This is the first time we went to dinner at the Greenwood Grill. We went on a late Saturday afternoon and there were five of us. Since it was early, the tables were just about empty. Most of their tables can sit two to four people, but there is a table in the back that can fit eight or more. We were seated there. As mentioned in earlier reviews, the Greenwood Grill isn't fancy in any way. It is very plain, kind of older looking. But don't let the design of their dining room fool you... We've had brunch at Greenwood Grill many times. At night, their menu changes to Mexican food. We had a variety of things around the table - chips, guacamole, salsa, horchata, green pork pozole, a veggie burrito, refried beans, and (I can't think of the name they call this) a burrito with steak and chorizo. The chips, salsa, and guacamole are all fantastic. I had the Steak and Chorizo burrito. It was large and packed with good things. It came out hot, which is good, and had a wonderful flavor. Came to greenwood grill today for an after party graduation they took all 20 of us and it was the best service for that amount of people that I've ever been involved with those people in that restaurant are professional, and the food is not too shabby either everything was good. The only problem that I had was that they put a lot of lettuce on the burrito other than that everything was wonderful. got a little hole in the wall, literally but it accommodated all of us. It was a little tight, but we all managed if I was ever on their side of town and in Illinois, I would come back to this restaurant by the way, they have Mexican food and American food. This place looks brand new... and yet it is 60 years old? This has a diner mixed with Mexican vibe. You come in and are told to seat yourself. The bring over the menu and ask what you'd like for a drink. This is definitely a casual place. The server is friendly and knowledgeable about the restaurant's history, the menu items, and he genuinely wants to make sure your experience goes well. The flowers on the table are a nice touch. I ordered my regular ham and cheese omelette with hash browns and a side of corned beef hash. The omelette was American grill style (flat eggs browned slightly on the outside and folded over). Not my favorite but liked by many. The ham was fine. There wasn't anything amazing about the omelette. The corned beef hash was fine. Likely out of a can. But then there is the hash browns... yes! Seasoned hash browns! Finally! I would go here just for the hash browns. The price is good. There was a lot of food involved and it was less than I would normally pay going to a chain breakfast. Happy I have an immune system to counter the effects of cook making my salad with his bare hands! I did see him briefly rinse his hands after playing with his phone to cook another meal. On the menu creamy garlic dressing was listed but nope, they don't have it. The ranch was one the worst I have had, totally tasted like out of a can. The server acted as if we were if no consequence, no personality or friendliness at all. When it came time to pay, you run the charge yourself on the counter while twisting your body so not to hit the diners in the booth situated next to counter. So this place is a Mexican restaurant in disguise. A classic greasy spoon with Mexican flare. The pozole is amazing. Chilaquiles are also very good add chicken tingan and they are over the top. Hubby and I celebrated buying a new dryer by getting some lunch here. From the outside it looked very small but it was larger once you get inside. Very neighborhood-y. Asked a staff member how long they have been around and I was told more than 30 years. Looks like they have quite a following with the locals. It was very busy! Hubby got the cheeseburger and I got the turkey club. I thought my turkey club was quite good and I would not hesitate to order it again. Tony said that he wished the cheeseburger came with more toppings like pickle but he said it was definitely a satisfactory cheeseburger. I will rate this place a very solid four. I am all for supporting local businesses that is why I am glad that Greenwood Grill reopened after it closed during the Covid pandemic. I used to have breakfast here and always liked the busy and friendly vibe. They served basic breakfast dishes, nothing special but I always left satisfied. My daughter and I have been wanting to try this place again, having heard that they now also serve Mexican dishes. We came in on a Saturday around 11 am and there were a couple of tables occupied. Once we got inside, there was a blonde woman by the cashier who looked at us, then turned around. Awkward. We waited for a couple of minutes but nobody greeted nor welcomed us so we sat ourselves in a booth. After a couple of minutes, I flagged down a server and asked if we were supposed to get the menus or order at the counter. He came back and gave us the menus and glasses of water. My daughter tried the STEAK BREAKFAST BURRITO which was full of potatoes inside. We opened up the burrito and tried finding actual steak because there were barely any meat. I just had the DEUCES WILD which was