Gotta say I was a little disappointed. Popped in mid week before Christmas, nice and quiet. Was out with my daughter and met two friends for lunch. My kid got her pancakes, my friends (who ordered after me) got their omelettes and I had to politely ask where my omelette was... forgotten entirely. When it came it seemed rushed, no toast, and missing ingredients. Did not send back as it was supposed to be a quick bite to eat. This is a no-frills, local, breakfast / greasy spoon type diner. The place is "classic" in appearance, and seems to be one of those places that the locals go to for generations. The service was fine, but because the regulars generally know exactly what they want, we felt a tad rushed ordering. The food is ok/good, but nothing amazing or earth shattering. The portions are ok, but the prices are quite high for what you get on the plate. This seems to be the new norm lately, where menu prices are high, but the perceived value, or that "bang for the buck", does not measure up. Here is an example: we ordered their signature "Cherry Pit French Toast" to split. The gentleman did not ask if we wanted a full order of a half order (this is that rushed feeling we got), and we just received the half order. No problem. But, the half order is literally one thin slice of bread, cut diagonally, lightly dipped into the "French Toast" liquid and served on a small plate. For $5! It's a single slice of bread! Come one. I am all in for paying extra because someone is making it, etc. but there has to be a limit!? How much is the up-charge here? 200%? 500%? It is ONE thin slice of dipped bread! Anyway... nothing bad about the food or service in this place, but I would caution about the lack of value if you decide to visit. read more

My colleagues and I came here for an end-of-the-year brunch. At 10:30 in the morning, the back room is filled and the luncheonette, counter with half-filled. We elected to take the table in the front window so we can have a little more space to stretch and a little less noise for our conversation. The Cherry pit is clean. The decor is a mix of Art Deco and, I think, 1960s through 1980s. It's kind of a weird mix but it works. Most things are red and white and somewhat bright. The only thing we noticed, and had a pleasant smile about, was the periodic smell of burnt food or something different cooking on the flat grill. The ambiance very pleasant. The music today was, some days after Christmas, still Christmas music. Oh brother. Thank goodness it was not very loud. :-). We didn't mind the music because the humdrum of customers Pleasant, and so were the employees. Everyone was cheerful and enjoying the Cherry pit. Our server right away offered us water and coffee. The coffee tasted good although it was not piping hot. The water is fresh and clean with no weird kitchen or chlorine flavor. The menu is a mix of American breakfast items with some Mexican influenced items. It's kind of cute and Charming. One of us ordered some sort of eggs over easy on top of bacon and I think English muffins. He seemed very happy and it looked very filling. One of our other colleagues ordered a Mexican Skillet, which is basically scrambled eggs with chorizo, green pepper, onion, tomato, plenty of shredded cheese on top of potatoes. I ordered the same thing, but just on top of a tortilla with no potatoes. Mine came with a side of Spanish style rice which was good albeit at a teeny bit salty. While the Mexican omelette was not incredibly flavorful, it also is not greasy. I was happy with it. It was absolutely filling. For approximately $10.25 per entree, all three of us were happy. It was not cheap, nor was it expensive. Especially in Deerfield. Service attention was good except for the bus boy who came by to often to try and clear our plates despite plenty of empty space for new customers to sit. :-) Parking is behind the building in the municipal lot. There's plenty of it. Go with an expectation of decent food, decent customer service and decent prices oh, and you won't be disappointed. read more

