From the unassuming outside one might question the deliciousness of The Original Granny's, but you will be missing a tasty place to enjoy breakfast and lunch! We have friends who frequent The Original Granny's and they say it's a hidden gem. They're right! Walking in around 12:30, we were warmly greeted by the friendly owner and quickly seated. The inside had comfortable booths and tables. It was bright and warm. We can tell that the owner really cares about their restaurant and hospitality. There were a lot of regulars eating there, we can tell by the friendly conversations with the staff and customers. Our server was so friendly (her name escapes me, but I think it starts with a T). She patiently gave me time to look over the menu (there's some really good choices). Hubs decided what he wanted pretty quick. He ordered a rise and shine burger which was one of the daily specials, medium rare. I opted for 1/2 soup and 1/2 corned beef sandwich. We both got the clam chowder (soup of the day). The clam chowder arrived nice hot. His was pretty full of clams while mine wasn't but I'm sure it's just the way the soup gets scooped. It was still good! His burger arrived a perfectly prepared medium rare. The fries are so crispy and delicious! I hate sending food back, but my corned beef was very lean, somewhat dry, and hard to chew. The corned beef was cooked on the griddle which made it dry out. BUT, it was quickly remedied and replaced with my backup choice of a BLT. The BLT was very good! Thick sliced tomato, crispy lettuce, and crispy bacon with just the right amount of toast to the bread! It really was one of the better BLTs I've had (yes, it can be possible to have other places mess it up). Our server was so sweet and apologetic about the corned beef sandwich. We left lunch full and happy! I honestly don't know if they changed me extra for paying by debit. I didn't notice a sign or ask, it wasn't mentioned, and our check was only $37 so if 3% keeps a small family business going and servers employed, I'm not whining. The owner at the register asked how our meal was and thanked us for trying his restaurant (meaning he pays attention to new customers and regulars!). I met a friend for breakfast at The Original Granny's. This will remind you of a dinner from the 1980s, and it appears that it still has the decor from the time period too. I ordered the French toast that was modeled after and tastes like the Samoan Girl Scout cookies. My friend had eggs and sausage. The food was terrific and our sever checked on us often. I have been to Granny's countless times, being a lifelong resident of Wheeling. They have always had exceptional service and great food, and always seem to get a great crowd. I last dined in back in January, and I was pleased that things were how I remembered them. The usual hustle and bustle of the breakfast rush, and patrons busy digging into their meals. I ended up trying the New Oreo S'more Belgium Waffles. The batter is made with oreos, and they came topped with marshmallow sauce, chocolate ganache, oreo crumbles and whipped cream. I absolutely enjoyed every bite. It was't too over sweet or anything thing, and all the flavors came together really well. Everyone else at my table seem satisfied with their food as well. Granny's will continue to be a local and family favorite , hopefully for many more years. I look forward to my next visit and encourage others to check them out as well! read more

I ordered Granny's catering for roughly 20 people for a retirement party and cannot recommend them enough! The chicken souvlaki was perfectly cooked, delivered and more than enough for our group. The sides (e.g., Greek salad, potatoes, etc.) were also incredible. Ordering was effortless, pick-up was quick and organized, and the service was outstanding--special shoutout to Pete for making the entire process smooth and stress-free. I have not been to Granny's in years. Not sure why. But I will definitely be going here more often after today's wonderful experience. Let me start off by saying it's a clean comfortable place . You're immediately greeted upon entry and asked if you would like a booth or a table. Once you're someone brings you water then the wait staff comes and ask if you're ready to order. Today's special was a croissant sandwich with a bowl of soup. I chose tuna salad with the soup of the day which was split pea. My friend asked for tuna salad, but on toast with the creamy broccoli soup. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. My croissant was fresh and the tuna salad was very good. Split pea soup has always been one of my favorites and this did not disappoint. The prices were extremely reasonable. They have a pretty extensive menu. Lots of breakfast items, salads, and more hardy foods if that's what you're looking for in a meal. When we checked out, we were asked if we enjoyed our meal. We also had a few pleasant words with the cashier. I mentioned to other local friends how much I enjoyed it. Each of them, recall eating there in the past and liking it. Feel good family friendly eatery. We have gone there for many years. You are always greeted with a smile and leave with a thank you. The father, sons, & mother that operate this restaurant are always happy. Their food is fantastic, always served at the right temperature, and tasty. The wait staff is always attentive to your table checking on you whether it is to refill your coffee or water or just to make sure that everything is going just right. It is priced well. So I feel really bad leaving a local family business 3 stars, if it was a chain I'd give it even less to be honest. On the positive side the service is very nice, attentive staff, and a friendly atmosphere, the restaurant itself is fairly cozy for a brunch/ diner spot. I was excited to order the Dutch vegetable garden, hoping it would be a replica, if not better than the one at Walker brothers for a lower price point, but unfortunately it just didn't hit the mark. Something about it tasted very funky, it's either the oil they used that wasn't neutral in taste, or they just used bad/ old oil to make it. The aftertaste was just so so bad and I didn't have the heart to complain about it. Then I ordered the crepes, I love a good thin, plain, but buttery crepe. What I got was huge, but was something of a hybrid between a crepe and a pancake, let's call it an enormous pancake. It was so thick, not in a good way and the taste was again, just ok. Kind of disappointing I was hoping this would be my new go to spot since the prices are a lot better than my regular brunch spots but the taste of my "go-to favorite dishes" just felt off. read more

My husband and I try to go here at least once a week. We just love the hospitality and the consistency of this beautifully family owned place. Even during busy times, they're great about getting us in and out. The food is just so consistently cooked well. We just love breakfast food basically lol We both enjoyed the coconut caramel delight French toast. Just enough coconut and drizzled with caramel. The country fried steak was just enjoyable as well. I say this without exaggeration, my boyfriend was passionately upset that they had packaged corn syrup lol I mean honestly, a pancake house without hot syrup is like a Mexican restaurant that doesn't have any hot sauce but they give you Taco Bell sauce instead lol I would expect that in a fast food restaurant but not in a dine in. I gravitate toward flavor and typically enjoy seasoned/spicy food. So, when I ordered the Zesty Feta Chicken Wrap, I was expecting a little zip. I was caught completely off guard by the heat in this wrap. "Zesty" would have been a good description of about 1/4 of the spice in this meal. What I ate tasted more like the lid had fallen off the spice bottle. I'd compare the spiciness to some Indian dishes I've had. As I ate it, my eyes watered and my nose ran. I ended up removing some of the spicy feta from the second half of the wrap, and was really only able to finish it because I had sides of cole slaw and fruit to calm my mouth. Spice level aside, the food was good. It came with a bowl of soup. From a few options, I chose chicken tortilla. It contained a lot of shredded cheese and was not spicy. I would have liked a bit more flavor in the soup and way less in the wrap. After I got home, I looked up the menu to see what had made this meal so incredibly spicy. Answer: Tyrokafteri feta. I wasn't familiar with Tyrokafteri and must have glossed over the word on the menu. For my fellow initiated diners, it's a spread the features hot chili peppers. You've been warned. The place a very busy when I was there, but we were seated immediately and the service was pretty fast, though not particularly attentive. It was awhile before our water was refilled and our server never asked if we enjoyed our food, so I never had a chance to mention the extreme spiciness of the wrap. Great little spot! I have never had service that was as attentive as today. I walked in and they immediately greeted me and sat me down. They had a menu and came over and within a few minutes asked me if I was ready to order. Ordered my food and within a few minutes my food was ready. Which tasted real good by the way. 2 eggs, hash brown and two pancakes for under 8 bucks is amazing. The awesome part was they gave me this small sized glass of water and even though every restaurant I go to, I always finish my water before they refill. These guys I felt were testing me on whether it was possible for me to drink my water fast enough. I pretty much won but they gave me two glasses instead of one kid way through. Specialties here include breakfast scrambles, omelettes, benedicts, French toast, and - oh my - those pancakes. They'll substitute any type of pancakes for any breakfast for a small cost, and at least during October, you should try those pumpkin spice pancakes. They have a strong presence of cloves (good if you like cloves, not if