good and basic. Our server was pleasant but we had to flag him down for coffee, to go boxes, and the bill. It was one of the longest times I have spent on having breakfast at a diner. The place was practically empty to begin with. The couple of women staff (the blonde woman and I guess the new owner) were walking around, passed our table several times, greeting and chatting with other customers, or just talking to each other. Not even once, were we acknowledged, greeted, nor asked if we needed anything. In other words, we were completely ignored. I guess maybe because we were not considered "regulars" that's why we did not get the same great service as what the other reviewers did. While my daughter and I were eating our dishes, we vowed never to come back again. We were very disappointed, especially since we also wanted to try their tacos for dinner too. That is not going to happen. The two stars were for the guys preparing the dishes. They were working efficiently, as the customers can see them due to the open kitchen lay out. Pretty solid place. They've got your standard diner/grill meals more so breakfast/brunch, you can also get Mexican food such as tacos and burritos. I have been a couple times around 10-11 and thought it was fast, service was good as well. They have seating outside and a nice amount inside for maybe 35 - 40 people. We understand service can be slow on a busy day, but the difference is it felt like we were an inconvenience being there. Nobody seemed to care. Not a single hello or thank you. Zero hospitality. On top of that, food was subpar. I was eager to try the Mexican offerings with new ownership, but options at breakfast are limited. The chilaquiles were literally mush. OK so this is a little hole in the wall spot that used to be owned by somebody else. During Covid it was taken over by a Hispanic woman who added guacamole, tacos etc. to the menu. Even the chips for the guacamole are homemade! They came to the table warm from the oven. This is a beloved neighborhood spot that now I believe is even better than it was before. So happy to have Greenwood grill down the street from us. It's a nice family run business with lots of solid food options. We usually carry out breakfast from here but tried the tacos for dinner tonight. They offer different kinds of meat fillings and toppings. We had a variety of tacos and they did not disappoint! Even our picky kids devoured them. They were hot, fresh and generous with the meat. The home made hot sauces were so so so good too. And to top off the meal, the flan was *chef's kiss*. This is my new favorite diner, everything about the place worked. The egg-white Greek omelette was substantial and had the right mix of cheese and spinach, the two chicken tacos with corn tortillas made Mexican style were outstanding, and the ambiance was exactly how a diner should feel. The pricing is incredibly inexpensive, especially given the portion sizes. This little gem has a nondescript exterior, it's easy not to notice. But don't let the pedestrian exterior fool you, this breakfast/lunch place is worth a visit. read more

My husband and I recently started going to Greenwood Grill since we moved close to it. We absolutely love it and have been going regularly. One of the worst experiences for Mother's Day breakfast. They looked short staffed which I can understand but instead of being apologetic the servers were rude and pushy. We never received menus (had to get it ourselves) or water. No one came to help us so we were about to walk out when Natasha finally came in to help. The food was average and overpriced and took forever to get. We ordered a side of sausage which looked like was forgotten and when I asked Natasha she blamed the kitchen staff. Over the summer of 2023, I was diagnosed with oral pharyngeal cancer. I had the right side of my mouth reconstructed. It was difficult for me to swallow and to open my mouth. Eating took a very long time, sometimes almost 2 hours. I frequented Greenwood Grill and explained my situation. They were incredibly caring and allowed me to substitute side dishes that I could swallow. Their tuna melt is absolutely delicious. They allowed me to substitute French fries with cottage cheese or refried beans. They never once rushed me and they were always incredibly kind. Now that I am able to eat normally, I am a regular patron. It has been my experience that the staff has always been VERY nice, polite, accommodating and always friendly. The food is good especially the skirt steak. Their tacos are delicious and their breakfast burritos are really good. It is a family owned grill and the wait staff has always been welcoming. I understand that sometimes when things get busy service can be a bit slow but for the most part the staff is very efficient. My husband and I love their food and we always enjoy talking with Verenice the owner. I encourage everyone to try them out. I find their Mexican food to be really good. I have never had "mushy" food there. It is a very laid back and casual atmosphere which I happen to like. It is very down to Earth. Thanks to Greenwood Grill for making my life more pleasant.