This was a tough one to review. Based on how my order was made originally, I would have given it two stars. But when I sent it back, he came out and discussed it with me, remade it, and it came out somewhere between three and four stars. I ordered one of their breakfast sandwiches, that was described as an open-faced ham, scrambled egg, and cheese and sourdough. What I got was two large slices of untoasted sourdough, some eggs that were not at all well scrambled (blech), a piece of ham that was about 25% less than the size of one of the two pieces of sourdough bread, and a very minimal amount of cheese on top of the eggs that looked like it had been cooked to dry. In other words, it was hardly visible at all. When it was remade, the bread had been grilled, there were now two slices of ham, which were decent-sized but still not as large as the pieces of bread they were on, eggs that were better scrambled, and a bit more cheese, but still not what I would consider either adequate or normal. Because of the lack of cheese, it was still fairly dry to eat, but at least it was more palatable than it looked originally. As I told the cook at the time, I was happy to pay for more ingredients. To me, it's always better to charge a little more than to serve something that is clearly not what it should be. My husband had one of their skillets, and said it was fine. Nothing special, just fine. He did say the strawberry lemonade was delicious. I had iced coffee, which was just that, a glass of coffee over ice, but it was fine. I asked if they had any syrups, like maybe vanilla, but they didn't. So I just added some cream, and drank it that way. The best thing I can say about the Cherry Pit is that it was a classic 50s diner, which was cute and fun to see when we walked in. But if I was going for the food, I would pick someplace else next time. read more

I really wanted to like this place especially after reading all the great reviews. But there were a couple problems that resulted in 3 stars. The Cherry Pit Cafe is in the heart of downtown Deerfield. They are a mom and pop shop that has a nice diner decor inside. Plenty of space to spread out and eat socially distanced. All the wait staff were wearing masks but I can't remember if the cook was. Pick up took a little longer than I expected. Our food was ready on the table but checking out was long. I ordered a large orange juice for $3.75 but was given a cup that looked like 8oz. I asked if it was a large and the girl who poured it walked back to the cooler like there was a larger cup option. The man who took our payment said that 8oz looking cup was a large. I opened the cup and it wasn't even filled to the line so I asked if they could top it off. He came back with like a 16oz looking cup and poured my orange juice in there. So... my question is which one is the large OJ? It's not freshly squeezed and just tastes like minutemaid. I ordered the enchilada skillet and my husband got the Big B. I expected a real enchilada with the corn flour but it was a quesadilla with red sauce on it. That's not the same thing as an enchilada. Very misleading. The Big B was ok but his potatoes were cold and hard and burnt, not like the ones that came in my order. My potatoes were made perfectly soft and buttery so again it seems to be lacking consistency. Lastly I ordered a half order of triple berry French toast. It was really good and the fruit were fresh. BUT where was the whipped cream? The menu said it comes with whipped cream and mine didn't have any..... so back to my original complaint, consistency. Overall I thought it was overpriced for Mexican fusion brunch food. My husband didn't like the attitude we received while picking up especially because the whole orange juice situation. This one of those places I not only plan on going to again, but plan on telling everyone about. All we got was the Tex Mex burger and fries (pictured), but it was delicious, substantial, and the fries were some of the best I've had in the last five years. I was here a few weeks ago for a brunch. Had their skillet which.... wasn't technically a skillet..... it came out in a plastic skillet-looking plate which made the food go cold quickly, and probably due to this, their food didn't taste that good. The other places serve their skillet meals in a real iron made skillets that keep the food warm for a period of time. The service was great, though. I'll probably try some other menu next time I visit, hopefully I'll change my mind :) read more

