What can improve? Everything. Apparently Grandpa's Place has been around for years. My dad had an office and n Glenview when I was younger and this place was there and he had never heard of it. I guess if you were local or took the Metra, then you knew. I made a reservation as there were twelve of us coming in. We arrive for our monthly Burger Club with high hopes. It's a cute place. They have a nice outdoor deck area and the inside has a nice wooden bar with tables around it with two or three additional rooms of seating, too. We asked for separate checks, and our server told us it was no problem (it was). They have a lot of burgers to choose from so we thought that this would be a great place to go. I'll say this, our server was wonderful. Super nice, really friendly, always refilling drinks. Just a wonderful experience with her. And that's where it ends. My burger came our perfectly prepared (they ask what temperature you want and I wanted medium rare). The patties are insanely thin and toppings, while fresh, are overly abundant. Fresh lettuce, tasty pickles, etc. the burger had no flavor. No salt or pepper to season it or anything. And mine was the best of the group. Others received burgers that were overcooked, had the wrong buns, came with caramelized onions, but were raw -were sent back and came back raw again - and the sides were underwhelming. I don't like ketchup, so I asked for ranch and it was thick and had a funky flavor to it. Then bills came and they were all wrong. She had mixed up every bill. Thankfully most burgers cost the same, but drinks and some side upgrades don't. We will never go back here. I have no idea how they stay in business. read more

Grandpa's is a Glenview institution. It is perfectly located if you are getting off the Amtrak or Metra at the Glenview station, and if you sit on their patio, it's always fun to watch the train go by. The patio is just okay, in my opinion. It's small and nothing is very special about it, but on a nice, sunny day, it's perfect for lunch. I've never been a huge fan of the indoor dining area either, and I usually opt to sit at the bar if I can. The staff is very kind. They have an excellent burger. It's always cooked right and I love the bun. I add avocado to mine. The fries are great too, and always the perfect amount of crispy. I consistently used to order their Turkey Club, but at some point in the past few years, they switched from fresh cut turkey to deli turkey. It's not nearly as good anymore for that reason, and not worth ordering. The only Glenview restaurants I know of that still use fresh turkey in their sandwiches are Hackney's and Meier's Tavern. Also, their Guinness pours can be questionable depending on who's pouring. Nowadays, when I go to Grandpa's, I only ever order the Chicken Kabobs. They are absolutely delicious! If you like medium spice, I advise you to ask for them cajun-style. They are best this way! The kabobs come served over rice with the most juicy oven roasted tomatoes, and this addicting peanut sauce on the side. I pour it over the whole thing. It is a must-try and no doubt the best thing on their menu. Highly recommend Grandpa's food, as most things on the menu are enjoyable. They also have Merkt's Cheese! read more

If you've been reading my Yelp reviews, yes, I've been up to more than just trying all the açaí bowl and bubble tea places lately. LOL. Grandpa's Place is dated, yes, but it's grown on me and has a special place in my heart, as its location right by the Metra station and my workplace make it a fine choice for after work happy hours... of which I've had 6 in the past half year or so. :) That's pretty good pacing, no? Appetizers are half off 3:30-5:30pm on weekdays (and $1 off drinks). My go to drink has been a cosmo, and it's only $8.75 here! Best kept secret in town! When I organize HH here, I try to coordinate reserving the downstairs area, and with enough notice, it's easy enough by emailing the event coordinator Jessie. Also of note are that open comedy mic nights are every Tuesday, and there's live music and band performances scheduled too. A fun atmosphere and home timely feel to be had here. Street parking along the building, or pro tip: there's a small lot on the other side. read more

Went with partner on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at around 2pm. We sat at the bar, expecting to order food and a couple drinks for a late lunch after running errands. One other person was seated at the bar, and a few white-haired Boomers were seated at a high-top. So we weren't the only "old/retired people" in the place. The bartender -- a 20-something female with long, curled medium brown hair, pale skin and blue eyes -- was RUDE and dismissive from the get go. Now, my companison and I are both of Celtic descent, with similar coloring to hers, so her behavior definitely was NOT an ethnic/racial thing whatsoever. She simply had ATTITUDE from the second we sat down, as though we were bothering her to do her JOB! Maybe she was just having a "bad" day, but that doesn't excuse treating customers like crap. Anyone who's worked long enough learns to try to compartmentalize personal from professional so you can make a living. She seemed irritated that we interrupted her video-viewing session with her boyfriend(?) at the end of the bar. We always said "Thank you" when she gave us menus, napkins or our drinks and we even tried to engage her in a bit of "bar banter" -- to no avail. The Guinness pour was fine; the Long Island Iced was too strong (yeah, I know: who complains about too much alcohol in their drinks?) After musing and joking with each other about her behavior, we decided to down our drinks and go elsewhere for our lunch. Not good for the bar/restaurant's reputation! We understand it's hard to get good help these days, especially during less-busy (aka: not profitable) shifts, and for younger people to earn a decent living. So yes, we still tipped her $4 for $20 worth of drinks. But if she doesn't want to be there, she shouldn't. Most likely we won't bother returning and will spend our $100 elsewhere! read more

