Don't let the fact that it is attached to a gas station fool you. This place offers some amazing and delicious Mexican food. They are extremely friendly and welcoming, always willing to help you through their menu. I have had their tacos and burritos, and neither failed to satisfy. They are a quick and easy stop right along Milwaukee. They offer a drive thru and order countertop. They will make everything right before your eyes. It's interesting how they make you feel like you are in an actual restaurant. I highly recommend to anyone looking for a quick bite. They also have one of the best Horchatas I have ever had!

Amazing food and great service! The guacamole was made fresh which is wild given this place runs out of a gas station.

We ordered a side of guac, 3 beer batter fried fish tacos, and birria tacos. I also ordered a drink. We opened the bag and I got a flattop grilled fish as opposed to the beer batter fried fish tacos like I ordered. I didn't want to wait for my food again but it was rather disappointing that we went through the effort of going through the ordering options for it to still not come out right. My husband had the birria tacos and mentioned that that weren't bad, just not one go out of his way for again. I went to try it and it was super dried out even after dipping into the consume which was lacking a bit in flavor. Then for the drink, they forgot to give it to us, and when we came in they gave us a 4 ounce cup for our 3.50 Jamaica aqua Fresca. When we asked the hostess she looked at us like we were speaking a foreign language and offered us an orange jarrito. All in all, we were rather disappointed with this experience but hope that another try down the line will be better.

So, I stopped in during the week, just after lunch time and found this little hole-in-the wall of a restaurant conveniently nestled in a shopping center next to the local Walmart. Even though I walked in and the restaurant was completely empty, the pure vibrancy of the decor and the cheerfulness of the staff encouraged me to stay. Not to mention that the aroma making its way out from the kitchen was absolutely mouth-watering. I took a seat at the bar while I perused the menu and was delighted in the simplicity of it. You know the food is about to be fire when the menu is simple and a restaurant focuses on what it does well. In addition to the excellent service, the food was absolutely phenomenal. I started off with some chips and salsa.... which was delightfully flavorful and perfectly crisp. Then, I had a bowl of the tortilla soup. Each spoonful was like deja vu. Each bite made me feel like I was in my grandmother's kitchen as a little girl all over again. The broth was perfectly seasoned and each bite came with a chunk of chicken and an assortment of veggies... truly perfecto! Once I was done with the appetizers, I made my decision to try two tacos from the menu. The first was a salmon taco--and it didn't TASTE FISHY. It was grilled to perfection and then paired with an unexpected yet delicious topping of crispy potato strings and chipotle aioli. I ate every bite of this. It was the perfect combination of crunch and flavor, I just couldn't get enough. Then I also ordered the carne asada a cabron taco. Simple, yet dynamically flavorful. I was so full at this point but took this one home to eat at a later time. Still as amazing as the day I ordered it i'm sure. While I neglected to have any desserts or margaritas here, I was assured that they are just as remarkable as anything else. I had a wonderful meal, excellent service and I greatly look forward to going back if i'm ever in the area again for work. 10/10 Highly recommend!!

Being from AZ visiting this…read morearea, I did not have very high expectations for tacos because in AZ we have the best Mexican food ever! So well, I found the food bland. Took awhile for someone to come from the back to greet us at the register and get our order. Nothing exciting and the person that cleaned up the table didn't take his gloves off after he cleaned up, then he was in the kitchen doing other stuff wearing same gloves (yes I was watching) bc he was also the person in the cash register that took our order. It was ok only.

It's also fairly easy to park here and service is pretty quick and friendly. The menu is not super adventurous which helps appeal to a wide audience, but at the same time offers 15 protein options, which is more than enough choices to make repeat visits interesting. In addition to being a pleasant spot to hangout with friends, the reasonable pricing here -- particularly with the option to make the meal quite healthy, is something that will draw me back for repeat visits. The portion sizes are pretty good as well and the churros are a great dessert to finish the meal. Overall, a solid option to enjoy Mexican cuisine in a nice setting. The meat could use a little more seasoning, and the salsas could probably be kicked up a notch as well (even the spiciest option was pretty mild for me), but still enjoyable.

5 stars for Monica's Mexican Restaurant in Prospect Heights…read more This restaurant is located at the back of a strip mall off of Milwaukee Avenue. It seems like a hidden gem in my opinion, they have alcohol, a full menu or traditional Mexican cuisine and are very reasonably priced for what you get. There are plenty of tables for dining in. Our food came out very quickly and was pretty good, our waitress was also very friendly. I highly recommend the shrimp Diabla plate - a big portion that comes with tortillas, while spicy, not insanely spicy. Overall, highly recommended.

Hidden Gem for Authentic Mexican Food…read more Monica's is one of those small hole-in-the-wall places you might overlook--but I'm so glad I stopped in for lunch while looking for something new. From the moment I walked in, the hostess and waitresses were absolutely phenomenal--warm, welcoming, and on top of everything. I placed my order and, no exaggeration, my food came out in under five minutes. I ordered two gorditas with picadillo, and they were massive--each one about the size of my hand with fingers spread open. They came with rice and beans on the side, and everything was absolutely delicious. I also got a Coke, and for the whole meal, it was just $18. Really fair pricing for the amount and quality of food. The red salsa is worth mentioning again--so flavorful and with just the right kick. A couple of things to note: * Spanish is the predominant language spoken here. While the staff was very helpful and did their best to accommodate, I overheard a few other tables struggling a bit to place their orders. Not a dealbreaker at all--just something to be aware of. * If you ask for a glass for your drink, double-check that it's clean. They brought me two different cups, and both had noticeable residue inside, so I ended up just using the bottle. Still, none of that takes away from how authentic and delicious the food is. Monica's is a true hidden gem--if you're craving real Mexican food, you need to give this place a try!