I've visited several times of the last few years, and the place remains consistently excellent. Portions are generous, food is high quality. Very few mistakes, ever, and the service is so brisk, it's a surprise, as lots of restaurants that focus on breakfast/lunch are so tuned to high speed, it just shows how the staff are trained and have great attitudes. I recently came with a family group of 8. We were able to make a reservation and were seated immediately. Cherry Pit Cafe is my kind of brunch place...old school and simple with welcoming and friendly service, and most importantly.. they make delicious food. This place looks a little run-down from the outside but it is well kept and clean inside. My kids and I chose to sit in the dining area, past the open kitchen counter seats on a Monday (11:30am school holiday). Here are a few things that we've tried today: CRUNCHY FRENCH TOAST- perfectly crunchy on the outside and just the right amount of softness on the bread under the Honey Nut & Oats Cereal coating. CHORIZO SKILLET- this dish is spicy and delicious! Every bite is flavorful and you can make this into a burrito as it is served on a tortilla although my son chose to just eat the mixture of chorizo, potatoes, eggs and cheese. Yum! CHERRY PIT SKILLET- my daughter and I loved the different take on this. The sausage links and oh so deliciously sinful bacon strips were served in whole pieces under the blanket of eggs, potatoes and cheese. CHICKEN GYRO - I was pleasantly surprised at how the meat pieces were flavorful and tender because I've only tried lamb gyro from other places. The french fries on the side were magnificent too. TUNA MELT - being the nosy girl that I am, I had to order this because the lady at the table next to us was having this and it looked so good. I am glad that I did order this sandwich because it was delicious. It also came with the irresistable fries. Overall, all the dishes that I have tried here were all worth coming back for. The place is clean and the service was outstanding from beginning to end. My kids completely agreed with me on how I would totally come back to this little Deerfield gem. Stopped by after church for some brunch with the family and what a great decision that was. This place is amazing! Everything we had was so good. It's decorated very old school complete with vinyl tablecloths and a checkered floor. They have a diner area where you can eat in front of the grill or towards the back a more traditional dining area with tables and chairs. Food-wise we only tried their breakfast items, but I thoroughly enjoyed each dish as well all ended up sharing a little bit of each. We tried the Cherry Pit Skillet (eggs, bacon, sausage, turkey sausage, and cheese), Greek Skillet (scrambled eggs, chicken gyros, spinach, tomato, onions, feta, and tzatziki sauce), Enchilada skillet (Cheese enchiladas with eggs), and the Chorizo skillet (scrambled eggs, jalapeno, onions, cheese, tomato, onions, chorizo, and salsa). Food came out pretty quickly and everyone left full and satisfied. Service was quick and friendly and they were very accommodating. "It's a Brand New Day!" That is the slogan painted on the back wall of this little diner located in downtown Deerfield. As you enter from Waukegan Road your first impression is a good one. This has the feel of a small-town, mom and pop diner. The front half of the restaurant is a counter with seating for approximately 15. If you walk past the counter towards the back you'll see it opens open to a larger sit-down area. I've eaten here a few times and the food has never disappointed. When Kevin's Place closed a few years back, I was worried about not being able to get the same type of food in Deerfield anymore. Fortunately, Cherry Pit Cafe has filled in perfectly, with the same huge portions and better-than-average diner food in it's place. Cherry pit is interesting, in which it's a little pricey if you compare it to typical diner food but once you look at the menu and taste the flavors, you realize that it's more like a fast casual restaurant in a diner setting. The service is fast and friendly, and they take birthday songs and celebrations seriously here with dimmed lights and the servers/patrons singing together in perfect harmony. The food is what keeps this restaurant full and busy and these were my thoughts on the items I tried: Crunchy french toast: I was a bit surprised at how well the honey nut and oats cereal matched with the eggy french toast. This created a very nice texture contrast with the fluffy toast and crunchy crust. Pancakes: Fluffy and large, with a fairly standard flavor. Oatmeal pancakes: Wasn't a huge fan of this -- the texture was a bit mushy and the flavor a bit offputting. French toast: Fluffy with a strong egg flavor. Matched well with the syrup but a bit bland on its own. Love that lox omelette: Great mix. The Tomato, feta cheese, and onion really helped to temper the saltiness of the nova lox. The eggs were prepared nice and fluffy, and the ingredients were distributed evenly throughout the omelette. Home-style potatoes: Nice and crispy on the outside, but nice and moist with strong potato flavor on the inside. I was happy this was nice seared fresh potatoes rather than a greasy version of hashed browns. Overall, this helps to fill in the breakfast/brunch space well in downtown Deerfield and is a solid choice for home-style preparation from people who clearly take pride in their restaurant. read more

Probably one of the grossest breakfast I've ever had. I'm a HUGE breakfast person at any time of the day! I typically order the same thing, but try to explore my options; within reason of course. So I ordered my usual, but they served it on a croissant. Great! I opted for the fruit instead of the potatoes. The presentation was OKAY, it did look a bit run down. It probably would have been nicer if they toasted the croissant. Nevertheless, I go to take a bite and blahhh. It's VERY clear that they use frozen spinach and they don't wash the drain the spinach. I hate to be so honest, but it was disgusting. I've passed this location so many times and have always looked forward to stopping by, and was extremely disappointed.