you don't). Coffee comes out quickly and refills come out often, and our group was checked on frequently both by our waitress and other staff to either refill coffee or take away cleared plates. I've driven by many times, I finally decided to give it a try. I placed a phone order, the older gentleman was polite. At pickup the place was packed, parking wasn't too bad considering its in a strip mall. The guy at the register was also polite. The food was disappointing. I ordered the Create Your Own Omelette, I requested spinach, turkey sausage, onions, mushrooms, & feta. The omelette comes with your choice of fruit or potatoes, and pancakes or toast. I opted for the potatoes, and pancakes, and requested sugar-free syrup. When I returned home I discovered the omelette had tomatoes I called the restaurant with 3 concerns: 1. Is the online pricing accurate? What I was charged suggests it's not. 2. The tomatoes 3. Was I given sugar-free syrup? The younger gentleman failed at his attempt to answer my first question stating the pricing should be accurate, but may not be. I was then placed on hold & the older gentleman addressed my other two concerns stating "My chef said he didn't put tomatoes in your omelette" (picture shows that was false) and he assured me it was sugar-free syrup which after the wrong pricing, & wrong ingredient, I wasn't comfortable trusting. In his defense he did offer to have a new order made, but I was finally home & had zero intentions of going back out. To add insult to injury the omelette and potatoes were bland. Instead of adding an ingredient I didn't request I wish the chef had simply added SALT! Based on this experience it's highly unlikely I'd return. read more

In 2018 we decided to try a different diner each weekend for breakfast in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago. The original granny's came highly recommended for their omelets. I eat Keto / Low Carb so omelets are a great option to stick to this lifestyle but I have to admit that I was skeptical how a place might stand out with such a basic dish. Well, let me tell you, once you had an omelet here, each following omelet will not live up to it. They make them in the convection oven and they turn out huge and so so fluffy. I go with egg white only and cheese, bacon and some veggies and feel like what I get could feed at least 2. Really great! The diner itself is true in decor to when it first opened. The family enjoys their pancakes, other egg dishes and lunch options like sandwiches too. Service is always very friendly. Lots of parking as it is next to a grocery store. This place was a favorite of my grandparents. They always wanted to go here. I never much liked the place personally as it's just not my kind of place. It's a typical family restaurant which used to serve all three meals but dropped dinner off the menu years ago. It has since grown on me as an adult since it's a quaint family owned and run restaurant and they have made good strides in adding more interesting foods to the menu over the years. Everything is always cooked well and satisfies the needs of typical and a little more unique breakfast choices. The atmosphere is casual and cozy and great for family gatherings. We took out from there recently and I was pretty shocked at the amount of random sauces and plastic utensils given. It's thoughtful and kind to provide everything you think we might need but it's bad for the environment when a lot of it will go to waste. Please work on simply asking people if they would like any butter, ketchup or utensils or if they don't need it. Overall this place is just not what I would personally use as a go to but it's a quality family restaurant great for basic and not so basic breakfast with very friendly family owners. I'm flabbergasted at the response I received from the server and even more so the owner. We had already planned on going back until I asked a question about our bill. I thought I had ordered a special and questioned the waitress. Her response was she assumes the customer orders the platter unless they say special. Since it was our first visit I mentioned it may be nice to let a customer know. She responded with why would I do that the restaurant looses money. I had apparently missed the instructions that you have to say special when you order from the special menu. So when I went to pay I mentioned to the owner what happened. At that point he would not even look at me. In fact I'm sure it was in error but he short changed me by a few coins. Then he came back got in my face while I was looking for my keys, he talked over me, said he had nice customers and said there is the door. I did not ask to be comped I was only talking. In fact I told him the food and the waitresses service was good. He told me if it was so good he would not be talking to me. Wow just wow. I'm sure he was just having a bad day but in reading the reviews he apparently has fits of anger. I only asked a question and made a suggestion.