I've been to Grandpa' Place a few times over the years and returned last week after work with a group of colleagues. Drinks and food appeared in an appropriate amount of time. I'm a beer-guy and was hoping for more options than they offer. Grandpa's is an old time kind of wood floored bar that looks like it's been there for a long long time. I was expecting (and hoping) to see some cheap tall boy cans of beer, like Old Style, PBR, or Hamms for a few bucks. The cheapest they had was a $5 Miller High Life bottle . That was fine but I sure got the impression this bar, being very aged (in a nice way) would have some budget-minded beers. This is a nice local place with lots of charm and character right in downtown Glenview. It struck me as a cheap beer place but it's not really that. Come here a few times now and overall I really like Grandpa's Place. I love the cozy inside and the outdoor patio. The food here is soooooo good. I've never had such perfectly crispy cheese curds as I have here each time. They also have this awesome peanut dressing with their Thai Chicken salad that is delicious. Also have tried fish and chips, Rueben, burger, French onion soup and all were great. My son loves everything on the kids menu too. The only reason why I can't give 5 starts is because the drinks are so expensive. $9 for a Guinness and it's not even an imperial pint. It's just a 16oz pint. I don't get a second drink when there for dinner because of that and would love to make this a weekend hang out spot but that much for a drink I might as well be in the city. Even places in Edison Park don't charge that. Wish they had some better drink specials or not charge so much because I would be there more frequently. I hate to write this review, but, I came on a Friday afternoon for lunch with my husband. I wanted something lighter so I ordered the soup & sandwich combo. The waitress said on Fridays their special is clam chowder so I ordered that along with a half tuna melt sandwich. The clam chowder is cooked in house and unfortunately the potatoes were still raw. The waitress offered me the French onion soup instead and that tasted just okay. The tuna melt wasn't bad but nothing I'd write home about either. I tried my husband's cole slaw but sadly that was missing salt and any flavor. The waitress was super nice but I don't think I'd come back here for the food. read more

Great find! I was looking for a convenient place to meet a friend for lunch who was taking the train in from the city. Since I live about 30 min. north, Glenview seemed like the perfect halfway point. I found Grandpa's Place here on Yelp, and based on all the positive reviews, decided to give it a try. So glad I did! Friendly service, lovely outdoor eating area, and delicious salads!! (I had the chopped salad w/chicken. Very generous portions, unlike some places that toss a few scraps of chicken ... Went to dinner last night. I have been to Grandpas many times and always enjoyed my visit. Normally, I would give this place 4 stars. Yesterday, I had the Thai Chicken salad and found a long hair in my meal. I couldn't eat anymore. I told our waiter and not even an apology or some sort of meal compensation. I would have accepted a free drink. In case you are questioning if it could be my hair, I have extremely short hair. I do hope the cooks are wearing hairnets. This place is a little hidden behind trees at the Glenview Metra station. Thats probably why this was my first time here after driving near it so many times. I knew it was there but just hadn't made the effort. I sat outside for lunch and the setting was very peaceful since it doesn't sit on a busy street. I heard more birds than cars. I saw one Metra and one Amtrak train pass while I was eating my very tasty Cobb salad. I'd rather see a couple commuter trains pass by than a bunch of loud cars and motorcycles any day of the week. The salad had fresh chunks of avocado, crunchy tortilla strips, corn, beans and juicy tomatoes. They were out of the house balsamic so I got the honey mustard which was very good. Certainly not gonna subtract a review star for the dressing since the salad was great and the outdoor, shady quiet patio was a beautiful setting. I'd like to come back for a burger since a huge part of the menu was different types. The young server Sam was a very friendly, nice young man. Really nice place. read more

I met my Yelp friend Joy C at Grandpa's Place in Glenview Friday for drinks and food and to catch up on the happenings of our exciting dynamic lives. Grandpa's Place is a local place right by the Glenview Metra Station & walking distance to the Glenview Library. Grandpas Place serves drinks and bar food, things like burgers, wings...GP has a good vibe and it seems like many of the people are regulars (I know Joy is). While the food was nothing special it was good to see Joy and catch up a little. Joy ordered the pot roast dish w/broccoli and mashed potatoes and gravy. I tried some of her pot roast. It was very tender and tasty. I ordered the Pub Burger medium rare, it wasn't medium rare. It was over cooked. This was 1/4 lb burger w/cheddar cheese, bacon, egg over easy & tomatoes on rye bread. Great example of the local burger and beer joint done really well with friendly, personal service, a predictable but solid menu, good selection of beer and booze, and occasional live music (often local suburban dad bands that pack the place with their friends). NOTE: as is the case with so many suburban places in a post-pandemic world, the kitchen closes at 9 on weekends....which was earlier than we expected when we pulled in at 9:05. To our delight, the server said he'd take our order right away (burgers...what else?!) and got the kitchen to cook up one more round. Nice little outdoor beer garden for the warmer months. Nothing fancy. Nothing high end. Nothing expensive. Just a great neighborhood place to bring the kids or come with friends for a dinner or adult beverage. read more

