was the Salmon salad it's sushi style and was amazing. My side was the macaroni salad it was ordinary but very good. We both had virgin drinks they were great. The service was very friendly and helpful. The inside is very warm and inviting with a relaxed island vibe. It is very clean and open you can see where they prepare your food. I will definitely return. Poke Bowl Top is pulled pork, Sriracha mayo, cucumber, avocado, seaweed salad, wontons, jalapeños. All fresh, incredibly crisp vegetables, pulled pork was cooked amazingly and practically fell apart, Sriracha sauce was nicely balanced went incredibly well with everything in the bowl. Bottom is seared salmon, Wasabi mango, edamame, jalapeños, seaweed salad, avocado, cucumber. Salmon was delectable, especially paired with the sauce. Both large bowls, my husband ate all of his, but it was a lot for me to eat. Not pictured: Spam Masubi, meant to take a picture but ate before it was even a thought. So delicious. We have tried several times to come here but it was always after they closed. Decided tonight we would get there right at 5. I got the mahi mahi wrap with a side of Mac salad. My wife got pulled pork hoagie with a side of Mac salad. The service at the counter was top notch, and really, the staff is what is earning this 5 star. The food was good, but the service was top-notch. The ladies at the counter had several suggestions for trying and were patient while we tried deciding what to get. When it was ready, they brought it to our table and stopped by a couple of times to make sure we didn't need anything else. The place had 3 or four other couples, and everyone got the same treatment. The mahi wrap was good but could have used more of the pineapple cabbage. It would have given a little more juice to the mahi. The mahi was a little on the dry side. The pulled pork hoagie was excellent. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the bbq sauce had a nice sweetness but not overly sweetness to it. The mac salad was good. The place was clean and roomy. Very chill atmosphere where you can watch them put together your food, and chat with the super nice chefs and servers. The food is super delicious; we've tried the pork, chicken and spare ribs. The Kalua pork tacos are my favorite and you can never go wrong with the mac salad. We visit here often. read more

Hungry Monkey is an Hawaiian themed restaurant. The decor reminds you of being on the beach in Hawaii. They weren't real busy when we went in but they started filing in pretty quickly later. The girl behind the counter is very friendly, patient, and quite knowledgeable about her products, as evidenced by the 2 guys in front of us who asked a million questions. As for the food, it was very good. I had, and don't tell me I'm gross, a Spam hoagie that was great. It had grilled Spam, cheese, fried eggs, onions, and some kind of sauce. Try it, you'll like it. Deb had a PokeBowl with pork, rice, cucumbers, a kind of teriyaki sauce and other goodies. She said it was really good too. I would say that unless you're a big eater, the small would be plenty. This place has been opened for almost a year and we just keep missing an opportunity to try it out. We drove by last night and I told my husband "we're having that for dinner tomorrow!" It's been a long day so we decided to grab a few things to try things out and go home and eat dinner! We walked in and it was a very relaxing little place. There was a handful of people in front of us but the line moved quickly. Our order was taken with a smile and a couple suggestions were given and taken. They told us it would be about ten minutes so we went on a short walk in the downtown area and came back. A few minutes later everything was ready! Their kitchen area is open so you can watch them cook and everyone behind the counter works so well together. We ordered the Sunny Monkey poke bowl with salmon, ahi tuna taco plate with a side of grilled spam, and the surf & turf entree which came with jasmine rice, lomi salmon, and macaroni salad. We drove home excited with the way the food smelled! So good. We got home and snapped photos quickly so we could dig in! Ahi Tuna Taco plate was hands down our favorite. The tacos were heavenly and had a nice combination of the flavors and textures and it was just chefs kiss. Our favorite. AND THAT GRILLED SPAM. I did not really think I cared for spam but this side may have changed my mind as far as that goes. This will probably be my go to order when eating here again. Our next favorite was the sunny monkey poke bowl. The salmon was fresh. Lots of yummy goodies in the bowl it was like the more we dug into the bowl the more stuff we kept finding. The seaweed salad was one of our favorite seaweed salads we've had and complimented the bowl nicely. Would definitely snag this one up again! The last entree was the surf and turf and it wasn't bad but it didn't overly wow us like we were hoping. The shrimp we think would've been better hot and fresh so we don't judge too much on that. The ribs were a little on the fatty side and kind of tough to chew through. We did enjoy that it allowed us to try multiple sides at once. Normally we aren't macaroni salad people but we wanted to try it for the experience. It was pretty good, my husband enjoyed it more than I did so he finished it off. The lomi salmon was very tasty and I loved the flavors of those tomatoes and the onions all pulled together. I would eat just a bowl of that by itself! We did very much enjoy our overall experience and are so glad we finally remembered to stop in and try this little place. We will definitely be back and hope to see them around the area for a long time to come. Can't wait for the next visit, we will definitely be trying some more of their dishes. read more

For this local girl the Hungry Monkey was a great find. I have missed the awesome plate lunches that we can get from food trucks in Hawaii. This restaurant is clean and tastefully decorated. The staff there were so helpful and went out of their way to make our first time there perfect. I have missed being able to get fresh ahi poke, I asked if I could have just a scoop of poke not a poke bowl. They were kind enough to accommodate my request. I highly recommend the Mixed plate. The Kabli ribs were the thickest, most tender, delicious ribs I have had since I have left the islands. The shoyu chicken was cooked perfectly, falling off the bone. The mahi mahi was absolutely delicious the creamy sauce (I think I caught a hint of wasabi) even had Mac nuts in it. We are so lucky to have a local style restaurant in Joplin..It was definitely worth the drive from Pittsburg, we will be back. read more