I have fond childhood memories of this place and have been coming back to eat over the last few years. The food is decent bar food but the service is hit or miss. Just left and had to wait 10 minutes after being seated for anyone to come over to us. Usually I can shrug that off, but we had to wait another 10-15 minutes to get our check when we wanted to leave. We got the check (and the water that was supposed to be brought over 20 minutes earlier to our empty table) and was shocked to see we were charged $12.25 for a SIDE of sweet potato fries. It was a small side plate of about 15-20 fries, not enough to share though it's listed as "shareable". Seems to be out of our price range these days. I asked the server about the price she mentioned that the price is for "a basket" though I was given a plate, I wonder if there are 2 sizes and I was given the wrong one. She offered to get her manager but I guess that's my fault for not looking at the price. It's a shame we won't be going back. read more

Reviewing as a solo traveler - I always seek a place that has a good bar space when I travel alone. On this particular evening I was seeking out a good salad option (and bar) in the Morton Grove area. Grandpa's Place came up and I headed over...it was a Friday night so it was kind of crowded. I was worried I wouldn't find a space at the bar but someone had just left and I grabbed a seat. This restaurant is located right next to the train station so much of the patrons are people getting off of work to grab a drink and some food. It had a really nice local atmosphere and parking was pretty easy despite the busyness. Drinks were pretty damn good (bartender Rob was a really cool dude) and the salad was solid. Although I ate most of it when I got back to my hotel because I was chatting with locals the whole time HAHA. Nice small town bar. I enjoyed it read more

In my 40 years since going to Grandpas, the service and food were not worth paying for. Although it was Sunday in November. Same barflies as were there 30 years ago. Got there when they opened on St Paddys day. The bartender was engaging and made my friend and I feel comfortable. The music was fun and there was someone sporadically playing bagpipes. Lots of beers and whiskeys available. We had a reuben and fries. The reuben was one of the best ive had in the area. The corned beef was almost shredded, which made the sandwich really easy to eat. The bread was buttered and not soggy at all. It was seasoned perfectly as well. I highly recommend it. The crowed seems to be 30-50 year olds, which is perfectly fine. Not sure if it changes as it gets later. Really clean place, great service, good food, good drinks, comfortable "cheers-like" atmosphere. Ill definitely be back. read more

Had lunch here today and loved it. It is just across the parking lot from the Glenview Metra train station. I dined with a friend before getting on the train and heading back downtown. The weather was perfect so we sat on the outdoor patio and ate our meal there. I had the Chopped Salad and my friend had the Santa Fe burger which she said was fantastic. They offer mixed drinks as well as beer and wine. I had a glass of pinot grigio and enjoyed that. The service is good, our server was friendly and the wait for our food was pretty short. The portions are good, you won't go hungry. I will definately be back here because I really enjoyed the food, atmosphere and service. read more

A recent expansion has made this a great place for outdoor dining. There is now plenty of seating indoors as well where it could be nearly impossible to get a table for a burger in the past. Good bar food and some specials. Cold beer and friendly servers. They now host private parties in a new area above the restaurant. The new back bar hosts live music on weekends. I miss the outdoor seating at the old Glenview House but this place is making me get over it. They also have a little 'living room' that's a cool touch with a fireplace and big leather sofa's. The only complaint is the tiny bathrooms. This is quickly becoming my burger/tavern joint due to one of my favorites 'Hackneys' pricing themselves out of my market. Grandpa's checks all the boxes for a great bar/restaurant. 1st they pour a perfect Half and Half, it's a work of art to float Guinness on top. 2nd the outdoor deck is always ready for those unexpected warm days from late fall to early spring. Plus they can open up other outdoor seating areas if they get busy. 3rd Inside they have a classic wooden bar and a cozy fireplace area with comfy couches and board games. 4th Trains trains trains ... Metra, Amtrak, freight ... just sit and enjoy. 5th love the chili, Rueben, fish & chips, daily specials ... reliably tasty food. 6th Staff is super friendly. 7th check the website for live music, especially Irish tunes. 8th during summer, take kids to park on west side of tracks and get a cone. 9th plenty of parking 10th did I mention their great Half and Half? read more

It's a nice space, very attractive interior with a comfy neighborhood style bar, a more spacious dining area and a little cozy game room which is like a den. The interior is lots of pretty wood and in nicer weather there's a great patio. Better service at the bar, table service varies from inattentive to adequate. The kabobs is maybe their best dish, I've had better reubens, I've had much worse. I think the prices are a little high for standard neighborhood bar fare. I good choice to meet friends sort of halfway between Chicago proper and Milwaukee. read more

We attended an event that was being held at Grandpa's Place. It was nice to see that they had an elevator that went up the the upstairs party room. Being inclusive is important and stairs could have been difficult for a lot of the elderly attendees. I also really liked that there were bathrooms on the upper floor. My family had several different sandwich platters, fruit and veggie platters, cheese platters, the works. Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. We sampled enough of their menu to know that it's definitely a place worth checking out on our own time. read more
